These are known as the D1 Lands, protected from mining and energy development by the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act of 1971. In 2020, the management of these lands was thrown into limbo. Now, the BLM is asking for the American people to determine the future of these lands. In 2019 Steve Cannon rolled across Knik Lake, an hour northwest of Anchorage Alaska, with more than a hundred others riding, skiing and on foot, down the Iditarod Trail. Leaving McGrath, more than 300-miles away, the 17 remaining would ride and walk deep into the unknown, pushing through fresh snow, across barren tundra, up melting rivers and across a frozen sea as they made their way the 1000-miles to Nome.

Upon his return home, Cannon sat down with Dave Mable to capture his experiences on film. This is his story of crossing Alaska by bike, from the shores of Knik Lake, to the edge of the Bering Sea. Well - we did it - an on the bike interview! Matt Zimmer, a pro roadie riding with the Project Echelon Team, lives in Des Moines - and is a super good dude -he's great to have in the local group rides - from the break legs off Tuesday night world championships to the friendlier (but not slow) Saturday morning rides - so a few weeks ago I asked if he'd like to join me on a ride and do an interview during a ride - he enthusiastically agreed - with the caveat that if it didn't work, we'd have an old school sit down conversation indoors - so we got together for a ride on a beautiful Monday late afternoon, clipped on some microphones, stuck a recorder in my back pocket - and went out for a ride - so it's a bit weird - we go through some tunnels (and you can really tell!), had to pause to wait for some cars to pass at intersections - and of course, my mic sucked - but you're here to listen to Matt, not me, so settle in and enjoy my recent ride and conversation with Matt Zimmer as we talk all about his life as a cyclist and the health of cycling in the U.S.Follow Matt on instagram at Matt.Zimmer and connect with Project Echelon online at www.projectechelonracing.com.If you'd like to support Bike Talk with Dave, you can do so by rating, reviewing and sharing! Maeghan Easler found cycling, like many others, as rehab for a running injury. After some time as a successful triathlete, she decided to focus on the bike, but only for a short time, as she decided to continue with school in pursuit of further education in Oregon. The challenges of COVID led her back her home in Iowa where another running injury led her back to the bike, where she found herself pinning a number on as well as doing some Zwift racing. On Zwift she represented the U.S. at the ESport World Championships - which led her to a spot on the United Cycling Team. Caleb Swartz, while only just 23 years old now, has been a part of the national cycling scene for more than a decade, traveling the country and world, with his family, In 2021 he ventured off on his own, creating his own program as a privateer, giving him the freedom to race mountain bikes, gravel and cross across North America, and jump over to Europe when it was beneficial. His efforts were rewarded as he was named to the U.S. National Team, the youngest American taking the line at the UCI World Championships in Fayetteville, AR. Single Speed USA is more about mountain biking with friends, new and old, having fun and enjoying some local brews than it is about going fast on high tech 11-speed full suspension race bikes. Held in a different location each year, locations earned by competing in some crazy cooked up contest, this year it migrated to Deborah, Iowa, a small college town in north east Iowa surrounded by limestone bluffs, trout streams and challenging mountain bike trails. I brought my mic and camera (and a full suspension, fully geared bike… quite the opposite of everyone else there, except for at least one guy, whom you'll meet) and started recording. My goal? Take you to Deborah to enjoy the atmosphere, trails and meet some of the crazy folks who came from as far as Arizona and New England to laugh, have some beers and push their single speeds to the top of Van Peenen Bluff. There is some cussing here and there, as you might expect. It is a fully Single Speed Crowd.

Thanks to Jesse Reyerson (Spinner), who organized the event this year, for kindly welcoming me into the SSUSA Posse. To find out where and when the 2023 event is, follow Single Speed USA (SSUSA) on Instagram and Facebook.

Like many of us, Sunny Gilbert found her way to cycling through running. A mid-distance runner at Mizzou, Gilbert stood atop a great number of podiums, including at the NCAA National Championships. After completing her undergrad work she continued her studies in Boulder, CO, where she discovered triathlon (and a number of other sports, like mountain biking and snowshoe racing). She eventually discovered the cyclocross bike and rose to the top of the U.S. cyclocross scene, where she's not only taken home a silver and bronze medal at the U.S. National Cyclocross Championships, but won the 2019 Single Speed CX World Championships! That first year the pair earned their buckles by a scant four-and-a-half minutes. In their three attempts that followed they landed twice on the second step of the podium and once just inside the time limit. Daniel Hurd, or Lt. Dan, was in a dark place in 2017. Overweight, no money and no hope led him to try to end his life not once, but three times. Thankfully he was unsuccessful - and a persistent friend finally convinced him to ride a bike on which he learned to just take it “one pedal at a time.” In the five years since his last suicide attempt, he's ridden in all of the Lower 48 states, started a non-profit to help those who see no hope, and has conducted 100 suicide interventions.

I met him surfing through Iowa on RAGBRAI spreading smiles and I had to know his story. Lt. Dan has found a joy in life and works every day to put a smile on a strangers face. My hope is that our conversation puts a smile on your face, and the joy Dan found on a bike spreads and continues to spread!

In it's 49 years rolling across Iowa, The Register's Annual Bike Ride Across Iowa, or RAGBRAI, has become a rolling parade of 20,000-plus stories. It's my role to uncover some of them and share them with the world, so in 2022, my family and I packed our bikes, sleeping bags, tent (sans fly) and my microphone and set off for Sargent Bluff to roll for the next week across Iowa.

I hope you enjoy this little glimpse into some of the people that make this such a great and unique experience. Whenever I caught sight of something or someone interesting, I grabbed my mic from it's pouch and started recording! I met way more people than if I had just rolled through in search of pie, and most everyone was excited to tell their stories. So sit back, relax and enjoy this little compilation of RAGBRAI 2022, as seen through the eyes - or rather heard through the ears of - Dave.

Bike Talk with Dave: Bicycle racing, cyclocross, gravel, mountain bike, road and tech

More than 20 years ago, Scott Sumpter dreamt of a place on the internet where people could go to find fun cycling events, everything from party rides to road races. He put his fingers to work and gave the world a one-page list of hundreds of events throughout his home state; Iowa. But what he really built was a vibrant community of cyclists of all types: trail riders, criterium racers, fat bikers, mountain bikers, cyclocross racers, bar-to-bar riders and everything in between. In this episode we meet the man behind the html coding; Scott Sumpter. We hear the history, challenges, and passion that now spans two decades. BikeIowa.com is a great model for places that are not Iowa, as a way to build a strong cycling community and connect cyclists of all kinds. Thanks for listening to Bike Talk with Dave! I reached out to Katie Compton to see how she's doing in her post-cycling life, what it's like to transition out of something you've done your entire life, and find out what she's up to. now. I also wanted to talk about her experiences with WADA (the World Anti Doping Agency) and USADA (the US Anti Doping Agency). From what I'd read and heard about her, and other athlete's experiences, it's a process slanted away from the rights of athletes and to the governing bodies. Did we solve the world's problems? Is cycling now a clean sport? Was Katie treated fairly? This conversation will likely leave us all with more questions - but it's a discussion. Thanks for listening to Bike Talk with Dave!
