Send us a textOn this weeks episode, we discuss an LP by John Wesley Harding (né Wesley Stace), 1996's John Wesley Harding's New Deal. After releasing two EPs and three full length albums with a full band for Sire Records, Harding decided to strip down his sound for his debut on his new label Forward Records (an imprint of Rhino Records). Harding much preferred the intimacy of  acoustic live performances and created an album that embraced that aesthetic whole heatedly.  Described by Harding as “gangsta folk,”  John Wesley Harding's New Deal  is a beautiful record and a fan favorite. It was the first time Harding had the freedom to make the record he always wanted to make. The song arrangements are simple and direct, putting the focus of the lyrics., which are both sly and whimsical, and full of British charm. And as an added bonus, the album even includes a fantastic sequel of sorts to the Kink's “Waterloo Sunset.”Visit us at www.tappingvinyl.com.

Wesley Stace was probably first known to Dylan fans by his stage name, John Wesley Harding - when he delivered great songs and albums from the late 80's through the turn of the century - including 'It Happened One Night', 'Here Comes The Groom', 'Awake' and others. This century he's continued to put out fine records and tour under his given name - including the recently released 'Late Style'. Wes has played a lot of Dylan covers, been to a lot of Dylan shows, and is quite the knowledgable fan -- as you'll hear in this episode. Wes shares his thoughts on Dylan in the 80's and early 90's, his initial reactions to hearing Time Out Of Mind, and his even greater love for Love and Theft. In this first episode of the Jukebox Graduate, Dave and Eugene discuss how music has been a guiding light in their lives, how they met, the first moment that they caught the bug, how they consume music, what they can still learn from great records, the losses of 2016, the unknowable legacy of rock and roll, and the relevance of outtakes. After listening to a new Chuck Prophet song they discuss recent releases from Ryan Adams, Joseph, LP, Bash & Pop, Porcelain Raft, Allison Crutchfield, John Mayer, Ron Gallo, Strand of Oaks, Dawes, Sturgil Simpson and Ty Segall. They close out with a song from Wesley Stace backed by the Jayhawks. Somehow in the midst of all of that we hear a little bit of Russell Scott & His Red Hots, Jason Isbell, David Bowie, Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and the Band. We're joined by musician and novelist Wesley Stace (who you may also know as John Wesley Harding) to discuss the first book in Anthony Powell's 12-novel cycle A Dance to the Music of Time. Mike geeks out over meeting one of his favorite musicians, then we talk about Powell's book, Stace's career, and people's general distrust of actors and musicians who write novels. Plus a lightning round featuring cricket, apple pie beds, and Mr. Bean.

Skylight Books Author Reading Series

Yes Is the Answer: And Other Prog Rock Tales (Barnacle Books/Rare Bird Books) Progressive rock is maligned and misunderstood. Critics hate it, hipsters scoff at it. Yes Is The Answer is a pointed rebuke to the prog-haters, the first literary anthology devoted to the sub genre. Featuring acclaimed novelists, Rick Moody, Wesley Stace, Seth Greenland, Charles Bock, and Joe Meno, as well as musicians Matthew Sweet, Nathan Larson, and Peter Case, Yes Is The Answer is the first book that dares to thoughtfully reclaim prog-rock as a subject worthy of serious consideration. So take a Topographic Journey into a 21st Century Schizoid land of Prog-Lit! Marc Weingarten is the author of The Gang That Wouldn't Write Straight and Station to Station. He is producer of the 2011 documentary God Bless Ozzy Osbourne, as well as television's The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. He lives in Malibu, CA. Tyson Cornell is the founder of Rare Bird Lit, a Los Angeles and New York-based literary PR and marketing company specializing in book promotion for authors, publishers, and organizations in North America and Europe. He lives with his wife and two children in downtown Los Angeles. Joining the editors of Yes is the Answer in lively discussion will be the following contributors:  John Albert cofounded the semilegendary cross-dressing band Christian Death and also enjoyed a stint as the drummer in Bad Religion. He lives in Los Angeles and has contributed to LA Weekly, Hustler, and BlackBook, among others. He won the Best of the West Journalism Best Sports Writing Award in 2000, for the LA Weekly article from which his first book, Wrecking Crew, derived. Margaret Wappler has written for LA Weekly, Rolling Stone and The Believer. She loves ginger tea, F. Scott Fitzgerald and the judicious use of the drum solo. Matthew Specktor is the author of That Summertime Sound and The Sting, his writing has appeared in Harper's Magazine,Salon, and Open City, and is forthcoming in Tin House, The Believer, and The Paris Review. He is presently collaborating with James Franco on a film adaptation of Steve Erickson's novel Zeroville. Early in his career, English songwriter Wesley Stace borrowed his stage name from that of Bob Dylan's eighth album. His stateside success arrived under the John Wesley Harding banner, as did his sole SNAP session from June 10, 1991. Touring in support of his album “The Name Above The Title,” Stace also borrowed Steve Wynn's backing band. Now called The Deceivers, the band provides sturdy and sympathetic support to Stace's wordy and melodic tunes.
