We return this week with a blast from the past with Rock Mag '87. In the 80's, one of the only sources of rock news and information were magazines. Rock magazine titans of the 80's included Metal Edge, Circus, and Hit Parader. In June of 1987, Hit Parader released their supersized anniversary issue. Featuring Ozzy Osbourne and Randy Rhoads on the cover, this giant issue is a great time capsule of a magical time in rock and metal music. In this episode, we scan through the magazine and share our thoughts on several of the stories. Some of the news items, rumors, and letters to the editor are pretty entertaining in hindsight. Topics covered include Steven Pearcy, Whitesnake, Autograph, Black Sabbath, David Lee Roth, KIX, Ace Frehley, Megadeth, Rob Halford, Eric Carr, and tons more! We're getting cerebral this week while talking about the hottest band in the land as we chat with the authors of KISS and Philosophy; a book that seeks to enlighten you in a rock and roll way. On the surface, you'd probably think that KISS songs are simply about groupies and having fun. To a point, you'd be right. However, as this book seeks to prove, there are a lot of poignant statements made throughout KISS' lyrical history. Editor Court Lewis and contributor Matt Alschbach (along with others) provide an interesting case study in the ways that KISS' music parallels philosophy by Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, and more. Don't worry, this is no stuffy read; it's written for the layman and carries some great humor throughout. Plus, these guys are died-in-the-wool KISS fans and you'll get lots of cool nuggets throughout. In this discussion, Matt and Court share their personal KISStories as well as help explain the main points of the book. We had a great time talking to these guys and know you will enjoy listening. You can pick up KISS and Philosophy: Wiser Than Hell at most major book retailers or direct from Amazon at https://www.amazon.com/KISS-Philosophy-Popular-Culture/dp/0812694910 We hope you enjoy our talk on KISS and Philosophy and SHARE with a friend! With the sad news this week of a legends passing, this week we are Remembering EVH. Eddie Van Halen passed away from cancer this week at age 65. The news shook the world impacted us personally. To help process this information, we decided to go live on Youtube and Facebook. It was a cathartic chat between ourselves and several guests that joined us. This week we bring you our in-depth chat with producer & engineer Mike Fraser. Mike's credit list is a Who's Who of rock and metal music. In this conversation, we talk to Mike about many of his notable projects. Getting his start at the legendary Little Mountain Studios in Vancouver in the early 80's, Mike Fraser was in good company right away; working with such production greats as Bob Rock and Bruce Fairbairn among many others. From his early days working on projects such as Rush's Exit...Stage Left, Brian Adams' Reckless, and Loverboy's Notorious, Mike got his feet wet quickly on quality albums. Things would go up a notch in 1987 with Aerosmith's Permanent Vacation. Fraser, Rock, and Fairbairn would collaborate on the making of this comeback album from the Bad Boys from Boston. In this episode, Mike shares some cool behind the scenes stories about making of the album and working with the members of the band during big change in their lives. Mike also reflects on the making of the Pump album that would come out in 1989 and how the experience differed from the previous one. Another pair of albums of great interest to Decibel Geek listener are from the short-lived supergroup Blue Murder. In this conversation, Mike shares his thoughts on working with the band and his opinion on its material. Additionally, Mike Fraser has worked on 5 AC/DC albums starting with 1989's The Razors Edge. In this chat, Mike discusses what it's like working for such a legendary band, their personalities, and more. There have been rumors that AC/DC have recently been in Vancouver working on an album. Does Mike shed any light on these rumors? We asked, you'll have to listen to hear his answer. Other artists discussed include Dan Reed Network, Bad English, The Cult, Thunder, Coverdale/Page, Dio, Metallica and more! We truly thank Mike Fraser for joining us this week and can't wait to have him back on in the future! We hope you enjoy our Conversation with Mike Fraser and SHARE with a friend! Contact Us! We try out something new as some of friends share their stories of a Brush with Greatness! In today's world of pre-planned, prepaid meet and greets, it's hard to find very many memorable stories of encounters with artists. This new series endeavors to talk to friends of ours that had genuine encounters (good and bad) with the artists. Joining us first today is voiceover artist and radio deejay Jeff Cecil. Jeff goes way back with Aaron Camaro to his radio days in the 90's. In this talk, Jeff and Aaron reflect on the old days and talk about run-ins with William Duvall of Alice in Chains, Ivan Moody of Five Finger Death Punch, and David Lee Roth among others. Up next is drummer Richie Rivera. Richie is a veteran gun-f0r-hire who also plays for Janet Gardner (formerly of Vixen). Richie truly brought it this week with a truly entertaining story about a meeting with Rick James. It must be heard to be believed! Rounding out today's show is music industry member and publicist Dave Tedder. Today, Dave shares a story going back to the 80's that involves a chance meeting with Dokken in Germany and how it relates to their video for 'In My Dreams.' Pretty interesting stuff! *Note* - If you think YOU have a great story that could be shared of your Brush with Greatness, be sure to leave the name of the artist involved in the comments section! This week we're back with the third installment of Camaro's Cutout Bin! What is Camaro's Cutout Bin? Our host-with-the-most, Aaron Camaro, has a penchant for digging for musical gold in the form of CD's. He regularly combs through record stores, thrift stores, yard sales, etc for great rock and metal. He sometimes finds great stuff from classic bands but often finds relatively obscure bands of which many may have missed the boat. The band name, album name, or cover may speak to him as something that potentially "rocks." What are the results? Listen this week and find out if these ten selected albums made the cut! In this edition of the cutout bin, you'll hear tracks from Electric Frankenstein, Penicillin, Two-Bit Thief, Jesse's Powertrip, The Power Trio from Hell, The Camaros, Jet Circus, Ambush, and Radiovipers. Aaron and Chris go over the bands, their stories, and check out some of the music. Does it rock? Did it make Aaron's playlist? You'll have to listen to find out! Searches for high-dollar items include artists such as KISS, Alice Cooper, Metallica, Thin Lizzy, Ramones, Faster Pussycat, Danzig, Black Sabbath, and Motley Crue. You won't believe some of the prices that are being asked! We welcome back Bakko from the Cobras and Fire podcast to join us as we list our KISS Top 10 Bottom 10! In addition to his hosting duties, Bakko has been a longtime writer for the Decibel Geek website. Recently, he put out an article ranking every song in the KISS catalog; not an easy feat! As with most lists, it's reflective of the writer's personal take and we had our share of differences with his list. So, we figured the best way to rectify the situation was to bring him on and give our Top 10 and Bottom 10 KISS songs while going over his list as well. Would we agree? Would there be verbal bashing? Honestly, due to the amount of beer consumed in this episode, we don't really remember! Additionally, Bakko takes on Chris in a rematch of Beat the Geek hosted by Aaron Camaro! Did Chris get embarrassed? Did Bakko get crowned? As said previously, we don't remember so join us and find out! We hope you enjoy KISS Top 10 Bottom 10 and SHARE with a friend! Former KISS guitar tech Barry Ackom joins us this week to share some incredible KISS Road Stories! Hired on to work for the band during the Alive! tour, Barry would pull double duty doing guitar tech work for both Paul Stanley and Ace Frehley. His tenure with The Hottest Band in the Land lasted through Alive II around 1978. Barry had a front row seat to the fast ascent of KISS and was a part of numerous landmark moments in the band's zenith. We barely scratched the surface in this entertaining chat but touch on topics such as the sold out 3 night run at Cobo Hall in 1976, the Anaheim Stadium show, the making of Destroyer, and KISS Meets the Phantom of the Park! Other subjects covered include a hilarious story of a barefoot Ace Frehley in Sweden, Ace getting shocked in Lakeland, Florida, and the subsequent use of wireless gear. Also, Barry shares how his Chicago-area band Lois Lane was almost a farm club for KISS replacement members. It's an hour-plus of great stories told by a man that witnessed the magic of KISS first-hand. We hope you enjoy Road Stories with Barry Ackom and SHARE with a friend Merry KISSmas in July! We're back this week to focus on all the news in the rock and metal world with New Noize 9! There's a lot of bleak news outside of the music world these days so we hope to provide a brief escape from it all in this episode. Starting things off, we give our in-depth review of the latest Ozzy Osbourne offering 'Ordinary Man'. Did we love it? Did we hate it? Do we disagree with each other? You'll have to listen to find out. Additionally, we discuss some of the latest developments between the Donnie Vie and Enuff Z'nuff camps. A lot has been put forth publicly by the former singer of our favorite pop rock band and we have our thoughts on the whol situation. Other topics discussed include Twisted Sister becoming licensing kings, updates on the Mick Mars solo album, Riot's singer trying out on The Voice (yes, we're serious), and a Nu-Metal tour that nobody asked for. Finally, we dig into some recent comments from Robb Flynn of Machine Head that didn't sit too well with Aaron Camaro. You'll hear Robb's comments and Aaron's response in this episode. We're blessed to be joined by Tommy Skeoch this week as he reflects on the Tesla classic 'Psychotic Supper.' Coming on the heels of the successful 'Five Man Acoustical Jam' album, Tesla hit the studio in New York playing with house money. The recent success afforded them free reign to create an album devoid of record company pressure. The band went to work with producers Steve Thompson and Michael Barbiero. The resulting album is a sonic platter of greatness. Psychotic Supper sounds as fresh today as it did in 1991. Boasting five successful singles including What You Give, Edison's Medicine, Song and Emotion, and Call It What You Want, Psychotic Supper achieved platinum status. In this long-form discussion, Tommy Skeoch shares his memories of the making of this great album. Track by track, story by story; you'll get it all. We also get the inside track on Tommy's new band Resist and Bite. Putting the finishing touches on material, the band will soon be shopping for a label. In the meantime, we're giving you a sneak peak with podcast world premier of the song The Myth I'm Livin.' I spent some time last week working within the High Ticket Courses group. They were asking a lot of questions on the sales process and how to boost their conversion rates. The advice that I gave them is really beneficial for any industry or product. --> I focus on the application form. Pre-framing before they get on the sales call. Do not copy and paste from someone else - create what is UNIQUE to you. You MUST re-create your own assessment form or application form. It MUST speak to your mechanism. You want to connect with them on the form, you want to review their forms. No lead is hotter than the lead who just clicked SUBMIT on their application form. If you ask BETTER QUESTIONS, you will get BETTER LEADS. Focus on a few key things: Promise / Offer Unique mechanism WHY? What to specifically include... Additionally... Step #1: Get the prospects to sell themselves by repeating your unique mechanism. And if they are not doing this, then they are saying that they did not like your presentation or connect with you because of xyz. You know that you need to go back and edit. But when they are repeating your mechanisms then BOOM you know you got a winner. Step #2: Repeat your promise throughout your ENTIRE presentation and sales process. This is how you get your prospects to sell themselves and increase the quality of your leads. ----------------------------------------------------------------- If you like what you heard today, check out our recent podcasts on iTunes and comment! Everyone wants to: Reduce no show rates, Get better prospects, How to insure sales team effectiveness. New Goal: Eliminate the sales conversations. Today may be a bit controversial and I do not want it to be taken the wrong way. A big choke-point can be the sales conversations and the sales process. I speak with a client about this and share the results with you... Create a new and unique assessment form Assessment: assessing that they are the right client BIG ADVICE: re-frame everything that you are doing as "how is this going to benefit my customer?" "What can you do for the customer...?" Ask better questions framed around core promise Examples Remind prospects of what they are getting from this program Sales first -> marketing second You ask vague questions, you will get vague answers and unqualified prospects! I do not believe that we really need to follow a "sales script" --> This will increase your close rate with enrollment conversations. In a completely new experimental series we read and react to a Hit Parader magazine from back in the day with Rock Mag '83! Reaction videos seem to be a big trend these days but, in this case, we're reacting to the printed word. The Rock Mag series has us flipping through the pages of an old school rock magazine and reacting to it. Did these articles age well? Do we agree with the takes given? Are these letters to the editor actually legit? We go through it all, crack wise, and share our opinions of their opinions! Rock Mag '83 Topics from this issue of Hit Parader from 1983 include Eddie Van Halen, KISS, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Charles Atlas, Button Making, B-Movies, Fake Letters, Ridiculous Rush Takes, and much more! "...Now you have them thinking in terms of a new process - 'what is this guy's secret sauce'? This is how you position yourself as a high ticket program or course for a difficult niche to sell to... All about turning the intangible into the tangle and speaking in terms of aspirational viewpoints. That is what will make a difference." - Joel Today I have spent some time speaking with our high ticket courses clients. I spoke with some clients who have a difficult niche like personal development, etc. They are concerned that they will not make it because they do not have a "get rich" program. They are INCORRECT! It's about your power offer. Position yourself as a high ticket course. When we are in the world of direct response marketing, we need to make the intangible tangible. How can we create this? ex: Helping someone get through grief... Helping someone with divorce, etc. In this episode I will go through one of my calls with a current high ticket courses buyer. Investing mindset: those who can see the longterm potential and put in the effort to see what they can become. Not the "I need a magic pill now" people, those who understand and want the real long term solution. Marketing: "I want to help you to become..." versus a quick band-aid. How? I share a sample ad. "Your message attracts and repels people" -Joel A peek inside what we have been working on and how things are working for us... Behind the Scenes: I am a huge advocate for messaging; the right messaging for the right buyers. So how can we test while spending less. Our ads have hit a stagnant point, a scaling block. I think we have hit our threshold with the message and the audience. So we need to change our audience and change our message to appeal to this audience. We are currently in testing mode. Conversion rate optimization is what we are really learning. Scroll rates, where are they dropping off, etc. So what's on the horizon: Nobody is really teaching rate optimization from ad to funnel; I want to change this; I am working on how to optimize every step on the customer journey from click to close. My new GOAL: how can we measure, optimize and monitor every step. Through our testing, my cost per link clicks has gotten as low as 20 cents! So I will be continuing our testing and will fill you in as we move forward... Exciting things ahead, I promise! If you want to get involved in my tribe and learn more about what we are doing firsthand, please check out our high ticket courses program here: https://htcwebinar.joelerway.com/register Cheers to your success! This week Toby Wright joins us for an in-depth discussion on the making of the Alice in Chains classic 'Jar of Flies.' Released on January 25, 1994, through Columbia Records, it is the first EP in music history to debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, with the first week sales exceeding 141,000 copies in the United States. Recorded over the course of a week at the London Bridge Studio in Seattle, it was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 1995; Best Recording Package and Best Hard Rock Performance for "I Stay Away". It has been certified triple-platinum by the RIAA, selling 4 million copies worldwide. Jar of Flies In this long-form talk, Toby recounts his memories of getting the phone call from Jerry Cantrell to book studio time once the band got off tour. Assuring Toby that plenty of material was ready to go, Cantrell revealed later that no material had been written as of day 1 of recording. What happened next can only be described as catching lightning in a bottle (or a jar). Wright and the members of the band hunkered down for 14+ hour days and churned out 7 amazing songs in 7 days. With a 10 day window for mixing, Jar of Flies took form from conception to finished product in just 20 days. Additionally, Toby shares his memories of the creation of the songs as well as production techniques used for creating the timeless sound of Jar of Flies. Also, Toby and his partner Jay give the details of their company, Taummhoms. Taummhoms is a subscription based sleep sound streaming service that can be accessed from any internet connected device. It features unique, on- demand, HIGH DEFINITION sounds that can help you in promoting sleep and revitalization.
