Charlie Hoehn is an expert at getting through to Big Name folks through cold outreach, as evidenced by the fact that he's worked with such greats as Ramit Sethi and Tim Ferriss. He's also—in part because of his time working with those greats—a publishing expert who's not only released his own bestselling books but also worked on many other New York Times bestsellers. (You can find out more about working with him by going to Author Alliance.)Despite the way things may appear, it hasn't been one clear success after another for Hoehn. He's even written about the many things he's tried that have failed! But there's one thing he knows how to do better than seemingly anyone, and that's figuring out what people need—and then delivering it. As he explains it, the last thing busy people want is to figure out who they want to hire. So instead of putting yourself in a sea of many, Hoehn suggests seeing where someone great could do even better—and then do it for them.We talked about all that and more in this episode. When's the last time you actually played? Yes, this is a serious question. I know as business owners we spend so much time being productive and striving to reach our goals that we can forget to actually enjoy ourselves from time to time. Believe it or not, making time to “play” is more important than most realize. Now Charlie travels the world and teaches other high achievers how to increase their quality of life by adding more play to it. So if you want to learn how you can start enjoying yourself more, make sure to give this episode a listen. In this episode you'll learn: -The long list of benefits that come with playing more. -How to actually start playing if you don't know where to start. -Charlie's story on how he re-discovered playing and the impact it had on him. In this raw, unfiltered and inspiring hour, Charlie shares: His journey through extreme work burnout and the depression and anxiety that followed. The fallacies we've been taught: that work and play are separate, and that adults don't need play in their lives. The reality: play is hard-wired into our survival-centers as human beings. Play is how we learn, build relationships, and find meaning in our lives. The invitation: choose to see life as a playground. Begin to blur the boundaries of work and play. Be intentional about how you will bring joy into your day.

DOWNLOAD THE GOOD ENOUGH MOM ACTION GUIDE  https://www.stethoscopestoswaddles.com/goodenoughmom/   Review of previous episode “Wholeheartedness is like a North Star. You can never get there. But you know when you're heading the right way.”- Brene Brown Cultivating is about creating something positive. It's moving you forward by putting your oars in the water to row your boat on the sea of life. Letting go is about removing resistance. It's detaching the anchors from your boat, so you make effective progress when you row. Without creating the positive, you won't move forward. And without releasing what weighs you down, your progress is limited, slow, and painful. The term “guidepost” also signifies that wholeheartedness is a way of travel, not a destination.    Guidepost 6: Cultivating Creativity and Letting Go of Comparison Creativity doesn't require talent- everyone is creative! Comparison impedes creativity Watch a kid being creative- Zero pressure ACTION STEPS: What's your favorite way to be creative?  Start creating and share your gifts with the world! Pay attention to when you get caught up in comparison. How does comparison feel?  What's good in your life? Check that list against your to-do list and to accomplish list Take that NAP!   Guidepost 7: Cultivating Play and Rest, Letting Go of Exhaustion as a Status Symbol and Productivity as Self-Worth Sleep and Rest go hand in hand.  Sleep debt is real! Pay your debts.  “Play is the stick that stirs the drink. It is the basis of all art, games, books, sports, movies, fashion, fun, and wonder—in short, the basis of what we think of as civilization. Play is the vital essence of life. It is what makes life lively.”  ― Stuart M. Brown Jr., Play: How It Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul May 2008 TED Talk : https://www.ted.com/talks/stuart_brown_play_is_more_than_just_fun?language=en “Kids don't run to get in shape; they run to feel the wind in their face and the grass beneath their feet. Kids don't chat over coffee; they make jokes and play games with their friends. Kids don't network; they bond while they're having fun together. There is no ego. There is no guilt. There is no past to regret, and no future to worry about. They just play.”  ― Charlie Hoehn, Play It Away: A Workaholic's Cure for Anxiety ACTION STEPS: Schedule time for unstructured play. Have a dance party- even if you have 2 left feet. Heck, play with slime! Notice when the thought that “play and rest are luxuries” shows up in your mind. That's like a warning sign that you're in need of rejuvenation. Use it as an opportunity to recommit to your top self-care practices. Brene suggests - make a list of “Ingredients for joy and meaning”- what specific conditions are in place when everything feels good? GUIDEPOST 8: Cultivating Calm and Stillness and Letting Go of Anxiety as a Lifestyle Calm is a practice! “Creating perspective and mindfulness while managing emotional reactivity”- Brene Brown  “The Dance of Connection”- managing anxiety- over functioning or under functioning ACTION STEPS Find what works for you Mindfulness- Start a daily meditation practice or a 5 min journaling practice GUIDEPOST 9: Cultivating Meaningful Work, Letting Go of Self-Doubt and Supposed-To What is meaningful work? Self-doubt undermines the process of finding our gifts and sharing them with the world- Brene Brown Imposter syndrome Supposed to- the battle cry of fitting in, perfectionism, people-pleasing, and proving yourself To overcome these- we have to start owning the messages  What makes us afraid What's on our supposed to list Who says so?  Why? Do not ignore these messages- acknowledge them, write them down and ask the messaged “What do you do?  Where are you from? How are you armor? Can I let you go and be safe?” I'm a wife, mom, CRNA, Mentor, Digital course creator, Life Coach, - The slash effect. You contain multitudes. Overcoming self-doubt is all about believing we are enough and letting go of what the world says we are supposed to be and call ourselves ACTION STEPS: Identify what meaningful means to you Reflect on what your unique gifts are, and start sharing them with the world. As Howard Thurman instructs: “Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” When you notice that you're should-ing on yourself, pause and switch directions. Drop “should” and “supposed-to” from your vocabulary and replace it with “want.” (So “I should do X” becomes “I want to do X/Y/Z.”) GUIDEPOST 10: Cultivating Laughter, Song, and Dance. And Letting Go of Cool and Always in Control Next time you have the thought “But what if people think I'm weird…” Remember that fitting in is far less important than making authentic connections with others. Don't let a fear of looking weird prevent you from doing the things that serve you. ACTION STEPS: Make a playlist that helps you let go and be goofy and lean into the joy of movement and singing Notice the little opportunities for laughter and play and take them   IN SUMMATION Play, dance, take joy in not comparing your creativity with anyone else's, take a nap, slow down, notice your “shoulds” and take solace in the fact that you are enough as you are right now in this moment.

In this episode of the ROI Online Podcast, host Steve Brown interviews Charlie Hoen, a young entrepreneur, author, and public speaker. Charlie graduated amid the 2008 recession and, like a lot of millennials at the time, found entering the workforce difficult. After several months of looking for a job that he would actually enjoy doing, he decided there had to be a better way.Conventional wisdom wasn't working. He started approaching entrepreneurs with a proposal to help them improve a specific aspect of their business - for free. If they liked his work, at the end of a trial basis, they'd discuss payment. It worked. Charlie was working with some of his heroes in the world of business. He always wanted to be an entrepreneur; he knew finding successful entrepreneurs and sharing ideas with them was how to start. In 2009 he authored his first book, Recession Proof Graduate. He went on to write two more books, Play It Away: A Workaholic's Cure for Anxiety and Play for a Living: Quotes from People Who Found Joy in their Work, and Changed The World. Charlie also delivered a speech at a TEDx event at Carnegie Hall. His strategy was to create value and stop hoping he would get the job, but instead start as though he was already hired. His highest motivator? Play. Enjoying the work is a massive part of the battle for Charlie. In his book, Play It Away A Workaholic's Cure for Anxiety, Charlie discusses hitting a wall and his experience with burnout. At a point in his life where he was experiencing a lack of sleep, overstimulation, and no job, he tried every cure he could think of - but nothing seemed to help. It was a dark time and not dissimilar to what a lot of people may be experiencing now in quarantine. His breakthrough came when he read the book Play: How it Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul by Stuart Brown. He started introducing play into his life, and it helped cure his anxiety. It also reminded Charlie why he loved his job in the first place: work was where he went to play. You can learn more about Charlie here:https://www.facebook.com/hoehnzone/https://twitter.com/charliehoehnhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCOf1LKVHi07DFw1LveTsa4QHere are the links to Charlie's books on Amazon:Play It Away: A Workaholics Cure for Anxiety - https://amzn.to/3d98ZJrRecession Proof Graduate: How to Get the Job You Want by Doing Free Work - https://amzn.to/2M3kAOtStress Hacks: A Guide to Enjoy Life More - https://amzn.to/3eqWfyhThinking of starting your own podcast? A few years ago, Charlie Hoehn had achieved his biggest career milestone: organizing best-selling author Tim Ferris' Opening the Kimono book seminar. He had a dream job of being Tim's righthand man. His life should have been perfect...yet something was clearly wrong. Upon completion of Opening the Kimono, Charlie woke up and couldn't breathe or think straight; his hands were shaking and he felt like he was on the verge of a heart attack. What followed was months of anxiety and debilitating stress that led him to leave his job working for Tim. Statistics around burnout and exhaustion are becoming more alarming by the day. The World Health Organization now includes burnout in the 11th Revision of the International Classification as of Diseases as an occupational phenomenon. To say Charlie was burned out is an understatement. Charlie set out on a journey to heal his anxiety and get back to himself. Meditation. Psychedelics. Therapy. Courses. Volunteering. Nothing worked except for one thing. Play.

Charlie is an author, filmmaker and marketing strategist. His work has led to rubbing elbows with the likes of Tim Ferriss, Ramit Sethi, Gary Vaynerchuck, the list goes on, and he's given talks for Google and The Pentagon. Charlie's written two books about play, one chronicling his discovery of play as an antidote to anxiety, and another celebrating how luminaries throughout history have valued play; including Bob Dylan, Plato, JK Rowling, Einstein, Jay-Z and Mark Twain. Charlie has a fascinating relationship to the spirit of play and it's value to mental health and happiness – which we really dig into. Some of the other topics we cover include: - how Charlie used play to treat his anxiety which then lead to writing ‘Play it Away' - some of the mindshifts he made to bring more joy into his life and work - how improv and wrestling can foster play - how he turned writing a book into a playful project collaborating with 50 artists from around the world We also talk about: - how to create opportunities for more play in your daily life - the value of journalling - and there's a brilliant challenge at the end to help kick-start your own play project Charlie was an amazing guest, and this conversation is full of so many great takeaways – please enjoy!

This week's guest is easily one of the most passionate we've had on the show. In this episode, Michael holds nothing back as we chat about the ups and downs of entrepreneurship, and how he went from being a wedding videographer, to filming for big names like Tony Robbins, Tim Ferriss & Richard Branson.  Through his journey, Michael discovered that the secret to finding success (AKA the crossroads of achievement and fulfillment, a la Tony Robbins) is to avoid the "shoulds" at all cost, and never stop taking action. Massive Imperfect Action, to be specific.  Be it his career as a film & video expert, or as a coach for creatives, Michael has held his ground when it comes to chasing every new trend, and following the advice of everyone else in the industry. Sometimes, the best way to build your business, is to do what lights you up.  One thing that Michael has done so well is persist in his attempts to connect with top influencers. And based on his portfolio, it's served him well.  “I have nothing to lose by reaching out; I have everything to gain." Tenacity (and admittedly, naiveté) have paid off in his pursuits of big name gigs. His advice: always show up with energy, and invest in the long game. Michael says, “For me, a non-response just means they didn't see it."  THE BOLD LIFE MOVEMENT SUBSCRIBE: iTunes | Stitcher Radio | YouTube   FOLLOW MICHAEL: Website | Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | Linkedin | Youtube SOME QUESTIONS I ASK: What was his transition moment? Why take Massive Imperfection Action? Where did the Jumpstart analogy come from for his in-person events? IN THIS EPISODE YOU'LL LEARN:  How he was able to work with Tony Robbins, Tim Ferriss, Brendon Burchard, & Richard Branson.  How he got started as an entrepreneur.  What product put him on the map. How he went from scared to speak in front of the class, to teaching large groups of people and crushing it on video.  The one thing you have to have to be able to pitch big names your product or service.  The two most important things to consider when reaching out to an influencer. What's wrong with a lot of courses out there now, and why people aren't getting results.  Why the in-person trainings are more effective than virtual teaching.  MENTIONED IN THIS EPISODE: The Jumpstarters Experience - http://jumpstarters.net/ Zen Habits - https://zenhabits.net/ 4 Hour Work Week - https://fourhourworkweek.com/ Charlie Hoehn - https://charliehoehn.com/ Disc Assessment - https://discprofile.com/what-is-disc/overview/

In my podcast Charlie and I talked half the time about getting past anxiety. And half the time about this: [14:00] - Charlie's time working for Tim Ferriss, doing a virtual internship with Seth Godin, and marketing Ramit Sethi's New York Times bestseller. He told me how he pitched his heroes (and how he suggests you can too) [23:00] - We talked about getting paid to do what you love (and how the first step usually means doing what you love for free). If you want a job you love, it (usually) has to start free. That's how you build the skill. People in low-level jobs are essentially paid to move away from their dreams. It's up to you to move toward your dreams. Charlie said, "You're brought into school where your spontaneity and impulses are muted. You're forced to work on stuff that is not that interesting to you... I think that's why it is so important to work for free because you have to tap back into what matters to you." [52:00] - Then we began talking about anxiety.  ------------What do YOU think of the show?
