Victoria Pendleton is one of Britain's greatest ever athletes, but has often felt like a failure and fraud. She tells Simon Hattenstone about her Olympic golds, the misery that came with them, and the joy she has found since she retired. And Twisters is the tornado blockbuster that almost has it all. But its two hot stars – Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones – avoid a climactic smooch. Is Steven Spielberg to blame?

"You're only as good as you are on your worst day... be better than your opponent on that day." It's a fitting quote shared by Australia's most successful track cyclist Anna Meares from her childhood coach Reg Tucker. This Australian cycling great is one well-qualified Chef de Mission for the Australian Olympic Team in Paris 2024. An Olympic rookie in 2004, who completely rehabilitated herself after THAT crash in 2008, then used her famous rivalry with English cyclist Victoria Pendleton to spur her on to success at London 2012, Anna proudly led her fellow athletes as flag bearer in Rio 2016. The Olympic and Commonwealth gold medallist credits what she learned about vulnerability in her personal life as parent and foster parent, and partner, with helping her round out her mindset. In this candid chat with three-time Olympian, Australian water polo player and En Route to Paris host Rowie Webster, Anna pulls back the curtain to speak about vulnerability, the pressures of sport, fear of failure and what kind of surprises might be in store in Paris.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

British track cyclist Milly Tanner has had a whirlwind last few years, and she's determined to leave her mark. The 24-year-old switched from swimming to cycling back in 2017 through UK Sport's talent transfer programme ‘Discover your Power' – a gruelling process in itself as you'll hear in this SportSpiel interview– but she hasn't looked back since. A bronze medal at the 2021 World Championships in the team sprint, a silver in the same event at the 2020 European Championships, as well as competing at the Commonwealth Games last year are just some of the highlights. But as is so often the case in the world of elite sport, it has been a rollercoaster at times. There's highs, there's lows and there are days where you really have to grind to get through. For those in British Cycling there is also the pressure of living up to some of the greats that have come before – think Jason and Laura Kenny, Chris Hoy and many, many more. But cycling still retains that community feel and when Milly faced her first big setback – not making the most recent team for the World Championships – it was another legend in Victoria Pendleton who provided the right advice at the right time. In this podcast Milly openly takes us through her journey into cycling, from battling back from setbacks, to initially feeling like she had to catch up after arriving in the sport relatively late. But she also takes us through some of the causes that are close to her heart, and helped lead to her joining the pioneering Unlocked programme run by the Women's Sport Trust. From period poverty to body image, these are just some of things Milly wants to use her voice to raise awareness of – and is part of the legacy she wants to leave from her time in elite sport. In a world that's so dominated by social media and comparisons, these are messages that need to be heard. Milly also takes us through the influence the military has in her life, including how important the impressions you leave on people are, as well as her aims in the future as she looks to fulfil her potential. We live in a very goal-orientated society. So many of us are continually striving and thinking - 'what's next?' We may believe that when we get promoted at work, move into a bigger house or finally get a six pack – THEN we will be happy. However, you may have noticed that the horizon we are striving for always seems to stay just out of reach. Once one goal is ticked off – we want another one, ideally bigger – and so the sense of inner satisfaction we are really looking for is perpetually elusive.Clearly there is nothing wrong with goals, they are important. But, they are by definition in the future, whereas our values are how we want to be in the world from moment to moment. And there is good research that shows the more we live in accordance with our values, the higher sense of wellbeing we are likely to experience. One person I spoke to about values was Professor Steve Peters who came up with the Chimp Model - a metaphor for how we think, than helped many elite sportspeople from Ronnie O'Sullivan through to Victoria Pendleton and Steven Gerrard.**Follow me:on instagram https://www.instagram.com/simonmundie/on twitter https://twitter.com/simonmundieAnd for the 'Mundie on Monday' newsletter - featuring three of the best Life Lessons from three years and 200 of these conversations - head to simonmundie.comPlease do share this episode with anyone who may benefit, and rate and review wherever you get your podcasts. We chat with Matt Stephens about life as a Professional Cyclist, Commentator and Digital Content Creator. From a young age you could find Matt out and about on his bike, whether it be out with his mates, going to and from school or out with his dad. From then on Matts career has seen its fair share of ups and downs, from cycling in Europe to turning Pro to Sponsors pulling out of team deals, to injury. After Matts injury he decided it was time to try his hand at something else and joined the police serving on the force for 12 years, from there Matt has once again jumped into the world of professional cycling, although this time he is behind a microphone or camera, sharing his passion and knowledge for the sport. We also chat about the ever growing love affair between Britain and Cycling as both a spectator sport and recreation, with characters such as Sir Bradley Wiggins, Victoria Pendleton, Sir Chris Hoy, Laura Kenny and Mark Cavendish to name just a few, excelling at the sport and inspiring new people to get out on their bikes. Today, we’re going cycling! This week we are chatting to former Olympic, European and Commonwealth cycling champion, British jockey and all-round daredevil, Victoria Pendleton CBE. Dreaming of becoming a Vet as a child, Victoria's journey into track cycling was somewhat organic. Her childhood love of sport combined with her father's enthusiasm for family cycling trips, leading her to become one of the best female track cyclists Great Britain has ever seen. We discuss with her how she became a champion, what it was like to train at Olympic level and how she felt about retirement from the sport. Since retiring from competitive cycling Victoria has been to keen to embrace all kinds of unexpected challenges which have pushed her outside her comfort zone, from training with equine performance coach, Yogi Breisner, and becoming a competitive jockey to attempting to climb Everest. She has jumped out of planes and has literally thrown herself into everything with positivity and determination. However, positivity has not always come easily to Victoria. She chats to us about her constant self-doubt, how she managed to pull herself through a dark period in her life and how developing a love for surfing helped her cope with depression. We find out about her involvement with charity, The Wave Project, helping young people with emotional and physical wellbeing through surfing and why she believes challenging yourself can be good for mental health. One thing you can't fail to be impressed by is Victoria's courage as she always approaches new challenges with the determination to succeed, she certainly is an inspiring example of what champions are made of.©photo credit: Matt Hardy/Thrudark See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
