Using a 36-foot motor launch, the 18 sailors, led by Lieutenant Commander John Morrill began their 2,000-mile journey through Japanese infested waters. With only a watch, compass, homemade sextant and a few maps it was an incredible feat of navigation. Their story is one of great audacity, where the generosity and bravery of the Filipino people, along with sheer luck played an integral role in the outcome of events. War and conflict turns lives upside down and millions of adults and children witness atrocities, lose loved ones and often lose their homes and even their countries. The psychological and emotional suffering can continue long after the immediate threat to their life has gone. One in every five people touched by war – that's 20% - will have a mental health problem that needs help and one in twenty or 5% will be severely affected. As the humanitarian crisis deepens in the Ukraine with millions under bombardment and ten million people forced from their homes, Claudia Hammond and her guests explore the evidence behind the mental health interventions that do take place around the world: do they work and are they reaching the people who need them? Two Ukrainian psychiatrists tell Claudia about the psychological support they're trying to coordinate for their traumatised fellow Ukrainians. Dr Iryna Frankova is also a psychologist and she's chair of the ECNP Traumatic Stress Network and with colleagues she's helped to launch a new downloadable chatbot which offers information and psychological first aid. Dr Orest Suvalo from the Institute of Mental Health at the Ukrainian Catholic University is in Lviv in the west of Ukraine and he's been trying to coordinate care for fleeing citizens as they arrive at the city's railway station. Claudia's panel includes Bill Yule, Emeritus Professor of Applied Child Psychiatry at Kings College, London, who pioneered evidence-based interventions for children caught up in war and trauma (he's one of the founders of the Children and War Foundation set up in the 1990s during the wars in the Balkans); Professor Emily Holmes from the department of psychology at the University of Uppsala in Sweden who uses the power of mental imagery to reduce traumatic, intrusive memories or flashbacks (she's been using these techniques to develop treatments for refugees who have fled war and conflict) and Dr Peter Ventevogel, psychiatrist and medical anthropologist and senior mental health officer with UNHCR, the refugee agency at the United Nations. And Dr Kennedy Amone P'Olak, Professor of Psycho-traumatology at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa joins from Uganda, where he's tracked the mental health of hundreds of the children and young people who were abducted and recruited by the Lord's Resistance Army in Northern Uganda. A few months back a girlfriend of mine set up a lunch to introduce me to her incredible friend, Amel Najjar. Our lunch began at noon and ended at four and could have gone on all day. Amel is one of the most interesting, inspirational, and real people you will ever meet. I am excited for you to get to know Amel and her amazing journey from growing up in Jordan and witnessing war first hand to beginning the Children of War Foundation. When people say one person can not make a difference, they have not met Amel Najjar!
Giles's reaction to unimaginable physical and mental trauma has been to become a social founder, setting up the global Legacy of War Foundation using his award-winning photography and media skills to document, and counteract, the legacy of war across the world.Giles' physical and mental resilience are like nothing I have seen or heard before. In this episode of Social Founder Stories you'll hear how throughout his life, Giles has responded to adversity to create impact, but in particular, how stepping on an IED in Afghanistan, left him desperately fighting for his life for 47 days in intensive care, and then 18 months' rehabilitation, after the loss of both legs and his left arm.No-one expected him to survive those horrendous injuries, let alone to find the drive to continue to work and to travel, using his professional skills and his determination to create high-level positive social impact, setting up and growing his Foundation.Giles talks in-depth about the work of international NGOs, the power of photography to create impact, and his work in Syria, Africa, Cambodia and Afghanistan, woven into his personal journey leading to his founding of the Legacy of War Foundation, his gruelling recovery from his injuries in 2011, his learnings and values. You will hear little from me in this interview. Giles tells his powerful story and I listen, moved and amazed at his courage.Donate to the Legacy of War Foundation here if you can.Follow Giles:Twitter: @GilesDuleyInstagram: @GilesDuleyFacebook: @Giles.DuleyListen to Giles' founder story in the Social Founder Stories podcast series, Episode 4 - on all podcast platforms. “I don’t give voice to anyone, but I have a really amazing tool and that’s my camera. I use my camera to amplify the voices of people who feel unheard.” Today photographer Giles Duley is the CEO and founder of the Legacy of War Foundation, and an activist for the rights of those living with disabilities caused by conflict. But he started out working in music and fashion, shooting for magazines like Vogue, GQ and Arena. Since 2004, his portrait photography has taken him all over the world, from Iraq and Jordan to South Sudan and Angola, documenting human stories, often in post-conflict zones or crisis situations. In 2015 he was commissioned by UNHCR to document the refugee crisis across the middle east and Europe. In 2011, while working as a photographer in Afghanistan, Giles himself was injured by an improvised explosive device (IED). He is now a triple-amputee. He was back taking photographs the following year. The legacy of war is violent and harrowing. Be warned, some of the stories Giles tells are graphic. And yet, this interview is full of warmth, laughter and mostly importantly hope and humanity. Have you listened to Part 1? Don't miss the related Episode 121 on Article 22 in Laos. Sarah Olivieri helps businesses get organized and get going! Whether you are a nonprofit, a for-profit, or just really interested in building better businesses, Sarah Olivieri has something you are going to enjoy in this podcast. As she worked with numerous nonprofits, she realized that they are often well-meaning but slightly disorganized. Don’t misread me here. These are wonderful organizations. The leadership and their staff are not dysfunctional but just in need of a little more focus, structure and process tools for growing their passion and their purpose. Sarah created those tools and they are transforming the organizations with which she works. We share her approach so you can think about your own organization. Maybe you too need to see it with fresh eyes. Enjoy this podcast, learn and share! Most nonprofits are organized with a lot of heart, which is to say, are relatively disorganized. When they do manage to get “organized," silos often form, with invisible walls hampering communication and collaboration between departments, or between administration and non-administration. There can also be entire functions that are missing, resulting in stagnated growth and diminished impact. Without the right kind of organizational structure, nonprofits are bound to feel overwhelmed as they struggle with delegation and wearing too many hats. What to do? Call Sarah Olivieri! Is your nonprofit stuck in the growth process? Sarah can fix that. The founder of PivotGround, Sarah Olivieri is a nonprofit strategist with a passion for helping human-service nonprofits increase capacity, deliver better programming, attract more funding, and best of all, make the world a better place. Resulting from her many years working with nonprofits, Sarah has created a clear process for Executive Directors to not only stay focused on moving the organization forward but to overcome obstacles which naturally arise from growth. Called the Impact Method™, Sarah's proprietary process breaks down a nonprofit's big, audacious goals into clear, easy-to-understand components. Designed to unlock an organization's true capacity and harness it to its full potential, the Impact Method enables everyone involved in an organization, from employees to donors to volunteers, to be energized, focused and pursuing the same bold strategy. Sarah follows that up with the Impact Strategy™ and Continuous Action Plan™, so nonprofits can make clear progress and know exactly what to focus on next. At SAMC, we tell our clients they need to know where they're going and have a plan for how they're going to get there. Helping them develop that plan is part of the work we do to help them drive change. Sounds like Sarah and us are on the same page! Some background on Sarah Sarah Olivieri has over 15 years of nonprofit leadership. The Witness to War Foundation is an organization that preserves the stories of combat veterans from WWII to the present, to honor their service, and educate those who have never served about the sacrifices of generations of service members.
Photographer Giles Duley tells the stories of those without a voice. Giles Duley is a photographer, writer and CEO of the charity Legacy of War Foundation. Duley was as a successful fashion and music photographer for ten years during the nineties, working for such publications as GQ, Vogue, Esquire, Arena and Select Magazine. However, having become disillusioned with celebrity culture, he decided to abandon photography and left London to begin work as a full-time carer. In 2005, he returned to photography, personally funding trips to document the work of NGOs focusing on the stories of those affected by conflict across the world. He photographed the work of charities such as the Mines Advisory Group (MAG), EMERGENCY, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and documenting the lives and stories of people whom he describes as “not victims but victims of circumstance.” In 2011, whilst working in Afghanistan, Duley was to “become the story” after he stepped on an Improvised Explosive Device (IED), losing both his legs and left arm. He was told he would never walk again and that his career was over. However, characteristically stubborn, Duley told his doctors “I’m still a photographer”, and returned to work less than 18 months later. His first project, In October 2012, took him back to Afghanistan to complete his original assignment. His return was the feature of documentary, Walking Wounded: Return to the Frontline, which has since won the Association for International Broadcasting (AIB) Award for Best International Current Affairs Documentary (2013) and the Foreign Press Association (FPA) Award for TV Documentary Story of the Year (2013). Duley has since documented stories in Lebanon, Iraq, Cambodia, Laos, Colombia, Uganda, South Sudan, Angola and Jordan amongst others. His work has featured in numerous papers and magazines, he presented for the series Channel 4 series Unreported World, and he has talked about his experiences on television, radio and at numerous international and national events. His TEDx talk was voted one of the top ten TED talks of 2012. In 2015 he was commissioned by UNHCR to document the refugee crisis across the Middle East and Europe. This year long project produced the exhibition and book – I Can Only Tell You What My Eyes See. Duley was also awarded the Women on the Move media award for his work highlighting the plight of Syrian refugees in Lebanon. In 2017 Major Leoluca Orlando made him an honorary citizen of Palermo for his work with refugees. He is best known for his project Legacy of War that documents the long-term impact of conflict. This project has led to numerous collaborations including with the musicians PJ Harvey and Massive Attack. In 2017, inspired by the stories of those he meet through his work, Duley founded the charity Legacy of War Foundation. An NGO’s focused on supporting communities and individuals to rebuild lives after conflict. Recorded at The Eden Project in Cornwall in June 2018. 5x15 brings together five outstanding individuals to tell of their lives, passions and inspirations. The Case of the Bipolar Sufferer and her Legal Battle for an Abortion S.B. is a 37 year old woman with a diagnosis of bipolar disorder. She wanted a baby but when she was pregnant, became ill, and was sectioned under the Mental Health Act. She then said she couldn't cope with having a baby and began requesting an abortion. Her husband, her mother and the psychiatrists treating her argued that the termination shouldn't go ahead, because S.B. wasn't of "sound mind". Deborah Bowman, Professor of Bioethics, Clinical Ethics and Medical Law at St George's, University of London, discusses why this case, which went to the Court of Protection, is so important for people with mental health problems. The Complex Psychology Behind Wind Farm Opposition National polls consistently show that a majority of people support wind power in principle, but when it comes to local schemes, there's often vociferous opposition. NIMBYs often get the blame. They're portrayed as selfish individuals who say no, for purely self interested reasons. Claudia talks to Dr Chris Jones, social and environmental psychologist from the University of Sheffield, on the windy hills North of the City, about why opposition to wind farms is a complex matter and that the "Not In My Back Yarders" can have valid and varied reasons for being turbine-rejectors. Syrian Children and the Mental Health Impact of War Hundreds of thousands of Syrian children have fled their country as the war there reaches new levels of brutality. All in the Mind has been following the efforts of one Syrian psychologist, Masa Al-kurdi, to provide targeted support for child refugees that specifically address the war trauma they have experienced. Her group of volunteers, the Arab Foundation for the Care of Victims of War and Torture, has been using interventions developed by the Children and War Foundation, specifically designed to teach coping strategies and techniques to as many children as possible. In Jordan, the courses are now in place and Claudia hears from Masa that thousands of children will have been through the courses by the end of 2013. Producer - Fiona Hill.
It's a common misconception that children, unlike adults, are so resilient that they can bounce back from the emotional and psychological impact of war and conflict. The evidence contradicts this and world experts in the field warn that, while some children do recover fully from exposure to the horrors of war, others experience long-term mental health problems. As the war and fighting in Syria continues to claim more lives and destroy many others, Claudia Hammond reports from Jordan on how this latest conflict is exposing yet another generation to the traumatic impact of violence, killing and loss. She investigates what actually helps to alleviate the suffering of these children and prevent a life-time of recurring emotional distress. From the Al Zatari refugee camp in the north of Jordan she hears about the scale of the challenge facing international organisations like Save the Children. And she meets a group of Syrian mental health professionals from the Arab Foundation for Care of Victims of War and Torture who, as refugees themselves, are running a mass outreach programme, developed by some of the world's leaders in child trauma at the Children and War Foundation, to teach as many Syrian children as possible, psychological techniques and coping strategies.
