I would have to like jettison straight out, I've really been looking forward to this. It's so good to see1600:02:57.690 --> 00:03:06.840Terry Wildemann: Well, the feeling is mutual and it is great to see you and I'm honored to have you on my podcast I truly am because1700:03:07.770 --> 00:03:20.370Terry Wildemann: I love your message so much and it needs to be heard your expertise, your experiences, your stories are so juicy and powerful that quite frankly1800:03:20.820 --> 00:03:42.780Terry Wildemann: I want to share them with my audience. So I know that you began as a researcher and a teacher at a university. And I'm curious. How did you leap from opening tense it from being a professor to opening 10 successful businesses that that's that's quite the launch1900:03:42.990 --> 00:03:56.580Wendy Lipton-Dibner: It is. It's, I love the question because it's one of my favorite stories and it is what started this. And one of the things that you say so beautifully, you know, in terms of of trusting your intuition and listening.2000:03:57.060 --> 00:04:06.870Wendy Lipton-Dibner: To what you're being told. Right. I never wanted to be a researcher, that was never my goal is, you know, I wanted to be with Barbra Streisand. I mean, there was2100:04:07.260 --> 00:04:19.290Wendy Lipton-Dibner: No zero plan to be a teacher or researcher, I went to graduate school because my family told me to which is a boring story that led to a really exciting adventure. Right.2200:04:20.010 --> 00:04:31.590Wendy Lipton-Dibner: So in the middle of presenting a research report, I got recruited to do this research study straight out of grad school, which was a gift.2300:04:32.190 --> 00:04:42.090Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And I left and took this position teaching and doing research. And one of the research studies that I was putting in charge of2400:04:42.540 --> 00:04:57.930Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Was to evaluate a new alcoholism. Treatment Center at a time when this was brand new. Alright, so, so we're going to date ourselves here, right. So this was back in the early 80s.2500:04:58.650 --> 00:05:16.530Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And in that time, people were just starting to ask questions like, is alcoholism, a disease or is it a social problem. So this hospital had developed a treatment that they wanted evaluated and that's what I was directed to do2600:05:17.550 --> 00:05:22.320Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Now three years into the study, we get a letter from the United States Senate.2700:05:23.040 --> 00:05:34.860Wendy Lipton-Dibner: That they too are looking at alcoholism and many other health issues to determine whether or not their diseases because and here's the political piece.2800:05:35.340 --> 00:05:46.860Wendy Lipton-Dibner: If they are, then the next question that Congress needed to decide was should it be covered by something new, everybody was talking about called health insurance.2900:05:48.180 --> 00:05:52.890Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Right. So we go back a ways. This was in the early days of the HMO right3000:05:54.060 --> 00:06:11.790Wendy Lipton-Dibner: So we were asked to come and present the report. And so in that moment on for the next six months, every single day six hospital attorneys crammed into my tiny little eight by eight cubicle to watch what I was doing.3100:06:12.840 --> 00:06:20.130Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And everything I wrote down, they would look at and they would raise their eyebrows and they'd say,3200:06:20.610 --> 00:06:28.140Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Maybe you could just see it this way or, you know, I think you should put a comma there, or do you really have to include that number.3300:06:29.070 --> 00:06:36.780Wendy Lipton-Dibner: One of the things we were taught in graduate school, Terry. And I know you know if you talk to the data enough. They'll confess to anything.3400:06:37.680 --> 00:06:50.520Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And what the attorneys were doing in their own really logical and not illegal way was getting me to torture the data so that it would present the hospital in a better light.3500:06:51.720 --> 00:06:51.870Terry Wildemann: And3600:06:52.140 --> 00:07:10.380Wendy Lipton-Dibner: It wasn't illegal. It wasn't ethical from my, like, you know, 21 year old perspective. Right. Um. So long story short, we end up in Washington, DC, ready to present this report.3700:07:11.190 --> 00:07:19.920Wendy Lipton-Dibner: I had worked in and worked it and I'm the morning I'm supposed to start presenting I opened my book and it's not the report I had written3800:07:20.880 --> 00:07:22.560Wendy Lipton-Dibner: It's the one they had3900:07:22.770 --> 00:07:29.520Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Altered at the last minute to make sure all the T's were crossed and I's are dotted4000:07:30.270 --> 00:07:44.880Wendy Lipton-Dibner: But I didn't recognize it and I didn't know what would come when I turned the page and it scared me. I was afraid to stand in front of the Senate and say things that I wasn't sure were true.4100:07:45.660 --> 00:07:56.730Wendy Lipton-Dibner: If none of understand none of it was alive, but I got frightened and so instead of just forging forward and reading it. I had to make a decision in that moment.4200:07:58.260 --> 00:08:09.750Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And it's a decision. I think that a lot of entrepreneurs make at some point in our career we're faced with a moment where we have to decide what we do next.4300:08:11.340 --> 00:08:29.490Wendy Lipton-Dibner: The question I was asking myself, is do I speak what I know, or do I read this and I just, you know, I heard this voice in my head. That was about trusting myself about following integrity.4400:08:30.510 --> 00:08:40.530Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And trusting the data. So I opened my mouth and I just started to talk about this study. I mean, nobody knew it better than me. Right. I was managing the darn thing.4500:08:41.070 --> 00:08:54.330Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And as soon as I went off script. My boss on one side of me and the hospital director on the other kind of grabbed me and all the male attorneys that were behind me, you could hear their breathing change.4600:08:55.110 --> 00:09:06.390Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And I got scared. Again, but I couldn't stop. I couldn't stop. And so I forged ahead and the long and short of this is that by the time we finished.4700:09:06.660 --> 00:09:16.200Wendy Lipton-Dibner: The senators made a decision that in fact what the hospital was doing was awesome. And what we had found was life changing.4800:09:16.530 --> 00:09:28.920Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And they made a decision that alcoholism is a disease and because of that millions of people have been served through their insurance and medical intervention ever since. But there's no way I could have known that.4900:09:30.150 --> 00:09:38.580Wendy Lipton-Dibner: What I learned that day was two really important lessons that I've carried with me that launched it all for me one.5000:09:39.270 --> 00:09:54.570Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Is that I really have to know that what I do makes an impact and that one woman standing there making an ethical decision and doing what she believes is right.5100:09:55.050 --> 00:10:10.650Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Can go on to make a massive impact in the world that I knew. On that day. The other thing I learned was I couldn't be an employee. I just couldn't follow other people's roles. So I went back to the university I quit my job.5200:10:11.790 --> 00:10:25.320Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And that night, my hairdresser came to my home to do my hair and she brought a bottle of wine to celebrate the fact that I had quit. Now, you have to understand directing and alcoholism study for three years. I hadn't had a sip of anything.5300:10:26.310 --> 00:10:43.890Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And so about one glass in and I was ready to roll. And I came up with an idea that she and I should open a hairdressing salon and show the world that you could make more money by focusing on impact than by focusing on money.5400:10:45.840 --> 00:10:58.290Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Stayed up all night wrote a one page proposal walked into a bank. The next day, and told them my intention was to open a social laboratory to prove that business could be more effective if we stop thinking about money.5500:10:58.770 --> 00:11:08.940Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And put all of our focus on to making a measurable difference in people's lives and they were intrigued. They wrote me a check for $50,000 which at the time was a fortune.5600:11:10.020 --> 00:11:12.690Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And then I opened my first business and never looked back.5700:11:15.060 --> 00:11:17.670Terry Wildemann: Thank you for sharing such an amazing story.5800:11:17.760 --> 00:11:30.750Terry Wildemann: You've got an emotion is huge because that has been we share the mantra people first put service. First, the rest is going to flow.5900:11:31.710 --> 00:11:41.550Terry Wildemann: verity comes after you focus on service from the heart, not from here, from the heart rate. Absolutely. So6000:11:42.450 --> 00:12:01.320Terry Wildemann: Congratulations, because that really is a phenomenal, phenomenal accomplishment and you trusted your intuition, you trusted you're wiser, what I call my your wise inner guidance system wake and the people behind you taught those people your bosses and the lawyers and lesson.6100:12:03.600 --> 00:12:08.340Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And I did never, never hired girl from Manhattan. That's when I talk to you.6200:12:08.910 --> 00:12:18.840Terry Wildemann: I love it, I love it. Well, you know, one of the things that I know about you is done a retelling you know because you're going to prove a way6300:12:19.290 --> 00:12:38.190Terry Wildemann: Of doing things and I love the story of your second business. It's a brilliant story and the day you opened your door was black Monday, October 1987. It was the day the stock market crashed.6400:12:38.310 --> 00:12:38.610Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Right.6500:12:38.670 --> 00:12:52.980Terry Wildemann: We lost everything you made from the sale of your first business right and your target market for this next business had just lost all of their money to and all the odds, basically we're against you again.6600:12:53.880 --> 00:13:01.560Terry Wildemann: You know, if you follow your gut. Don't tell me now. That's why I love you so much, because we had the same philosophy.6700:13:01.860 --> 00:13:10.140Terry Wildemann: Right. One month later, your new business was up flourishing run running and you were making thousands a week.6800:13:10.530 --> 00:13:21.570Terry Wildemann: Yeah, how did you do it, especially appropriate message during this very challenging episode in humanity.6900:13:21.810 --> 00:13:42.300Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Exactly right. Exactly right. So please, you guys, everybody. Listen to this, because it was so simple and I made a lot of money from the sale of my first business and got a phone call on that day as I was hanging my shingle out my door right7000:13:43.410 --> 00:13:47.430Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Sorry, Wendy. I don't have to tell you this, your account is drained.7100:13:52.710 --> 00:13:56.760Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And then I of course quick turned on TV found out what was going on.7200:13:57.780 --> 00:14:04.440Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And in that moment. Again, I had a decision to make. But I REMEMBERED WHAT IT HAPPENED AT THE SENATE.7300:14:05.520 --> 00:14:12.660Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And I knew that the reason we had done so well in that first business which we had done really well.7400:14:13.920 --> 00:14:34.800Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Was because I had made a decision to focus on impact. And so, standing there with all of these people hanging out windows, frankly, and like really upset, was I asked one question Terry, the simple questions. Okay, fine. Who needs me the most today.7500:14:37.140 --> 00:14:46.830Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And that's the question we all have to answer right now. Who needs me the most today. For me, the answer was stockbrokers7600:14:47.370 --> 00:15:02.520Wendy Lipton-Dibner: I mean, boo more than anyone else in that moment was carrying the weight of the world on their shoulders were all of these brokers who were having to call their clients just like mine had just called me and said, You're broke7700:15:04.350 --> 00:15:12.600Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Have fun. I don't know what to tell you. Right, so I just went downtown and I started hopping from brokerage firm to brokerage firm to brokerage firm.7800:15:12.960 --> 00:15:23.370Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Offering my services being there for them taking care of them and offering free stress management seminars free whatever I could give them seminars.7900:15:23.820 --> 00:15:37.800Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And little by little, all of a sudden they all started to turn around their profits went through the roof during the worst, worst crisis since the Great Depression at the time.8000:15:38.250 --> 00:15:47.160Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And it was all because I was teaching them what I had done in my first business all the strategies we had created and made up along the way.8100:15:47.850 --> 00:15:58.530Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Putting people first and making sure that we make a difference. The question that we all need to be asking right now is, who needs me the most today and then go do something about it.8200:16:00.210 --> 00:16:04.590Terry Wildemann: That is so simple, so powerful and so bring8300:16:06.630 --> 00:16:10.890Terry Wildemann: So, and that's really what it is simple and powerful.8400:16:11.760 --> 00:16:22.860Terry Wildemann: We do go into fear don't mean when in challenging times we go into fear. How do I make money, how am I going to feed my family. How am I going to put food on the table. My business just just crashed. What am I going to do8500:16:23.280 --> 00:16:43.740Terry Wildemann: You know, so we we live in that fear and as you know and I know because we you know we both teach stress management, it's it builds. If you don't shift and you get consumed in the fear, however, so many of us are we lose our power we give our power away to fear.8600:16:45.630 --> 00:17:00.840Terry Wildemann: And if we choose. And that's a big word there to shift and pivot and look for blue sky out of service magic happens. And that's what you just proved8700:17:02.010 --> 00:17:08.100Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Yeah, you know what, what I learned is that there is tremendous power in our fear.8800:17:09.390 --> 00:17:13.980Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And the secret for me has been to use it effectively.8900:17:14.430 --> 00:17:18.810Wendy Lipton-Dibner: So rather than try and make myself, stop being scared.9000:17:19.320 --> 00:17:26.220Wendy Lipton-Dibner: I say, Okay, fine. I'm going to take this power that I feel I mean, my gosh, there's a whole lot of energy. Right.9100:17:26.790 --> 00:17:35.580Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And say how can I use this for good. How can I help someone using all this energy that's generated in my body because I'm like, so you know9200:17:36.210 --> 00:17:52.830Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And pull them all of a sudden, it's a complete realignment of all that energy that ultimately becomes powerful forward movement that makes a massive difference in the world in whatever way is necessary at that time.9300:17:54.990 --> 00:18:08.700Terry Wildemann: And in doing that, you are impacting others in a very powerful way. So you are considered the world's leading authority on impact strategy and and9400:18:09.330 --> 00:18:22.890Terry Wildemann: Ethical influence. And that's something that I know for myself, which is really well, why don't you on the show so much because we share so many of the same values and you know people are tired of hearing about me. They get me to come from somebody else.9500:18:24.090 --> 00:18:34.050Terry Wildemann: Would become talking heads and having you share the same values, it just warms my heart. So I really want to hear from you, Wendy.9600:18:35.340 --> 00:18:46.800Terry Wildemann: What, in your words and your world is impact strategy and how does it thread. How do you thread the needle to connect it to ethical influence9700:18:46.920 --> 00:19:07.050Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Right. So that's the perfect question. The, the, the simple truth is that I have never met anybody that doesn't want to make a difference in somebody's life. I mean, this is not new. Right. What is new or at least was for me when I started was, how do you do that in a business setting.9800:19:08.520 --> 00:19:20.580Wendy Lipton-Dibner: The I changed a whole tactic in my head that ultimately became the first business which is to look at impact in a slightly different way. You know,9900:19:21.210 --> 00:19:29.760Wendy Lipton-Dibner: To in these days. Everybody uses the word impact, right, whether you're looking at whether or whether you're looking at making a difference impact is is way over us kind of like10000:19:29.970 --> 00:19:34.320Wendy Lipton-Dibner: We got into saying love for everything. And then we forgot what we meant with it right10100:19:34.740 --> 00:19:48.150Wendy Lipton-Dibner: So for me, impact is the measurable difference we make in people's lives as the direct result of contact with us with our team with our message with our marketing with our products and our services if10200:19:48.630 --> 00:20:00.990Wendy Lipton-Dibner: In business, every single aspect of what we do, isn't strategically designed to make a measurable difference, then I don't do it.10300:20:01.710 --> 00:20:13.650Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And my clients over the years, looked at, frankly, how I had made all this money and my first business so quickly they hired me to make money. They did not hire me to make a difference.10400:20:14.670 --> 00:20:20.340Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Right. It's like yours, Terry. They hire you. Because they want their business to get better.10500:20:20.790 --> 00:20:29.700Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Your strategy, your way of thinking you're connecting people with their energy and their angels. That's your strategy and your tactic.10600:20:30.060 --> 00:20:39.390Wendy Lipton-Dibner: But at the end of the day, most of them first come to you because they want their business to be more successful. So, that was me. Exactly right. Right. So my strategy.10700:20:39.930 --> 00:20:47.580Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Was made up because there was no strategy for this. Nobody had ever talked about this back then.10800:20:48.090 --> 00:20:59.760Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Which is probably how I came became the world's leading authority because nobody had done this at the end of the day what I was looking for was what does science, social science right10900:21:00.390 --> 00:21:11.640Wendy Lipton-Dibner: sociology, psychology, anthropology and neuro psychology and biology and all of these allergies. Right. What did I learn in grad school, but I can actually use11000:21:12.720 --> 00:21:18.270Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And I looked at these things every day. And I said, What can we learn from science.11100:21:19.320 --> 00:21:43.980Wendy Lipton-Dibner: About why people do what they do about what moves, some of them to take a certain action and not take another action and can we use that information in a way that actually ethically moves people to let themselves have everything they really want11200:21:45.510 --> 00:21:49.020Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And if we can do that consciously11300:21:50.190 --> 00:21:56.670Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Consistently and measure it, then people will move themselves to action.11400:21:57.750 --> 00:22:13.200Wendy Lipton-Dibner: So the connection between being focused on impact and creating strategies that would ethically move people to action was all about the simple truth that we can't make a difference in people's lives if they're not willing to change.11500:22:14.970 --> 00:22:27.750Wendy Lipton-Dibner: So I made a decision that it isn't our job to tell people what they should do or should want right not going, they're not taking that responsibility. I'm not their mom.11600:22:29.220 --> 00:22:33.480Wendy Lipton-Dibner: But if I can find a way to help them get what they want.11700:22:34.530 --> 00:22:47.970Wendy Lipton-Dibner: That's everything. So that's where the path between making an impact and ethically influencing people to take that path come together and everybody wins. As a result,11800:22:49.050 --> 00:23:04.560Terry Wildemann: And it's just phenomenal absolutely phenomenal and I have seen you. I have observed I have witnessed. I have seen a shift and entire room of people11900:23:06.150 --> 00:23:13.860Terry Wildemann: With your phenomenal influence and that's why I love you so much, because you are so blessed and authentic.12000:23:14.160 --> 00:23:15.660Terry Wildemann: And that's the key. Isn't it12100:23:15.900 --> 00:23:20.160Terry Wildemann: It's about being authentic and in integrity with who we are as people.12200:23:22.110 --> 00:23:23.250Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And as professionals.12300:23:23.580 --> 00:23:24.780Terry Wildemann: And as professionals.12400:23:24.900 --> 00:23:39.240Wendy Lipton-Dibner: I think that's something we see a lot is that we may be fully authentic with our friends and family. But then we get into a work environment or professional environment, speaking on stages, zoom, whatever. And the next thing we know we're putting on somebody, we're not12500:23:40.410 --> 00:23:40.980Terry Wildemann: You know,12600:23:42.810 --> 00:23:45.540Terry Wildemann: The imposter syndrome is huge in our industry.12700:23:45.960 --> 00:24:11.850Terry Wildemann: And okay and I find sometimes that the imposter syndrome with some of our colleagues runs really deep because of a lack of integrity and authenticity an authenticity and fear of really tapping into who they are. Instead of who they want to be.12800:24:12.180 --> 00:24:20.940Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Yeah yeah and a driving need to capitalize on so many people who need help.12900:24:21.780 --> 00:24:32.160Terry Wildemann: Yes. And that really is a key piece capitalizing on people who need help. So where's the authenticity. Is it coming from here or is it coming from here, because when they13000:24:32.790 --> 00:24:36.420Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Actually, I think it's on the other side of their body. But don't get me started.13100:24:40.080 --> 00:24:40.650Terry Wildemann: Got it.13200:24:41.940 --> 00:24:43.320Terry Wildemann: Yeah, okay.13300:24:45.330 --> 00:24:46.800Wendy Lipton-Dibner: We'll just leave it at that. I think13400:24:47.790 --> 00:24:50.280Wendy Lipton-Dibner: To say, yeah, it's, it's13500:24:50.280 --> 00:24:54.240Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Now I am not happy with a lot of what goes on, as you know,13600:24:54.780 --> 00:24:58.860Terry Wildemann: Yeah, and I feel the same. It's I just see13700:25:00.180 --> 00:25:08.880Terry Wildemann: It's time for those of us who are really called or who are being called into service from the heart and really want to make a difference to rise.13800:25:09.240 --> 00:25:22.110Terry Wildemann: Elevate ourselves and be visible in ways we've never been visible before so that we can help those who want our services who, you know, who are we to play small13900:25:23.280 --> 00:25:29.970Terry Wildemann: When our skill sets and who we are, we are made to help so many other people14000:25:31.980 --> 00:25:32.220Terry Wildemann: And14100:25:32.460 --> 00:25:33.330Wendy Lipton-Dibner: The day14200:25:34.440 --> 00:25:37.650Wendy Lipton-Dibner: It's been time for really long time.14300:25:37.920 --> 00:25:49.380Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Yes, people who were, we were playing about just a couple of minutes ago. Don't get to rise. When people like you rise up.14400:25:50.460 --> 00:26:11.820Wendy Lipton-Dibner: So the more that you shine Terry, the less space there is for people who are trying to take advantage of others. So you just keep doing this girl because the more you do, the less empty holes will get filled by people who aren't as ethical as we'd like them to be.14500:26:13.350 --> 00:26:14.880Terry Wildemann: And what a great way14600:26:15.990 --> 00:26:22.650Terry Wildemann: For you to share your closing words, what is the best piece of advice that you have for our audience.14700:26:24.000 --> 00:26:36.630Wendy Lipton-Dibner: It's twofold. One of courses in business is to focus on impact and move people to action, because when you do those two things. You get to help the people that most need you.14800:26:37.830 --> 00:26:40.800Wendy Lipton-Dibner: But the personal pieces is deeper14900:26:42.540 --> 00:26:44.040Wendy Lipton-Dibner: One of the things I learned15000:26:45.180 --> 00:26:49.110Wendy Lipton-Dibner: The hard way by watching my mom passed away, far too young.15100:26:50.460 --> 00:26:55.860Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Is that life is far too short to settle for less than we truly want15200:26:57.510 --> 00:27:14.640Wendy Lipton-Dibner: That's why we need to go up every single morning look in the mirror and just ask ourselves, you know, are you making the impact you want to be making right if you're not making the impact that you want to be making then you're settling15300:27:16.830 --> 00:27:28.680Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Bottom line, whether it's go down in the kitchen and make your impact or whether it's go to school or whether it's put yourselves in front of your team and say, Hey, guys.15400:27:29.010 --> 00:27:39.840Wendy Lipton-Dibner: We need to do something more powerful. We need to make a greater difference in this department in this department in this department. Talk to me. How do we do it.15500:27:40.980 --> 00:27:47.940Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Go out there every single day and make an impact and don't settle for less than you truly want in your business or your life.15600:27:50.070 --> 00:27:54.060Terry Wildemann: Thank you for such a beautiful, beautiful advice.15700:27:56.160 --> 00:27:58.020Terry Wildemann: So how can people find you, Wendy.15800:27:58.680 --> 00:27:59.400Wendy Lipton-Dibner: I'm everywhere.15900:28:02.460 --> 00:28:14.430Wendy Lipton-Dibner: Everywhere. I'm on Twitter. I'm impact expert. That's an easy way to find me. Um, otherwise it's Wendy Lipton dinner, which seemed like a good idea at the time. And and and16000:28:15.120 --> 00:28:23.220Wendy Lipton-Dibner: That hyphen thing, but there is a hyphen between Lipton and diviner because I'm blessed to be married to who I think is the most wonderful man in the world.16100:28:24.570 --> 00:28:36.990Wendy Lipton-Dibner: And he is very special. I'm so glad you guys got to meet. So yeah, when he looked in diviner Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, um, and, and the action movement is free videos, nothing's being sold16200:28:37.410 --> 00:28:44.580Wendy Lipton-Dibner: So you're welcome to go there and get some information on how to make a greater impact and have fun with it.16300:28:45.180 --> 00:28:54.090Terry Wildemann: And that is the free gift. Cary Krosinsky is the Co-founder of the Sustainable Finance Institute, Carbon Tracker and Real Impact Tracker, as well as a lecturer at Yale School of Management. He is the author of seven books including Sustainable Investing: Revolutions in Theory and Practice and his seventh book will look at Modern China, innovation, sustainable finance and cooperation. Cary is also an advisor to Brown University’s Sustainable Investment Fund, Deep Green Metals Inc, and principal at NPV Associates. Highlights: Being selective with experiments and ruthless with what is working and what is not Stock exchanges haven’t been providing much push for impact reporting Creating a culture of sustainable and impact investing It is essential we collaborate to solve problems together It feels like a positive to encourage foreign investment into China as foreign investors have a say over conditions for the capital deployment Ecological economics’s attempt to put prices on externalities shows that there is little use in measuring carbon footprint of a portfolio because its ultimately not very impactful What is really needed is dynamic changes in corporate strategy, investment strategies and policy and supportive policies From assessing strategies to creating a certification for financial institution at Real Impact Tracker Cary is focusing on advising companies to improve their dual sustainability finance track Some SDGs are not directly investable. We need to segment which SDGs are investable and non investable, and of the investable SDGs into the direct and indirectly investable Impact measure needs to be done at a systems level as well as a strategy level. “Finance without sustainability is a recipe for environmental and social disaster” “Sustainable investing without a business case is philanthropy” We need to run 100 or more different strategies in parallel at scale One trillion dollars of impact vs $500 trillion of tradeable assets Cary Krosinsky's personal path to impact and passion for raising awareness through education Time Stamp: [06:00] What is impact investing? Sarah Olivieri helps businesses get organized and get going! Whether you are a nonprofit, a for-profit, or just really interested in building better businesses, Sarah Olivieri has something you are going to enjoy in this podcast. As she worked with numerous nonprofits, she realized that they are often well-meaning but slightly disorganized. Don’t misread me here. These are wonderful organizations. The leadership and their staff are not dysfunctional but just in need of a little more focus, structure and process tools for growing their passion and their purpose. Sarah created those tools and they are transforming the organizations with which she works. We share her approach so you can think about your own organization. Maybe you too need to see it with fresh eyes. Enjoy this podcast, learn and share! Most nonprofits are organized with a lot of heart, which is to say, are relatively disorganized. When they do manage to get “organized," silos often form, with invisible walls hampering communication and collaboration between departments, or between administration and non-administration. There can also be entire functions that are missing, resulting in stagnated growth and diminished impact. Without the right kind of organizational structure, nonprofits are bound to feel overwhelmed as they struggle with delegation and wearing too many hats. What to do? Call Sarah Olivieri! Is your nonprofit stuck in the growth process? Sarah can fix that. The founder of PivotGround, Sarah Olivieri is a nonprofit strategist with a passion for helping human-service nonprofits increase capacity, deliver better programming, attract more funding, and best of all, make the world a better place. Resulting from her many years working with nonprofits, Sarah has created a clear process for Executive Directors to not only stay focused on moving the organization forward but to overcome obstacles which naturally arise from growth. Called the Impact Method™, Sarah's proprietary process breaks down a nonprofit's big, audacious goals into clear, easy-to-understand components. Designed to unlock an organization's true capacity and harness it to its full potential, the Impact Method enables everyone involved in an organization, from employees to donors to volunteers, to be energized, focused and pursuing the same bold strategy. Sarah follows that up with the Impact Strategy™ and Continuous Action Plan™, so nonprofits can make clear progress and know exactly what to focus on next. At SAMC, we tell our clients they need to know where they're going and have a plan for how they're going to get there. Helping them develop that plan is part of the work we do to help them drive change. Sounds like Sarah and us are on the same page! Some background on Sarah Sarah Olivieri has over 15 years of nonprofit leadership. Notably, she co-founded the Open Center for Autism and was Executive Director of the Helping Children of War Foundation. There have been numerous changes in the food retail business in the last few years and far more ways to go grocery shopping than there ever have been before. The grocery store chain Kroger, which is the 2nd largest general retailer in the country, has also been putting some of its focus on helping people in need with some innovative programs of its own. We’re joined by Eric Halverson, Manager of Corporate Affairs for the Kroger Company's Central Division. From weekend barbecues, to ballgames to ‘Taco Tuesday,’ eating meet goes hand-in-hand with American life. But when we consider the environmental impact of eating meat, we might consider giving it up - or at least eating less of it. Impossible Foods produces ‘meat made from plants,’ which does sound impossible indeed. To explain more about it we’re talking with Rebekah Moses, Senior Manager of Impact Strategy for Impossible Foods.
What do you think of when you hear the term, “Broader Impacts?” Have you ever received a brief and definitive explanation of the term? To remove all confusion and cut to the heart of what this term means is the Broader Impacts Guy himself, Dr. Michael Thompson. Dr. Thompson is currently on the Senior Staff of the Office of the Vice President for Research and the Founding Director of the Broader Impacts in Research organization at the University of Oklahoma. Dr. Thompson specializes in Impact Strategy, Professional Faculty Development, Broader Impact Research, Proposal Development, Social Entrepreneurship, and much more. You don’t want to miss a minute of this episode as Dr. Thompson provides his helpful take on the definition of Broader Impacts and as he reveals some valuable communication tips. What You’ll Hear On This Episode of When Science Speaks [1:10] Mark welcomes his guest, Dr. Michael Thompson. Connect with Dr. Michael Thompson Dr. Thompson on LinkedIn Dr. Thompson on Facebook Dr. Thompson’s website Resources & People Mentioned The Fundamentals of Logic National Science Foundation What is “Broader Impacts?” The term, “Broader Impacts” is defined by the National Science Foundation (NSF) as “...the potential to benefit society and contribute to the achievement of specific, desired societal outcomes.” The NSF further clarified its thinking on broader impacts in 2011 when it issued a report stating that broader impacts “may be accomplished through the research itself, through activities that are directly related to specific research projects, or through activities that are directly supported by, but are complementary to, the project” and that all broader impacts activities must be meaningfully assessed and evaluated. Dr. Michael Thompson went even more in-depth with his explanation of this term, going beyond what NSF has defined by reaching back to pre-modern America. Dr. Thompson says that the Choctaw Nation has a name for broader impacts called “I’yyi Kowa.” As a concept and practice, it meant that this service needed to ensure beneficial stability or “social balance” and advancement of their society. Communication Tips It is no coincidence that most people fear public speaking more than any other situation, getting up to speak in front of others is nerve-wracking. What if there was a way to midgate those fears and hone your ability to communicate to your audience? Most professionals don’t have a problem with the content of their communication, it often comes down to delivery or adjusting their approach to their audience. Dr. Michael Thompson was gracious enough to reveal his helpful tips for communicating to an audience that is new to your topic or subject matter. Be observant. Watch other communicators. Read and research communication techniques. Listen to yourself talk. Eliminate filler words (uh, um, and). Learn how to think while you are talking. Read something that makes you think before you speak. Practice speaking over and over. Be prepared for the unexpected. These are just a few of the powerful insights that Dr. Thompson shares on this episode.
