Our most frequent guest is back! Roger Brown brought a new training technique to UNBOUND XL and that was a mix of training, not training, waffling on whether he would do the event or not, a trip to Europe, and ultimately a successful go at the 359 mile UNBOUND XL!  We'll talk all the usual song and dance about his preparation, how it all shook out, how he bought a shirt (for free!) in the town of Alma, seeing things deep into sleep deprivation, GLP-1, and why we weren't at the Formula 1 race in Montreal this weekend. Rob Britton stole the show Saturday morning at UNBOUND. He not only passed Lachlan Morton after a 200km chase, but he forced the UNBOUND organizers to rethink their morning strategy because he crossed the line just before 9am, when there's traditionally a 50 mile roll out. He rode the nearly 360 mile in smoking fast pace! Rob is not new to racing, as he's won some of North America's biggest road races. With the switch to gravel in 2022, he's has big results in the LTGP and plenty of other big events. With success at Badlands, the BC Epic, and others, the ultra distance is nothing new to Rob either. Taylor Lideen is a a professional off-road bike racer with an extensive resume of strong two-wheeled results. But he's far more than a rider. This is hands down one of my favorite and most meaningful conversations to date.  In this episode of The Bounce Forward Podcast, Taylor and I will explore his struggles with anxiety and depression, while also diving into his mission to be a mental health advocate. From wins and podiums ultra endurance races like 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo and Unbound XL, to Marathon National Championships, True Grit and Rule of Three, to spending weeks at a time in bed when in the midst of a mental health episode, we'll discuss how Taylor is shifting his mindset, courageously and passionately bouncing forward day after day.  Taylor Lideen is not only a testament to a resilient and tenacious human that is living the BA Way (the Be Audacious Way), but he's the personification of what it looks like to bounce forward—not one time from an injury, but every day, while navigating depression and anxiety.  In this episode, Taylor and I share our stories and struggles with depression, getting raw, real and vulnerable, in hopes of truly connecting, while destigmatizing depression and mental health challenges. The guards are down, the masks are off, and we both share some dark times and deep stories from the depths of despair. Anyone who has or knows a family member or close friend who has experienced depression, anxiety or mental health challenges will relate to the waves we ride in this episode, and I'm pretty sure that you'll find Taylor's story to be a lifeline, buoying us up when the waves are crashing down.  Taylor's website: https://www.taylorlideen.com/ Taylor's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tlideen/ Taylor's Film: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BoTCH2oEGUk Leadville 100 Fundraiser: firstdescents.org/fundraiser/ Website: beaudacious.com Michael's Instagram: @michaelleachba Show's Instagram: @thebounceforward This episode was powered by The Bicycle Station

Payson caught up with two of the top riders to get the lowdown from inside the men's and women's fields. We also hear from some of the riders across the other categories, from 50-milers to the Unbound XL.Payson and Pete Stetina discuss how the men's race played out, including Lachlan Morton's crowd-pleaser of a win, how Gravel World Champ Matej Mohorič ended up being less of a threat than expected, and why starting separately from the amateurs and elite women actually impacted the race in a big way. Lauren De Crescenzo joins Payson to talk about her ill-fated solo breakaway, why the new rules for the women's race didn't go far enough, and which Grand Prix riders over and under-performed. Taylor Lideen on missing out on the Grand Prix and starting the season with a bang

After participating in the Life Time Grand Prix in its first two years, Taylor Lideen missed out on a spot this year. While that might leave some riders struggling for motivation, it's done the opposite for him. Two weeks ago, at Sea Otter (the first Grand Prix race of the season), he snagged 6th place, just seconds off the podium. The next weekend, he placed 6th at Whiskey Off Road. In February, he and Lachlan Morton set a decisive record at 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo. Taylor attributes these results to multiple factors, including a brand new approach to training that has put him in the best shape of his career. Without the pressure of having to wrestle for points at all the Grand Prix races this year, he's pursuing an ambitious and varied schedule, including Unbound XL, Leadville, and Vapor Trail.Taylor sat down with Payson in Bentonville this week to talk about missing out on the Grand Prix, why his new training methods might be controversial for some, and why seat tube angle was one of the things he was most excited about when he joined Allied this year. They also talk about the exacting approach to nutrition that helped him win Unbound XL in 2021 and the time he came face-to-face with a mountain lion on a training ride.Instagram: @theadventurestacheYouTube: Payson McElveen

Ever since he was a child, Taylor Lideen knew he experienced the world differently. Even before he knew that he suffered from depression and anxiety, he noticed that his emotions seemed to run higher than other people's. As a teen, he struggled with his mental health even as he built a  successful career as a cyclist. Over the years, he's won 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo and Unbound XL, and is competing in the Life Time Grand Prix for the second time this year. But his bouts with crippling depression have been a consistent presence in his life, both on and off the bike. Last year, he released a film, Shifting Mindset, in which he opens up for the first time about his struggles with mental health. In this week's episode, Taylor talks about navigating depression and anxiety as a child, and how his love of cycling was both an escape and a trigger. He talks about how meeting his wife Mary in high school changed his life, how his relationship with his dad was caught up in his anxiety about attaining race results, and the therapy he credits with saving his life. Since speaking openly about his battle with mental health, Taylor says he's felt a sense of relief. He tells Payson why he felt it was the right time to address his struggles publicly, and how he's hoping others might benefit from hearing his story. Instagram: @theadventurestache

Ted King returns to the show to talk about the string of setbacks that left his career in limbo for the past couple of years. Some of those hurdles have been public, such as the numerous broken bones, while others have been largely private, such as an unexplained blood clot that has left him on blood thinners for the foreseeable future. The past two years have been a series of stopping and starting, from hospital visits and rehab to short-lived comebacks. This year, however, he's back to racing, and he's chosen a schedule that looks a lot different from his pre-2021 events lineup. In this conversation, Ted tells Payson about the rollercoaster of the past two years, including some unexpected upsides. He talks about what it was like to line up in the age-group category instead of with the pros at this year's Mid South, how he used his tentative race schedule last year to raise money for charity, and why the cycling community has kept him coming back to races even when he was still processing his most recent health scare. He also explains why he's decided to pursue an alternative schedule this year in which he will compete in ultra-long distance races like Unbound XL and the Great Divide instead of lining up for the Grand Prix.  Instagram: @theadventurestache

Dylan's name has come up on the podcast many times and many of you have sent in request to have him on the show. Is it because he is heir to a salt empire? Maybe it's his epic mustache? Or his high level mechanic skills? Seeking answers to some of these tough questions I pointed my van in the direction of Arkansas to meet up with this international man of mystery at the Meteor Cafe in Bentonville, AR. When I interviewed Lael in Bentonville for Episode 10 she talked about a local that made a route from Colorado to the start of Unbound XL in Emporia, KS. That "local" was Dylan Morton who would go on to ride to Emporia with Lael and compete as well, completing the course in 25h 16m. During the pandemic he found himself living with Lael and Rue in Alaska and working with Pepper Cook at the Anchorage bike shop. Dylan is a guy who says "yes" and this podcast is a reflection of that. He is also no stranger to big efforts on the bike. Most recently he won the Utah Mixed Epic with a time of 7d, 16h, 38m which is well known to be a challenging course. He has also done an ITT of Arkansas High Country, completed the Atlas Mtn Race, among others! He is no slouch on the bike and he's a pretty darn good mechanic too. On this episode Dylan shares his passion for cycling, the bikepacking community, and a well dialed bike to adventure on. Episode Sponsors These episodes aren't possible without support! In this fourth and final Unbound recap episode, Payson talks to Jonathan Levin, the last rider to cross the finish line. Jonathan decided to race Unbound with a few friends on a whim, having trained less than intended and with less knowledge of the course than they thought. In spite of never having ridden more than a hundred miles beforehand, they all reached the finish (with less than 10 minutes to spare) before the 3am cutoff. In this conversation, Jonathan talks about why he decided to take on such a big challenge without much prior experience, the aspect of the race that they got right, and why he might be aiming for the 350 mile Unbound XL race next. He talks about some of the more memorable moments from those 200 miles, including hallucinations, a quick creek swim, and a narrowly avoided crash at the finish. And they're joined by Jonathan's friend, Chris, who crewed for Jonathan and his friends and got more than he bargained for. Jonathan also talks about his professional life, where he runs a global company that develops investigation and compliance software for cryptocurrencies, and was listed on the Fortune Magazine's "40 Under 40" list.

In our third recap episode of Unbound Gravel, Payson sits down to talk with two racers from the Unbound XL, the 350 mile race, Will Loevner and Amanda Nauman. Will Loevner finished Unbound XL in second place, in spite of being younger than any of his competitors and a relative unknown at the start of the race. However, this achievement is only a fraction of the story. After crashing around mile 200 in the middle of the night, he rode the remaining 150 miles one-handed, with a broken hand and a duct taped laceration on his arm that would later require stitches. In this conversation, he explains why stopping was never an option.Amanda Nauman had previously raced the 200 mile race five times, winning twice and coming in second twice. She talks about why she decided to make the leap to XL and how the longer race compares the 200 culturally, physically, and mentally.
