One of the toughest parts of retiring is actually taking the leap. Over the years, I've met many who have been focused on saving, investing, and planning for years. While they're financially secure, they can't bring themselves to leave work behind yet.   For some, it's not about the money but the joy they get from working. Today I'm joined by a member of our Chapter X community who waited to retire until he was almost 74. A native of Oklahoma, Rick Shelby's story travels from active duty in the Marine Corps to a political career on Capitol Hill and eventually retirement in the Washington, D.C. area.   In this episode, Rick walks us through his story, revealing why he feared pulling the plug prematurely on work and how he would do it differently looking back.   We discussed:   The #1 lesson Rick learned from active duty in the Marine Corps How he naturally transitioned into a political career after serving The biggest way that politics have changed over the last 40 years What Rick's first job was as a teenager in a rural farming community Why he regretted waiting to pull the trigger on retiring sooner How he walked through his transition to retirement through part-time work

Over the past two years, we all probably know someone who had a mild case of COVID but how about someone who barely survived it? My guest today, Rick Barde, joins us to tell us about his experience surviving and recovering from COVID-19. Rick is a recently retired school teacher who spent nearly two months in the hospital battling this disease. His case was so severe, he was placed on ECMO (advanced life support equipment called Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation) where 40% do not make it off and was placed in an induced coma to rest his lungs. He is truly thankful to be alive. He credits his recovery to all of the support he received from his wife, his school community, and the amazing nurses and doctors. You will hear about his experience through the worst parts of this disease, his recovery that he is still dealing with today, how this has changed him, and what he wants others to learn from his experience. Notable Quotes: “When I know how many hundreds of thousands of people have died, and I didn't, and mine was such a bad case, I am fortunate, I am thankful, I am grateful to anybody and everybody who has been a part of my recovery.” “If I can impact one person to make a choice to better the world by taking the vaccine or wearing a mask or whatever it may be, then I feel I am doing my job. We have to have more people out there who are making a clear choice to wear a mask and get vaccinated. It's the only way we are going to get through this. I have hope that we'll get there.” “It's changed me in that I am much more grateful for life. I get emotional about how close I was to not making it.” “If people are thinking about getting vaccinated, I say ‘ I had COVID and you do not want to get what I got.' ” In this episode, you will hear: - What Rick went through and what he remembers while battling COVID - His recovery and the symptoms he still deals with today - How COVID has changed him - What he wants others to learn from his experience Thank you so much for listening! Mark is delighted and honored to welcome his friend, Rick Pino, to the podcast today. Rick is the founder of the Heart of David Movement, a community passionate about seeing Jesus glorified through day and night worship manifested through internships, schools, conferences and summits. He is a world famous Christian musician who performs concerts all over the world, and, in fact, he and Mark met through Eagles’ Wings in Jerusalem about a year ago when Rick performed in a concert that Mark describes as an unforgettable ‘beautiful Israel moment’. The passage Rick has chosen to discuss is 1 Samuel 16:7. Their conversation begins with Rick explaining the passage, its context, and its meaning for him. He and Mark then discuss the themes of God looking into one’s heart and seeing potential, often in the least likely person. They also discuss how David will be defined, Rick’s perspective on the meaningful properties of music, and his remarkable experience with David Van Koevering. Rick also shares his analysis of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’, the meaning for him of his trip to Jerusalem with Eagles’ Wings, and, of course, the lessons regarding mankind which he has learned. Rick’s abundant knowledge of both scripture and music render him particularly qualified to analyze today’s passage, and you will discover that his unique insights here today are as fascinating as they are informative. Episode Highlights: Rick’s explanation of the passage, its context, and its meaning for him God looking into the heart God seeing potential How David will be defined Rick’s perspective on the meaningful properties of music The genius of God behind music Rick’s experience with David Van Koevering Rick’s analysis of the opening lyrics to Leonard Cohen’s ‘Hallelujah’ and David’s ‘secret chord’ What Rick’s trip to Jerusalem meant to him as a Christian music leader The lessons about mankind that Rick has learned Quotes: “You cannot disciple a culture that has already discipled you.” “God is actually looking supremely at the heart posture of humanity.” “I believe that God…sees us at our whole potential.” “Because I was faithful with little, I will be powerful with much.” “What God sees in David is a young man committed to growth, committed to improvement.” “I feel like music and singing is so powerful because it is a way to gigantically amplify the expression of a person’s heart, whether that’s for good or for evil.” “Music touches every single part of who a human is.” “God himself is a singer.” “I think one of the things that we’re learning in the 21st Century is proving the truths that the biblical author knew.” “It is actually one of the most life-changing trips that I have ever experienced.” “Mankind deeply needs God.” “The potential of mankind is absolutely limitless.” 1 Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said to Samuel, “Pay no attention to his appearance or his stature, for I have rejected him. Two Death Sentences and Still Surfing

After receiving two medical death sentences, separated by 30 years, my guest on this episode is still surfing.  Rick Kahn helps us learn how to let go and live now, reveals the sneaky downside of hope, and shows us how to embrace life's necessary "little deaths."  His road from dyslexic middle child, high school drop-out, globetrotting spiritual seeker, and high-end custom home builder to the life he lives today based out of a quaint seaside town in Mexico is fascinating at face value. But add to that storyline his two mind-blowing encounters with mortality--and you've got a tale that's packed full of extraordinary lessons and wisdom for all of us.    Meet Rick  Rick is an outstanding executive coach for companies whose products and services we all use every day. He specializes in leadership and communication development for executive-level professionals. His clients include Facebook, Ebay, Cisco, the Stanford Research Institute, Wire, and other Silicon Valley technology companies. As a strategic partner with FMI, the nation's premier full-service consulting firm to the Architecture, Engineering, and Construction industries, Rick provides best-of-class leadership development training to executives and teams.    Eat, Drink, and Be Merry--for Tomorrow... At 24, Rick was living it up in 1970s San Francisco--bartending and taking in the vibrant music scene as a self-described “Van Fan” (referring to Van Morrison). Then some alarming symptoms took him to the hospital, where eventually doctors gave him a grim diagnosis: colon cancer. What Rick did next took me by surprise: He ignored the treatment protocol prescribed to him and instead doubled down on his life of sex, drugs, and rock’n roll--determined to live his life his way...whatever was left of it.  Then, a couple of weeks later, a nurse showed up at his apartment door with shocking news: He had been misdiagnosed. His symptoms were evidence of a hookworm infestation picked up during several years of traveling and spiritual searching in India before moving to San Francisco. The hookworm problem was remedied, and Rick suddenly found himself with the possibility of years ahead of him instead of only days or weeks.   Simplicity is Bliss. Expectations Bring Disappointment. Rick left home at 18 as a high school drop-out--tired of living in the long, dark shadow of his older brother’s luminous performances at whatever he put his hands to. This was one of the first “little deaths” that Rick embraced--dying to the ever-present comparison and competition with his brother. He headed for India to find the better version of himself “out there” that he was convinced existed within him--traveling overland via the “Hippie Trail” through countries like Afghanistan and Iran along the way. In India, he learned that “simplicity is bliss, and expectations bring disappointment.” He also rubbed shoulders with the idea of “impermanence”--the temporary nature of joy and sadness, pleasure and pain, etc.  This experience added spiritual and philosophical depth to Rick’s already courage-fueled and risk-friendly orientation to life, so that when the colon cancer diagnosis hit, he resolved quickly to keep it simple, embrace the impermanent nature of both joy and suffering, shed expectations about how everything would turn out, and go out with a bang if that was the hand he’d been dealt.  When he got the news of the misdiagnosis, it bolstered his confidence that he could find his unique path in life.    A New Lease on Life Brings New Focus Now free of the medical death sentence and rid of his hookworms, Rick began to exercise more moderation on the party scene and put his aptitude for construction to work. Gradually, he built a high-end custom home construction business that flourished until the Great Recession of 2008.  The demolition of his construction business was another one of Rick’s “little deaths”--and it led to a new life based in Mexico, where he and others like him settled down as economic refugees.    Surfing Blind One day, Rick realized something was terribly wrong with his left eye. While surfing, he was suddenly unable to see well out of it. And then it went dark.  30 years after his first (incorrect) medical death sentence, at 54 Rick was shocked to receive a second medical death sentence: aggressive MS.  And once again, this second death sentence proved premature. A radiologist friend of Rick’s took a second look at his imaging and discovered that the symptoms the doctors initially attributed to MS were actually the result of “artifacts” created during the imaging process: slight movements while Rick was in the MRI machine created the appearance of lesions characteristic of MS.    Takeaways from Rick’s Story At least several key takeaways emerged from this amazing tale and the way that Rick has used his experiences to shape the course of his life:  Hope and fear are close cousins. When we hope for a specific outcome, we can also become fearful that we won’t achieve that outcome. Rather than hope for a specific outcome, Rick recommends that we stay present in the here-and-now process of life and allow the outcomes to emerge as they may.  Expectations are tricky and potentially harmful.  Goals are useful and important--when we’re able to stay open to outcomes other than we originally envision.  Let go of the tiger’s tail. If we grasp the tail of life firmly and desperately, we will be shocked when it turns around and bites us. Instead, let go and “be in life now” rather than demanding your life be or turn out a certain way.  Life is full of good and necessary “little deaths” that open the door to new life. The death of a parent’s approval. The death of other’s expectations. In Rick’s case, the literal death of sight in one eye. Some deaths need to happen so that we can move past them and into the new life that awaits. Don’t resist them. Let them happen.  The full episode has so much more nuance and dialog and depth than these shownotes can ever hope to convey, so I hope you’ll tune in.    Change the World With One Click If you enjoyed today's conversation with Rick, share it with one other person who you think needs to hear what Rick has to say, too. That one simple step--just a click of your mouse--will help change the world by creating a movement of people committed to becoming the people they were MADE to be and living the lives they were MADE to live. Joining us on the show today is Rick Caballo. Rick is a full reflection of art and creativity as a full-time passion and career. Now based in Nashville, Rick was born and raised in Wollongong, Sydney, Australia. Being a musical artist, Rick has played for audiences across Australia, the USA, and Europe. As a songwriter, he's won numerous accolades and has been nominated for several more. He has a natural passion for artistic creativity, and can easily multi-task multiple projects as a musician, photographer, fashion designer, graphic, and web designer. Getting into design Growing up as a little kid, Rick was always in love with the design. He found himself drawn to anything that involved creativity as a working process. While still performing as a music artist, Rick started a screen-printing and branding company in Australia that grew to be a massive source of income for him. Despite having a deep passion rooted in music and striving to be a major rockstar in Australia, Rick's constant struggles to make it big eventually led him to accept that he was just as talented and blessed in working as a branding creative as a musician. With time, he learned to accept and embrace this reality, and this has in turn led him into a successful career working as a branding principle in this successful company alongside his wife Melissa Core. Rick's working experience as a branding manager. As the co-founder and manager of Deadhorse branding. Rick has had the pleasure of working with several top producers, singers, and songwriters. He finds joy in working with a diverse group of artists in the entertainment scene and helping them establish their brand and find their identity. He, however, notes that despite being so talented, some of the current young generations of artists are setback by poor work ethic which is characterized by lack of consistency, hard work, and persistence. Social media has influenced so many of the young artists into subconsciously being demotivated and only shooting for short term gratification. Recently a Dad, Rick enjoys the experience of being a father to his newly born daughter, Felix Rose, who is a cornerstone and source of joy for him and his wife. As a creative brand manager, Rick finds joy and fulfillment in helping artists find and live by a brand identity that suits them. In return, Rick has also learned so much about music, song-writing, and fashion through the numerous clients who reciprocate their knowledge with Rick. Welcome back to The Bolton Ebikes Podcast where every week you get to learn something new about electric bikes. Today, I have Rick Barbezat, who is a local here in Nevada County and one of my good customers, so I get to see him often in and out of the shop here. Let's get into the episode and learn some great things about Rick what he's done with his ebikes, some of his experience in the past with electronics, and have some fun. This is episode number 15 of the Bolton Ebikes Podcast.  In this episode, you’ll learn more about: What Rick did when he first got his ebike that led to his passion today.  Why Rick wasn’t an average Joe when it came to electronics.  When he knew he had to get an ebike for his wife.  How he agrees to keep advancing the technology so that the competition is behind the curve.  What he did to create his 3rd ebike and what he learned from that build.  His favorite places to ride his ebike in California.  Why he enjoys having an ebike that he can upgrade when he is ready. A fun chat about front and rear hub motors over mid-drive motors. That was Episode Number 15 of the Bolton Ebikes Podcast with Rick Barbezat, a local customer here in Nevada County, California. So happy that he is having fun with ebikes. And I think he will be for many years to come. Now if you're new to the podcast, make sure to go to ebikepodcast.com. Who is Rick Overton: Rick is a double Leo and has been show-folk for over 45 years. He is an Emmy Award Winner, Actor, Comedian, activist. You may have just seen him on DRUNK HISTORY. Honestly, Rick was a little modest in his bio so I am going to add a little bit more. Rick made his first onscreen appearance in the 1982 film Young Doctors in Love, followed by a small role in Airplane II: The Sequel later that year. In 1987, he wrote an episode of The New Adventures of Beans Baxter while also appearing in various films and television shows including Willow, Amazing Stories and Million Dollar Mystery. Rick had one of the first HBO comedy specials and was Robin Williams improv partner. Rick is also very loved and respected by us show folk. You find Rick on Twitter Favorite Career Highlight: Rick: The next one. What Rick learned about from the Man from Mars: Rick: Each is an improv, but using set words. The freedom is in How you feel and say them. Then if there is latitude to play, you have an idea now of who it is that’s playing. Who is the Man from Mars: The Man from Mars is Washington insider from the Bush years. He did some not so nice things, faked his death and has been living on a colony on Mars. He is thinking of coming back seeing that the world has changed and people seem to be more... fill in the blank. Rick Ector. Legally Armed In Detroit.  Detroit CCW.   This interview has been 2 years in the making. I met Rick Ector in Tampa at Gun Rights Policy Conference in 2016.  He couldn't stop laughing when I told him about GunGrams and Riding Shotgun With Charlie.  And he said he'd love to be a passenger.    In February 2017, I had plans to interview Rick in Detroit after the concealed carry fashion in show in Cleveland with Rob & Amanda from Eye On The Target Radio. But Rick wasn't able to make it.     We've had a lot of back and forth about when we were going to be able to do this and did the other person really want to do the interview.   We didn't make it happen in Detroit February 2017.  Then we were going to again in Dallas September 2017.  But it didn't happen again.    FINALLY!!!!  In Chicago September 2018, we got in the car for an interview!   Rick was robbed at gun point by 2 individuals on his own property!  He has since became a licensed gun owner, then firearm instructor, then firearm training counselor, then 2A advocate.   What Rick is really known for is training 700 women in the same day!  Every May for the last 7 years, he's been getting instructors, guns and ammunition, and women together to teach women how to be safe with a firearm and get the CPL (Concealed Pistol License) in Michigan.  Please watch and listen to the interview that finally happened last month in Chicago.     http://www.legallyarmedindetroit.com/   https://detroitcplclass.usgunclasses.com/

Among the interview highlights.... Rick on Michael Cohen's FBI raid: "It couldn't happen to a nicer douchebag… this guy is so eminently punchable." Rick on the 2018 elections: "Democratic voters will crawl over broken glass to vote against Donald Trump's friends.” Rick on what GOP Senators will, and should, do if Trump fires Mueller: "Believe me, they won’t do a damn thing. They will not do a damn thing. Nothing will happen. “ Rick on how GOP members of Congress really hate Trump: "A lot of the ones that hate him are publicly the most red-hat wearing, chest beating, MAGA, 'build the wall' people you see out there. They hate him. They fear him, they loathe him, they hate their voters because of him. They hate him because they know they basically sold out their conservative principles.” What Rick recently told a GOP Senator complaining about Trump's attacks on Mueller: "You guys have to all get together and send him a f*cking letter that says ‘Dear Mr. President, if you remove Robert Mueller from office, we in the United States Senate Republican caucus will take up articles of impeachment when they are sent to us from the House and will proceed with convicting you." Rick on the damage Trump is doing to our country: "We're going to have generational damage from what Trump is doing. He’s broken what the presidency means as a leader for the country. He’s broken the moral stature of the presidency. He’s broken the belief that the president will adhere to the Constitution and the rule of law. He’s moved from being the leader of the Free World to somebody who at best is the bullsh*tter of the Free World with a love of authoritarians. I think there’s a lot of damage he’s done to the American brand.” Rick when asked if Donald Trump is a traitor: "I believe that Donald Trump has put the national interest of Russia above the national interest of the United States repeatedly. And by any definition I think that’s traitorous.” Rick on why Trump is the worst president ever: “Even our worst presidents, none of them were willing to burn down the republic for their own ego… If Trump were impeached and convicted, he wouldn’t leave the White House. He would dig in and make them pull him out of there like a tick on the back of a hog, it would not be pretty." Rick also called Trump "a gigantic c*cknozzle," and discussed his upcoming book: "Everything Trump Touches Dies: A Republican consultant gets real about the worst president ever." It was a wild interview, with a lot of laughs, and a lot of sobering discussion of where our country is heading. I hope you enjoy this as much as we did. (Originally recorded April 10, 2018.)

You’ve heard Scott talk about a variety of strategies surrounding the use of Facebook groups and fan pages. But in this episode it’s going to move to whole new Facebook level. Scott’s got Rick Mulready on the show. Rick is known as “THE Facebook Ad guy” and after listening to this conversation, you’ll understand why. Rick’s taken the time to truly understand the tools Facebook has created in its advertising platform and he’s unloading a ton of information in this episode about how you can make the most of Facebook ads to build an email list, drive up your product reviews, and ultimately sell more products.   Did you know you can use Facebook ads to drive traffic to discounted products - and get more true purchase reviews on Amazon?   With Facebook Ads you can drill WAY down into the demographics to choose exactly the right people to present your promotions to, and since people are usually on Facebook to share with family and friends, you want to make sure your “ads” are not sales-y. One of the best ways to do that is to present people with a fun opportunity or deal - a 99 cent product, etc. in exchange for an honest review on Amazon. Can you image targeting your product to the exact people who have already expressed interest in it or similar products, then asking if they want an almost-free copy of your product? Your email list opt-in will likely go through the rough. Hear how “The Facebook Ad Guy,” Rick Mulready suggests you go about doing exactly that, on this episode of The Amazing Seller.   What is granular targeting, and how does Facebook make it easy?   Granular targeting is a term used lately to refer to the ability to dig deeply into the statistics about your target market so that you can get your ads in front of people who are more likely to like what you’re promoting, with pin-point accuracy. Facebook has almost written the book on granular targeting by utilizing the voluntary stats of its users to let you create ads that dig into the interests, buying patterns, discussion patterns, and self-disclosed interests available in their profiles and usage habits. Facebook ads allows you to use all that data to specify who you want to see your ads and who you don’t. Rick Mulready unpacks how to do it on this episode of the podcast, so make sure you listen to get those great tips.   Why you should keep track of your numbers to make Facebook ads work best.   Here’s the scenario: You create a Facebook ad to highlight a free giveaway of your product. Within a few days you have 15 more people than normal who have taken you up on your offer. That’s an increase, and you’re really happy! The Facebook Ad must be working. But what might happen if you tweak your audience or change your settings just a bit? Would it turn that 15 conversions into 20, or 30, or 50? You won’t know unless you watch the stats (numbers) on how your Facebook ads are doing. In this episode Rick Mulready covers that topic and what seems like hundreds more, unpacking his head full of knowledge about Facebook and Facebook ads.   Retargeting, Facebook pixels, and how to catch the ones that got away.   It’s amazing, but true. You can use some of the tools Facebook has created to virtually stalk those who have come to your website through a Facebook ad, but never took the action step you wanted them to take. You’re able to follow them to another website and re-present your offer to them in a gentle reminder that they were interested and might be missing out if they don’t take action. People who use retargeting see their sales conversions go up by leaps and bounds. Rick Mulready covers Facebook pixels and how you can use them to retarget your ideal customers on this episode of The Amazing Seller.
