David Wolfenden in conversation with David Eastaugh n 1982, the Lorries' manager Dave Hall provided independent record label Red Rhino with a cassette of the group's demos. Impressed by the quality of the songs, Red Rhino label head "Tony K" (Tony Kostrzewa) signed the band and immediately released "Beating My Head" unchanged from the demo as the band's debut single. Fagan and Smith soon departed the band, to be replaced by Dave Wolfenden and Paul Southern respectively. Afterwards, bassist Southern was replaced by Leon Phillips. While numerous additional personnel changes would occur in the history of the band, Wolfenden became a mainstay and a frequent songwriting partner of Reed's during the band's most productive period. In 1983 and 1984, the band released several more singles (including "He's Read" and "Monkeys On Juice", which reached No. 9 on the NME indie chart). John Peel was an early supporter, and the band recorded two radio sessions for him in March and November 1983 (released on CD in 2014 as BBC Sessions 1983 - 1984, part of the band's 3-CD compilation See the Fire).

For upcoming episodes, Rob is spending a bit of time sharing his thoughts on the current political and macroeconomic climate. He is kicking back against the misinformation that currently permeates the mainstream media and sharing his thoughts on important subjects that affect the world economy and other aspects of our lives. This episode is about the tactics used by climate protests. As well as the need to be realistic about how the switch to cleaner energy sources happens and which power sources the world uses. KEY TAKEAWAYS The world economy cannot be sustained simply by putting up solar panels and building wind farms. Stopping the traffic creates more pollution. Lorries have to keep their fridges running, people keep their engines on to stay warm. It is not possible to stop using oil overnight, it is used in so many products. Protesting is not an effective way to find solutions. The world needs answers not blocking traffic. BEST MOMENTS ‘The overall answer is not wind and solar, it alone will not run the world economy.' ‘Wake up, smell the coffee and realise that this process is going to take a long, long time, you're not just going to cut off oil overnight.' ‘Get off your climate high horse, okay. Stop criminalising things and start providing some solutions.' ABOUT THE HOST  Rob Smallbone, the host of The Property Nomads Podcast, is on a global mission to guide your success. Zukunft Denken – Podcast

The leaves are changing, and the season is spooky. Making it the perfect time for Katie & Nate to do a new Chili Crawler episode. After the heavy episodes, its easy to agree, a lighter episode was needed. So Katie made HER OWN Chili Recipe and the voids were filled in Nates belly for a good ole fashioned recipe. With all the new series being released on Netflix, it was just to easy for our Head Creeps to choose The Sins of Our Mother to watch and immediately feel compelled to do a review on the series the covered Lorrie Vallow and Chad Daybell as they use the excuse of Religion to end the lives of Lorries children. Strap In creeps, while this may be a lighter episode, its still one sure to leave pissed off with parentings views, religion, and a crawling case, of the creeps.

There is a huge gap in efficiency between a petrol pickup and an EV pickup.   D R-K • 1 day ago I have to say that if there is one thing I wish everyone was doing the same way it is going down in China... it is changing out their fleets and getting it done. Entire fleets overnight, buses, taxis and now dump trucks. It is the one thing they continue to impress with that I wish the USA, UK , Canada or even Germany as a large economic power would beat them at. They are taking their air quality and emissions goals seriously.   e-Tripping with Adam Gebbett • 2 days ago Hi Martin,                   the most important electrified transport conversion is in the shipping industry. These vessels carry everything we consume around the world and use low grade oil to power them.     wizza • 4 days ago buses im a bus driver it would be amazing i would take pay cut to drive quite smooth bus that doesnt break down or leak deisel     PD Ken • 5 days ago QOTW.  Two of the main benefits of EVs are in reducing CO2 and in cities especially, pollution.  CO2 might be best tackled by electrifying trucks (the UK kind) and pollution by electrifying taxis and buses. All these vehicle types are likely to do far higher annual mileages than private cars and hence electrification will give the greatest benefit.  It could be argued that a battery in a car doing 15k miles a year or less is a wasted resource which could be better used in a taxi or other high mileage vehicle.   STEVE ROTHE The US Postal Service here in the US!  Why? Because they drive every road in the US 6 days a week, at slow speed and they do a LOT of stopping so regen braking would be used a LOT.   I guess they would not work that well in winter without an  auxillary heater, but seats and steering wheel should have electric heat.  Your show is TOPS!!!   Mike in Oklahoma School buses are the most important vehicles to become electric. I’m told in the US there are like three times the number of school buses versus municipal buses. Not to mention they are carrying our children and we want them to have the cleanest air to breath as possible!   Luis Janeiro I think the aim should be to maximise the quantity of fossil fuels that each kWh of battery we manage to produce is able to substitute. Many people will argue that buses or trucks are the most important, because they are bigger, more polluting. But buses or truks make quite efficient use of fossil fuels today as they transport a lot of people or goods at once. I would start electrifying the segments with the worst performance of fossil use per person-km or tonne-km today.   BRUNO ARRIOLA Not sure about other parts of the world, but here in the United States the combined annual mileage of semi-trucks (delivery trucks) is around 140 billion miles (per HDS Driving Institute https://hdstruckdrivinginstitute.com/semi-trucks-numbers/). Now just imagine if we could electrify all the trucks with the snap of a finger...   MUNAVER My answer to the question of the week is to covert ships and trains to electric propulsion and then pickup truck or utes as we call them here in Australia. Also Martyn Please can you talk about EV transformation in other markets like South America, India, Southeast Asia, Russia,  the middle east and Africa in your podcast as I hardly hear you mention any of these other important markets.   DAFYDD CHEUNG In the America, the blinding obvious vehicles that need cleaning up, preferably via full electrification. Are pickup trucks, which are not subject to any emissions regulations. Nor are they subject to a minimum mpg target. In the UK, I’d say PSVs, including all minibuses. Plus vehicles operated by councils. In addition, I’ve thought for many years, that ICE sports car in general, should be banned in their entirety. As they are dedicated to wasting as much fossil juice, in as short a period as possible.   JOHN FRUHWIRTH We should, In priority sequence, electrify the following vehicles: Buses - they carry millions of people around cities (follow China's lead) "Last Mile" delivery vehicles (vans, trucks, etc.) After all, if you bought it, a truck brought it. Long haul trucks/lorries (e.g. The Tesla Semi, etc.) Civic service vehicles (garbage trucks, street sweepers, etc.) Heavy equipment (bull dossers, back hoes, road graders, etc.)   YANN T FROM MONTREAL in my opinion, the most critical segment that needs electrification are semi trucks (53 footers). Lorries as you would say. Smaller vans too for professionals. They transport a lot of goods around the world. They are constantly on the road burning a lot of dirty old diesel. They could be fitted with a lot of batteries if it could be fitted on the trailer for longer range, maybe? Image a world where all trucks are electrified. No more diesel, no more particules, no more black smoke coming out of huge exhaust pipes, and so much torque to move around heavy loads.   JOHN BALL The most important transportation segment to electrify in The United States is large tractor trailer trucks. They will convert to electric drive as soon as it is more profitable to do so and production capacity ramps up. When trucks are electric the large service plazas all along our highways will convert  to high capacity superchargers servicing trucks and cars. The Interesting Health & Safety Podcast

In this episode of The Interesting Health & Safety Podcast, Colin covers a subject which doesn't usually come to mind when performing health and safety procedures, and that is Driving At Work. Colin explains how driving can be one of the most hazardous activities an employee can undertake and shares the necessary checks and measures required for your company to be in compliance with the law.  KEY TAKEAWAYS  The first step is to check driving at work is included in your company's policies and procedures. The 5 key questions you should ask yourself:   Does your health & safety statement cover road safety?   Is there a top-level commitment to work-related road safety?   Do you have adequate safety systems to allow you to manage work-related road safety effectively?   Do you monitor performance to ensure your policy is effective?   Have you undertaken a risk assessment?   Ensure your drivers are competent and sufficient to drive safely, perform health assessments and check their driving records, even if they are using their personal car for work-related activity.   Checks to ensure all company vehicles are fit for use, are they being properly maintained? Do they have valid MOTs? Lorries should be checked every 6-8 weeks minimum.   Consider the route your drivers need to take. If they covering long distances, limiting driving hours and providing a hotel room for the night is a sure safe way to prevent falling asleep at the wheel. Consider providing additional training for the drivers who cover the most mileage.  Have a procedure in place in case of emergencies, make sure the staff know what to do in case the vehicles break down or have an accident.     BEST MOMENTS  ‘Report any vehicle defects and don't drive defective vehicles, have the confidence to say no'  ‘Driving at work is an important part of running business, so let's make sure we get good systems in place'   ‘It's estimated that up to a third of all traffic accidents involve somebody who is at work at the time'  ‘Some prescription drugs can have an adverse effect on people's ability to drive'  ‘My advice is switch phones off when you're driving'    HOST BIO  ‘Making health and safety as important as everything else we do.'   This is the belief that Colin is passionate about and through his consultancy Influential Management Group (IMG) is able to spread into Industry.   Colin works at a strategic level with company owners and board members. He helps business leaders establish and achieve their health and safety ambitions.  He has developed a number of leading competency improvement programmes that are delivered across industry and his strengths are his ability to take a practical approach to problem-solving and being able to liaise at all levels within an organisation.  Colin also runs a company that vets contractors online and a network that develops and support H&S consultancies to become better businesses.  Colin chairs the Construction Dust Partnership, -an industry collaboration directly involving many organisations, including the Health and Safety Executive.  He is a Post Graduate Tutor at Strathclyde University and a highly sought after health and safety speaker and trainer.   He has a Post Graduate Certificate in Safety and Risk management, an engineering degree and is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH).  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Lorries backing up in Kent, a Mars bar shortage, and no more Rome city breaks – these are just some of the things that we have been warned about when it comes to a no deal Brexit. But what will really happen? Lara Prendergast talks to two people who disagree on almost everything. Lord Peter Lilley, Tory MP, has said that a no-deal Brexit would be better than the status quo; he's joined by Ian Dunt, editor of politics.co.uk, who thinks that it would be an ‘unmitigated disaster'. It was a pretty fiery exchange from the two Brexit experts – the debate ranged from nuclear isotopes to Chinese kettles. Tune in to make your own mind up about no deal. 完整文稿看周六微信第三条,你懂的呦~ This is NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Mark Griffiths in Beijing. Here is the news.China's environmental watchdog has named and shamed Hohhot, the capital of North China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region for poor air and water quality. The Ministry of Environmental Protection said various violations were found in the city, including excessive emissions, inadequate pollution treatment facilities and lax supervision by local regulators.Inspection teams had been sent to Hohhot in May and June to check on pollution prevention and control. It is one of the 30 cities targeted in a nationwide environmental inspection this year.According to the inspectors, the problems of excessive pollution and waste are easy to see in the city. The lack of sewage treatment facilities has led to around 100,000 tons of untreated dirty water flowing out of the city each day.The ministry ordered local environmental authorities to harshly punish the polluters and submit rectification measures to the ministry within 20 working days.Inspection teams have also been sent to Beijing and its neighboring Tianjin municipality and the provinces of Hebei, Henan and Shanxi. This is NEWS Plus Special English.Domestic and overseas journalists have been invited to cover events commemorating the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War being held in Beijing next month.Grand celebrations will be held in Beijing on Sept. 2 and 3 to mark the anniversary of the Chinese people's victory in the war against Japanese aggression and the world's anti-Fascist war.The organizers say overseas journalists who wish to cover the event should register on a specific website between Aug. 3 and 18.A press center will be set up in Beijing to provide information services for domestic and overseas reporters.China announced plans to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of WWII in June. It will invite foreign military representatives to participate in a parade on Sept. 3 in Beijing.President Xi Jinping will speak at the event. Representatives of veterans, civilians who supported the military during the war and relatives of the fallen will also take part in the parade. This is NEWS Plus Special English. The Chinese government has proposed extending serious illness insurance to cover more of the population. The proposal by the State Council, China's cabinet, states that the insurance should benefit all urban and rural residents covered by the nation's basic health insurance by the end of this year.Serious illness insurance, so far available only on a trial basis, reimburses patients when their medical bills far exceed basic medical insurance. It is intended to help prevent people being dragged into poverty by medical costs.According to official statistics, the number of Chinese people covered by the scheme has surpassed 700 million, half the total population. The system should be integrated with the entire healthcare infrastructure by 2017, connecting to other programs including the medical assistance system. The system was established in 2008 to allocate money to help disadvantaged people purchase medical insurance and to subsidize healthcare not included in insurance programs. You are listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Mark Griffiths in Beijing.Beijing's first private mental health clinic has opened, breaking the monopoly of state-owned hospitals. The clinic in downtown Beijing is the first private mental health medical institution approved by the health authorities. At present there are a number of psychological counseling agencies in the city that only provide counseling services but not medical treatment. The clinic is also China's first mental health clinic to combine online and in-person services.Fifteen mental health experts from major hospitals in the city will offer medical services at the clinic as part of a move to encourage doctors to serve patients in multiple hospitals and clinics.China had 4.3 million severely mentally ill patients on official record at the end of last year.A five-year plan for mental health work set a goal of controlling the conditions of more than 80 percent of people with severe mental illnesses by 2020, with treatment covering at least 80 percent of schizophrenia cases. To address a grave lack of mental health professionals, the plan encourages health institutes to set up psychology clinics and strengthen staff training, raising the projected number of doctors specializing in mental disorders to 40,000 by 2020.This is NEWS Plus Special English. The Chinese language will be tested as a foreign language for Russia's college entrance exam starting next year.Russia's Ministry of Education and Science announced that they will start the trial period in some selected cities and regions including Moscow, St. Petersburg and some Far East regions. The ministry is now reviewing texts and technical procedures pertaining to the Chinese language testing. In Russia, college enrollments use high school graduation tests as the only criteria for students to go to college, unlike in China where students have to take a separate test for college.Currently their mandatory foreign languages for college enrollment are English, French, Spanish and German. This is NEWS Plus Special English.Beijing will ban half of all cars from the road from Aug. 20 to Sept. 3 to ease traffic during the World athletics championships and the World War II victory parade. The municipal government says cars will be allowed on alternating days based on odd or even number plates during the period. The same ban was used last year during the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings in Beijing. The ban is expected not only to give Beijing a more free flow of traffic, but also improve the air quality.Eighty percent of official business cars will also be off the road. Factories will be closed during the period to ensure clean air for both of the events.Work which produces dust on building sites will also be suspended during the period. Lorries carrying building materials will be banned from the roads. Other delivery lorries will not be affected, and the number and frequencies of buses will be increased. Now the news continues.A deer breeding center at a nature reserve in northeast China is being used to increase food for wild endangered Siberian tigers.Fifty-five spotted deer, mostly aged two to three years, were sent to the breeding base in the state-level nature reserve in Jilin Province. They will be freed after being taught to survive in the wild. The center is a joint project between the World Wildlife Fund and Jilin Province. The first phase covers an area of 90 hectares with an investment of 600,000 yuan, roughly 98,000 U.S. dollars.Red deer and other prey for Siberian tigers and Amur leopards will be bred at the center in the future. The Siberian tiger is also known as Amur or Manchurian tiger. They mainly live in east Russia, northeast China and northern parts of the Korean Peninsula. Fewer than 500 Siberian tigers are believed to survive in the wild, with an estimated 18 to 22 living in the provinces of Heilongjiang and Jilin. The world population of Amur leopards is less than 60, and most of them live in Russia.Since the start of the joint cooperation in supplementary prey for Siberian tigers, continual monitoring showed the wild Siberian tigers and Amur leopards have been spotted in the area close to the breeding sites. This is NEWS Plus Special English.More than half a million specially bred male mosquitoes are being released on an island in southern China every week to fight dengue fever. The mosquitoes produced at a science park factory in Guangdong province can make their female mating partners infertile.Scientists have managed to reduce the number of mosquitoes in some areas of the island by more than 90 percent.Last year, China reported 46,000 dengue fever cases, compared with around 1,000 in previous years. Most of the cases were in Guangdong.Last year, the provincial capital Guangzhou reported more than 35,000 cases of dengue, which causes fever and joint pain. This number accounted for more than 80 percent of all reported cases in the province, including five deaths. The mosquito factory was opened in July and can produce 10 million male mosquitoes every week infected with bacteria that exists widely in many insects, including mosquitoes.Research shows that eggs produced by mosquitoes that have mated with the infected male counterparts are infertile. This will cause a decrease in the number of mosquitoes living in the wild after a certain period.Currently, 500,000 mosquitoes are produced every week at the factory and released on a 3-square-kilometer island in a Guangzhou suburb. You are listening to NEWS Plus Special English. I'm Mark Griffiths in Beijing. An umbrella company in east China's Jiangxi Province has earned its place in the Guinness Book of World Records for creating the world's largest umbrella. The umbrella is around 23 meters in diameter and 14-and-a-half meters in height. It has been certificated by Chinese representatives of Guinness World Records. The umbrella weighs almost 6 tonnes and covers an area of 430 square meters when opened. The previous world record was held by an umbrella in India, which measured 17 meters in diameter and 11 meters in height. This is NEWS Plus Special English. Some 2.8 million people visited Taiwan from the Chinese mainland, Hong Kong and Macao in the first six months of this year. That number accounted for 55 percent of the almost five million visitors to the island from January to June. The mainland was the biggest contributor of visitors to Taiwan over the six months period. Compared with the same period last year, 120,000 more mainlanders made the trip across the Taiwan Straits.Japanese and South Koreans ranked second and third, with 750,000 and 330,000 visitors respectively.Seventy percent of travelers went to the island for sightseeing, 8 percent for business and 4 percent for family visits. Last year, the annual number of visitors to Taiwan exceeded nine million for the first time. Taiwan is expecting 10 million visitors this year. The data also showed that 6-and-a-half million Taiwanese people traveled overseas in the first six months this year. Almost half of them visited the mainland, while just over a quarter went to Japan.
