This week on the show we have a special two-part episode with professional cyclist Maddy Nutt. We first hear from Maddy live from Emporia in the days leading into her Unbound XL race. Maddy talks about her win at the Traka 560, and why she was drawn to gravel to begin with. She also goes through a few pre-race details for Unbound, including her bike setup and the recipe for her favorite race day breakfast. Kathryn then catches up with Maddy after she is back home in London following her second place finish at the Unbound XL. Maddy goes over some of the highlights, and lowlights, of her race including dodging lightning strikes and hiking through mud. Listen in to find out if Maddy actually had fun during the Unbound XL, and if she will go for the cast iron frying pan.Follow Maddy on Instagram @maddynutty and check out her YouTube channel @maddynuttRegister for Feisty Fest at https://feisty.co/events/Follow us on Instagram:@feistycycling@feisty_mediaGirls Gone Gravel Website:https://www.girlsgonegravel.com/Support our Partners:SILCA: Use the code FeistyUnbound2026 for 15% off at https://silca.cc/en-ca Wahoo: Learn about the ELEMNT ROAM 3 at https://bit.ly/4tk2j23Momentous: Use code GIRLSGONEGRAVEL for up to 35% off your first order at livemomentous.comTifosi: Use the code FEISTY2026 for 20% off at tifosioptics.comRegister for Feisty Fest at https://feisty.co/events/

This week we kicked things off with Eric's experience crewing for Heather Jackson at Unbound XL, 350 miles of gravel, mud, and racing through the night. Josh Amberger also made a stunning gravel debut with a fourth-place finish, and we had some thoughts on that. Then we went through listener questions. We also talked the Escape from Alcatraz donut run, compression shorts, and the best perks of being a pro athlete (or pro athlete adjacent). This week we discussed:Eric supporting Heather Jackson at Unbound XL and Josh Amberger's surprise fourth-place finishWhat it's like when podcast listeners know more about you than you know about themPanicking in an open water swim and how to recover your composure mid-raceOff-road triathlon etiquette, do you have to stop and let faster riders pass?Racing a tri bike you've never ridden before: smart gamble or bad idea?Mile repeats vs. kilometer repeats, does interval length actually matter?Sodium and cramping: preloading, in-race electrolytesWearing compression shorts under your bibsWill 32-inch wheels ever make it into triathlon?Favorite perks of being a professional (or pro-adjacent) triathleteA big thank you to our podcast supporters who keep the podcast alive! This week, James and Will are joined by ex-road pro turned gravel ace, Rob Britton. Born in Saskatchewan in Canada in 1984, Rob turned pro in 2010 with American team Bissell Pro Cycling and for the next 12 seasons raced at Continental level, arguably enjoying his best years with Rally Cycling (not that Raleigh, although he did race for that Raleigh in 2013), where he won the Tour of Utah, his second Tour of Gila in New Mexico and the Canadian National Time-Trial title. Given such strong showings in such hot, long and multi-day races, Rob was a safe bet when he – like lots of his road colleagues – moved into gravel. At first riding as a privateer – sponsored with a bit of kit but essentially riding team-less – Rob finished 6th in his first big gravel race, Unbound, in 2022, then the following year won Badlands – all 800km and 16,000 vertical metres of it. 2023 saw an incredible result at Traka, where he finished second behind fellow ex-road pro Pete Stetina, however arguably his best result so far came when the then 40-year-old beat Lachlan Morton at Unbound XL, finishing the 578km course at an astonishing average speed of 32.4kmh, smashing the course record by 12 minutes in the process.Such rides have seen Rob become part of the OVRLND adventure team, with backing from Easton Cycling, Castelli and Factor bikes, who's radical aero suspension gravel bike, the Sarana, Rob rode at this year's Traka 560.Whatever bike Rob rides he manages to make gruelling long-distance look easy, but as we chat about in this episode, his journey in cycling has been anything but, fraught with the difficulties of racing for smaller teams, the US's ever dwindling race calendar, and having to reinvent himself as a gravel racer, from canvassing for sponsors to looking after his own bikes. We caught up with Rob in Italy ahead of racing at The Hills Gravel Race in Treviso in March.Chat begins at 6.54-----------------This episode is brought to you by the Hammerhead Karoo GPS bike computer. Rob Britton's Unbound Gravel XL win and the types of rides he wants to do next

A run-in with a badger, a gentlemanly pee break, a spectacular sunset and some amazing competition—those were just a few of the features of Rob Britton's record-breaking Unbound Gravel XL win. It set his rough gravel season right, even if after more than two weeks following the race, the Victoria rider was still not fully recovered. Before the big event in Kansas, Britton's season wasn't going well. Bad luck, mostly, led to a series of results that left the Victoria rider frustrated. To change things up, he registered for the 350-mile version of Unbound. At 3 p.m. on May 30, he set off with a group of riders that included Ted King, Laurens ten Dam, Robin Gemperle and the rider Britton jokingly refers to as Gravel Jesus, Lachlan Morton. The next day, 17:49:51 after the race began, Britton crossed the finish line, winning Unbound XL with a record-setting time.In this episode, recorded just before gravel nationals in Water Valley, Alta., (but with a short clip following that event), Britton gets into the details of the race, including gear, fuelling and some of the tactical decisions he made. He discusses his long-time relationship with Lachlan Morton, which goes back to some of the Australian's earliest road races in North America. Today, there's a “Morton effect” on gravel racing that even had an influence on Britton's race beyond the one-on-one duelling on the rough roads of Kansas.Back in 2017, when Britton was a pro roadie, he won the Tour of Utah stage race. How does the biggest win of his road career compare with his victory at gravel's main event? How long does he think his Unbound XL record will last? And does his win in Emporia, Kansas, change anything or open any new doors for Britton? Find out.

Rob Britton stole the show Saturday morning at UNBOUND. He not only passed Lachlan Morton after a 200km chase, but he forced the UNBOUND organizers to rethink their morning strategy because he crossed the line just before 9am, when there's traditionally a 50 mile roll out. He rode the nearly 360 mile in smoking fast pace! Rob is not new to racing, as he's won some of North America's biggest road races. With the switch to gravel in 2022, he's has big results in the LTGP and plenty of other big events. With success at Badlands, the BC Epic, and others, the ultra distance is nothing new to Rob either. From wins and podiums ultra endurance races like 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo and Unbound XL, to Marathon National Championships, True Grit and Rule of Three, to spending weeks at a time in bed when in the midst of a mental health episode, we'll discuss how Taylor is shifting his mindset, courageously and passionately bouncing forward day after day.  Taylor Lideen is not only a testament to a resilient and tenacious human that is living the BA Way (the Be Audacious Way), but he's the personification of what it looks like to bounce forward—not one time from an injury, but every day, while navigating depression and anxiety.  In this episode, Taylor and I share our stories and struggles with depression, getting raw, real and vulnerable, in hopes of truly connecting, while destigmatizing depression and mental health challenges. The guards are down, the masks are off, and we both share some dark times and deep stories from the depths of despair. This year's Unbound was one of the most dynamic and exciting in the event's history, featuring two new winners, separate starts for the elite men and women, and a nine-up sprint at the women's finish. Payson caught up with two of the top riders to get the lowdown from inside the men's and women's fields. We also hear from some of the riders across the other categories, from 50-milers to the Unbound XL.Payson and Pete Stetina discuss how the men's race played out, including Lachlan Morton's crowd-pleaser of a win, how Gravel World Champ Matej Mohorič ended up being less of a threat than expected, and why starting separately from the amateurs and elite women actually impacted the race in a big way. Lauren De Crescenzo joins Payson to talk about her ill-fated solo breakaway, why the new rules for the women's race didn't go far enough, and which Grand Prix riders over and under-performed. Taylor Lideen on missing out on the Grand Prix and starting the season with a bang

After participating in the Life Time Grand Prix in its first two years, Taylor Lideen missed out on a spot this year. While that might leave some riders struggling for motivation, it's done the opposite for him. Two weeks ago, at Sea Otter (the first Grand Prix race of the season), he snagged 6th place, just seconds off the podium. The next weekend, he placed 6th at Whiskey Off Road. In February, he and Lachlan Morton set a decisive record at 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo. Taylor attributes these results to multiple factors, including a brand new approach to training that has put him in the best shape of his career. Without the pressure of having to wrestle for points at all the Grand Prix races this year, he's pursuing an ambitious and varied schedule, including Unbound XL, Leadville, and Vapor Trail.Taylor sat down with Payson in Bentonville this week to talk about missing out on the Grand Prix, why his new training methods might be controversial for some, and why seat tube angle was one of the things he was most excited about when he joined Allied this year. They also talk about the exacting approach to nutrition that helped him win Unbound XL in 2021 and the time he came face-to-face with a mountain lion on a training ride.Instagram: @theadventurestacheYouTube: Payson McElveen

Taylor Lideen on navigating depression and anxiety as a professional cyclist

Ever since he was a child, Taylor Lideen knew he experienced the world differently. Even before he knew that he suffered from depression and anxiety, he noticed that his emotions seemed to run higher than other people's. As a teen, he struggled with his mental health even as he built a  successful career as a cyclist. Over the years, he's won 24 Hours in the Old Pueblo and Unbound XL, and is competing in the Life Time Grand Prix for the second time this year. But his bouts with crippling depression have been a consistent presence in his life, both on and off the bike. Last year, he released a film, Shifting Mindset, in which he opens up for the first time about his struggles with mental health. In this week's episode, Taylor talks about navigating depression and anxiety as a child, and how his love of cycling was both an escape and a trigger. He talks about how meeting his wife Mary in high school changed his life, how his relationship with his dad was caught up in his anxiety about attaining race results, and the therapy he credits with saving his life. Since speaking openly about his battle with mental health, Taylor says he's felt a sense of relief. He tells Payson why he felt it was the right time to address his struggles publicly, and how he's hoping others might benefit from hearing his story. Instagram: @theadventurestache
