To celebrate #IWD2025, The Newcomers Podcast will be publishing daily episodes between March 2nd - 8th celebrating a female immigrant. Come celebrate with us as we tell the stories of some of the many amazing immigrant heroines.Join us as we explore the bitter-sweet world of the immigrant. For our second #IWD2025 episode, I'm speaking with Wunmi Adekanmbi, lecturer and biochemist researcher turned immigrant tech talent advocate, and Founder of Immigrant Techies Alberta. There's this quote on Wunmi's LinkedIn profile that exemplifies how she approaches the immigrant journey and her life in general:“There are no paths anywhere, paths are made by walking.” Antonio MachadoWunmi moved to Canada in 2011 with high expectations as a highly skilled biochemist lecturer and researcher. “I came here with the mindset of Canada is looking for me because I had been handpicked by Canada to bring all my awesome skill set here,” she says. But after three years of trying break into academia in Canada, she had to change tack and reinvent herself. Her experience of career disruption plus the frustrating waste of immigrant talent Canada has been famous for in the past decade led to the birth of Immigrant Techies Alberta, a tech enthusiast group for highly-skilled immigrants (and those who share similar interests) who are already in or are interested in pivoting to tech careers and startups. In this conversation, Wunmi and I explore her immigration journey and all the lessons it came with. We also chat about:* The psychological toll of career disruptions* Why immigrants need to manage or run the immigrant settlement services* Her biggest wins with Immigrant Techies Alberta* Why we mustn't settle for less, and a ton of other good stuff.Official Links

Q&A on the series Passenger with actor Wunmi Mosaku. Moderated by Mara Webster, In Creative Company. A close-knit community is sent spinning on its axis following a series of strange and unnatural crimes.
I first became aware of Wunmi Mosaku at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival. Her feature, His House, premiered there and not only was the film itself exquisite, but Mosaku herself was a top-tier interview, brimming with passion and enthusiasm for her craft. From that point on, I've made it a priority to seek out Mosaku's past work and keep up with all of her new releases, and it's paid off big time.Since His House's release on Netflix, Mosaku became a scene-stealer in Lovecraft Country, she joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe via Loki, she did her first voice performance for the acclaimed animated series Scavengers Reign, and now, for the very first time, she's at the top of the call sheet for a series, ITV's Passenger, which is now available to stream on BritBox.Mosaku leads as Riya, a former Metropolitan Police officer who decides to relocate to the tiny town of Chadder Vale to care for her mother-in-law. After the one-two punch of a gruesome discovery and a strange disappearance, Riya becomes convinced that something isn't quite right in Chadder Vale. However, her Chief Constable, Linda (Jo Hartley), refuses to entertain any of Riya's theories. She's far too focused on maintaining the town's reputation and winning Best Kept Village. But is it all a facade? Are past troubles and recent unsettling events uncovering the sinister truth of Chadder Vale? Riya is determined to find out. With all six episodes of Passenger Season 1 now available to stream on BritBox, Mosaku took the time to make her second appearance on Collider Ladies Night. After recapping many key credits during her last Ladies Night interview, this time around, the focus fell heavily on her growing voice and presence in film and television, and how she aims to use them. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Passenger explores a close-knit community who are unwilling to face their fears of change, of outsiders and of the unknown. Set in the fictional small Northern town of Chadder Vale, Former Met Police Detective Riya Ajunwa (Wunmi Mosaku) investigates a series of strange and inexplicable crimes that have the townsfolk spinning on an axis. Riya arrived in decaying Chadder Vale five years ago and has since been searching for that ‘one big crime', the challenge that will make her feel alive again. Then one night, local girl Katie Wells (Rowan Robinson) mysteriously disappears. The town barely has time to register her absence before she reappears the next day, apparently safe and sound. The townsfolk ask few questions and normal life resumes. But for Riya, a relative outsider to the Chadder Vale way of life, none of this sits right. As a series of strange happenings and increasingly shocking crimes start unfolding within the town, the residents resort to short-sighted theories and blame outside influences such as the fracking site and its manager Jim Bracknell (David Threlfall). As things become stranger, the people push back on Riya's absurd notion that something is not right with this town. But what are they so afraid of?Passenger is written by debut screenwriter, Andrew Buchan who is best known for his acting roles on Broadchurch, The Honourable Woman and Better. Cast includes: Wunmi Mosaku (Loki), Barry Sloane (Revenge), Rowan Robinson (A Haunting in Venice), David Threlfall (Shameless), Arian Nik (Count Abdulla), Ella Bruccoleri (Call the Midwife).Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Loki, Luther and We Own This City star Wunmi Mosaku joins us this week to talk all things Passenger, a supernatural mystery show coming to ITV next week. Plus we finally get to talk about 3 Body Problem in full and reveal whether Netflix's new show from the creators of Game Of Thrones could crack Kay's anti sci-fi armour. Opinions divide quite spectacularly on the other shows this week, specifically Kristen Wiig-starring period piece Palme Royale on Apple TV+ and Anthony Mackie-starring apocalyptic road adventure Twisted Metal on Paramount+.

Director Phyllis Nagy and stars Elizabeth Banks and Wunmi Mosaku join Anna to talk about the inspiring new film CALL JANE. CALL JANE follows Joy, played by Elizabeth Banks, a woman whose life-threatening pregnancy leads her to seek help from the 'Janes', an underground collective. In Chicago during the 1960s, a group of extraordinary women came together to secretly provide nearly 12,000 women and girls with safe abortions. Sigourney Weaver features as Virginia, the founding member of the female activist group, along with Wunmi Mosaku as Gwen, and a fantastic wider ensemble cast. In this episode, Nagy and Banks talk about how they learned of the 'Janes', discussing the importance of activism through art, and the pertinence of CALL JANE in the wake of the US Supreme Court overruling the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade case. They also talk about establishing the tone of this comedy-drama that is as entertaining as it is empowering. Anna also speaks with Wunmi Mosaku about her personal motivation for being a part of the project, and about CALL JANE through a lens of race, both in the reality of the 'Janes', but also in the telling of the story today. She also shares her joy about working with the group of women who play the 'Janes'. UK listeners can watch CALL JANE in cinemas from 4th November 2022. Host D. Watkins discusses episode three, which focuses on how policing affects the lives of everyday Baltimoreans. The show's executive producers George Pelecanos (The Deuce) and David Simon (The Wire, The Deuce) discuss creating the character of Nicole Steele and the impact of consent decrees on policing in Baltimore. Actor Wunmi Mosaku talks to Watkins about what she learned from playing Nicole Steele and how American policing looks different than it does where she grew up. Next, journalist Justin Fenton (author of We Own This City, the book that inspired the show) joins Watkins to discuss what he has learned throughout his career reporting on police in Baltimore and the stories behind some of the officers who inspired characters in the show. Interview with Sickle Cell Survivor Wunmi Bakare. Wunmi is a patient ambassador and sickle cell advocate for Health Union and AllStripes. She was diagnosed with the most severe type of sickle cell disease - Hemoglobin SS - at 18 months but participated in a clinical trial at the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NIH-NHLBI) where she received an allogeneic stem cell transplant. While still facing challenges, Bakare thrives as the Director of her own public relations agency and advocates for the global sickle cell community, home and abroad. Now 34, she works across diverse disciplines - Consumer Brands, Healthcare & Non-Profit - focusing on brand partnerships, content creation and influencer marketing. In 2021, she launched “The Diary of a #SickleCellProdigy” Content Series, in partnership with WeGoHealth and the Cure SCD Initiative. The awareness campaign gives audiences a closer look at a patient's life with and without sickle cell disease. “My goal is to empower and support the next generation of patients with invisible disabilities like sickle cell,” says Bakare. “Sickle Cell is a disease, it is not a verdict of who we are as people. For me, it is the rock on which I've built my perfectly imperfect life.” Her legacy is advocating for social causes close to her heart including child adoptions and gender equity. She is an alumnus of the University of Texas at Austin and the President of The Gift of Adoption Fund - WA Chapter.
