Fares and Greg break down Episode 3 of HBO's Lanterns, titled "OutKast" — a bold, nonlinear origin story that finally reveals why John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) was chosen as a Green Lantern, framed as a job interview with a Guardian (Laura Linney). We dig into John's childhood, his father John Stewart Sr.'s (Sherman Augustus) rejection of Abin Sur's ring, and how this rewrites what we thought we knew about how Lanterns are chosen. We also talk about the choice to pause the Rushville mystery and Sinestro cliffhanger from Episode 2, whether the flashback structure works this early in the season, and how this episode stacks up against the premiere and "Trust Fall."
HBO's Lanterns has officially arrived — and somehow, it's even better than we expected. Kaya and I Ken Not podcast host Kendrick are joined by special guest Ryan Bailey of So Bad It's Good with Ryan Bailey to break down the first three episodes of Lanterns HBO and DC Studios' new take on the Green Lantern universe starring Aaron Pierre as John Stewart and Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan. We came into Lanterns with high expectations, but the series has already exceeded them. Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler are fantastic as two Green Lanterns who could not be more different. John Stewart is controlled, observant and determined to prove himself, while Hal Jordan is an experienced, stubborn veteran carrying secrets of his own. That clash makes their partnership — and their performances — one of the strongest parts of the series. **SPOILERS AHEAD for Lanterns Episodes 1–3!** We break down the mystery introduced in Episode 1, as Hal is tasked with training John and the two head to Rushville, Nebraska, where a bizarre case involving dead extraterrestrials begins to reveal something much bigger. The episode also jumps through time and gives us the shocking revelation that Hal Jordan is dead in 2026, immediately turning the season into a mystery about not only what happened in Rushville, but what eventually happened to Hal. In Episode 2, “Trust Fall,” the investigation expands as John and Hal learn more about the terrifying Manhunter threat potentially hiding in Rushville. While working separately, we also begin to see just how different their approaches to being Green Lanterns really are — and why trusting each other may be as important as solving the case. Then Episode 3, “OutKast,” takes us deep into John Stewart's origin story. Through his unusual Green Lantern interview and flashbacks to his childhood and military career, we learn how John was shaped by his family, his experiences as a Black man in America and the expectations placed on him long before he ever wore the ring. We also discover that the Guardians may have much bigger plans for John — including the revelation that he isn't simply being recruited to work alongside Hal. And this is exactly why we think you don't have to be a superhero fan to love Lanterns. If you're a fan of strong acting, complicated characters, mystery and genuinely good storytelling, there is something here for you.We also get into some of the conversation happening around the show — including the sudden attempts to rewrite history around Ryan Reynolds' 2011 Green Lantern movie now that Lanterns is being praised, and why some viewers seem uncomfortable with the new series directly acknowledging the realities of being Black in America through John Stewart's story. Is Lanterns already proving that the DCU can tell superhero stories that feel completely different from traditional comic-book television? Are Aaron Pierre and Kyle Chandler the perfect John Stewart and Hal Jordan? And after Episodes 1–3… where exactly is this mystery taking us? Join us as we break it all down.#Lanterns #GreenLantern #DCU #AaronPierre #JohnStewartFOLLOW US ON INSTAGRAM HERESUBSCRIBE TO OUR PATREON HEREOH YEAH WE ON THREADS HEREWHAT? YOU WANT OUR FACEBOOK? Hello Lantern Corps! The action this week was between two towns instead of time periods. We had some mysteries answered but more questions raised. Join us as we cover Lanterns "Trust Fall." Hal rudely awakens Jon for a flying lesson. The instructions are fly. John does not even move. But he creates a live bird construct from the ring. Hal has already booked him a plane ticket to Coast City to pick up the Lantern to charge the ring up. So all he really wanted to do was get John out of town. With John gone, he heads to main street finding everyone in a town hall. After a disagreement with Sheriff Kane, and a request to leave town from his lawyer, he heads to the morgue. He steals all the alien bodies. He has found out that the metal detectors are really alien detectors. He does not listen to Sheriff Kane and questions Will about the tech and targeting aliens. He is told to leave town, but refuses and gets shot. He is taken to the hospital and questioned by Kerry after he wakes up from surgery. The hospital is brand new and has no other people there being treated. John is followed to Coast City and to Hal's mansion. A rich guy gave it to him for saving his son, but it is barely lived in. John recovers the lantern from the pocket dimension and feeds John's alien plant Earl. But he is kidnapped by the aliens. They are led by Antaan or is it Atrocitus the future Red Lantern. Their planet was devastated by Manhunters. Manhunters are shapeshifting robots made by the Guardians. After they failed, the Guardians moved to create the Lantern Corps. The aliens are in town because they believe Abin Sur had a Manhunter with him when he crashed. The believe he is hiding in town. They give John an ultimatum, let them know the identity of the Manhunter or they blow up the town. John reports all this to Hal. He also still has his bird construct with him. A feat that takes a lot of will power. Hal files to the Lantern prison to ask rebel Green Lantern, Sinestro, about the Manhunters. He says they are the 2nd biggest threat Hal is facing. Jong and Michael are back for another edition of the podcast. Before the duo get to their weekly review of Lanterns they first discuss the news that a new DC series is coming to HBO Max, "The People vs Gorilla Grodd" which will be a mockumentary docuseries. Then the guys dive into a spoiler filled discussion on episode 2 of Lanterns, joined by a late arriving Chalice Williams of Reel Movie Junkie... oh why is she late? Oh you know doing awesome things like interviewing the cast of The Paper on Peacock. The group discuss Kyle Chandler's love for Hal Jordan, how he's been able to potray the disgruntled Lantern, why his suit up sequence wasn't done with much fanfare, why John's demonstration with the rings shows he was born for this, what the reveal of Antaan means for the series, Hal's investigation methods, Manhunters, and more! Also on Wax Episodic: We cover these other intelligent, engaging, oftentimes delightfully twisted series: Severance (Apple TV): A mind-bending show where office workers' minds are severed into two selves, one that exists only at work, and the other only outside. It's beautiful, brilliant, funny, gripping, mysterious, thrilling, thought-provoking, and meticulously crafted in every way. Hosted by Jason and Karen's innies. Fallout (Amazon): A crazy retro-futuristic, post-apocalyptic melange of wholesomeness and depravity. One of the best looking shows on TV, funny as hell, violent AF (but in a cartoony way), with a great cast, including Ella Purnell (Yellowjackets) and Walton Goggins (The White Lotus, The Righteous Gemstones). Not to be missed! Hosted by Jason, Kara, and Kasi. Pluribus (Apple TV): Everyone is transformed into a pleasant hive mind — except for Carol (Rhea Seehorn), the most miserable woman on the planet, who must save the world from happiness. It sounds weird, and it is… in the best way. Created by the great Vince Gilligan, of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Hosted by Jason and Karen. IT: Welcome to Derry (HBO): A fun, scary, and surprisingly great prequel to the 2016 and 2019 IT movies, with Pennywise stalking the children of 1962 Derry. A mix of heart, mystery, charm, and some shockingly disturbing Nightmare on Elm Street-esque horror. Cohosted by Shawn of Strange Indeed. Alien: Earth (FX): From the brilliant Noah Hawley (Fargo, Legion), this one really scratches that sci-fi itch. A greedy corporate tech overlord transfers the consciousness of a group of terminally ill children into highly performant synth bodies. And the Xenomorph is in it, too. Also, Tim Olyphant! We're haggard and recovering from illness, but we're still talking HBO's Lanterns! We discuss episode 1x02, “Trust Fall”! Why is John able to keep that bird construct alive while unconscious? Is Antaan Atrocitus, or he a, ahem, red herring? Is William Macon Green Arrow, or he working for him? Wait, where are all the patients in this hospital? There's so much to discuss!
Finally, a dong! The second episode of Lanterns has naked aliens, a suspicious town hall meeting, a freeway foot chase, a strange bird and a ton of lore getting dropped on the heads of unknowing normies. We talk about how this show is doing a great job of being something non-superhero folks want to watch while also getting in more nerdy background stuff than almost any other show or movie. Before that: Tom Holland is rich! Is Batman being blocked by Paramount? Could The Odyssey be making even more money if it left out one F bomb? All this and more! A ghost-town mystery, a ticking 48-hour clock, and a Green Lantern who may already be dead - this episode turns Trustfall into a full-blown paranoia machine. Mario Busto and Zachary Newton break down the eerie, stripped-down feel of Lanterns Season 1, Episode 2, and dig into the questions that make this chapter impossible to shake: Who is the Manhunter? Why is Sinestro suddenly the biggest name in the room? And what exactly is John Stewart hiding? The hosts zoom in on the episode's biggest reveal - that the threat is bigger than one missing ring or one small Nebraska town. Between the alien tech, the empty hospital, the creepy football-stadium scanners, and the bizarrely sparse worldbuilding, they unpack how the show makes everything feel off on purpose. They also debate whether the “budgety” look is really a limitation or a deliberate strategy to make Rushville feel like a place where something is deeply wrong. You'll hear them break down: • The 48-hour countdown and why it instantly raises the stakes • The Manhunter reveal and why the show keeps pointing suspicion at different people • John Stewart's strange power, especially that bird he creates without a ring • Sinestro's warning that John may be the bigger threat than Hal • The creepy possibility that Detective Carrie Kane is playing a much bigger game than anyone realizesMario and Zachary also dig into the episode's strongest comparison points, including Breaking Bad, Pluribus, Slow Horses, and even classic Black Mirror dread, to explain why this chapter feels so unnervingly grounded. Along the way, they wrestle with Hal's possible fate, the mystery of the lantern itself, and whether the show is quietly setting up a much bigger betrayal than the one we think we're watching. If you're hooked by conspiracy, comic-book lore, and shows that hide their biggest answers in plain sight, this is essential listening. Trustfall doesn't just move the plot forward - it makes you question who in this town can be trusted at all. Inspired by the extraordinary way a young swallow drops from its nest into flight, Ashley explores what it means to meet the present moment before certainty arrives.Through a childhood trust fall that ended on the kitchen floor, her struggle to surrender to the flow of dancing, Ram Dass's invitation to Be Here Now and Alan Watts's unforgettable falling cat, this episode asks whether trust is really about knowing we will be caught - or remaining soft enough to respond when we don't yet know what will hold us.For neurodivergent minds accustomed to analysing the past, rehearsing the future and consciously predicting the next move, presence can feel far less peaceful than wellness culture often suggests. But perhaps presence is not the absence of uncertainty. Perhaps it is the moment uncertainty becomes usable. This week's Microdosing Meaning practice invites you to walk in on yourself worrying, ruminating or simply wandering through the ongoing stream of thought - and then walk in on the moment itself. What might become available when you meet it through awe, curiosity and play? The episode closes with a gentle Yoga Nidra for cultivating trust: a loving homage to one of Ashley's favourite Yoga Nidra teachers, Ally Boothroyd. Settle into the support beneath you, follow the swallow into open air and take a trust fall into the medicine of presence itself.Ashley's eight-week From Mask to Map group coaching programme begins on 15 September 2026 and is limited to ten people. Post long weekend, things get absolutely wild. First up: the giveaway nobody saw coming. Christian reflects on the Cabanas he never expected anyone to want, only to discover they’re the most popular item the show has ever given away. Emails at 2 a.m., desperate pleas from listeners, and complete chaos ensue leaving Christian stunned and declaring, “I’ve never known anything like it.” Then, the conversation takes a very different turn. Christian shares a story that will make you laugh, cringe, and maybe double-check your own knowledge of the law. While at the beach, he witnessed something completely shocking and, in classic Christian fashion, admits he didn’t even know it was illegal. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Pastor Caleb Cole opens our series The God Who Gave with a message about trust. Looking at Isaiah 9, Galatians 4, and Romans 8, he reminds us that God's greatest gift—His Son—is proof we can trust His timing, His plans, and His heart. When everything feels uncertain, Jesus is enough.
