The Gospel of Musical Theatre

We've got the Lutherans to thank for this one. It's the worst-ever name for a musical, but Peter & Nathan think that 2001's Urinetown, with music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann & Greg Kotis, is worthy of your attention – and some sustained theological reflection. _________________________________________ We talk about: The show's origin story (thanks, Lutherans!) and its unfortunately timed Broadway debut on the heels of 9/11. The politics of Urinetown – capitalist overlords versus the people's revolution, all painted in broad, satirical brushstrokes. Are there any responsible political figures in this show? What is Urinetown? A prison for malefactors? A way for the powerful to prey on the vulnerable? Death? Despair? "Following your heart" – What does that mean? And what if whatever your heart seems to be telling you turns out to be wrong? The power of music (particularly Gospel music) to move us to action. Who "should" be singing this music, and who is it for?   You'll hear: "Too Much Exposition" / "What is Urinetown?" – satirical take-downs of conventional musical theatre tropes "I See A River" / "Run Freedom, Run" / "Follow Your Heart" – Urinetown asks some complicated questions about love and justice. And the music is pretty dang good. You'll hear Hunter Foster, John Cullum, Jennifer Laura Thompson, Jeff McCarthy, Spencer Kayden and the Original Broadway Cast from the 2001 recording. _________________________________________ Check out some of our all-time favorites! (Bonus) The Day After is an American television film that first aired on November 20, 1983 on the ABC television network. The film postulates a fictional war between the NATO forces and the Warsaw Pact over Germany that rapidly escalates into a full-scale nuclear exchange between the United States and the Soviet Union. The action itself focuses on the residents of Lawrence, Kansas; Kansas City, Missouri; and several family farms near American missile silos.[1] The cast includes JoBeth Williams, Steve Guttenberg, John Cullum, Jason Robards, and John Lithgow. The film was written by Edward Hume, produced by Robert Papazian, and directed by Nicholas Meyer. The film was broadcast on Soviet state television in 1987,[2] during the negotiations on Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty. The producers demanded the Russian translation conform to the original script and the broadcast not be interrupted by commentary.[3] More than 100 million people, in nearly 39 million households, watched the film during its initial broadcast.[4][5][6] With a 46 rating and a 62% share of the viewing audience during the initial broadcast, the film was the seventh-highest-rated non-sports show until then, and in 2009 it set a record as the highest-rated television film in US history.[6]

THE FANTASTICKS, with book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt, opened Off-Broadway in May of 1960 and closed forty-two years later, becoming the longest-running production in the history of the American stage and one of the most frequently produced musicals in the world. Their first Broadway musical, 110 IN THE SHADE, was nominated for a Tony Award and was successfully revived by the New York City Opera starring Karen Ziemba, and later produced on Broadway by the Roundabout Theatre Company starring Audra McDonald and John Cullum. I DO! I DO!, their two character musical with Mary Martin and Robert Preston, ran for a year on Broadway and a year on the road and is frequently done around the country and the world. (One production, in Minneapolis, played for twenty-two continuous years with the same two actors in the leading roles.) Tom in recording studio.JPG For several years Jones and Schmidt worked privately at their theatre workshop, concentrating on small musicals in new and often untried forms. The most notable of these efforts were CELEBRATION, which moved to Broadway, and PHILEMON, which won the Outer Critics Circle Award and was filmed for television. They contributed incidental music and lyrics to the Off-Broadway play COLETTE starring Zoe Caldwell and Milddred Dunnock, then later did a full-scale musical version under the title COLETTE COLLAGE. In addition to an Obie Award and the 1992 Special Tony for THE FANTASTICKS, in 1999 Jones and Schmidt were inducted into the Broadway Hall of Fame at the Gershwin Theatre, in 2012 they were inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame, and in December of 2017 they received the Oscar Hammerstein Award.

Judy Kaye first came to prominence playing Lily Garland in the original Broadway production of On The 20th Century opposite John Cullum and Imogene Coca. In a career spanning five decades, she has played theaters and concert halls across the globe, in roles as diverse as Lucy Van Pelt, Rizzo, Maria Von Trapp, Mrs. Lovett, and Grandma Kurnitz in Lost in Yonkers. Recent Broadway appearances include Cinderella, Wicked, Anastasia and Diana. She played Eurydice in Orpheus In The Underworld, Musetta in La Boheme, and Lucy Lockett in The Beggar’s Opera at The Santa Fe Opera. She has twice received the Tony Award; first in 1988 for the role of the tempestuous opera diva Carlotta Giudicelli in The Phantom of the Opera, then again in 2012 for her performance as the high-flying Duchess Estonia Dulworth in Nice Work If You Can Get It. Susan Diol's acting career spans dozens of TV shows and theatrical works, but Trekkies know her best as the Vidiian hematologist, Dr. Danara Pel, from two episodes of "Star Trek: Voyager" titled "Lifesigns" and "Resolutions." Before her time on Voyager, she appeared as a scientist named Carmen Davila on "Star Trek: The Next Generation" in "Silicon Avatar." However, her character didn't make it past the opening act for reasons you'll understand when you watch the episode. Susan was also one of the actresses initially considered for the role of Captain Janeway.   Throughout her career, Susan has worked with Andy griffin, Dick van Dyke, Megan Mullaly, John Larroquette, Candace Bergan, Jerry Seinfeld, and Mark Harmon, to name a few. She has performed on Broadway and in LA and worked with some legends in the theater.   We discuss her time on TNG and VOY, including her memories of Robert Picardo, wearing the heavy makeup and prosthetics to become a Vidiian with the Phage, and how some of her memorable scenes came together.   Sci-fi fans may also remember her on Quantum Leap, as she was part of an alternate ending for the series finale, which we spend some time reminiscing about, too, along with other roles.   Plus, acting onstage with Uta Hagen, Victor Garber, and John Cullum, stories of character actor Roy Brocksmith who Trekkies may remember from the TNG episode "Peak Performance," time with Chuck Norris while filming "Walker, Texas Ranger," her two-parter on "Night Court" where she almost married Richard Moll, and her date with Brent Spiner! Corbin began his career as a Shakespearean actor in the 1960s, but today he is more likely to be seen in the role of the local sheriff, military leader, or some other authority figure, though on occasion, he has effectively portrayed murderous villains, as well. To moviegoers, he is well remembered as General Beringer in WarGames, John Travolta's uncle Bob Davis in Urban Cowboy, co-starring with Clint Eastwood in Any Which Way You Can, or Roscoe Brown, July Johnson's bumbling deputy in the acclaimed Western Lonesome Dove. In 1983–1984, Corbin played Merit Sawyer in the NBC television series Boone. Corbin's role was that of a stern father to the young actor Tom Byrd, who played Boone Sawyer, an aspiring singer. The program was set in rural Tennessee during the 1950s and was created by Earl Hamner, who had great success earlier with CBS's The Waltons. In 1994, Corbin narrated the acclaimed TBS documentary MoonShot, telling the story of the 1960s space race from the first-person viewpoint of Mercury Seven astronaut Deke Slayton. In 2007, he played the character Clay Johnson, father of Deputy Chief Brenda Leigh Johnson on The Closer series.[5] In 2003, Corbin co-starred with Northern Exposure castmate John Cullum in Blackwater Elegy, an award-winning short film written by Matthew Porter and co-directed by Porter and Joe O'Brien. From 2003–2008, Corbin played Whitey Durham, the basketball coach for the Tree Hill Ravens on The WB/CW teenager drama series One Tree Hill.[5] He also had a role in 2007's Oscar-winning film No Country for Old Men.In 2014, Corbin worked with Tracey Birdsall[7] on Dawn of the Crescent Moon,[8] followed by working alongside her for the science fiction films At the Edge of Time (2016)[9] and The Time War (2017).[10]In 2020, Corbin had a recurring guest role as Everett Acker in Better Call Saul.
