Ryan opens the discussion by resetting some expectations regarding the value of online education. In the wake of COVID-19, the ability to learn anything anytime anywhere seemed poised to severely disrupt higher education. Ryan has a different perspective. He believes that online learning is uniquely suited to early-career individuals who already have their foot in the door somewhere. They have at least some interest in learning and a goal or two in mind.Ryan and fellow investors believe higher education should serve as a pathway to a good job and there are a lot of elements missing from the online education experience that is gained in more social settings such as soft skills and leadership behaviors. They direct their investment dollars to support companies that help bridge this gap outside the traditional emphasis on a college degree. The episode wraps by examining the role community colleges should play in making education more accessible and affordable and why they struggle to achieve this goal.Discover more about University Ventures Fund by visiting their website and following on LinkedIn or @UniVenturesFund on Twitter. Good writing is not complicated. As one guest notes, “it’s about injecting personality, making it engage and entertaining for your audience. But most importantly, it's about structure. … How is one paragraph leading to the next, how are they connected? The worst kind of writing, and we all see it all the time, is just rambling. It's not at all clear. People get lost and the idea gets lost.”   This is the second part of our two-episode conversation about the value of effective business writing.   In this episode, Jeff Bradford, Laura Brown, and Ryan Craig join us again to discuss:   How writing and critical thinking go hand-in-hand—and why practice makes perfect.   Why employers are often reluctant to teach remedial writing skills.   The characteristics of good writing: storytelling, personality, metaphors, and symbols.   Websites and other hacks that professionals can use to improve the quality of their writing.   Jeff Bradford leads a PR and advertising agency, The Bradford Group. A former journalist, he wrote a 2019 Forbes article entitled, “Why Writing Ability Is The Most Important Skill In Business (And How To Acquire It)”.   Laura Brown is a writer and writing coach, and the author of two bestselling books: “How to Write Anything: A Complete Guide,” and “The Only Business Writing Book You'll Ever Need.”   Ryan Craig is the Co-Founder and Managing Director of University Ventures, and the author of “College Disrupted: The Great Unbundling of Higher Education,” and “A New U: Faster + Cheaper Alternatives to College.”

Believe it or not, some of the key fundamentals of university haven’t changed much in over a thousand years. But with the US student debt crisis continuing to make headlines, employers’ talent needs rapidly evolving, and software still eating the world, traditional higher education - like other industries before it - is now undergoing change like never before. Today on Tickets I’m joined by Daniel Pianko. Co-Founder and Managing Director at University Ventures, a New York based venture capital firm focused on the future of higher education and the pathways that lead from education to employment. In this wide-ranging conversation Daniel shares his insights into the importance of the live experience in learning, the knock-on effects of urbanization, and why having a great product can matter a lot less than you think. #449: Faster and Cheaper Alternatives to College

Every year the cost of a four-year college degree goes up, forcing young people to take on massive amounts of student debt for an education that often doesn't even prepare them well for the jobs of today. My guest today argues that there’s a better, cheaper, and faster way to prepare for gainful employment. His name is Ryan Craig, he's the Managing Director of University Ventures, an investment firm reimagining the future of higher education, and the author of A New U: Faster + Cheaper Alternatives to College. We begin our conversation discussing the disconnect between a college education and the job skills employers are looking for and why higher ed continues to get more expensive each year. Ryan then digs into alternative education models that include boot camps, income-share programs, and apprenticeships that are not only faster and more affordable than college, but also put an emphasis on real-life job skills. In today's episode, Tom interviews Ryan Craig. Ryan is an attorney, an entrepreneur, and a venture investor — he's also a leading critic of higher education. When he sees half of the people attending post-secondary failing to earn degrees (and many of them leaving with piles of debt) he sees an emergency. As he would say, “the patient is bleeding out on the table.”   Ryan is the co-founder of University Ventures, an organization that is reimagining the future of higher education and creating new pathways from education to employment. They're working to make higher education more affordable, helping employers think differently about how and where they discover talent, and pioneering entirely new approaches to learning. His new book, A New U: Faster + Cheaper Alternatives to College, also outlines a radically different post-secondary landscape — one where everyone has access to free, or at least debt-free, training for a high-paying first job.   Tom and Ryan dive into discussions about his book, A New U; his organization, University Ventures; and why he has set his focus on post-secondary affordability and employability. Ryan also describes the last-mile training programs from UV and how they differ from higher ed courses; gives his 60-second solutions to several big problems in education today; and lets us know if he thinks online learning, microcredentials, and artificial intelligence in education are overrated or underrated.

Venture Capitalist Argues For Cheaper And Faster Alternatives to College

Access to higher education is a big topic these days, but debates about how to expand access often assume a one-size-fits-all model of what college should be. A new book due out this fall argues for the creation of colleges of many shapes and sizes, including a new set of low-cost options that are hyper-focused on helping students who just can’t afford a four-year campus experience get a first job. The book is called A New U: Faster + Cheaper Alternatives to College, and it is written by a venture capitalist making bets on which alternatives he thinks have the most promise. The author is Ryan Craig, Co-Founder and Managing Director of University Ventures, and in the book he acknowledges a key drawback to the vision he is outlining. Many of these new college alternatives will intentionally leave out general education, and extracurriculars—or time for pranks with roommates. Craig stresses that such full-service colleges will continue to survive for those who can afford them, but that providing more career-focused options will be better for social mobility and providing meaningful access without high degrees of debt. Is this definition of access the most practical way to achieve broader higher-education access, or is it giving up on a segment of students? EdSurge sat down with Craig to talk about the new book, and why he thinks the debate about college access should put less emphasis on the bachelor’s degree.

AirBnB has dramatically altered the landscape for the hotel, tourism, and real estate sectors. Uber and Lyft have done the same to transportation. But, how come we haven't seen the same in American higher education? Ryan Craig, Managing Director of University Ventures, engages that question in his new book, entitled College Disrupted: The Great Unbundling of Higher Education (Palgrave McMillan, 2015). The author is critical of the current higher educational system in the US, which he says focuses too much on the "four Rs": Rankings, Research, Real Estate, and Rah! (college sports) rather than on teaching and learning. For this reason, students graduate (or don't) without the skills needed to actually get a job. In the book, Craig suggests that universities should unbundle the various services they offer and allow students to choose things that they need or want. He compares this unbundling to the current trend in cable providers, as many people are leaving behind the mammoth packages with 300 channels and instead pairing down their wants to more specific options, especially via the web. We haven't really seen this in higher education, yet, but this book shows that the current system could be moving in that direction.
