Tasha Eurich is an organizational psychologist and executive coach who specializes in developing self-awareness and helping business leaders and their teams thrive. Tasha is also the author of Insight: The Surprising Truth About How Others See Us, How We See Ourselves, and Why The Answers Matter More Than We Think. In this episode, you'll hear from Tasha Eurich on;(00:05:16) The scientific definition of self-awareness. According to Tasha, self-awareness is the will and the skill to know who you are on the inside, along with the ability to understand how others see you. She also points out that self-awareness is a skill that we can all learn.(00:21:18) The role of loving critics. Tasha explains that the most self-aware people tend to have three to five carefully chosen ‘loving critics' whom they approach for regular feedback. She adds that it's essential to appoint people who have your best interests at heart and are ready, willing, and able to tell you the truth, even when it's hard to hear.(00:39:39) Getting started. Tasha recommends concentrating on one behaviour you want to change and holding 5-minute conversations once a month with 8-10 key stakeholders. In particular, she advises asking for feedback about how you have performed over the past thirty days and asking for suggestions about what you should do to improve in the next month. (00:55:54) The daily check-in. In order to improve self-awareness, Tasha invites us to ask ourselves these three questions at the end of each day; What went well today? What didn't go so well, and how can I be smarter tomorrow?(01:02:29) The secrets of business success. For Tasha, the three building blocks for a successful team are a leader who models the way, a work culture that expects its employees to tell the truth, and an ongoing commitment to the process of staying self-aware.

From Amazon to Angie's List, Google, Facebook, and Yelp, we live in a world driven by feedback. In the best of circumstances, honest critiques can make us better — they can give us new perspectives, improve our work, or just offer some encouragement to keep us going. But feedback is a double-edged sword — it can be both kind and cruel, honest and petty, insightful and downright useless. So how do we navigate this world of reviews and commentary? How do we know who to listen to? When is feedback helpful, and when does it hurt? And how do we give it in a way that's both honest and kind? On this episode, we explore those questions and more. We hear from physicians about the online reviews they receive, the problems with the peer review process, and why it's time to retire the compliment sandwich. We also step inside a program that's been built around student feedback — MFA writing programs — and find out what it looks like to try and objectively judge creative work. Also heard on this week’s episode: You can find online reviews for just about everything these days — even physicians. But how accurate are those reviews? And do doctors take them to heart? Physician Neda Frayha talks with her fellow docs about how they feel about patient reviews. Frayha is a primary care physician in Maryland, and host of the Primary Care Reviews and Perspectives podcast for Hippo Education. We talk with researcher and author Marcus Buckingham about reviews of all kinds — when they help, when they hurt, and why employee performance reviews are “worse than useless.” Buckingham is the co-author of “Nine Lies About Work: A Freethinking Leader's Guide to the Real World.” Before scientific studies get published in respectable journals, they’re supposed to go through a process called peer review — a kind of editing process performed by other scientists. But in the age of COVID-19, that important step has increasingly been pushed back in order to get new data out quicker. We talk with Mark Humphries, a neuroscientist at the University of Nottingham, about the limitations of the peer review process, and what he thinks needs to change. To be helpful, feedback must be honest — but sometimes honesty can be painful. So how do you offer the unvarnished truth without alienating the other person? We put that question to researcher Taya Cohen, who studies radical honesty. She tells us how three days of honesty affected people's relationships, what's wrong with the “compliment sandwich,” and how to give feedback that's actually helpful. Cohen is a professor of organizational behavior and business ethics at the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University. Friends can be one of our best resources for honest feedback — if we're willing to hear it. Psychologist Tasha Eurich makes a case for the “dinner of truth,” and what it taught her about not being annoying. Eurich is the author of “Insight: The Surprising Truth About How Others See Us, How We See Ourselves, and Why the Answers Matter More Than We Think.”
Imagine someone just pointed out you have something stuck in your teeth. A comment like that would probably make most of us self-conscious, but you'd probably be grateful for the heads up if you were about to head into a meeting. Now imagine that situation but with higher stakes, like your attitude at work or the way you behave with your partner. What would happen if we went through life unaware of how we are perceived? In today's episode, organizational psychologist Tasha Eurich talks about what self-awareness even is and why seeking out what others see in you can be in your best interest. She also shares exercises to get to know yourself and your values, and why this knowledge is an important part of achieving your goals. Tasha is an executive coach and author of the book “Insight: The Surprising Truth About How Others See Us, How We See Ourselves, and Why the Answers Matter More Than We Think” (Currency, 2018). Her work has been featured in Harvard Business Review, The New York Times, and The Wall Street Journal. WOW o WOW. Perhaps one of my deepest & most impactful episodes to date, literally. Jenny Schatzle is someone who attended my 3.5 Day Mentorship program in October 2012. Hi everyone! Welcome back to today's episode: How Leaders Can Uncover Their Blind Spots. We've all seen leaders who are fully aware of those blind spots, and we've seen leaders who are not aware of those blind spots and the impact that can have on their people and their organization. My guest is Jason Treu. He's an executive coach and best-selling author of Social Wealth, a how-to guide on building extraordinary business relationships. He's been a TEDx Speaker, where he debuted his team-building game, Cards Against Mundanity, and he himself is the host of the Executive Breakthroughs Podcast where CEOs, entrepreneurs and experts share their breakthroughs and breakdowns. In this episode, we also talk about: The importance of making time to build relationships, Psychological safety Asking for feedback Understanding the fundamental patterns sabotaging your success, and a whole lot more. Don't forget to subscribe and rate us on Apple Podcasts! Make Time to Build Team and Client Relationships I had to get everyone to buy-in on the team by getting to know them. Just trying to show a great plan or getting some results wasn't enough to motivate people. I really have to understand and learn a lot about them. The same thing happened on the client side. I had to build a lot of relationships with people, and then I had to fundamentally understand their business from top to bottom, so I not only could give them marketing advice, but also business advice. Patterns that sabotage your success In life, what happens is that you start learning as a kid and over time, you become an adult. Some of the things you learned as a child, no one tells you to stop learning over time. Your parents might tell you, “Don't talk to strangers” when you were ten because they don't want you to get into trouble and get abducted or something. But what they don't tell you when you're 18 and going off to college is you have to do that to meet people. What ends up happening is a lot of the things that end up helping you or keeping you safe are now sabotaging your success. One simple example is, let's say there's someone who's a poor listener and they're having problems. People around them are telling them they're not good listeners, they don't seem engaged, they don't care about them. When I go back to their childhood, they've lived with very large families. They grew up with quite a few siblings and they had to yell over their siblings to get their parents' attention. I was working with someone and they wanted to go to a school function back when they were in fifth grade. I was like, “What did you do?” and they were like, “Well, I elbowed my sister and brother really hard, simultaneously…and they fell off their chairs. And then I yelled across the table at my Mom and Dad and told them I needed them to go to some school function. And they said, “Yes.” Then I asked them, “Could you have gotten them to go any other way?” And they were like, “Probably not, because I wasn't that loud or overbearing, so it was really hard to get their attention with everyone around, so I was really worried I couldn't.” They learned at that point that listening wasn't helpful, and it would not have gotten them what they wanted. Well, they carried that trait through their entire career, and now it's killing their success and the people around them are frustrated and won't talk to them. Look Inward to Find Your Blind Spots Change and great things start inside of you, not out. I always say that that's the place you ultimately have to start from to learn, and that helps you learn about other people. If you don't, these blind spots will end up crushing you because you'll unable to see them but everyone around you will. She was selected by Marshall Goldsmith for his exclusive “100 Coaches” project to advance the practice of leadership. Tasha’s TEDx talks have been viewed more than three million times. She is the author of the book Insight: The Surprising Truth About How Others See Us, How We See Ourselves, and Why the Answers Matter More Than We Think. In this conversation, Tasha and I discuss the critical nature of self-awareness and the tendency most people have to stay mum about the truth. She shows us how to discover loving critics who will help you get better — and what you can do and say to support useful feedback coming your way. Key Points Internal and external self-awareness are both critical — and different. Improving both is important for most leaders. “Research shows that people are perfectly willing to tell white lies when they’re easier than the cold, hard truth.” Loving critics are people who have mutual trust with you, have sufficient exposure to the behavior you want feedback on and a clear picture of what success looks like, and are willing and able to be brutally honest with you. Meet Ron Carucci, the co-founder and managing partner at Navalent, who works with CEOs and executives pursuing transformational change for their organizations. I came across Ron’s work in the Harvard Business Review. His writing on leading change, navigating conflict, and understanding corporate values and lies, as well as many other topics, has always challenged my thinking and offered valuable insights. Ron is someone deeply invested in helping leaders thrive by impacting the lives of those they lead. I was fascinated to learn that Ron keeps a collection of antique door knobs, door knockers, and skeleton keys so that he gets a reminder that life is about finding and pursuing the open doors in front of us and making sure those doors open for others. Episode Highlights In this interview, Ron and I discuss: Being an introvert and the superpowers that come with it What helps Ron be grateful for all those in his life who’ve been part of his story How artifacts impact our behavior Ron’s research on why people lie or withhold the truth at work How companies inadvertently institutionalize duplicity and trigger dishonesty among their employees Enabling the culture of honesty in an organization The dangers of using values without living them Conditions that need to be present to prevent the misuse of corporate values How to know when training is the answer (and when it is NOT) when it comes to behavior change More About Ron Carucci Ron has a thirty-year track record helping some of the world’s most influential executives tackle the challenges of strategy, organization, and leadership. From start-ups to Fortune 10s, turnarounds to new markets and strategies, overhauling leadership and culture to redesigning for growth, he has worked in more than 25 countries on 4 continents. In addition to being a regular contributor to the Harvard Business Review and Forbes, he has been featured in Fortune, CEO Magazine, BusinessInsider, MSNBC, Inc, Business Week, Smart Business, and Thought Leaders. Today, I want to have a conversation with you about health. I’m not sure that I’ve shared on the show my own health journey. In fact, did you know that I wrote a book all about it that was published when I was in my twenties? It was written for teenage girls and called Body. Beauty. Boys. The Truth About Girls and How We See Ourselves. That book chronicled my journey through eating disorders and body obsession and the truths that finally helped me see myself clearly. The girl who wrote that book as a 25-year-old had yet to experience turning 30 and yet to experience having babies and yet to experience turning 40. And I’m talking you today and I have yet to experience what turning 50 or 60 is like but I do know that there are some principles that we can adopt now that is beneficial no matter what age we are. There are principles that will help you to have a better perspective on yourself and your health. In this episode, Tasha Eurich describes concepts from her book Insight: The Surprising Truth About How Others See Us, How We See Ourselves, and Why the Answers Matter More Thank We Think. Eurich explains how developing self-awareness—knowing who we are and how others see us—can help you be fulfilled, confident, and successful in life and work. “As an organizational psychologist—and intuitively—I’ve always believed that self-awareness was an important skill. But as an executive coach, I’ve come to realize it is an essential skill. I wanted proof, so I started researching the concept.” Eurich’s research shows that self-awareness is the foundation for high performance, smart choices, and lasting relationships. It also shows that most people don’t see themselves as clearly as they could. “Our data reveals that 95 percent of people believe they are self-aware, but the real number is 12 to 15 percent,” she says. “That means, on a good day, about 80 percent of people are lying about themselves—to themselves.” There are two parts to self-awareness: internal and external. Internal self-awareness means knowing your values and personality strengths and weaknesses. External self-awareness means knowing how other people see you. The two parts are independent of each other. A person can be high or low on both scales, or high on one and low on the other. Fortunately, self-awareness is a skill that can be developed—all it takes is a willingness to improve. Critical elements include questioning your assumptions about yourself and asking for feedback. Most people don’t like hearing feedback, but pushing past this discomfort is one of the first steps on the journey to self-awareness. Eurich identifies a phenomenon she calls cult of self as a global problem. “Think about the way people use social media. They don't post bad news—only great news. It can take so much effort to make ourselves seem a certain way that we become disconnected from who we really are,” she explains. “We each have a choice between being a meformer—just talking about ourselves, or an informer—focusing on what we do, how we can add value to the world, and what we learn from people around us.” Self-serving behavior shows up in the workplace when people are not authentic and not open to feedback. The most productive work environments, according to Eurich, are built around people being humble, open, honest, and willing to learn and grow. “A surprising finding centers on people who spend a lot of time in self-reflection. We assume they would be more self-aware, but it isn’t true. Some people spend so much time ruminating on the negative that it actually damages their self-awareness. The key to effective self-reflection is to think about something for a defined period of time and then make a decision, not to beat yourself up. For example, instead of focusing on why you may have done something, think about what you can do differently next time or what kind of support you need. Self-reflection should move you forward productively.” To apply this concept in the workplace, leaders must model self-awareness behaviors. First, ask for feedback from every member of the team. Create a safe environment for people to share their truth when giving feedback. Most important, make sure this is a continuous practice—not just an activity at a retreat. Eurich offers one last piece of advice. “Working on your self-awareness will put you ahead of 80 percent of your colleagues. It is the secret ingredient. Don’t put pressure on yourself to do it quickly—be open to what people tell you so that you can make a significant improvement.” About The Ken Blanchard Companies The Ken Blanchard Companies is the global leader in management training. On this episode of The Enneagram Journey, Suzanne speaks with Sarah Bragg, host of the podcast Surviving Sarah and author of the book Body. Beauty. Boys. The Truth About Girls and How We See Ourselves. Sarah is a 3 on the Enneagram. She's married to her husband, who is a 5 on the Enneagram, and together they have two girls. We hope you enjoy this episode of the Enneagram Journey.
Today we have our friend Sarah Bragg joining us to discuss whether you can still support your spouse when you don’t agree with them. Let us tell you a little about Sarah! Sarah Bragg has worked in ministry and alongside those serving in ministry for more than 15 years. Her book titled Body. Beauty. Boys. The Truth About Girls and How We See Ourselves helps young women find their value in the One who matters. She currently works as the Content Director for the Live A Better Story adult small group curriculum. She also has a Masters of Arts in Biblical Studies from Dallas Theological Seminary. In 2015, she launched a successful podcast, Surviving Sarah, where she invites guests to join her around her kitchen table to talk about surviving life so that women will be inspired, informed, encouraged and entertained. You can find her online at SurvivingSarah.com Sarah and her husband, Scott, and their daughters, Sinclair and Rory, reside in Marietta, Georgia. A few months ago, our own Ted was a guest on Sarah’s podcast. Ted heard Sarah’s stories about how her and her husband are both entrepreneurs and knew he wanted to have her on the MarriedPeople podcast. We’re glad to have her as we talk about this tension. The Tension: In marriage we are going to have times we don’t agree with our spouse. Sarah: Scott is a risk taker and I’m not. He does think through things, but he is more willing to take a big risk when he sees the potential. I’ve had to learn the balance between when I go to him for more clarification or to share my opinion and when I step back. Because ultimately I can’t change his mind! The only one who can is God, and I take a step back and pray that if it’s not what’s best for our family God would shut it down. Truth: Understanding your spouse leads to grace for your spouse. When the relationship is what matters to you the most, it’s worth the effort to get to know what drives their decisions. There are times when you need to go seek outside counsel, but if you can focus on the bigger picture and learn to understand your spouse you’ll be able to continue moving forward in your story! Your one simple thing for this week: Do one thing to better understand your spouse. This can be a small thing! Turn off the tv and ask them questions Take a personality test (we love the Enneagram!) Listen to a podcast – maybe this one? Can you support your spouse when you don’t understand or agree with them? Yes, and we can do it by assuming the best and extending grace as we continue to try to understand where they’re coming from. Thanks for joining us for the Married People Podcast! We hope today’s episode helped you realize that marriage is a little easier than you may think. We hope you’ll subscribe to the podcast on iTunes and leave a review – they help us make the podcast better. And while you’re there, be sure to subscribe to Sarah’s podcast – Surviving Sarah – as well! If you want more resources, check out Your Best Us and our blog at MarriedPeople.org. Crystal Renaud joins me for Episode 56. Let me go ahead and warn you that we will be talking content that isn't safe for young ears. So you may want to listen to this one with your earbuds on. We talk about her story of how she was introduced to pornography, where her addiction led her and how she found healing. I know that talking about subjects like sex and pornography are awkward even as adults and the conversation can most definitely feel awkward with your children. But it is so important to initiate conversation with your children about this. Don't be afraid to talk about it. There are some great resources out there to help you talk to your kids. I'll be sure to link to those in our show notes online at SurvivingSarah. If you are struggling with pornography, I want you to know that you are loved and accepted and valued apart from that. I want to encourage you to reach out to Crystal's ministry or maybe a friend or someone in your local church for help. If you decide to purchase anything mentioned in the show, please do so through the link I give you. It's a custom amazon link so that the show will get a small kickback. Its an easy way to support the show. What part of our conversation struck you? Let's not let the conversation end here. Come find me @sarahwbragg on Instagram or Twitter or SurvivingSarahPodcast on Facebook. I wanted to remind you that you can purchase a copy of my book Body. Beauty. Boys. Melanie Shankle joins me for Episode 50. She is a wife, mother, writer and speaker. I asked Melanie to come on the show so that we could have an honest conversation about friendship. I don't know what stage of life you are in, but regardless, cultivating friendship is not easy. We talk about how to find authentic friends, how to model friendship for your children and what to do when you face conflict in a friendship. So pull up a chair to the table and join the conversation. With this being the week of Thanksgiving, I just wanted to remind you of how thankful I am of you! Thank you for spending some of your week with me. I have loved connecting with you and hope that this show truly does help you survive a little easier. And in the spirit of thanksgiving and of course black Friday, I wanted to let you know that my book is available for sale at SurvivingSarah.com I haven't really talked much about my book here, but if you haven't heard, I wrote a book called Body.
