AUDIO TRANSCRIPT And before we dig into God's Word together, let's just pause.I'm going to ask you just take a moment and please pray for me to be faithful,to clearly communicate God's Word. And I will pray for you to have your heart open to receive what it isthat the Lord wants to teach us today. Let's pray.Father in heaven, your Word challenges us and convicts us and we thank you for that.We didn't come in here today looking for a stamp of affirmation on how we already are. We've come in here to encounter you and allow your spirit and your Word to conform us into the image of your Son.That's why we're here.So Father, I pray to that end you would open our hearts.Your spirit would speak to every heart, the wisdom that you have recorded in your Word. That we walk out of here different people than how we were when we walked in.Thank you Father for the promise of your Word.We pray in Jesus' name. And all of God's people said, "Amen."I have a nonverbal Son, as many of you know. But years ago, I was with a group of pastors and one pastor was commenting on the fact that I had a nonverbal Son.And he said, very compassionately, he said,"It must be very difficult for you to not have a conversation with your Son."And I said, "It is."But the way I look at it, we'll have all of eternity to catch up.And a different pastor said, if he's elect, and I said, "I feel like you're predestined to take a weapon."And I was a prophet that day.Okay, I made that last part up.But I still think about that.I still think about retaliation.Getting even. Why are we like that? Why are we like that people, that there's something in all of us that makes us demand respect?Hey, you can't talk to me that way.You know I am?You can't treat me like that. There's something in us that we demand our rights. We say things like, "I don't get mad. I get even."And you're not going to get away with this. You're going to pay for what you did.Our hearts are naturally, sinfully retaliatory.I was listening to a sermon about a month or so ago from one of my favorite preachers, Ron Don.It was a sermon on meekness. And he reminded me of something that I loved when I was a kid.He was a little comic book.Do you remember the Charles Atlas ads in the old comic books?Do you remember those? It was a little one page, it was a little comic strip in the book.Well, in this little comic strip, there was this little weakling, like a little skinny guy,on the beach and this bully was like kicking sand in his face. And all the girls were like, "Tee hee hee hee."And the kid takes Charles Atlas course. The skinny kid.And in 90 days, he was kicking sand in the other guy's face. And there's something innocent. We're like, "Yes! Yeah!"We love that stuff, don't we?Don't we love that revenge stuff?Oh, come on.Don't you leave me up here.Don't we love that revenge stuff? The getting even stuff?Yes, you do.Yes, you do.There are many of the plot lines of movies.Like, and your soap operas and your westerns and your superhero movies.I was thinking about this this week. It's everywhere. That's what Popeye is.Popeye is nothing but a cartoon about a guy that gets even.We love that stuff. We love the guy that is not going to take it.Payback.Because the guy that gets the sand kicked in his faceand belittled and humiliated and he just takes it.Well, that guy is a coward, right?Weak. It's like, dude, punch that bully in the trot.Don't take it.Right? There's biblical precedence for this, isn't there? An eye for an eye.Right? An eye for an eye.Oh, I like that.Because that's in the Bible. You know what that is?Eye for an eye. That is biblical permission to get even. No, no, no, no, no. I'm sorry. That's a biblical command to get even, isn't it?Well, the scribes and the Pharisees thought so.And many people sitting here even and watching thisand listening to this podcast later, still believethat an eye for an eye is our biblical mandates to get revenge.Well, let's see, shall we?Look at verse 30.Why don't we say verse 38? Yes.Jesus continuing the Sermon on the Mount. He said, "You have heard that it was said,an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth."Yeah, that's a real Old Testament quote.Yes.100%.And it's also one of the most misinterpretedand misused verses in the entire Bible.Because the scribes and the Phariseesand we take this verse way out of context. Is an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth? Is that our charge to get even? No, it's not.All right, then what does it mean?I'm so glad you asked.Let's get biblical, shall we?Mark and I shows up three times in the Old Testament.Three times. It's in Exodus 21, it's in Leviticus 24,and it's in Deuteronomy 19.Don't look now, but you look later, and you're going to see in every one of those passages, every single one of them, the context of that verse areit's God's instructions for Israel's courts and judges.Eye for an eye, that was for Israel's courts, not for personal vendetta. And eye for an eye was a guideline for Israel's judges, not for Batman, okay?So what's the purpose?Eye for an eye. What does eye for an eye mean?Eye for an eye, tooth for a tooth. What does that mean?It just simply means this. The punishment should fit the crime. In court, justice demands being fair.So judges in court, God's instruction for Israel, when you punish someone, the measure of punishment should fit the measure of the crime. That's what eye for an eye means. And God is saying an eye for an eyemust be determined by the courts. The courts determine that. Why?Why did God leave that up to the courts? Why? I'll tell you why.Because when we're wronged,we, by nature, want to retaliateway beyond the level of the offense. Here's what I mean. Our mindset is this. You dinged my 93 Toyota. You owe me a new car.Fair is fair.We take it way too far.We say things like,"Hey, we were messing around. We were playing basketballand you accidentally elbowed me in the mouthand broke my tooth. You owe me a set of grills."Justin, do the kids still wear grills?Do they still wear a thing? The cool ones. You are right. You could not be righter. But that's the point. We take it too far.You owe me way more thanyou should have to pay.So God's like, "No, no, no, no.Leave that to the courts."So here it is. Here it is.If a crime has been committed against me,if I've been wronged in any way,I'm not going to take the law into my own hands.I'm going to take the courts to be fairin the way God commanded the courts to be fair, which is an eye for an eye.A tooth for a tooth.Be fair.So in Jesus' day, the ascribes and the Pharisees, and again us, we take this way out of contextand we take it out of the courtsand we take it as our command, our personal responsibility to get even. But look at verse 39.You probably saw this coming.Jesus says, "But I say to you,do not resist the one who is evil."Do not resist. What does that mean?It literally means this. When someone wrongs you, when someone offends you, when someone is against you,Jesus says, "Do not set yourself against him."Now let's be clear.Jesus is not saying,He is not saying,"Do not protect yourself.Do not protect your own."He's not saying that.If you break into my home,my dog will shoot youand my wife will bite you.Wait.No, no, that's right. He's not saying, "Don't protect yourself."He's not saying, "Don't protect your church."Jesus isn't preaching passivity here.Like, "Okay, go ahead.Go ahead. You can sin,and you can abuse me all you want.I don't care because Jesus said not to resist."That's not what He's saying. He's also not saying,"Don't confront sin."He's not saying that.Because the Bible is clear that sin must be confronted. It must be addressed and dealt with in the church. Here's what Jesus is sayingby this statement. And it's going to be crystal clearbecause Jesus actually illustrateswhat He's teaching here. But here's what Jesus is saying. He's saying,"Don't start a feud.Don't try to get even.Don't try to get even.If you think that your rights were violated, you don't need to fight about it."That's what Jesus is saying. We are not to be a peoplewhose knee-jerk reactionis to be retaliatory. That's what Jesus is saying. In the Sermon on the Mount,we've seen it over and over.Jesus is saying, "My people are different."My people are different in how they act. They're merciful. They're hungry for righteousness. They're salt and light. They're influencers. They reconcile with broken relationships. They cut off lust and they take marriage seriously. And they keep their word.My people act differently.Because when Jesus Christ enters us,when you receive Christ, when you turn from your sin and believethat He died for your sinand He rose from the dead to give you eternal life, when you believe that the Bible saysGod's Holy Spirit lives within you.And when God's Spirit lives within you,you are called to something greater. And you demonstrate that you belong to Christby how you act.God wants your heart. And your heart is revealed by how you act.But perhaps more so,your heart is revealed by how you react. You can show me what a man is made ofby how he acts. And I can show you what a man is made ofby how he reacts. So let me ask you,how do you react? How do you react when you have been personally offended? How do you react when you've been insulted? How do you react when you've been disrespected?Do you react in kind?As your mind said immediately,"No, no, no, no, no, no, no.You're not getting away with this.I'm getting even."As your mind said,"An eye for an eye."Wrongly interpreting it like the Pharisees.Or do you not resist? As our Lord said,do you refuse to emotionally reactand retaliate in the flesh? And I'm sure there's somebody here,self-deluded, that's like,"Oh, my pastor's got to hang it along with everybody."I never respond negatively when I'm offended.I just bake them muffins.Okay.But I think there's something here for the rest of us.Because Jesus elaborateson how His followers should reactto difficult peopleand difficult situationsby giving four scenarios. So that's what we're going to ask ourselves today,a little self-examination.We're going to ask ourselves, "How do you react?"How do you react?Number one, how do you reactwhen you are insulted? When you are insulted, how do you react?Eye for an eye?Or do you refuse retaliation?Look at verse 39.Jesus says, "But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also."Stop there. To the Jews, this was the absolute most insulting thingto be slapped. In fact, I read this past week that a slave in those days,a slave would rather be whipped than slappedbecause a slap was utterly humiliating. And you know the worst was the backhand slap. That's why Jesus said, "Right cheek?"Sorry about that. That's why Jesus said, "Right cheek?"Because when you get a backhand with a right hand,it's going to hit you in the right cheek. That was the worst insult in their mind.We get it.Nothing's really changed there. We get it.If somebody walks up to you and just...That's just total disdain. It's like you're nothing to me.You're not even worth arguing withbecause you're nothing. It's just a complete, complete insult. And all the moment I'm insulted,I want to retaliate.Eye for an eye, right?Oh, okay, now I get to slap you.And I bet I can slap harder.Wait, wait, wait, wait. What does Jesus say?He says, "Turn to Him the other also."You're like, "Aha, okay. That's very gracious."He gets two slaps in on me and then it's go time.No.If you're believing that, then you completely missed the point that Jesus was making.Because here's the thing. It's not even about the slap. It's about being insulted. That's the point. How do you respond when you're insulted?Because look, unless you're Chris Rocket and Smacked by Will Smith, you're probably not going to get a slap. You probably are not.But you're going to be insulted in other ways, aren't you?Verbally. How about social media? All these keyboard warriors out there?Because they know they won't get slapped in the teeth. They're real strong and brave throwing out their insults at youfrom behind their keyboard.Maybe that nasty text or email that you get, you're going to be insulted. It's all the same application here from our Lord.At the same point, Jesus says, "Turn to Him the other."He's saying, "You're insulted?Have you been grossly insulted?"Jesus says, "Let Him do it again."You.You refuse to retaliate.Like, "I shouldn't be insulted.Don't you know who I am?I should be respected."Yeah.I agree. You should be respected. But you won't be.Someone is going to insult you.So you can react the world's way."I" for an "I"?Like, "Oh, you're going to insult me?I'm going to go full-dawn wrinkles on you."You have brought a knife to a gunfight, my friend. That's "I" for an "I."Or you could respond the kingdom way, which is refusing to retaliate. And right now, somebody's sitting there going,"Oh, okay.So you're saying, when people insult me,I should just take it?"Now you're thinking like Jesus.Because 1 Peter 2, 23, he says, when He was reviled,He did not revile in return. When He suffered, He did not threaten, but continued in trusting Himself to Him,who judges justly. How do you react when you're insulted?Number two, how do you react when people are heartless? How do you react when people are heartlessand "I" for an "I"?Or gratuitous grace?Look at verse 40.Jesus said, "And if anyone would sue youand take your tunic, let them have your cloak as well."Okay, Jesus isn't saying,"Everybody consume me for everything."Now, He's obviously,He's talking about being suedwhere there is some justification in the lawsuit. That you went to court and legally, you were sued and lost your tunic.Like, what's a tunic?Well, in those days, the tunic was the long undergarment. It was like a long, basically, the shirt. It was your shirt. And look, they didn't have a closet full of themwith a bag of them for the good will sitting in the garage. Most of them would have had one or three at the most. And this was more than just your shirt. It was also your blanket. That's the thing that kept you warm at night. So I think this is quite a shocking thingfor our Lord to say that someonewould sue you for the shirt off your back. And look, in court,if someone sues you for the shirtthat's on your back that you're wearing, that's a little more than I for an I, isn't it?That's pretty heartless. The reality is, people do sue heartlessly. It's like suing a Christian school.Like, why would you do that?Unless there was a real egregious crime going on.But a lot of times, it's just spite. And I believe that's what Jesus is saying here.Perhaps Jesus was being hyperbolic, like saying even if somebody sues youfor the shirt that you're wearing.Well, you could react the world's way, couldn't you?Like, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.I'm not giving you the shirt that I'm wearing. That's unreasonable and it's unfair. And I will fight you all the way up to the Supreme Courtover my shirt.Or you could react the kingdom way, which is, did you lose your shirt in a lawsuit?Well, show them you're really sorry for whatever the offense was.And give them your coat too.You know, it's an interesting way that Jesus worded thisbecause in Jewish Old Testament law,you were not allowed to sue a man for his coat. That was illegal.Do you think Jesus is making a point?Hey, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.Okay, so you're saying it was illegal to sue a man for his coat.So if somebody sues you for your shirtand you give them your coat, that would be awfully gratuitous. Now you're thinking like Jesus.Romans 12-21 says, "Do not be overcome by evil."But overcome evil with good.Don't retaliate.Show them that you're willing to give even more than they asked for.So how do you react? How do you react?Number three, when forced to obey.Eye for an eye or double your duty?Look at verse 41.Jesus, next illustration. He says, "And if anyone forces you to go one mile,go with them two miles."Now the Romans had a law.And that was actually a variation of an old Persian postal law.But here is the Roman law.An official could on the spot recruit a citizenfor official duty to perform a task. You know the most famous example of this? This commissioning Simon of Cyrene to carry our Lord's cross. That was law.Specifically here, what Jesus is referring to was legally, legally a Roman soldier could recruit a citizento carry his pack, his gear, one mile, and no further. You think about it from a Jewish standpoint, that's, hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm.You mean my enemy, a Roman soldier,is going to make me carry his stuff for a mile?So Jew, that would have been very degrading and disgusting.I think here our Lord is speaking to man's natural resentmenttowards the demands of the government.Does anybody remember COVID?Well, you can react the world's way.Right? You can react the world's way.You can act the way you want. You can act the way you want. You can act the way you want. You can act the way you want. You can act the way you want. You can act the way you want. You can act the way you want. You can act the way you want. You can act the way you want. You can act the way you want. You can act the way you want. You can act the way you want. You can act the way you want. You can act the way you want. The entire way.Give me your stuff.Baby shark doo doo doo doo doo doo.Baby shark doo doo doo doo doo doo doo.Never mind, I'll carry it myself. That's the world's way.Or you can react the kingdom's way. What's according to our Lord is what?Go two miles.Did you carry his stuff for a mile and you're like,"You know what? I'm just getting limber.I'm just getting warmed up.I'll go another mile."It's like giving the cloak, right?Same principle.Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait.So you're saying,"I should give more than the law demands.I should give double of what's required of me."Now you're thinking like Jesus.Because 1 Peter 2.16 says,"Citizens, live as people who are free. Not using your freedom as a cover up for evil. But living as servants of God."Don't just do what's demanded.Go beyond.Force them to ask,"Why in the world is she acting like that?"And then you have the opportunity to talk about grace.Number four. How do you react when someone wants your stuff? How do you react when someone wants your stuff?Eye for an eye?Or do you release your resources?Look at verse 42.Jesus says, "Give to the one who begs from youand do not refuse the one who would borrow from you."Oh, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.It just got real, didn't it?My money? My possessions?Bless you.We get so...We get so possessiveover things.Jesus is saying if somebody begs,if somebody wants to borrow,He's not talking about beggars along the side of the road. This implies a real need,a need that's known and a need that's verified. That's what Jesus is talking about. And again, we have the two options before us.We can react the world's way.Someone comes to you with a real need.Eye for an eye means...All right, look, look, look.I'm going to give this to you, but you owe me, okay? And you're... Listen, you're going to pay me backevery cent that I'm giving you.Do you understand me?I want it in writing. That's the world's way.And when we have that attitude,it just demonstrates that we care more about things than people, right?Well, why are you entitled to my stuff?Go get your own stuff.Where you can react the kingdom way.Jesus, what's the kingdom way?He says give the one who begs and do not refuse. The one who would borrow. What's the kingdom way?Self-sacrificing generosity. He's like, "Oh, you need something that I have? You know what? Here, take it.You know what? I'll buy another one,or I'll learn to live without it.No begs, whatever. Go ahead.Looks like you need this more than I do.If God thinks I need it,He'll make sure I get another one, all right? That's the kingdom way.Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.So I should just give away everything that I have? Now you're thinking like Jesus.First John 3 verse 17 says,"But if anyone has the world's goods,Jesus' brother, Anid, yet closes his heart against him.How does the love of God abide in him?"It's just stuff. It's just stuff. It's eventual garbage, right?Release your resources. Bless people with it.Look, in Jesus' four scenarios here,in every case, your heart is revealed. Not in how you act,but in how you react. And you're like, "Man, man, how can I live like that?"Right now, I guarantee you, every single person here is looking at us going,"I agree that this is right!"But I don't know if I can actually do it.I mean, to do this,I would have to not insist on my rights.I would have to deny myselfand I would have to act like a slave. Now you're thinking like Jesus.Because, oh, by the way,not insisting on your rights and denying yourselfand acting like a slave.Philippians 2.Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who though he was in the form of God,did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped. He didn't insist on his rights. But emptied himself.Denied himself by taking the form of a servant. He became a slave. When you leave here today, someone's going to offend you.Someone's going to insult you.And somebody's going to stomp all over your rights. What you need to do right nowis decide how you're going to react.Let's pray. Our Father in Heaven,we thank You for Your Word, because this is contrary to how we think. There's something in our heartsthat demands retaliation. That would say getting even is the way to go.We teach our kids that. When Your Son very clearly taught usthat we're to be a peoplethat act opposite the way the world acts.Father, I pray right now thatdecisions are being madeas we sit in the fellowship of the congregation,as we sit under Your Word,as we're sitting in a setting of worship.I pray right now, Father, that we are making decisionswhen we walk out this door.We are not going to be people who retaliate. But instead,we're going to follow the examplethat Your Son gave us,and we're going to trust in the power of Your Spirit, whom You put within us.To Your glory and honor, Father, grab our hearts and minds. We pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

Si aún no conoces a Cristo, búscale hoy mismo radiomoody.org/conoce-a-cristo. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Timeless Health & Wellness Strategies From "The World's Most Perfectly Developed Man," Charles Atlas

Some of the best health strategies are the most simple and basic; unfortunately, it's the simplicity that makes them easy to quickly overlook and undervalue. As much as I love reading the newest books and most up-to-date research to stay on the leading edge of wellness and longevity, I also believe that some of the most treasured information can be obtained from hidden gems from times of yore. Even some of the most prolific research on how light impacts our health originates from the 40s, 50s and 60s, thanks to John Ott (remember those solosodes, long-time listeners?!). Not to mention, some of the most reliable health and medical strategies were produced from our ancestors thousands of years ago via Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic Medicine, to name a couple. The best techniques and approaches inevitably stand the test of time.Enter Charles Atlas, "The World's Most Perfectly Developed Man," who was a veritable biohacker way back in the early 1900s — multiple generations before the term came into use. And don't worry, this episode isn't about bodybuilding or necessarily about perfecting our physique. Rather, Charles Atlas created a program in the 1920s - 1940s that consists of a dozen separate lessons where each lesson goes over various health and wellness strategies; ranging from the mental, to the physical, to diet, to the importance of "building magnetism" and much more. In today's episode, I want to go over those approaches that I felt would be interesting and relevant to you all.Charles Atlas (born Angelo Siciliano; October 30, 1892 – December 24, 1972) was an Italian-American bodybuilder, entrepreneur, and fitness pioneer. He is best known for his mail-order fitness program and for being dubbed “The World's Most Perfectly Developed Man.”  Atlas claimed he was inspired to change his body after seeing statues of Greek and Roman gods at the Brooklyn Museum.  His fitness philosophy emphasized health, strength, and self-confidence. Atlas is considered a pioneer in promoting fitness to the general public and is often credited with sparking the modern fitness culture. He was an advocate for a healthy diet and a clean lifestyle. Annemieke Bosman spreekt met Manique Hendricks en Maaike Rikhof, conservatoren van de tentoonstelling The Art of Drag in het Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem. Drag is overal.

The history of bodybuilding is a captivating journey that intertwines with the evolution of physical fitness, cultural perceptions of the human body, and the pursuit of perfection. From ancient civilizations to modern-day competitions, bodybuilding has undergone significant transformations, shaping and being shaped by society's ideals and values. The origins of bodybuilding can be traced back to ancient Greece, where athletes trained to achieve physical prowess for competitive events like the Olympic Games. Sculpted statues and artworks from this era depict muscular physiques, highlighting the admiration for the human form. However, it wasn't until the late 19th century that bodybuilding as a structured discipline began to emerge. Eugen Sandow, often referred to as the "Father of Modern Bodybuilding," rose to prominence in the late 1800s with his impressive physique and groundbreaking performances. Sandow's exhibitions showcased his sculpted muscles and athleticism, captivating audiences worldwide and popularizing the concept of physical culture. He emphasized the importance of strength, symmetry, and aesthetics, laying the foundation for modern bodybuilding. In the early 20th century, the golden age of bodybuilding dawned with the advent of organized competitions and the rise of iconic figures like Charles Atlas and John Grimek. These pioneers inspired countless individuals to pursue bodybuilding as a means of self-improvement and personal expression. However, it wasn't until the mid-20th century that bodybuilding truly exploded onto the mainstream scene. The emergence of Muscle Beach in California during the 1940s and 1950s provided a platform for bodybuilders to showcase their talents in outdoor gyms along the sunny shores of Venice Beach. This vibrant community of fitness enthusiasts, including legends like Steve Reeves and Reg Park, attracted attention from the media and sparked a cultural phenomenon. The 1960s witnessed the rise of the International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB), founded by bodybuilding icon Joe Weider. The IFBB established standardized rules and regulations for competitions, paving the way for the sport's global expansion. During this era, Arnold Schwarzenegger emerged as a dominant force, captivating audiences with his imposing physique and charismatic persona. Schwarzenegger's reign during the 1970s solidified bodybuilding's place in popular culture, inspiring millions to hit the gym and sculpt their bodies. Throughout the late 20th and early 21st centuries, bodybuilding continued to evolve, with athletes pushing the boundaries of muscular development and conditioning. The introduction of new training techniques, nutritional strategies, and supplementation further fueled the sport's growth. Additionally, the emergence of women's bodybuilding and other divisions, such as physique and bikini, diversified the competitive landscape, attracting a more diverse array of athletes. Today, bodybuilding remains a global phenomenon, with competitions held in countries around the world and a dedicated community of enthusiasts spanning all ages and backgrounds. While the sport continues to face scrutiny and stereotypes, its enduring appeal lies in its ability to empower individuals to transform their bodies and minds through discipline, dedication, and hard work. As bodybuilding enters a new era, its rich history serves as a testament to the enduring pursuit of physical excellence and the relentless drive to push the limits of human potential.

Today in the Word Devotional

Ads and commercials for diet supplements and exercise equipment sometimes include “before” and “after” pictures of those who use the product. A famous ad from the 1920s for the training regimen developed by bodybuilder Charles Atlas boasted that it had enabled him to go from being a 97-pound weakling to “the world’s most perfectly developed person.” Paul paints an even more striking before-and-after picture of his readers in Ephesians 2:1–13. The “before” describes sinners as spiritually dead, but that does not mean they aren’t active. They follow “the ruler of the kingdom of the air” (v. 2). This is Satan, who led humanity into sin. Satan is not a metaphor but an evil spiritual being with other evil spirits who serve him. Satan is a fallen angel (Luke 10:18). He was the first to tempt humanity, but he is not the only source of temptation we face. Because Adam sinned, we are both guilty of and inclined to sin. Everyone who is tempted is “dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed” (James 1:14). This sin problem affects “all of us” because we are sinners “by nature” who are “deserving of wrath” (v. 3). Yet Paul’s main point is not the sin of his readers but the radical change outlined in verses 4–6. This change was not brought about by personal willpower or a training regimen of spiritual exercises, but by God who was motivated by love and mercy. We are changed from spiritual death to life in Christ (v. 5). The fact that those who experienced this change were dead in sin makes it clear that the change did not come through their own efforts but had its origin in the grace of God. This is God’s handiwork. >> God’s gracious work produced a new community that joined Gentiles and Jewish believers in Christ. Both are united by “the blood of Christ” to form the new community we know as the church.

Guy has already proven that plant-based is winning: He's already contributed to earning 2 Superbowl rings for the Pats and fans have high hopes for a third this season (despite the drama that led to Vegan Cam Newton getting released). One thing we know for sure is that Guy's diet has set him up to be a key player for New England.Americans have long been obsessed with building bigger muscles, and ever since Charles Atlas won back-to-back bodybuilding competitions in the early 1920s in New York City, the goal has been to build mountains of muscles to appear stronger, leaner, and present a masculine ideal that resembles early Arnold Schwarzenegger, before the acting career.Perhaps it's no surprise that steroid use has been on the uptick in recent years among younger and younger athletes, especially high school competitors. The dangers of steroids are well known and anabolic steroids have been banned from international competition to protect athletes from a plethora of potentially harmful side effects that range from the mental, such as irritability and paranoia, to the physical, including kidney and liver damage, the risk of an enlarged heart, incidents of heart attack, stroke, plus hair loss, impotence and more.Buzzsprout - Let's get your podcast launched! Joey Gabe and  CJ talk..   Creepshow is a 1982 American horror comedy anthology film directed by George A. Romero and written by Stephen King, making this film his screenwriting debut. The film's ensemble cast includes Hal Holbrook, Adrienne Barbeau, Fritz Weaver, Leslie Nielsen, Carrie Nye, E. G. Marshall, and Viveca Lindfors as well as King himself (King's acting debut actually came a year prior in the Romero film Knightriders). The film was primarily shot on location in Pittsburgh and its suburbs, including Monroeville, where Romero leased an old boys academy (Penn Hall) to build extensive sets for the film.   Prologue A young boy named Billy Hopkins[a] (Joe Hill) gets disciplined by his abusive father Stan (Tom Atkins) for reading a horror comic titled Creepshow. After swiping the comic from Billy and throwing it in the garbage, Stan tells his wife (Iva Jean Saraceni) that he has to be hard on Billy because he does not want their son to read it, calling it "horror crap". As Billy sits upstairs, wishing that his father rots in Hell, he hears a sound at the window. The source of the noise turns out to be the Creep, the host of the comic book, beckoning him to come closer. The film transitions to animation as the Creep removes the lid from the trash can, transitioning to the first story. "Father's Day" The first story, "Father's Day," is an original story by King written for the film. Sylvia Grantham (Carrie Nye) gathers with her nephew Richard (Warner Shook), niece Cass (Elizabeth Regan), and Cass's new husband Hank (Ed Harris) at their estate for their annual dinner on the third Sunday in June. They proceed to tell Hank about the current family matriarch, Great Aunt Bedelia (Viveca Lindfors) and about her father, the former patriarch, the miserly and domineering Nathan Grantham (Jon Lormer), who accumulated the family's fortune through bootlegging, fraud, extortion and murder-for-hire. Seven years earlier, Bedelia was rendered an unstable spinster as the result of a lifetime spent putting up with her father's incessant demands and emotional abuse, which only got worse after he suffered a stroke and she was made to nurse him full time. The abuse culminated in his orchestrating the murder of her sweetheart Peter Yarbro (Peter Messer) to keep her under his thumb. That Father's Day, Bedelia, having been driven into a murderous rage by his constant demanding for his cake, bludgeons her father to death with a marble ashtray (that is hidden throughout the other stories). In the present, Bedelia arrives at 6 p.m. and stops in the cemetery outside the family house to lay a flower at the grave site. There, she drunkenly reminisces about how she murdered her overbearing father and how Sylvia helped stage it as an accident to steal and distribute his fortune to the rest of the family. After she accidentally spills her whiskey bottle in front of the headstone, Nathan's putrefied, maggot-infested corpse (John Amplas) emerges from the burial plot in the form of a revenant, still demanding the Father's Day cake he never got. Grantham slowly avenges himself on Bedelia, strangling her to death. He moves on to kill the rest of the Granthams, murdering Hank with a falling gravestone, murdering Mrs. Danvers (Nann Mogg) the cook, and twisting Sylvia's neck. As a gruesome final joke, Nathan surprises Cass and Richard by presenting his Father's Day cake, topped with Sylvia's severed head. While the ending is left ambiguous in the film with Nathan gloating over a terrified Cass and Richard in freeze-frame, the comic book based on the film has the Creep giving a vague hint that Nathan's next act was to "blow out their candles". Returning to animation, the Creep turns the comic's page to the next story. "The Lonesome Death of Jordy Verrill" This section of the film is based on King's short story "Weeds". Jordy Verrill (Stephen King), a dimwitted backwoods yokel, watches a meteorite crash land near his farm. Observing the crash site, Jordy gets his fingers burned when he tries to touch the meteorite. In a fantasy sequence, Jordy imagines selling the meteor to the local college's "Department of Meteors", hoping the sale will provide enough money to pay off his $200 bank loan. Taking precautions, he douses it with a bucket of water, causing it to crack open and spill a glowing blue liquid. In another fantasy sequence, Jordy imagines the Department of Meteors refusing to purchase the broken meteorite. Resolving to try and glue the halves together in the morning, Jordy nonchalantly dumps the liquid inside the meteor into the soil, but not before it makes contact with his skin. As time passes, Jordy finds his fingers being overcome by a rapidly spreading plant-like organism. He attempts to call a doctor (Bingo O'Malley), but stops when he imagines (in another fantasy sequence) that the doctor will end up chopping the afflicted fingers off without anesthetic. Over time, the plants continue to grow all over Jordy's farm, everything Jordy has touched, and on Jordy's body, causing him to itch furiously. In a panic, Jordy pours himself a bottle of vodka, mixes it with orange juice, and falls asleep in a drunken stupor. He wakes up sometime later, believing it to have been a dream. But his hopes are dashed when he sees that the plants have managed to grow inside the house and discovering in a mirror that he has now grown a beard of plants. He starts to draw a bath to relieve the itching, but he is visited by the ghost of his deceased father (Bingo O'Malley) who appears in his mirror and warns him against doing so by quoting "You ain't going to get in that tub, are ya? It's the water that it wants, Jordy. Don't you know that? You get in that tub Jordy, you might as well sign your death warrant!" Jordy, grimly rationalizing that not getting in would only delay the inevitable, laments on how "[he's] a goner already." When the itching from the growth on his skin becomes unbearable, Jordy succumbs to temptation and collapses into the bathwater. The next morning, Jordy's farm has been completely covered with dense layers of the alien vegetation, with Jordy himself now transformed into a plant monster. In despair, he reaches for a shotgun, prays to God, and blows the top of his head off, thus killing himself. Immediately afterwards, a TV weather forecast announces that moderate temperatures and heavy rains are predicted, the implication being that this will accelerate the spread of the extraterrestrial plant growth to surrounding areas to the point where the Earth may be terraformed into an entirely green planet. Returning to animation, a gust of wind turns the comic book's page (briefly passing over an advertisement for a voodoo doll that is missing its order form) to the next story. "Something to Tide You Over" This story was also written specifically for the film. Richard Vickers (Leslie Nielsen), a vicious, wealthy, ruthless man whose spry jocularity belies his cold-blooded murderousness, pays a visit to Harry Wentworth (Ted Danson), the man his wife Becky (Gaylen Ross) is having an affair with. Rather than confront him with violence, Richard plays a recording of Becky's voice tearfully begging Harry to help her. Richard and Harry travel to Comfort Point, Richard's private beach house, where Richard points out what appears to be a burial mound in the sand, Harry runs to it, whereupon Richard holds him at gunpoint, telling him to jump into the hole and bury himself. Richard finishes burying Harry up to his neck in the sand below the high-tide line. He also sets up a closed-circuit TV camera, a VCR to record Harry, and a monitor that displays Becky, who is also buried up to her neck further down the beach and already having the tide wash over her face. Richard explains that the two of them have a chance of survival: if they can hold their breath long enough for the sand to loosen once the seawater covers them, they could break free and escape. With that, Richard abandons Harry and returns to Comfort Station where he watches Harry and Becky die in comfort and luxury. Before he is completely submerged by the advancing tide, Harry looks directly into the camera and vows revenge on Richard. Hours later, Richard returns to the spot he buried Harry to collect the tape. He finds the ruined monitor, but no sign of Harry's corpse, though he writes this off as the body being carried away by the current. Later that night, Richard seems to hear voices calling his name as well as observing some unseen force bypassing the many security measures he has in place. The culprits happen to be Harry and Becky, the two lovers returning as a pair of waterlogged, seaweed-covered zombies intent on revenge. Richard tries to shoot them, but the bullets have no effect. Richard attempts to barricade himself in his bedroom, but they manage to appear inside. All the while, the couple taunt Richard with the same words he said to them as Richard laughs with insanity. Richard soon finds himself on the beach, buried up to his neck, facing both the approaching tide and the sight of two sets of footprints disappearing into the surf. With the same seaweed-covered camera he used to record Harry's death recording him, Richard laughs insanely and screams how he can hold his breath "for a long time" as the rising tide begins to wash over him. Returning to animation, a stronger gust of wind blows the comic book out of the trash can and onto the street, where it opens to the next story. "The Crate" This section of the film is based on the short story of the same name. Mike Latimer (Don Keefer), a janitor at the prestigious Horlicks University, drops a quarter which rolls behind a grate under a basement staircase. While attempting to retrieve it, he comes across a wooden storage crate marked "Ship to Horlicks University via Julia Carpenter - Arctic Expedition - June 19, 1834" hidden underneath the staircase. He calls Dexter Stanley (Fritz Weaver), a biology professor, to notify him of the find, drawing Dexter away from a faculty social gathering. Also at the gathering is Dexter's good friend and colleague, the mild-mannered Professor Henry Northrup (Hal Holbrook), who witnesses his perpetually drunk, obnoxious, and emotionally abusive wife Wilma (Adrienne Barbeau), whom he often daydreams of killing, annoy the guests and embarrass both herself and Henry at the gathering. Meeting Mike at Amberson Hall, Stanley helps him remove the crate and move it into a nearby lab. While attempting to open it, Mike sticks his hand inside the crate and begins yelling in pain. The crate briefly opens to reveal that it contains a shaggy, ape-like creature with sharp fangs (Darryl Ferrucci). Despite its diminutive size, the creature promptly kills and entirely devours Mike, leaving behind only his mangled boot. Running from the lab, Dexter bumps into graduate student Charlie Gereson (Robert Harper), who he frantically tells about what has happened. While skeptical, Charlie agrees to investigate. The two return to the lab to find it covered in blood, with both the crate and the creature gone. They find that the crate has been moved back under the stairs, where they also find Mike's boot. Wanting to measure the bite marks on the boot, Charlie examines the crate closer. Unfortunately, the creature pounces on Charlie, killing him as Dexter flees and takes the boot with him. Traumatized and hysterical, Dexter runs to Henry's house after Wilma leaves for the evening. He relates everything that has happened since the crate was discovered, and argues that the monster must be disposed of somehow. Seeing the creature as a way to rid himself of his wife, Henry appears to believe Dexter's story. To that end, Henry concocts a scheme to lure Wilma near the crate. He spikes Dexter's drink with sleeping pills, writes a note describing the fake assault of a college student by Dexter to lure Wilma into Amberson Hall, and cleans up all evidence of blood from the lab. When Wilma arrives, Henry lures her under the basement stairs where the monster seems to be unresponsive. When Wilma begins ranting at Henry for his stunt, the beast mauls and eats her. The next morning, Henry describes to Dexter how he secured the beast back inside its crate, then dumped the crate into a nearby quarry where it sinks to the bottom. He assures Dexter that the creature has drowned and they will let the authorities handle the disappearances. However, it is subsequently revealed to the audience that the beast is still alive, and is last seen tearing the crate apart. Returning to animation, it begins raining as the comic book turns to the next page, beginning the final story. "They're Creeping Up on You!" This last story was also written specifically for the film. Upson Pratt (E.G. Marshall) is a cruel, wealthy, and ruthless business mogul who suffers from mysophobia, which has him living in a luxurious, futuristic, and hermetically-sealed penthouse apartment outfitted with electric locks and surveillance cameras. His apparent contacts with the outside world are primarily through the telephone and are mostly made to put-upon employees. One stormy night, Pratt receives a call from George Gendron, one of his subordinates, about the fact that his company (Pratt International) has recently bought the Pacific Aerodyne company in a corporate takeover. Gendron also informs Mr. Pratt that the takeover caused a business rival, Norman Castonmeyer, to commit suicide, much to Pratt's delight. During the call, Pratt slowly begins finding cockroaches around his apartment. A fanatical insect hater, Pratt arms himself with bug spray in an attempt to rectify the situation. Before long, someone manages to get through on Pratt's private line. The caller turns out to be Norman Castonmeyer's widow Lenore (Ann Muffly) who tearfully recalls her husband's final moments and hysterically curses out Pratt for causing his death. After finding pieces of cockroaches in his food processor, Pratt receives a call from his building's landlord Carl Reynolds (Mike Tierno). Despite calling during his vacation in Orlando, Florida, Pratt forces Reynolds to send handyman Mr. White to call an exterminator under the threat of firing him. Soon after, Pratt discovers more cockroaches in a box of cereal, trying and failing to crush any that he can. Mr. White (David Early) soon arrives outside Pratt's door, mockingly speaking in a stereotypical minstrel voice while talking to Pratt to mention that he is calling fumigators. Afterwards, a rolling blackout heads towards the building. During the blackout, cockroaches numbering in the hundreds of thousands begin pouring out of every nook and cranny in Pratt's apartment. As the situation rapidly becomes worse, Pratt activates the emergency power and attempts to call the police for assistance. Unfortunately, the police are unable to be of any help because of the blackout, nor is Mr. White who is stuck in the elevator. At his wit's end, Pratt locks himself inside a climate-controlled panic room to escape the growing swarm of cockroaches only to get another call from Lenore who continues to curse at him. Pratt also discovers that the cockroaches have already infested the panic room as well. With no way to escape, he is overwhelmed by the cockroaches, which induces a fatal heart attack. When electricity returns to the building, the apartment is now devoid of cockroaches. Pratt's corpse is shown in the panic room, where Mr. White calls in to report, but gets no answer. Mr. White mockingly quotes "What's the matter, Mr. Pratt? Bugs got your tongue?" However, Pratt's body soon begins to contort as cockroaches burst out of his mouth and body, re-enveloping the panic room. Mr. White continues to call his name to get a response and then quotes "bastard". Returning to animation, a final gust of wind blows the comic book further down the street, where it lands on a nearby curb. Epilogue The following morning, two garbage collectors (Marty Schiff and Tom Savini) find the Creepshow comic book on the curb. They look at the ads in the book for X-ray specs and a Charles Atlas bodybuilding course. They also see the advertisement for the voodoo doll that was briefly glimpsed earlier, but lament that the order form has already been redeemed. Inside the house, Stan complains to his wife that he is suffering from neck pain, figuring that he must have sprained it. Upstairs, Billy is revealed to have sent away for the voodoo doll seen earlier and has decorated it with a piece of his father's clothing and some of his hair. Stan clutches his throat in Pain as Billy repeatedly and gleefully jabs the voodoo doll with a pin, finally getting revenge on his father for his past abuse. Transitioning to animation for a final time, the images of Billy jabbing the doll becomes the cover of the next issue of Creepshow. The Creep is seen holding the same comic book, laughing sinisterly as a candle goes out.

It seems like almost yesterday that “the Father of American Physical culture” was born. He was the predecessor of Charles Atlas and a number of individuals who emphasized body building and nutrition as the keys to long and healthy life. Bernarr Macfadden was born on August 16, 1868 in the small community of Mill Spring, in Wayne County, Missouri. A weak and sickly child, he was orphaned at age eleven and sent to live with another Wayne County farm family where he found that hard work and good food made him strong and healthy. At age 13 he moved to St. Louis, obtained an indoor office job, and found that his health again declined. At that point he dedicated himself to a new lifestyle that included fasting and strenuous exercise. He believed that this routine would enable him to live to be 150 years of age. For the rest of his life he did not eat meat or bread, which he called the “Staff of Death.” Macfadden began numerous vegetarian restaurants, published over 100 books about his

Shop now by visiting LivingHour.org/clothing. The very first essential thing to do in securing radiant health and physical strength is the deep breathing of pure, outside air. We can live without food for many weeks, without water for many days, but we cannot live without air for more than a few minutes. Air is equally a food as fruits and vegetables. When it enters into the composition of the body, its value cannot be over emphasized. Yet because it is so cheap we often ignore its real value. Remember that oxygen is LIFE! The more oxygen you breathe, the more health and strength you will get. This life-giving oxygen furnishes the power to pump the blood through the heart. It assists in carrying off the waste products from the myriad of tiny cells in the body, and helps to build new and stronger cells.

These are Dawn and Clint's three questions: Question 1: (Clint) You've been lucky enough to write for various things, whether that's games or even possibly doing some technical writing when you once worked in tech support. What are some of the things you took away from those writing jobs that you've been able to apply to current work in comics? Question 2: (Dawn) In one of the Inktober challenge drawings, you did it on a skirt but is there a medium you prefer and why? Question 3: (Both) What are some of the pros and cons of working together not just as collaborators but also as a married couple? Also be sure to head over to iTunes, if you're not there already, and give us a rating and review. This really does help boost our presence in the comics and podcast communities, which in turn helps build the amount of knowledge and love we can provide and spread out to all the comic creators around the world. Subscribe (iTunes)Subscribe (Stiticher) This time on Built to Play, Daniel visited Xbox Canada and Arman discusses Canadian games and the great outdoors. The Built to Play staff doesn't make it outside often. Sure we can see the outside from the windows in our studio, but we rarely experience it. Just kidding. Our studio doesn't have windows. Anyway, Daniel actually left the studio to talk to play some upcoming Xbox One games, while Arman talked to game designers about why they liked the outside. For Arman, it's baby steps. At X14, Daniel played Sunset Overdrive, Fable Legends, The Evil Within, Mortal Kombat X and Alien: Isolation. Here's a couple samples of what he found: Sunset Overdrive: The problem mostly comes in when your weapon variety starts to show up. I had a flaming  gential-themed shotgun, a disc gun that fired vinyl records, and a massive hand cannon called the Dirty Harry. None of these guns really favoured the high speed, far away combat style that the grind-rails encouraged. The shotgun worked great for enemies nearby, and the hand cannon was perfect when I slowed myself down and focused on enemies, but otherwise, the disc gun’s bouncing records was the only weapon that worked at the high speeds the game wanted me to move at. Fable Legends: It’s unbelievably fluid, and part of that may have had to do with the fact that it was running on five networked machines, but god damn if it wasn’t impressive. The game doesn’t currently have a five player local option, which could be a problem moving forward, but apparently Lionhead is looking into smartglass support for the villain player.  The Evil Within: At one point, I walked down a hallway, and triggered a rope that dragged me into a closet full of spinning blades. I tried shooting at the blades to jam them, but of course, the game didn’t exactly highlight the tiny blinking light I was meant to shoot at until after I died. And then I lost about 20 minutes of progress.  Mortal Kombat X: This is a game where the aforementioned Cassie Cage (...) can kneecap her opponents, shoot them through the head, pull out some gum, chew it, stick it over the bullet hole, and watch as a blood soaked bubble pops out.  Alien: Isolation:  The sound of it approaching was enough to get my knees shaking, and the subtle cutaway when it catches you is probably a thousand times spookier than any gore-shot could have been. The Xenomorph runs around unscripted too, doing whatever its AI feels like, so there’s no way to rely on rote memorization. It’s all about your skill at tracking, avoiding, and using the incredibly limited toolset available to you.  Tune in about 50 seconds into the show to hear us chat about these games and _Assassin's Creed: Unity. _Plus we hear from Nitai Bessette, the level design director, of AC: Unity and Matt Grandstaff, the global community lead at Bethesda Softworks. Daniel also met two designers from Lionhead on the Fable Legends team, the game's directorDavid Eckelberry and the villain's designer, Lewis Brundish. **Or read the whole article here. ** The Long Dark - Dawn The Long Dark - Sunset Kona - The Letter Kona - The Station Kris Krug - Roche Point, North Vancouver, British Columbia Northern Pix - Rankin Inlet, Nunavut, Canada For the staff at Built to Play, Canada is probably our favourite place to be. We have free healthcare, moose, and poutine. It's great, and a lot of game designers would agree with us. As we've repeated multiple times on the show, Canada is the third largest centre for game development in the world, right behind the United States and Japan. Which is why it feels odd when we can call so few of those games "Canadian." Games like Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Mass Effect, and Assassin's Creed are all games made in Canada, but you wouldn't know that from looking at it or playing it or talking to the developers. To be fair to the first two, Mass Effect and Deus Ex both have had levels set in Canada (Vancouver and Montreal respectively), but Assassin's Creed, even when Ubisoft Montreal leads development, never feels like it belongs here.  The weirdest game in the series has to be Assassin's Creed III. This open world assassination game set in the American Revolution was partially planned by Ubisoft, a French company, led by Ubisoft Montreal, a Canadian company, with parts built all over the world. It's clearly about the American Revolution, but it's not made by all that many Americans and while they doubtless did their research, the game feels culturally nomadic. It has very few traces of authorship. No one person built this game and there's no one vision guiding it. So it's not Canadian, but I'd argue it's not very American either. It's a multinational project undertaken by one of the largest game publishers in the world, Ubisoft.  The majority of development studios in Canada are owned by larger publishers, like EA, Square Enix, or Microsoft, none of which care very much about where these games are physically made so long as Americans buy them. So the majority of Canada's big budget games don't feel very Canadian.  Alexandre Fiset felt this weirdness while he was at Beenox, a studio based in Quebec City that's owned by Activision. Beenox makes games starring Spider-Man, sometimes based on the ongoing film series. Fiset wasn't satisfied working on a Marvel hero living in a fantasy New York, so he left the company to start Parabole Games. Parabole recently completed a kickstarter for the game Kona, an episodic series about a supernatural mystery in northern Quebec. Fiset wasn't alone in thinking about his game as a cultural product either. Raphael van Lierop, founder of Hinterland Studios and designer of the Long Dark, has been thinking about game design as a way to make something local. The Long Darktakes place near the mountains of British Columbia, far north of where van Lierop lives on Vancouver Island. It's a survival game based in the rough Canadian wilderness. That's a little odd in itself. Two designers wanted to put a bit of local flavour into their games, and both of them based their in the wild. The conception of Canada as this vast land of forest and tundra seems almost like a stereotype. But, as they'll both argue, Canada looks more like that stereotype than Canadians like to admit.  Fiset and van Lierop discuss Canada, the garrison mentality, and why cultural diversity is important for all games, not just Canadian ones. You can hear from them starting 38:45 The Long Dark's survival mode is now available on Steam Early Access. Kona's first episode will be released in April 2015. You can play the demo here. Once again thanks to the Free Music Archive for access to great bands like Podington Bear. In our Xbox One preview section, we used the following tracks from that band: "Nature Kid", "Moondots and Polkabeams", "Lake Victoria" and "Belfast". Subscribe (iTunes)Subscribe (Stitcher) In what has to be the longest coherent rant they've ever put to audio, Dan and Arman discuss the ongoing harassment in the video game community.  One of the first pieces I ever wrote for Built to Play was the style guide. On the podcast, and in the articles, we should limit our  use of the word gamer. We agreed to that rule because it's not a word that makes a lot of sense.  Not everyone who plays video games is a gamer, just like not everyone who watches movies is a film buff. Now it's unusable, even in the strictest sense.  Since 'real gamers' began attacking Zoe Quinn for supposed ethical infractions or Anita Sarkeesian for inserting politics into innocent games, the term has become toxic. They've released pounds of personal information online, scared women out from their homes and riddled their social media with death threats. Let's not dance around it. These attacks have been misogynistic, largely targeted towards women who don't fixate on shooters and Nintendo nostalgia. Some people use Quinn's activities to say all games journalism is corrupt. HASHTAGGAMERGATE! But that fundamentally misunderstands what games writing is. Most articles on sites like Gamespot and Polygon commentate and criticise. Think game reviews or big convention coverage. On the few occasions where they engage in journalism, often it's redistributing content. Here's a trailer a publisher gave us. I found this neat thing on the Internet. That's not a fault of the websites, that's just the job. The games industry is insular and secretive, so there are few opportunities to do professional reporting. That's true with a lot of enthusiast press, like in comics, music or movies, but especially so in games. The old adage is that anyone can be a journalist. Just point a camera out your window. You have to call someone to be a reporter. When there's no one to call, however, there's not much you can do. Sites like Polygon, USGamer and Kill Screen still go out of their way to make great articles about game development and the video game community, although few people read them. That's true of all media by the way. The Washington Post's biggest story in 2013 wasn't the Edward Snowden scandal. It was a collection of pictures of a busted Sochi bathroom. All of this is to say that people who accuse games journalism of being corrupt are missing the point. I hesitate to call anything written on this site journalism. It's definitely not reporting. We're still honest when it comes to our opinions, as I expect most in the industry are. Enthusiast  writing serves a different purpose than conventional reporting. They disseminate product information and evaluate media.  That lack of diversity is why scaring away strong writers who go beyond that, like Jenn Frank and Mattie Brice, helps no one. They were among the few people who went beyond criticism to question the games they played and the people who made them. 'Real gamers' encourage bias in the industry by making the pool of commentators smaller and the voices less varied. Courtesy Wikimedia Commons I also challenge gamers on whether they are the equivalent of music, television or film enthusiasts. Outside of video games, enthusiasts seem to recognize that their medium of choice is a broad spectrum of content, made for many audiences. Some genres might be dismissed off-hand, like the romantic comedy or pop music, but even then good versions of these make it through to critical appeal. A lot of music fans acknowledged that 'Call Me Maybe' by Carly Rae Jepsen was fun and an enjoyable piece of music ephemera. Or that while 500 Days of Summer has its problems, the film tries to take the romantic comedy in a new direction. Being a fan of a medium entails a willingness to dive into its depths and explore all possible permutations of it. It doesn't mean tripping head first into the shallow end to wallow in its most obvious features. If you enjoy  big budget games, go ahead. No one can take that away from you. There are plenty of games made by big publishers that are genuinely great, but no game is perfect. Wolfenstein: The New Order has to be one of my favourite games of the year. It also has some groan-worthy dialogue and has terrible enemy artificial intelligence. Every game merits criticism, from indies to those old Nintendo titles. People who have such a narrow definition of games need grow up. More people have launched an Angry Bird than have made Mario jump. More adult women play games than teenage boys. Those blockbuster franchises won't vanish any time soon, but as video games become more popular, players have be more accommodating to more kinds of people and more kind of games. There is no sense in attacking people who are trying to make games like Depression Quest, because that's only going to become more prevalent, not less. So if gamers are people who like the most bland of the bland, and feel justified in ruining people's lives on behalf of a fool's errand, I don't want to be associated with them. Call me a game player. Call me an enthusiast. But please, I'm not a gamer. Gamers are about as self-absorbed as men's rights advocates, who can only conceive of the world in childish black and white dichotomies. I'm embarrassed to have needed to write this rant. Games are supposed to be enjoyable. Ideally, when coming away from a great game, we should feel enriched. A well-crafted game can engender joy, sadness, hope and occasionally fun.  All this does is make me feel disappointed in all of us. Games, and the people who play them, are capable of so much more. Thanks to writer and community manager Emma Woolley who talked to us about her article on the topic on the Globe and Mail.Note, she didn't play any part in this rant beyond what you hear in her interview. Take a listen for yourself starting 1:30. She comes off sounding far more optimistic than either Daniel or I feel right now. We used music from the Free Music Archive: "Photosphere" by Charles Atlas and "Lost Radio Station Sings Me Up the Tunnel" by Fields of Ohio. Before Arnold Schwarzenegger, even before Charles Atlas, there was Eugen Sandow. Rising from obscurity in Prussia, Sandow became an international celebrity during the Golden Age of the Strongman in the late 19th Century for his amazing feats of strength and his well sculpted physique. While Sandow wowed crowds in the United Kingdom and United States, he also preached a new gospel of physical fitness and well being. Our guest today has recently published a biography of Sandow and his times. His name is David Waller and his book is The Perfect Man: The Muscular Life and Times of Eugen Sandow, Victorian Strong Man. Mr. Waller has worked as a journalist for the Financial Times and has written and published two books on business. He lives in South West London with his wife and three children. For more information about the book, visit Victorian Strong Man.

"The events will happen, just as they are written. I'm afraid so and we can't stem the tide. But at least we can stop being carried away with the flood!" And there's a veritable flood of unexpected stars in the Season One closer, The Reign of Terror. Rowan Atkinson captures the younger three-quarters of the TARDIS team, while Jonny Vegas bangs them up. Bill Murray busts them out only for Ian to nearly come a cropper at the hands of Rentaghost's Mr Meaker, who himself has another bust in mind when it comes to Babs. And an extra gets his moment in the sun too – quite literally – as William Hartnell's Lime Grove-inspired agoraphobia prevents him from indulging in a spot of location filming. The first Doctor's old body may already be wearing thin after walking all the way to Paris but he looks as robust as Charles Atlas next to his galactically feeble granddaughter Susan, who does more to imperil the time travellers than either First Deputy Robespierre or the last-past-the-post Traitor Party. But even in 1794 or 1964, nothing is black and white, so who’s right and who’s wrong? Robespierre or Renan? Barbara or Ian? Jim or Martin? Listen and decide…
