On the penultimate episode of this podcast, we're talking about the things that make us feel happy @ home, courtesy of the wonderful crew over at Sixpenny. (Remember the chair and a half?! They're responsible!) Also: our final—and dare we say most exclusive—Thingie guest… Sixpenny's furniture just makes us feel GOOD?! Check out the Neva Chair, order some fabric swatches, consider the power of a slipcover, explore the best-looking storage ottomans you ever did see. A whole bunch of little ways we're improving our space and how we feel in it: flowers from Park Deli, lighting from In Common With and Audo Copenhagen, a quilt from Aloka, high-touch framing from Ulfig Projects, recaning from Yorkville Caning, collections of limoges boxes(shout-out to the Midwest of Cannon Falls Dairy Queen collection) and niche food servingware, and rugs from WovenyHome, Baby Blue Studio, and Block Shop. Some favorite fabric sources: Maharam, Block Shop, Svenskt Tenn, Caroline Z Hurley for Schumacher (and Schumacher in general), Bolé Road Textiles, and Ottoline. Cam's Thingies include Greek mythology, The Corpse Bride, and Harriet the Spy the TV series. Take a browse around Sixpenny's furniture offerings—they're doing a really fantastic job. You'll see. Thank you to Nuuly, both for sponsoring today's episode and for making it easier to get dressed during these hardest times of the year for CLOTHES (spring for Erica, summer for Claire, thanks for asking). Have we sold you on Nuuly yet? Use cases: trying out a bunch of jeans (or, gasp, shorts), dealing with wedding season, test-driving a bunch o' new looks without having to own them, navigating maternity and post-partum dressing…we could go on. And! Right now you can get $28 off your first month of Nuuly when you sign up with the code ATHINGORTWO Starting off with our pre-season preparation, we're curating a no-skips underwear drawer with help from Laura Reilly's newsletter (and Claire's love for the Natori Bliss Brief lives on!). We're also giving our shoes TLC at Leather Spa and getting a little post-winter warm-up with Tan-Luxe The Gradual, Tanning Water, and St. Tropez's Face Mist and Bronzing Mousse.  Ok, onto clothing and accessories! Porselli x Alex Mill ballet flats and Chalo cowboy boots have been in Erica's rotation, and though she's already found jean shorts from Agolde (ahem, via Nuuly), she's looking for sporty shorts like Justin's. The barefoot shoe crowd got us curious about the Xero Genesis, we're going to The Consistency Project for jeans, and Claire is growing a jean shacket collection, intentional or not.  To try to reinvigorate our excitement for getting dressed, we're reading Emilia Petrarca's piece on embracing glamour for Harper's Bazaar.  Respect to Rebecca Jennings for naming the Big Baby trend. How do you get yourself more excited to get dressed up? Let us know at 833-632-5463, podcast@athingortwohq.com, @athingortwohq, or our Geneva. So Claire & Erica launched 831 Stories, an entertainment media company built around romance novels. And that's what we'll be exploring in the coming months. Claire Mazur and Erica Cerulo are the founders of the modern romantic fiction entertainment company 831 Stories. The two met in college, and after graduating, Claire worked in the arts and Erica in editorial, but they stayed close and constantly shared ideas. In 2010, they partnered up and launched Of a Kind, an e-commerce company that sold limited-edition pieces and crafted meaningful editorial content about the designers behind them. Of a Kind grew a loyal following of customers who loved Claire and Erica's keen sense of style and humor. In 2015, they sold the business to Bed Bath & Beyond and stayed at the company for four more years doing marketing and strategy. In 2019, BB&B closed Of a Kind, which allowed Claire and Erica to slow down for the first time in years. They took a pause and thought about their next steps. Realizing the potential of the romance space (and how much they personally resonated with the content), they founded 831 Stories. The company now has a publishing imprint with Simon & Schuster, and their first book, Big Fan by Alexandra Romanoff, was published this past September.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Claire Mazur and Erica Cerulo's careers are intertwined and build around a deep friendship that goes back to their days as undergrads at the University of Chicago. They got set up on a friend date, hit it off and remained close ever since. "We always knew the minor characters in each other's work lives," says Erica. After graduating, both of them moved to New York. Erica worked in magazines at Lucky and Details, while Claire worked in the theatre world. Then, their first business idea was born: Of a Kind, an ecomm site that stocked goods from over 600 independent designers and makers. Claire and Erica's brand was born in the heyday of New York's fashion startup boom alongside Rent the Runway and Warby Parker. In an exciting turn, Of a Kind was acquired by Bed, Bath and Beyond, only to be shuttered a few years later. In this episode of Lean the F*ck Out, we talk with Erica Cerulo and Claire Mazur talk about building a business with a friend. Erica and Claire talk about their successful online store, Of A Kind, and their recently released book Work Wife: The Power of Female Friendship to Drive Successful Businesses. We discuss the many different ways partnering with a friend can make your business successful and how you can find the right friend to partner with, among other amazing tips from these friends who have kicked ass in their own business. Building a Business with a Friend Episode Highlights: Vulnerability and transparency is key to a strong partnership. When you start a business it becomes all encompassing to your life. What to look for and think about in a friend who could be a good partner: trust and respect in your relationship. similar work ethic and similarly high standards. Learning to fight/have constructive disagreements early on is really productive for any partnership. Get comfortable with conflict – the more you practice the easier it is. How to spot potential red flags in the friendship that should not become a partnership: If your friend is someone it is hard to plan something small with, they will likely be someone you can’t plan a business with. Go on a stressful trip together - see how people respond to difficult situations. Not every friend would make a good partner, be aware of red flags. Because of the history of workplace culture, we’ve only seen a patriarchal structure. The way women work is different. It is important to be passionate about it the business you are about to build. Trust your gut. If you made the rules behind your company, you can break those rules. Be open to evolving. You don’t have to know everything before you start your business. You will learn along the way, and there is always someone willing to help.
