At the age of 24, Sam was in a car accident that was caused by a drunk driver which left him paraplegic. Sam used his breath to connect with his soul and overcome the feelings of guilt and regret from his injuries. Today, he teaches students Zen philosophy, meditation, and somatic disciplines that have personally healed his mind and his relationship to his body. The past few weeks drastically changed the landscape of the world. While I am generally an optimist, it’s my belief that the next few weeks will continue to be a challenge for many. With that in mind, I have been reflecting on what I could do to help. The Intentional Performers Podcast has given me an amazing gift; a stronger connection to amazing people and expanded wisdom and knowledge. It’s my hope that the listeners have received this gift as well.  So, here’s my idea to help others during this time of uncertainty. I am creating a series of panel discussions with past podcast guests to help others learn, grow and take action to better their lives and careers. It’s my hope that the content will help people navigate some of their toughest challenges right now in a productive way. Sam is an internationally known leader in the field of personal transformation. With over twenty years of experience studying and teaching the ancient wisdom of Zen and Taoist philosophy, meditation and breathwork practices, Sam coaches high performing men and women and corporate clients how to master the inner workings of the mind, body and spirit and live from a place of peace, power and purpose in their careers and in their personal lives.  Chris Wilson Born and raised in Washington D.C, Chris grew up under extremely difficult circumstances. Poverty, drug addiction, and gun violence was the everyday norm in his community. At the age of 17, he was charged with a crime, convicted, and sentenced to natural life in prison. It was during times of isolation that he decided to not only to turn his life around, but to make a difference in the lives of people who currently live in poverty-stricken communities similar to his childhood surroundings. “Many years ago, I committed my life to self-improvement and helping others. I sat in a dark cell and wrote up what I now call my Master Plan. A plan to build a business empire and help others.” While imprisoned, he earned his high school diploma, graduated from all of the vocational shops, earned an Associate of Arts Degree in Sociology, from Anne Arundel Community College and taught himself to speak and write in several foreign languages. He became a mentor, started a career center, book club and after serving 16 years in prison, he has returned to society a changed man. He now resides in Baltimore City and is the owner and founder of the Barclay Investment Corporation,  a multi-service social enterprise, specializing in residential and commercial contracting work. Barclay works closely with local workforce and social service providers to connect unemployed Baltimore City residents with clients who are in need of a number of services. His other business ventures include The House of DaVinci, a high-end furniture restoration and design company and Master Plan Productions, a social impact content development company. Ethan Zohn Ethan Zohn is a humanitarian, inspirational speaker and television host; former professional soccer player; cancer survivor and advocate; winner of the hit reality television show, CBS’s Survivor: Africa; contestant on season 40 of Survivor: Winners at War, author and inventor; and co-founder of the global non-profit, Grassroot Soccer. In 2002, Ethan used a portion of his Survivor: Africa winnings to help found Grassroot Soccer (GRS), an adolescent health organization that leverages the power of soccer to educate, inspire, and mobilize at-risk youth in developing countries to overcome their greatest health challenges, live healthier, more productive lives, and be agents for change in their communities. To date, the organization has reached over 2.7 million youth in over 60 countries with critical health information, access to health services, and mentorship. In 2009, as a fit, active, 35-year-old former professional soccer player who had traveled the world on behalf of the international health community through Grassroot Soccer, Ethan became an unlikely face of cancer. Diagnosed not once but twice with CD20+ Hodgkin’s Lymphoma in the span of several years, Ethan endured years of aggressive treatment, including two stem cell transplants. Ethan is a graduate of Vassar College, and he has played and coached soccer professionally in Zimbabwe, the United States, and as a member of the US National team for the 1997 and 2001 Maccabiah Games in Israel and 2004 Pan-American Maccabiah Games in Chile. In recognition for his work Ethan was awarded the 2004 Nkosi Johnson Community Spirit Award by the International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care, the Heroes Among Us Award from the Boston Celtics and the Massachusetts State Health Department, and the Auxilia Chimusoro Award from the US State Department in Zimbabwe. Ever the tireless and creative promoter, in 2008, Ethan embarked on a record-breaking 550-mile journey on foot, from Boston, MA to Washington, D.C., dribbling a soccer ball the entire route, to raise money and build awareness for GRS.

Expand Your Relationship with Yourself Beyond Your Mind  So often we get stuck in a place where our relationship with ourselves is limited only to our mind and the incessant mental chatter happening within it. From this place, it becomes difficult to understand who you truly are, what you want, and what you must do to achieve the range of experiences that you desire in this lifetime. Your breaths are shallow, your thoughts are cluttered with the opinions and expectations of others, and your truth is being clouded by noise, the ego, and your lack of presence. But when you expand your relationship with yourself beyond your mind, everything changes. When you get into your body and begin experiencing more frequent states of flow and presence, your reality changes. You no longer worry about what you said yesterday or fret about what you must do tomorrow. You are able to simply “Be” in this moment without judgment or criticism. And when you’re in this place of presence and freedom from judgment, you can be 100% you. I challenge you to make a conscious effort to get into your body this week. Go surfing, pick up an instrument, train parkour, lift heavy weights, do something that jolts you out of your head and into your body. Because when you are in your body and focused on your movements you are present, and when you are present, life opens up in ways that you can’t imagine. 2. Presence Frees You From Your Bullshit  When you are living in the past or the future, it’s easy to get stuck in your bullshit. Think about it… If you’re living in the past, you are thinking about what you did wrong, or how you could have done something better, or how you said this or didn’t say that. You are stuck in an endless loop, experiencing the same “negative” event over and over again in your head. This lack of presence eeks its way into your present moment and you begin to doubt yourself during conversations and constantly overanalyze yourself and your actions because you are so hung up on yesterday’s mistakes. Living in the future is no different. If you’re constantly focused on what you want to achieve tomorrow and the life you will have someday, then you aren’t focused on the amazing life you are living right now. And if you have the ability to read this article, you do have an amazing life. By getting present, you are able to be free from the bullshit. With presence, you cannot dwell on past mistakes and personal criticisms. You cannot get caught up in projecting a future that makes you dissatisfied with your current reality. When you are present, you are free. 3. Presence Accelerates the Human Experience Everything that you do is amplified by the power of presence. Everything… All of the greatest human experiences from creation to sex to friendship to adversity are all amplified by getting present. When you are present with a woman, your anxiety disappears and you are able to reveal yourself to her in a way that is completely and totally authentic. When you are present at work, you can tap into flow states and execute your craft masterfully in half the time that it would take if you were distracted. When you are present with yourself, you are in tune with your body and emotions and all the lessons to be learned from them (more on that later). Presence amplifies existence. Get present. 4. Success without a Strong Internal Identity is Inevitable Failure  One of the greatest mistakes a man can make is to tie his identity to something other than himself. When a man’s identity is contingent on his relationship with his woman, his work, his possessions, or anything outside of himself, his identity is inherently fragile and ripe for disruption. No one is impervious to the harsh realities of unexpected change. From a lay off to a divorce to an unexpected death, there are thousands of things that can disrupt your life and completely wreck all of the things that you now hold dear. And if your identity is wrapped up in these things, when they go, so too does your sense of self. If your identity is outside of yourself then it doesn’t take much to raze your identity and leave you feeling lost and uncertain about who you are. By cultivating a strong internal identity, you allow yourself to experience the storms of life with all of the pain and joy that comes with them. You experience everything but can be beaten by nothing. You are who you are. And that’s more than enough. 5. Feelings Are Teachers  Human emotions are the greatest teachers we’ve ever met. Whether positive or negative, any emotion that you feel is there to teach you something. It could be there to confirm that you are doing well, such as the bliss that you feel when you look at your partner, or the satisfaction that comes from a full day’s work. It could be to inform you that how you are acting is not working, such as the tension in your gut when it comes time to pay the bills or the apprehension you feel about getting your yearly physical. Or they could be there to tell you that the path you are on ultimately will not serve you such as the inexplicable “Gut feelings” so many of us receive whenever we are unknowingly out of alignment with our highest calling. If you are going to live this life to the fullest and truly embrace this existence, you must learn to feel your emotions, embody them, learn from them… Don’t flee from them. Never allow your emotions to scare or control you, but always notice them and give them the attention and intention that they deserve. Your emotions are your mentors and your guides on this crazy journey. Follow them and you will learn more than you ever imagined. Expand Your Relationship with Yourself Beyond Your Mind  So often we get stuck in a place where our relationship with ourselves is limited only to our mind and the incessant mental chatter happening within it.  From this place, it becomes difficult to understand who you truly are, what you want, and what you must do to achieve the range of experiences that you desire in this lifetime. Your breaths are shallow, your thoughts are cluttered with the opinions and expectations of others, and your truth is being clouded by noise, the ego, and your lack of presence.  But when you expand your relationship with yourself beyond your mind, everything changes.  When you get into your body and begin experiencing more frequent states of flow and presence, your reality changes.  You no longer worry about what you said yesterday or fret about what you must do tomorrow. You are able to simply "Be" in this moment without judgment or criticism.  And when you're in this place of presence and freedom from judgment, you can be 100% you. I challenge you to make a conscious effort to get into your body this week.  Go surfing, pick up an instrument, train parkour, lift heavy weights, do something that jolts you out of your head and into your body. Because when you are in your body and focused on your movements you are present, and when you are present, life opens up in ways that you can't imagine.  2. Presence Frees You From Your Baggage   When you are living in the past or the future, it's easy to get stuck in your baggage.  Think about it...  If you're living in the past, you are thinking about what you did wrong, or how you could have done something better, or how you said this or didn't say that. You are stuck in an endless loop, experiencing the same "negative" event over and over again in your head.  This lack of presence eeks its way into your present moment and you begin to doubt yourself during conversations and constantly overanalyze yourself and your actions because you are so hung up on yesterday's mistakes.  Living in the future is no different.  If you're constantly focused on what you want to achieve tomorrow and the life you will have someday, then you aren't focused on the amazing life you are living right now.  And if you have the ability to read this article, you do have an amazing life.  By getting present, you are able to be free from the bullshit. With presence, you cannot dwell on past mistakes and personal criticisms. You cannot get caught up in projecting a future that makes you dissatisfied with your current reality.  When you are present, you are free.  3. Presence Accelerates the Human Experience  Everything that you do is amplified by the power of presence.  Everything... All of the greatest human experiences from creation to sex to friendship to adversity are all amplified by getting present.  When you are present with a woman, your anxiety dissapears and you are able to reveal yourself to her in a way that is completely and totally authentic.  When you are present at work, you can tap into flow states and execute your craft masterfully in half the time that it would take if you were distracted.  When you are present with yourself, you are in tune with your body and emotions and all the lessons to be learned from them (more on that later).  Presence amplifies existence.  Get present.  4. Success without a Strong Internal Identity is Inevitable Failure  One of the greatest mistakes a man can make is to tie his identity to something other than himself.  When a man's identity is contingent on his relationship with his woman, his work, his possessions, or anything outside of himself, his identity is inherently fragile and ripe for disruption.  No one is impervious to the harsh realities of unexpected change.  From a lay off to a divorce to an unexpected death, there are thousands of things that can disrupt your life and completely wreck all of the things that you now hold dear.  And if your identity is wrapped up in these things, when they go, so too does your sense of self.  If your identity is outside of yourself then it doesn't take much to raze your identity and leave you feeling lost and uncertain about who you are.  By cultivating a strong internal identity, you allow yourself to experience the storms of life with all of the pain and joy that comes with them.  You experience everything but can be beaten by nothing.  You are who you are.  And that's more than enough.  5. Feelings Are Teachers  Human emotions are the greatest teachers we've ever met.  Whether positive or negative, any emotion that you feel is there to teach you something.  It could be there to confirm that you are doing well, such as the bliss that you feel when you look at your partner, or the satisfaction that comes from a full day's work.  It could be to inform you that how you are acting is not working, such as the tension in your gut when it comes time to pay the bills or the apprehension you feel about getting your yearly physical.  Or they could be there to tell you that the path you are on ultimately will not serve you such as the inexplicable "Gut feelings" so many of us receive whenever we are unknowingly out of alignment with our highest calling.  If you are going to live this life to the fullest and truly embrace this existence, you must learn to feel your emotions, embody them, learn from them... Don't flee from them.  Never allow your emotions to scare or control you, but always notice them and give them the attention and intention that they deserve.  Your emotions are your mentors and your guides on this crazy journey.  Follow them and you will learn more than you ever imagined.

All of those are understandable human reactions, but shifting your perspective can turn that injury (or any other tragic accident) into a gift and a catalyst for change in your life and the lives of countless others. Facing his physical paralysis head-on allowed him to see other kinds of paralysis (such as mental or emotional paralysis) for what they are, and to help others overcome them through his Zen Warrior Training. In fact, Sam now experiences more vitality and clarity than he had before his accident. We talk about all that and more in this conversation. [03:31] - We hear about Sam’s current mindset about his injury and its consequences. He makes clear that he has to be intentional about seeing his injury as a gift. [04:59] - Would Sam say that his Zen Warrior Training wouldn’t exist if he hadn’t been injured? As he answers, he points out that just about everyone has some kind of paralyzing event -- even if they aren’t literally paralyzed (as he is). [06:50] - The most important part of the Zen mindset is welcoming every experience without judgment. [08:47] - Sam explains that reacting to the way that things are is giving up our power to make a choice about how to experience our circumstances. He then digs into what “surrender” means. [10:36] - There is one thing that we can control; Sam explains what it is, and reveals its importance through a personal example. [14:55] - Sam talks about breath training, which he finds to be one of the most effective tools for him. [17:19] - We hear more about the relation between breath training and mindfulness, with Sam explaining that we connect to spirit through connecting to the breath. Once more, he offers a powerful personal example to explain his perspective. [23:28] - Has Sam had that level of profound experience with breathing exercises since the examples he just described, or were those the pinnacles? [25:10] - Sam discusses the physical symptoms of his injury, which were always consistent. His healing took place on an energetic level instead. He then explores how he returned to feeling himself as whole after his paralysis. [27:57] - Stephan shares a profound breath-related experience of his own, which took place on a trip to India. [30:43] - It’s possible to experience the fact that you are more than your consciousness, but the point gets lost in the explanation, Sam explains. He and Stephan then talk about how disconcerting (and liberating) the process of changing your perspective in that way can be. [34:29] - You are far more than your thoughts, feelings, and body; you are consciousness itself. Sam digs further into this concept, explaining the sensation of coming to this realization. [36:32] - What would be an example of a shift that one of Sam’s clients made in which they realized that they are the space (or nothingness) in which things occur? [39:09] - Sam’s physical paralysis has been the catalyst he needed to be able to help other people overcome their various non-physical kinds of paralysis, he reiterates. [41:54] - Stephan asks whether one can have the sorts of epiphanies that Sam has been talking about in ways other than breath, then shares an intense and deeply personal experience he had in a float tank. [45:46] - Sam responds to Stephan’s experience and his question. He then talks about the challenge of integrating a catalyst experience into the rest of your life. [48:39] - Stephan has never used drugs himself, but had an experience in India that felt like it could have been a psychedelic experience. Today's guest is Sam Morris who is the founder of Zen Warrior Training and if anyone has earned the right to call himself a zen warrior, it's Sam. He is paralyzed from the waist down from a tragic accident caused by a drunk driver and he said, “While my legs are paralyzed, my mind is not.” When Sam talks about controlling how you react to circumstances and then how you think about what you can do in your life and not stop and not take excuses, he knows exactly what he's talking about and faces challenges that most of us thank goodness we'll never have to face but he's faced them and has gone on to create a zen warrior training program, a keynote speaker and he really gives people insights into the tenacity and grit it takes to deal with whatever life gives you and figure out a way to make it happen.
