Today's episode is going to be a little bit different than our past episodes: I'm actually going to interview two friends of mine, two colleagues, that are going to share their perspective on collaboration. Miranda Holder is an Executive Coach (and my own personal coach) that has a background in sport. She was a three-sport athlete in High School and then she found Rowing in College where she competed at an elite, high level. She then became a Rowing Coach and ended up becoming the Head Rowing Coach at Georgetown University. That journey of becoming a Rowing Coach ended up leading her to become an Executive Coach. Today, she spends a lot of time working with people in all walks of life in the corporate space, and she considers herself to be an insight wizard. She helps people see themselves in their situation more clearly, and for the people brave enough to do the work, there's an incredible leader, person, and idea ready to surface. She loves to work with people on being the best leader or CEO that they can be while also taking risk to start a company or refusing to settle into a career path that doesn't elicit joy and excitement. She loves helping people unlock their potential and at her core, she loves coaching. Grace Aduroja Kolker is a friend of mine, someone I look up to, and someone who I consider to be a mentor. Grace is a coach and someone who is extremely wise when it comes to things like communication, emotional intelligence, diversity, equity, and inclusion, and decision making. She is someone who I personally have sent many friends to to get coached. She is someone who facilitates dialogue with me on a regular basis and helps me be the best version of myself. Grace is a lawyer by trade, but she also has a journalism background. She is somebody who has had to ask questions for legal purposes, had to ask questions as a journalist, and as somebody who is just ridiculously curious. Grace is amazingly inquisitive and is a leadership coach. She is someone who holds space for people, develops people, and also facilitates conversations in group experiences. Grace is someone who I look up to, someone who makes me wiser and better at my job, and we often co-facilitate together. Additionally, she has a high-potential accelerator where she will work with individuals one-on-one. Here's a quick summary and some key takeaways from this conversation: In today's episode, Brian, Grace, and Miranda discussed the paradox of autonomy and collaboration, the importance of collaboration, and its challenges and benefits. Additionally, they emphasized the importance of vulnerability, fulfillment, and clear communication in collaboration. Brian acknowledged his struggle with receiving help and understanding others' strengths. The group also discussed the need to work on aspects of collaboration to enhance teamwork and productivity. More specifically, Grace and Miranda had a number of amazing insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together” (12:00) – Grace “The question of ‘Why?' is less important to me than ‘Where do we go from here?'” (17:20) – Miranda “I work on my own because I don't like working for other people” (18:10) – Miranda “Being in that energy of receiving can be really difficult” (22:45) – Miranda “One of my weaknesses is I don't allow people to contribute to me” (25:15) – Grace “There is a vulnerability [to collaboration]” (26:40) – Grace “I love being accountable and there's a lot I'm accountable for. But I don't want to be responsible for it all” (29:10) – Grace “People who deliver excellence deliver excellence across the board” (32:50) – Grace “The body [has] the ability to sense and be with the complexity of multiple experiences and multiple feelings and sensations” (48:215) – Miranda “I want to be tested and see if I'm good enough more than I want to avoid the discomfort of the challenge” (49:40) – Miranda “As you mature, you start from a place of dependence” (1:02:55) – Grace “That ability to sink into interdependence is so powerful” (1:05:35) – Miranda “The relationship matters to me more than anything else” (1:17:40) – Grace “You've got to do you own work first” (1:18:10) – Grace Thank you so much to Grace and Miranda for coming on the podcast! I wrote a book called “Shift Your Mind” that was released in October of 2020, and you can order it on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Additionally, I have launched a company called Strong Skills, and I encourage you to check out our new website https://www.strongskills.co/. Today's episode is going to be a little bit different than a lot of our past episodes because it's just going to be me on here. I'm going to share a lot of my observations, a lot of my notes, from a festival I recently attended called The Aspen Ideas Festival. It's really a conference, but it's much more than a conference. It's where some of the best thought leaders gather to share what's on their mind, to discuss, they have all kinds of experiences, they have debates, they have panels, they have interactive experiences. I figured I would capture the four days that I spent at the conference with all of you and share it in today's episode. Here are some insights I'd like to share form today's episode: “[The festival] was a reminder of the power of education” (2:40). “We don't need to be formally in school to continue to grow and become educated, but we do need to seek out opportunities to learn” (2:45). “We either evolve, or we die” (4:15). “'And' is more powerful than ‘or'” (5:15). “If we aren't healthy, nothing else really matters” (6:40). “If you want to be a great manager, you need to understand that part of your job as a manager is to connect with human beings, and we connect with human beings on an emotional level” (9:30). “We need to manage our emotions; we don't need to eradicate them” (9:55). “The people who are happiest actually dig rather than climb” (12:35). “Fulfillment is what's most key to happiness” (13:50). “Sometimes we have to take a step back if we want to take a step forward” (16:30). “Wealth is essentially your capacity to control your time” (18:20). “The thing that makes you weird as a kid can make you great as an adult” (19:05). “Following your passion is very limiting” (20:30). “Maybe the passion will come from the doing rather than the doing coming from the passion” (21:00). “Change does involve pain” (21:50). “Emotions are radar, they give us information, they give us data” (22:30). “Are we working hard, or are we overworking?” (23:40). “Let's look inward for the solution” (25:25). “Parenting doesn't stop once our children become adults” (25:50). “Not knowing is the most intimate” (28:30). “Our happiness is about looking out the window rather than at the mirror” (29:20). “Where you believe you're going matters” (34:00). “Vision can inspire” (35:25). “If you have clarity on the vision, then you can actually pass that down to the people in your organization who are actually connected to the customer” (36:20). “You want to get as close to that customer experience as possible if you want to build a strong organization” (37:50). “People don't need to be punished; they need to be helped” (39:20). “We assume that other people are thinking exactly like us” (41:20). “We need to be aware of our biases” (42:20). “Let's not speculate; let's explore” (44:05). “Whether you're a show or a business or a sports team, you're trying to do something together” (47:00). “Insecurities are what often drive us to feel threatened” (49:15). “Each successive generation is staying at their jobs for less time” (55:10). “When does capitalism go too far?” (57:40). “As we become more and more segregated behind computer screens, we need to intentionally create space for us to be in person” (1:00:35). “If you don't change, you either aren't paying attention or you don't care” (1:04:15). “We need to think about our education as a rising tide that can lift all boats” (1:07:15). “Our world needs to come together to think about how they're going to manage artificial intelligence” (1:10:50). “America is America because we collaborate” (1:12:00). “How can you be bold while still being responsible?” (1:13:55). “AI really reveals our own biases and toxic behaviors and holds a mirror up to us” (1:16:50). Today's episode is going to be a little bit different than the ones we've done in the past. I just had an inspiring experience that I thought would hopefully make all of us think a little bit more about our own identity, our own values, our ancestors, and how those experiences and the experiences of our family members impact us and how we see the world today. I wrote a little bit and I'm going to share what I wrote, and this is the best medium I know to share important, interesting, unique information. I really hope that today is something that will make you think and inspire you to look inward and reflect on yourself. At its core, this podcast episode is about identity and how we use that identity to make a difference and make an impact in this world. Here are some insights I'd like to share form today's episode: “What would you do if you were able to spend time with Adolf Hitler (without any consequences) if he was around today?” (7:15). “It's one of the best gifts I think my parents gave me and my brothers: the capacity and the ability to think critically and to have convictions in some of our thoughts, and to stay curious about those convictions” (8:15). “When [my grandmother] did talk about her experience [surviving the Holocaust], it was mainly about how grateful she was to be in America and to have the family she had” (9:10). “My grandma and her parents were the lucky ones in Hungary” (11:20). “One of the stories that always stuck with me about grandma was, upon arriving to New York and seeing the Statue of Liberty, a soldier turned to her and said, ‘You have no idea how happy I am to see that lady again.' To which my grandma replied, ‘No, sir. You have no idea how happy I am to see her'” (12:35). “All of us have the opportunity to stand up against hate. We're complicit when we don't” (13:10). “What I wasn't expecting was for my trip to Hungary to be accompanied by so much emotion” (16:25). “I've cried my way through Hungary. Some tears were tears of pride, and some tears were tears of sorrow. Some tears were tears of joy, and some tears were tears of anger” (16:45). “They say that trauma lives in the body. While I have lived a ridiculously privileged life with very little trauma, perhaps my grandma's trauma was pouring out of me as I walked the streets of Hungary” (17:00). “Life can be sad, hard, and emotional. Perhaps we all need to lean into those emotions to ensure we are doing everything we can to leave this world better than how we found it” (19:20). “[My grandma] would be blown away by the young people who are teaching and helping the older generation re-connect with their Judaism without fear” (20:00). “We must never forget what happened and we must never forget that we are a team. We must support each other; have perspective on what can happen if we don't” (20:30). “I believe life should be enjoyed and lived with gratitude in the present…. But I know I can hold more space than just joy” (21:35). “I need to carry some of my grandma's trauma with me. It will help me step up and step out against inhumanity. I don't want to leave my tears in Hungary” (21:50). “If you are thriving, you have a responsibility to go pour into somebody else” (22:40). “If you're just thriving for yourself, I would argue that's not a meaningful life” (22:50). “We all have to understand the darkness of humans. We cannot be blind to it” (24:15). “We all have to co-own our stories of the past” (25:00). “We're all an amalgamation of our DNA and our experiences, but our stories and our ancestors are inside of us. We carry them with us” (26:05). “I'd like to challenge you to reflect on who you are, your history, your identity, and how that impacts your decisions today” (26:30). “Do you have your story, or does your story have you?” (26:50). “We must create new memories, new stories, new generations, new values, new ways of seeing the world, so that we can make this place better” (27:15). If you'd like to connect with me further directly about this episode or anything else, you can reach out to me via email (brian@strongskills.co). Thanks for listening.

Today's episode of the podcast is a little bit different. Today, I'm going to be interviewed by Joe Ferraro. If you're unfamiliar with Joe, he has an incredible podcast called One Percent Better, he is someone who practices what he preaches, and he has had over 200 episodes where he's interviewed best-selling authors, CEO's, and all kinds of different people and leaders, to try and figure out how they're getting one percent better every single day. Joe is way more than simply a host, though. He's a high school teacher, he has a history coaching baseball, and he coaches people today on how they can communicate better. He is someone who thinks deeply about how to have, what he calls, damn good conversations. Currently, he's working one-on-one with a variety of people to help them with different projects that they're doing, whether it's their podcast, or a TED Talk, or helping them become a better public speaker, Joe is my go-to person for whenever I'm looking for advice, expertise, and coaching when it comes to my ability to communicate. He thinks about conversations all the time, he thinks about how we can improve them, and how there's great value in the power of conversations. In Joe's interview of me today, we talk about things like boundaries, business, how I see and think about things, and we even talk about art and creativity. Here are some insights of mine from Joe's interview of me: “We sometimes forget how appreciative people are for receiving gifts” (8:55). “Gratitude, appreciation, and acknowledging when someone did a good job is just so underrated” (9:45). “The more grateful I am for something, the more ambitious I tend to be” (10:45). “Satisfaction and complacency are opposites” (11:00) “Satisfaction fuels success” (11:20). “Just because a conversation doesn't land with me doesn't mean it won't land with someone else” (13:10). “I have personal values and professional values” (14:40). “I don't believe in true altruism” (15:15). “Humans need to fill our cup if we're going to pour into other's” (15:30). “You should never give out of notoriety” (16:05). “There's a time to be public and a time to be private” (16:20). “Thoughts come in; thinking is what we do with them” (18:10). “Most of us believe in polarity, we just stifle it with our own convictions” (19:00). “I want to love people and I want to love them deeply” (21:00). “Boundaries are so underrated” (21:55). “If I'm going to love the stuff that I do, I need boundaries” (22:05). “I love bringing people together. It's one of my favorite things to do” (23:10). “I'm a connector” (24:40). “If you can find a place that has no cell service and WIFI, that in itself is magical” (29:10). “Things are way easier if you do it with a partner” (33:20). “It's scary [to ask somebody for something]” (34:55). “Coaching is less about expertise and more about asking damn good questions and being highly curious” (36:00). “You have to have an offering. How do you have an ask without an offering?” (36:40). “Give me the person that is good and wants to be great” (38:50). “I don't need to shortcut and I don't need to hack. It's not going to be as fulfilling for me” (43:30). “I've gotten better at listening to my thoughts and understanding they might not be true” (46:00). “When I'm curious, I can get anything out of someone” (46:40). “Podcasting is one of the few things that you can overprepare for” (50:30). “I've perfected my preparation and then I try to be highly adaptable” (50:45). “I think sometimes we underestimate what we're actually doing” (58:00). “A lot of people are afraid to just turn on the mic” (58:10). “Things aren't as scary as we make them out to be in our head” (58:40). “We limit what art is or what creativity is to what we can see with our eyes” (1:00:15). “We are all artists; it's just how we choose to use the brush” (1:01:05). “When we label young people, we limit their possibilities” (1:02:00). “My clients have become my friends” (1:05:00). Performers at the highest levels don't rely solely on their natural abilities. In its place, they capitalize on the advantages of switching between two distinct yet mutually reinforcing states of mind: one for thorough preparation and another for peak performance under pressure. My guest today is Brian Levenson, an executive and mental performance coach who has spent years working with top achievers in the fields of sports, business, and the arts. Brian was surprised by what he saw from the sports field to the executive suite. Many talented people were falling short of their ambitions not because they lacked the required talents but because they lacked an appreciation for the thought patterns that drove them. In today's episode, Brian reveals his findings for making the mindset adjustment necessary to excel at both preparation and performance.Brian is the founder of Strong Skills, a company that delivers executive coaching, mental performance coaching, speaking engagements, and consulting services to elite organizations, performers, and leaders. He has had the privilege of working with CEOs, professional athletes, and teams from the NBA, NHL, and MLS, as well as the Federal Reserve, the Department of Homeland Security, Hilton, the Young Presidents Organization (YPO), and numerous other organizations. In addition, he offers a weekly podcast called Intentional Performers, in which he does interviews with a variety of exceptional high performers. His book, Shift Your Mind outlines nine mental shifts that will help you think like a stellar performer.[00:17] Motivation – Brian shares the aspects of his life that are driving him right now and the things he hopes the audience will get out of hearing about them today.[08:23] Three Foundations – Brian outlines three major insights to be gleaned from his book. [13:25] Framework - Getting the reps to execute without you being present.[20:12] Culture – We talk about the importance of relationships in shaping culture and how leaders aren't necessarily the ones who do it.[25:57] Fun and Joy – Brian mentions what practices he has established to ensure that everyone on the team works hard when necessary but also takes time to have fun when appropriate.[37:01] Believe Yourself – We spend a lot of time talking about how crucial it is to have unwavering faith in oneself. [51:26] Practice - The cultivation of our nature can be accomplished most effectively through work. [59:29] Perfectionist - It is simple to have a dream. Developing meticulous behaviors that propel you toward your goal is difficult. But letting go of perfection when it comes to performance can be pretty tricky.[01:19:32] Mindfulness – Brian opens up on the significant impact that mindfulness and meditation have had on several aspects of his life.Resources:Connect with Brian:LinkedIn: linkedin.com/in/brlevenson/Twitter: @BrianLevensonPodcast: strongskills.co/podcastWebsite: strongskills.co/Mentioned in the episode:Shift Your Mind: 9 Mental Shifts to Thrive in Preparation and Performance: amazon.com/Shift-Your-Mind-Preparation-Performance/dp/1633310469

Typically, I don't like to have guests back on the podcast for a 2nd time. But today is a little different. Joe and I decided to create a podcast that is interesting, unique, and something that I got a ton of excitement out of. We get into the weeds of if being a guest on a podcast is different than being a host on a podcast, which led to further conversations about being a host vs. being a guest in life, since there are so many facets of society in which we play host and in which we play guest. As a little bit about Joe if you don't remember from our past conversation, Joe Ferraro is currently entering his 23rd year as an educator, teaching 12th grade English. Joe also teaches public speaking and creative writing. In addition to his work in the classroom, he is the founder of damngoodconversations.com. Damn Good Conversations is a company whose mission it is to teach you repeatable ways to have the best conversations in your life and work. His flagship service is a weekly personal growth podcast, which is called “One Percent Better.” If this episode resonates with you, let me know. And if it doesn't, I would love to hear your thoughts on why you felt that way as well. Joe and I had a number of insights during our conversation. Some of them include: “I usually use the word workshop. Because if you feel like you're listening to a keynote, regardless of if you're 1 person or 1 of 30, the idea is that you're going to sit there and you're going to listen the entire time. That's not how I do [talks]. I do experiences” (8:20). “I don't want to talk at people, I want to talk with people” (8:40). “Whenever you're having a planned meaningful conversation or a meeting, agendas are so valuable” (10:35). “I don't want host and guest to bleed over into status roles” (14:10). “Everything in this podcast arena, with a microphone, is all the same to me because this is where I want to be” (16:50). “My preparation as a host far exceeds my preparation as a guest” (20:30). “I very rarely go into a conversation without, baseline, 5-10 questions” (22:20). “I could be more intentional as a guest” (22:30). “Anytime someone is paying me to help them figure some stuff out, I need to honor that. That is a big deal. When you put stuff out on a microphone into the real world, that is a big deal” (23:00). “If you are only going to be the one asking questions and you're never going to share yourself and be vulnerable in any conversation, I'm not so sure that that is leading, I'm not so sure that that is how you build a great relationship. It's a one-way street and I think great conversations are two ways” (25:20). “Great leaders listen. Great leaders ask great questions. That is true. And, great leaders offer great insight and need to be able to share with conviction what they believe” (27:00). “A couple episodes ago, I threw out this idea of a reverse mentor. Which is someone who's less experienced, usually younger, but certainly and vitally less experienced than me, who I intentionally sought out to learn from” (29:00). “I'm against shooting the breeze and seeing where things go. Once the relationship has been established where there's mutual respect and expertise on at least one side, if not both, now I'm diving in with two feet” (30:10). “Reverse mentor: someone with less experience who can give me fresh eyes” (30:15). “We both believe there are different forms of preparation, but it has to exist” (32:00). “Your attention and your focus are incredible commodities” (33:15). “Being a good host does not guarantee you will be a good guest, and being a good guest does not guarantee you will be a good host” (36:30). “When I watch a panel and someone knows how to do it, I sit back in awe, because it's so hard to ask questions that are interesting and unique and can unlock someone's potential and how they think” (41:45). “Would you rather be interviewed by Tim Ferris, or would you rather interview Tim Ferris?” (42:40) “Saying nothing is different than saying something and bringing a different shine to it” (48:00). “Those who are interesting are interested” (49:05). “We are constantly playing host and guest with people we're talking with, there just may not be a blinking light or a microphone” (49:40). “I think it's okay to treat different opportunities differently” (50:50). “'Not everybody thinks that way' is a really powerful framing mechanism” (51:50). This week executive coach Brian Levenson joins me for a damn good conversation on the differing dynamics between being the host of a conversation & the guest of a conversation. Among the questions we explore are: How are host & guest roles different? Who needs to prepare more? What makes each special? Whose responsibility is it to make the conversation damn good? This was so much fun for Brian and me. We hope it will be fun & valuable for you. What resonated? What did we get wrong? How do you see it differently? Let us know. Joe@onepercentbetterproject.com As always, thanks for listening! --Joe

My guest today is Miranda Holder.Miranda is a leadership coach who began her career as an endurance athlete. At 25, while training for the US Olympic Rowing Team, she found out she had a congenital heart condition that abruptly ended her career as an athlete. She transitioned to coaching and served as the Head Coach for the Georgetown University's Women's Rowing Team but found herself burned out after about a decade. Miranda transitioned and trained as a leadership coach at Georgetown. She has her own company and is as a professional certified coach with the ICF, a certified narrative coach through moment institute and is also a registered yoga teacher. Miranda describes herself as equal parts artist, athlete, and dreamer. And a deeply devoted pragmatist. She is most excited when she's supporting another human who has a big dream they want to bring into the world.Miranda and I met through Brian Levenson, my guest on episode 27. (Thank you, Brian, for the introduction and connection). After our initial conversation Miranda and I agree that we'd be great neighbors and it was one of those moments when I wished the world was a little smaller so we could indeed hang out in person! Alas, Miranda is in the NE United States, I'm in Sri Lanka… I'm grateful for the technology that connects us and allowed us to have this conversation and exploration. In fact, it is thanks for Miranda that I learned the term “structured emergence.” Miranda attributed the term to her narrative coach training, but it really captures the essence of my conversation on this podcast. I love the experience of seeing what emerges with each guest, for myself, the guests, and the listeners. If you've been touched by any of the conversations here, I'd love to hear from you. Or reach out directly to my guests. This podcast has been an experience of ‘structured emergence' since the start and I love what's emerging! Thank you so much for being part of the journey!Miranda, thank you for sharing pieces of your journey with us today, your reflections, wisdom, and inspiration. In this episode, we invited one of Dan's friends Brian Levenson to talk about his new book: Shift Your Mind: 9 Mental Shifts to Thrive in Preparation and Performance. Brian works with major athletes in the NBA, NHL, and MLS as well as business executives. After briefly introducing how Brian got into his executive and mental performance coaching business, we discussed the concept of achieving greatness by shifting from a preparation mindset to a performance mindset. Brian mentioned that one of the most important steps is to create self-awareness. Understand who you are so that you can decide where you want to go. To answer Nathaniel's question, throughout the journey of creating the right mindset, being present is the most difficult step, and thinking about the future is the most misunderstood one. Brian stressed the importance of "turning it off and resting" and have the "how much money is enough for me?" conversation with oneself. As Dan pointed out, "time" and "money" are two of the most misunderstood topics that we don't discuss openly and honestly enough. The opinions expressed in this program are for general informational purposes only and are not intended to provide specific advice or recommendations for any individual, on any specific security, on any specific Broker-Dealer or custodian. Harris is a Leadership & Mental Performance Coach in the Washington, DC area. Harris grew up in the DC area and graduated from Winston Churchill High School in 2010. Baseball has always played a huge role in his life, and he was drafted by the Washington Nationals as a LHP/1B in the summer of 2010, but instead decided to continue his baseball career at Lehigh University. While at Lehigh University, Harris got the yips and lost the ability to throw a baseball which was pretty devastating for his career. He decided to hang up the cleats in 2013, and dealt with years of identity issues until he was introduced to the field of coaching by Brian Levenson. Since having a life changing experience with a coach of his own, Harris received a Leadership Coaching for Organizational Performance Certificate from American University, and is making it his mission to help athletes regain confidence, make the best decisions possible, and live a happier and more fulfilled life. Harris has also been fully trained in Brian Levenson's CORE Mental Training program which focuses on the sports psychology skills athletes need to succeed. Harris works full-time as the Director of Client Relationships for Otto Kroeger Associates (OKA) which specializes in Emotional Intelligence, Leadership Development, and Organizational Development. He currently serves as Co-Chair of the Washington Nationals Philanthropies Emerging Leaders Board and is a member of the Board for Strive: How You Lead Matters. Brian Levenson gives us the psychology side of sports. He works with teams and individuals from kids to professionals.
For author and podcaster Brian Levenson, one of the most under-appreciated question words is “when.” That's because knowing when to shift between different mindsets and frameworks is just as critical as the skills it takes to do so. For example, elite performers of all types find success through understanding when it's time to prepare and when it's time to perform. Then, they can adapt how they are thinking about each situation to match what they need to achieve in that moment. This week, Levenson returns to the show to discuss his new book and why he chose to focus on mindset shift as a key piece of the process puzzle. For many people, it can be easy to get stuck spending too much time and effort on either preparation or performance. They forget that it's a combination of the two, along with a healthy dose of practice, that is a recipe for success. It's crucial for people to take a mental inventory every once in a while and then put the time into making up for whatever they're not doing enough of.
