Given the gross miscarriages of justice exposed by the Post Office/Horizon scandal, the extraordinary delay in reversing the wrongful conviction of Andrew Malkinson due to repeated failures by the Criminal Cases Review Commission and the continuing calls for the case of Lucy Letby to be referred back to the Court of Appeal, is the criminal appeal system in need of fundamental reform? Connecting the dots between recent events, and the health of criminal justice in Britain is Professor Penney Lewis who joins Ken Macdonald KC and Tim Owen KC to explain, in accessible terms, insider legal perspectives on topics such as the basis on which the Court of Appeal decides whether a criminal conviction is unsafe; the admissibility of fresh, post-trial evidence;  the need for reform of juror secrecy; compensation for the wrongly convicted; and whether the Supreme Court should be able to decide for itself whether to entertain an appeal from the Court of Appeal (Criminal Division).  Link to the Law Commission's Summary of its Consultation Paper on criminal appeals: https://cloud-platform-e218f50a4812967ba1215eaecede923f.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/sites/54/2025/02/Criminal-Appeals-CP-Summary.pdf Penney Lewis was formerly Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Centre of Medical Law and Ethics in the Dickson Poon School of Law, King's College, London and is currently the Criminal Law Commissioner of the Law Commission of England and Wales.  The Law Commission is currently consulting on reforms to the law governing criminal appeals including the tests applied by appeal courts and the Criminal Cases Review Commission, post-trial retention of and access to evidence, and compensation and support for the wrongly convicted.  If you're looking for thoughtful legal system insights, a deeper understanding of UK politics, or an unflinching look at UK law and legal battles in Britain, this episode delivers it all. Law, politics, and justice - expertly unpacked on Double Jeopardy. ----- Covering the critical intersections of law and politics in the UK with expert commentary on high-profile legal cases, political controversies, prisons and sentencing, human rights law, current political events and the shifting landscape of justice and democracy. With in-depth discussions and influential guests, Double Jeopardy is the podcast that uncovers the forces shaping Britain's legal and political future. What happens when law and politics collide? How do politics shape the law - and when does the law push back? What happens when judicial independence is tested, human rights come under attack, or freedom of expression is challenged? And who really holds power in Britain's legal and political system? Get answers to questions like these weekly on Wednesdays at 6am GMT. Double Jeopardy is presented by Ken Macdonald KC, former Director of Public Prosecutions, and Tim Owen KC, as they break down the legal and political issues in Britain. She shares her own journey through litigation and how it inspired her to help others facing similar struggles. Dr. Pensa helps refine doctors' mindset during litigation, providing insightful guidelines to help defend themselves with confidence and clarity during depositions and trials. She recommends two goals for everyone in deposition; one is to accept the situation. Letting go of the emotions rather than argue over reality. At best grief, but don't suffer guilt. Secondly, that physicians be good defendants for themselves. She stresses that the physician's overall objective is to get the jury into their thought process, since they are not medical practitioners themselves. She believes that by supporting each other and advocating for systemic change, physicians can not only survive litigation but grow stronger through it. She also encourages doctors to push back against the unrealistic expectation of perfection in medicine, reminding them that they're humans. BIODr. Gita S. In every country which has legalised euthanasia, organ donation following euthanasia has also been legalised eventually. In Canada, organ removal was integrated to the euthanasia practice from the very start. The utilitarian case for it is overwhelming logical - if it is ethical to allow doctors to end a patient's life to relieve their suffering, then giving that patient the opportunity to save other lives naturally follows. This seminar will explore how organ donation euthanasia has grown, especially in Belgium and Canada, consider the arguments put forward for it and offer a biblical Christian response.  Dr Trevor Stammers was Editor of The New Bioethics journal. Recorded on 26 January 2023 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a webinar and Q&A with Dr Trevor Stammers. Rates for deceased donations greatly vary across the world but organ transplantation heavily depends on them and virtually exclusively so for vital organs such as the heart. But this raises many ethical questions about the nature of death. Can the dead be harmed? Who should give consent for donation when the wishes of the deceased are unclear? Should the 'dead donor rule' be abandoned as some suggest? These and other questions will be explored from a Christian perspective. Dr Trevor Stammers is Editor of The New Bioethics journal. He was formerly Associate Professor of Bioethics and Medical Law at St Mary's University, UK, and was a family doctor for 27 years before going into academia. His latest book on the ethics of organ donation (written with Calum MacKellar) is The Ethics of Generating Posthumans.

How does everyday medical practice get interpreted in the courtroom? In cases of child protection, do everyday decisions made in a resource-limited NHS stand up to cross-examination? Does the duty of care in hospital also extend to collecting evidence, and are the obligations of the doctor looking after a child different to the obligations of the expert commenting on them in retrospect? Last summer, the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, reigniting a fifty-year abortion debate once thought settled in the Western world. Though disguised by coverage of judges and commentators alike, the crux of the debate remains deeply philosophical: what is the moral value of a foetus? Is it a human being? Is it a person? To answer these questions, Todd Horton, law graduate from Trinity College, will be interviewing Professor Jonathan Herring, a pre-eminent exponent of the ‘relational' conception of personhood, and author of the leading textbook on Medical Law.

Consciousness is a slippery thing and hard to define. We are not talking about medical ‘levels of consciousness' but the actual phenomenon of what it is to be a conscious person. Descartes famously proposed a dualism where the mind is a distinct ‘substance' from the body, even if intimately interacting with it. Indeed, since Descartes philosophers have struggled to explain how something purely physical could have free-will, emotions, sensations and personhood. This webinar hopes to discuss what this means for Christian clinicians who know that we, and our patients, are more than just bodies but are also souls. Dr Antony Latham Dr Antony is a retired GP, originally from Dublin, now living on the Isle of Harris in Scotland. He has worked in Kenya and then, with his family, as a missionary in Tanzania prior to general practice in the Western Isles of Scotland. He has had an interest in philosophy of mind and consciousness for many years and wrote a book on this subject: ‘The Enigma of Consciousness. Reclaiming the Soul'. He has an MA in Bioethics and Medical Law and chairs the Scottish Council on Human Bioethics.

Recorded on 7 July 2022 for ICMDA Webinars. Dr Peter Saunders chairs a discussion with Dr Trevor Stammers. Mitochondrial replacement techniques were legalised in the UK in 2015 and more recently in Australia in March 2022, ostensibly as a way to enable mothers with affected mitochondria to have genetically related children without fear of passing onto them the risk of severe mitochondrial diseases. The webinar will explain these techniques, explore the controversies surrounding their legalisation and use and critique the capture of language in promoting them to the public. It will raise questions about why they might be being promoted and whether they really work. Finally, we consider if they are ethical and explore some scriptural reflections on their use. Dr Trevor Stammers is Editor of The New Bioethics journal. He was formerly Associate Professor of Bioethics and Medical Law at St Mary's University and was a family doctor for 27 years before going into academia. With over 100 million record sales, an Academy Award, an Emmy, a Grammy, three Golden Globes and an award from The Council of Fashion Designers of America, very few artists have a catalogue that matches the iconic Cher. A new musical, touring the UK - “The Cher Show” - tells the story of the Goddess of Pop's meteoric rise to fame. The director and choreographer behind the show are two Strictly Come Dancing legends - Arlene Phillips and Oti Mabuse. They both join Emma to discuss the new show and their own careers. In August 2018, Kylie Moore-Gilbert, an Australian-British academic travelled to Iran to attend a seminar and conduct academic research. It was her first visit to the country. At Tehran airport on her way back home to Australia, she was arrested by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Accused of espionage, she was imprisoned and later convicted and given a ten year sentence. She spent over two years in prison, half of it in solitary confinement. She was released in November 2020 as part of a prisoner exchange deal negotiated by the Australian government. She's written about those 804 days, in a new book The Uncaged Sky, and speaks to Emma from Melbourne. The Chancellor Rishi Sunak, his wife Akshata Murty and their finances have been in the headlines for several days now. Emma gets the latest from the woman behind the story, Economics Editor for the Independent Anna Isaac. Anna broke the news that Ms Murty was a 'non-domicile' resident - meaning she doesn't have to pay tax to the UK authorities on any income that she earns outside Britain, something that is entirely legal. 48 hours after the story broke last Wednesday, Ms Murty announced that she would pay UK taxes on her worldwide income. The actor Sienna Miller has said she took the step of freezing some eggs at 40, following the pressure she felt to have more children. Professor Imogen Goold has been looking into how women make decisions to delay fertility including in this way – and she questions the assumption often made in the media and in medicine that women are not properly informed, and make poor decisions about how long they can wait to have children. Imogen joins Emma to discuss, ahead of a lecture she is giving at Gresham College called Freezing Eggs and Delaying Fertility: Law, Ethics and Society, at 1pm on Monday 11 April. It can be viewed online for free. Professor Imogen Goold is Visiting Professor of Medical Law at Gresham College, and Professor of Medical Law at Oxford University.

Rachel and Simon speak with prolific novelist Alexander McCall Smith. Alexander was a professor of Medical Law, before turning his hand to writing fiction. His first book, “The White Hippo”, a children's title, was published in 1980. But it wasn't until the appearance of the highly successful “The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency” series that Alexander became a household name. The series has now sold over twenty million copies in English alone. Alexander's various series of books have been translated into forty-six languages. Others include the “44 Scotland Street” novels and the Isabel Dalhousie books. Recently, he launched the Ulf Varg series of ‘Scandi blanc' novels set in Sweden. Alexander talked to us about his rapid writing pace, the moral questions of detective novels and the idea of cultural appropriation. Today on The Food Podcast Lindsay sits down with Alexander McCall Smith, Scottish writer and Emeritus Professor of Medical Law at the University of Edinburgh. What begins as as a conversation on his use of tea in writing becomes a deep dive into tea etiquette, kindness and the importance of ritual. Of course the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency is discussed; tea breaks are at the heart of detection, I'm sure Mma Ramotswe would say. Meditation is also woven in, along with the importance of packing tea (and a tea pot) when traveling. So put the kettle on, curl up, and have a listen. But remember to be polite, unless of course you switch to coffee.  Many thanks for listening.  Lindsay Cameron Wilson Host of

Kirsty Young's castaway is the Olympian and rower, Dame Katherine Grainger. A six-time rowing World Champion across a variety of classes, her silver medal at Rio in 2016 made her the most successful female British Olympic athlete ever, having won medals in five consecutive games.Born in Glasgow in 1975, her parents were teachers. At school she earned a black belt in karate, and it wasn't until she went to Edinburgh University that her passion for rowing was truly ignited. Winning silver medals at the Sydney, Athens and Beijing Olympics, Katherine finally ceased to be the sport's eternal bridesmaid when, with her partner Anna Watkins, she won gold in the Double Sculls at the 2012 London Olympics. After two years away from the sport, Katherine returned in 2014, to win her fourth silver and fifth overall Olympic medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics with her new partner, Vicky Thornley.Alongside her sporting achievements, she gained an Honours degree in Law from Edinburgh, a Masters in Medical Law from Glasgow University and was awarded a PhD in Homicide Sentencing from King's College London in 2013. She was made the fourth Chancellor of Oxford Brookes University in 2015 and became a Dame in the 2017 New Year Honours.Producer: Cathy Drysdale.
