Tónlist í þættinum í dag: Litla sæta ljúfan góða / Hljómsveit Ingimars Eydal (lag Thore Skogman, texti Valgeir Sigurðsson) Gling gló / Björk Guðmundsdóttir og tríó Guðmundar Ingólfssonar (Alfreð Clausen og Kristín Engilbertsdóttir) Theme From A Summer Place / Percy Faith Orchestra (Max Steiner) Days of Wine and Roses / Henry Mancini og hljómsveit (Johnny Mercer & Henri Mancini) UMSJÓN: GUNNAR HANSSON OG GÍGJA HÓLMGEIRSDÓTTIR

I just got back from a week in Iceland so naturally I had to make a mix with music from Icelandic artists. The usual suspects are here - Sigur Ros, Johann Johannsson, Bjork, Olafur Arnalds, along with some new additions. It still boggles my mind that the tiny island has produced such amazing music. But now, having been there, I guess it makes a bit more sense because the place is unique. The landscape and spirit seeps into your mind and body like hot water through porous volcanic rock. It's impossible not to fall in love with the people and the natural beauty. Hopefully this mix can be your own mini vaca to Iceland. Cheers! Halló! Week two finds Rob and Ellie heading a third of the way round the country, from the south towards the Westfjords, for 'Rams' director Grímur Hákonarson's second feature film 'The County'. Arndís Hrönn Egilsdóttir plays Inga, one half of a farming couple left to fight a local farming co-op for their bullying and shady keep-it-in-the-community tactics. With true life story elements, calm and incredibly composed cinematography from Mart Taniel, and a complex central performance from Egilsdóttir, this is not just a rehash of elements seen before on the pod, but a fascinating look at how small communities may deal with the changing face of farming and commerce in Iceland. Also starring Sveinn Ólafur Gunnarsson, Sigurður Sigurjónsson, Þorsteinn Bachmann and Hannes Óli Ágústsson. Mother's Blood, Sister Songs : Episode 1 'Mother's Blood' Broadcast on RTE Lyric fm Sunday December 29th 6pm-7pm. Mother's Blood, Sister Songs is a two part radio and podcast documentary, the story of how the genetics of Iceland reveals its Irish motherhood, presented by Irish composer Linda Buckley and produced by Athena Media for RTE lyric fm. In Epsiode 1 'Mother's Blood' Linda begins her journey at her parents dairy farm at the Old Head of Kinsale, sharing her own story of sound and music and how Iceland became part it of through music and how when she finally went there in 2014 to write music, she felt strangely at home. That quest to uncover the connections between Ireland and Iceland starts a journey through time and history, from 9th Century Gaelic ireland during the Vikings to the genetics research of Dr. Kári Stefánsson in Reykjavik. Linda finds out about the female slaves taken by Norwegian Vikings to Iceland and becomes fascinated by one story in the Icelandic Sagas of Melkorka, a supposedly mute Irish slave, said to be the daughter of an Irish King. Is Melkorka real or imagined and where these Gaelic slaves the first mothers of Iceland? Here's another impossible task - compiling a mix of the best film scores of the decade. Like any of my other year-end mixes, this is not really a "Best" mix. It's a collection of scores that I listened to a lot and fit within my ambient aesthetic. The tracks are laid out chronologically from when the films were released. Starting with Monsters in 2010 to Ex Machina in 2015 and finishing up with American Woman in 2019 There are scores from four TV series included in this mix - Halt and Catch Fire, Mr. Robot, Stranger Things, and The Knick. They are some of my favorite soundtracks and definitely worth checking out. There's not much else to say about this mix, it's pretty straight forward. I'm sure I missed a bunch of very good film scores but I think this mix holds together as a cohesive set. I hope you enjoy it! Cheers! This mix has been brewing in my head for the last couple of years. Basically I've been planning a follow up to the Luminouspaces mix since I posted it in 2016. I finally got going on the sequel a few weeks ago while listening to "Constellations" by Jane Antonia Cornish. It's an absolutely lovely album. If you like modern classical recordings you'll definitely enjoy it. The mix begins and ends with a track from Constellations. In between you'll find a collection of modern classical favorites from the last year or two. Like a lot of my mixes, it's a beautiful compilation with a tinge of melancholy. Cheers! Davíð Roach Gunnarsson setur sveigjanlegar lygar í hátalarakerfi Lestarinnar í dag og fjallar um nýútkomna breiðskífu Gusgus, The Lies are More Flexible. Á N1 Ártúnshöfða er starfsmaður sem þykir hafa afar góð áhrif á viðskiptavini sína. Lestin kom við í bílalúgunni í Ártúnshöfða og ákvað að kynnast manninum betur. Og Tinnabók dagsins er Krabbinn með gylltu klærnar, viðmælandi Gísla Marteins Baldurssonar í dag verður Hrafn Jónsson. Umsjón: Anna Gyða Sigurgísladóttir og Eiríkur Guðmundsson
On this week's Snacky Tunes, Greg Bresnitz interviews Claire Wadsworth of the restaurant La Copine. La Copine began as a pop-up kitchen in 2009. Chef Nikki Hill partnered with singer-songwriter Claire Wadsworth in Philadelphia, where they started their business serving farm-to-table brunch on a food cart. In 2012, Nikki and Claire moved to California. Now living in Yucca Valley, they have opened their first restaurant in Flamingo Heights. After the break, a live in-studio performance by violinist Nadia Sirota. “A one-woman contemporary-classical commissioning machine” (Pitchfork), violist Nadia Sirota is best known for her singular sound and expressive execution, coaxing works and collaborations from the likes of Nico Muhly, Daníel Bjarnason, Valgeir Sigurðsson, Judd Greenstein, Marcos Balter, and Missy Mazzoli. Her debut album First Things First (New Amsterdam Records) was named a record of the year by The New York Times, and her follow-up Baroque (Bedroom Community and New Amsterdam) has been called “beautiful music of a higher order than anything else you will hear this year” by SPINMedia website PopMatters. Nadia also hosts the Meet the Composer podcast on Q2 Music, exploring the work of living composers through her interviews and musical selections.

For such a small country, Iceland has produced a surprising number of excellent artists. From Bjork to Mum to Seabear to Olaf Arnalds to Sigur Ros, it's really extraordinary the amount of wonderful music that comes from that island. This last mix of 2011 is an Icelandic journey. All the music is created by artists from Iceland. The brilliant idea for it came from loyal listener, Kevin. I wasn't sure how much music of Iceland I had in my collection but I was surprised to find quite a bit. Icelandic music for me begins & ends with Sigur Ros & Bjork. They are both in the mix, with Jonsi, from Sigur Ros, making multiple appearances. In addition to the Sigur Ros tune, Jonsi contributes "Stokkseyri" from Riceboy Sleeps & "9" by Frakkur. When Kevin suggested the mix & the title, he was thinking of Iceland as a land of extremes...glaciers & volcanoes, 24hr days & 24hr nights. This mix doesn't swing too wildly from one extreme to another. It's more ice than fire. A few of the tunes do build in typical post-rock fashion, but generally things are fairly subdued. I used two Johann Johannsson tracks fairly close together, which I normally don't like to do but the IBM track just seemed to fit perfectly with the preceding cut. Plus I was just happy to be able to use that IBM track again because I LOVE it! The pic in this post is from a terrific blog called "Stuck in Customs." Check out the blog or go to his Flickr stream to see some amazing photos. I'm a little tired of the HDR effect in photos but Tret Ratcliff does a really nice job with it & it definitely helps that he is shooting in unbelievable locations. This was a fun mix to put together & I'd like to thank Kevin for suggesting it, I'm very happy with how it turned out.
