In this episode of Roll On, Cole Paton, we'll dive into Cole's 2024 season—exploring the highs and lows of the Lifetime Grand Prix, Marathon Nationals and Marathon Worlds. This conversation also explores Cole's relationship with fellow racer and Olympian Savilia Blunk, lessons learned from ‘going for it' with friend Bradyn Lange at Chequamegon, and the insight that inspired the rest of his season after taking a more conservative approach (holding back) at Sea Otter.  We'll revisit Cole's frustrating end to the season in Bentonville, why he dug so deep when sick at The Rad and what's motivating Cole most going into 2025.  Raw, real and vulnerable, Cole shows up for Roll On as he does for race day—holding nothing back and giving listeners a look inside the mind and heart of one of the top off-road cyclists in North America.  On a side-note, we had this episode scheduled for publication on November 20, but tragedy struck my family the evening before. There's a multitude of reasons I chose to team up with Cole for this partnership, and all I can say, is that he's been showing up for me and my family in a bigger way than he'll ever know. Sincere, authentic and true—that's the Cole I know. The straw the stirs the drink—he's a straight up animator on race day.  I've said it before and I'll say it again, Cole Paton is the real deal—and he's so much more than a bike racer. He's a friend, partner, son, uncle, brother and down to earth, humble and full of grace dude, who just so happens to be one of the fastest men on two wheels.  We hope you enjoy the listen!  Cole's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/colepaton/ Website: beaudacious.com Michael's Instagram: @michaelleachba Show's Instagram: @thebounceforward

Melisa Rollins is our esteemed guest today. She's been in the game for a handful of years, but she's quickly turning heads, especially here in 2024. Earning the most acclaim was a smashing victory at Leadville, the hallowed 100 mile mountain bike race scraping across some of Colorado's highest peaks. She just won Iceman Cometh. She was second in the life time Grand Prix. She's won Chequamegon, she's podiumed the overall at Redlands. She has seven Leadvilles to her name. And she's seemingly just getting warmed up! On this week's episode, we're covering round five the Life Time Grand Prix which took place last weekend in Trinidad, Colorado. We hear from listeners who attended the race followed by Payson's breakdown of the current points standings and some of the possible podium scenarios that could unfold in the final round in Bentonville later this month. Payson also chats to two breakout riders at the Rad, Finn Gullickson and Cecily Decker. At just 24, Finn decided to step away from pursuing a road career in Europe to pursue off-road racing in the U.S. He talks about why he left road racing, the frustrating middle part of his 2024 season, and how he managed to place sixth overall and fifth in the Grand Prix points in Trinidad. Cecily is also a recent convert to gravel. Having been medically retired from ski racing while still in college, she quickly learned she had a talent for cycling. She tells Payson about when she knew she was fast on a bike, how a crash at Chequamegon dashed her hopes of a mid-season reset, and how she placed 3rd at the Rad. Before all that, however, Payson provides some life (and podcast) updates and shares some thoughts on this weekend's Gravel World Championships in Belgium.00:00:00 Introduction00:03:35 Life/podcast update00:08:30 Gravel World Championships 00:17:39 Listener recaps from the Rad00:23:01 Points analysis00:40:34 Finn Gullickson1:03:50 Cecily DeckerInstagram: @theadventurestacheYouTube: Payson McElveen

Enticed by the mountain bike trails she could see underneath her skis as she ascended the lift at her local ski area, Jenna Rinehart went from carving turns on on snow to carving turns on dirt. In her early mountain biking career, she often stood atop the podium at what is now one of the oldest mountain bike races in the country: the Chequamegon Fat Tire Festival, as well as many other midwest mountain bike races. In 2011 she and her husband bought the Mankato, Minnesota bike shop they worked at and went from starting lines to repair stands and the showroom floor. Nearly a dozen years later Jenna found the time to jump in some local races and ultimately found herself on the starting line of Chequamegon. Her previous form had never left and she did well enough to earn a spot in the Lifetime Grand Prix. After an impressive sixth place overall in 2023, she is working hard for another top-ten finish in 2024. We talked as she has two Lifetime GP races remaining, plus the UCI Gravel World Championships in Belgium. Jenna races on a Specialized Crux on gravel and an Epic on dirt, fills her tires with Orange Seal sealant and rides for the Mazda Orange Seal Off Road team. Melisa Rollins was born to race the Leadville 100; although if you had asked her in highschool if this was true, she would have disagreed. Melisa's parents have been racing the Leadville 100 MTB since she was just a year old, so the race runs deep in her blood. She herself has started the race seven times, and crossed the finish line 7 times, including in 2024 where she won the elite women's race. Melisa also completed the Lead Challenge in 2018, a series of 5 races in Leadville including both the 100 MTB and 100 Run races. A feat that most of us find hard just to wrap our heads around! Focussing on the bike, Melisa signed with Team Twenty24 in 2021 right after racing the Leadville 100 MTB that year, with a dream that she would one day come back and win the race. Supported by her team, Melisa raced in the Life Time Grand Prix in 2022, but stepped away for the 2023 season to focus on gaining race experience on the road circuit with her team. This has paid off for Melisa in dividends as she has returned to the Grand Prix in 2024. Following her win in Leadville this year, Melisa finished 9th at Chequamegon this past weekend and plans on finishing the season strong with two more events remaining in the Grand Prix. Last week, Lachlan Morton finished the 2,670-mile Tour Divide in just 12 days, 12 hours, and 21 minutes, more than a day faster than the officially recognized record. He also did it in the midst of the Life Time Grand Prix, between Leadville and Chequamegon. This weekend, Payson caught up with Lachlan in Wisconsin just hours after completing Chequamegon to talk about his experience. From being ready to throw in the towel to marveling at the breathtaking beauty around him, Lachlan discusses the moments that stand out the most from his 12 days on the trail. What is up party people. Boy do we have a show for y'all today. With Tyler and Scott both unable to record this week we figured what better time to bring a on a guest. So we put up a poll on the Instawaves asking y'all who you wanted to hear on the show this week and taking the top spot was none other than friend of the pod Kerry Werner. Unfortunately, we weren't able to nail him down as he had some bike build wizardry to conduct before the big Northwoods showdown Saturday but we made up for it with landing not one but TWO guests instead. That's right, we were joined by Midwest native Alexey Vermeulen and the Swiss beast Konny Losser. In this episode we chat Chequamegon 40; the iconic 40 mile MTB race in the Northwoods of Wisconsin and the fourth stop of the Life Time Grand Prix. First up on the podcast is Kelsey Urban, World Cup XC racer and van lifer. Kelsey races for Team 31 - Ibis and following an intense WC season, decided to join the fun on the US off-road scene and finish off her season with a muddy Chequamegon 40. We chat about the challenges of coming home to van life between travel in Europe, her WC season, her impressions of the weekend in Wisconsin and blending domestic racing with international WCs. I really enjoyed catching up with Kelsey after spending two weeks with her in Puerto Rico at the start of the season as she joined MFR for an early season race trip.  Bradyn Lange, men's winner of the Cheq 40, joins us for his first ever podcast interview. Bradyn is the youngest athlete in the LTGP and is now one of only two athletes that has won a race in the GP. We chat about how the race unfolded, his background in the sport and why he has been living that van life for the past few years but doesn't really 'gram about it. We hope you enjoy the show! Join Cherell Jordin and Stuart Anderson as they spend an hour with professional cyclist Melisa Rollins for episode #38.  Intro by Melisa's coach, Sarah Kaufman: Melisa was introduced to riding by her parents. You might be surprised to know that initially she hated it! It wasn't until turning 18 and discovering how her work ethic rewarded her on the bike that she began to enjoy it.  Melisa came to me for coaching in 2019, burned out from running and riding and with only a budding interest in racing. I recognized her willingness to work, and her coachability - a trait that encapsulates a lot of qualities, but to me largely means humble and curious. It took about a year to dig Melisa out of the hole she was in but after that, she really started to become the star on the bike that she is now. I have learned so much from coaching Melisa and, like everyone, I am so excited to see what else she can do.  To date, some of her palmares include: wins at 2021 Chequamegon and Firecracker 50, 2021 PCP2P and Leadboat (Leadville and SBT) 2nd places, BWR 2020 5th. One thing to note here - as part of her Leadboat podium, she was 6th at Leadville. That may not sound like a huge result but the field this year was stacked - to date only 12 women have gone under eight hours at Leadville and six of them did it this year. Melisa was one of those six.

Jane Johnston Schoolcraft is the first known American Indian literary writer, the first known Indian woman writer, the first known Indian poet, and the first known poet to write poems in a Native American language. A poet who wrote in at least two languages, navigated several cultures and expressed her pride of belonging to the Ojibwe (Chippewa) people in both English and Ojibwe poems, Jane Johnston Schoolcraft invites us to reconsider existing categories for understanding American and American Indian literacy. Schoolcraft (her English name) or Bamewawagezhikaquay (her Ojibwe name, meaning “Woman of the Sound the Stars Make Rushing Through the Sky”), was born as one of eight children in 1800 in Sault Ste. Marie in today’s state of Michigan, then a cross-cultural hub of British, French, Canadian and American Indian influence. Her mother, Ozhaguscodaywayquay, was born in Chequamegon in the mid 1770s in the northern part of what is now Wisconsin as the daughter of Waubojeeg, a renowned Ojibwe warrior and chief also known for his skills in story-telling and son; her Irish-born father, John Johnston was a fur trader who greatly valued books. Jane was educated at home, reading widely and speaking and writing Ojibwe, English and French, with a brief and difficult interlude with an aunt in Ireland where she might have attended school. In 1823 she married Henry Rowe Schoolcraft (1793-1864), who has become known as the first person to record a large body of American Indian stories. They had three children but their first-born, William Henry, died at age two, and one daughter was stillborn. With Jane’s assistance Henry published The Literary Voyager or Muzzenyegun, which included some of Jane’s writings without attribution. When Jane died unexpectedly in 1842, she had written literary prose pieces and poems, only a small number of which had appeared in a handwritten magazine produced by her husband.  I spoke with Professor Robert Dale Parker of the University of Illinois, who discovered, edited and published Jane Johnston Schoolcraft's poetry in The Sound the Stars Make Rushing Through the Sky: The Writings of Jane Johnston Schoolcraft, as well as Changing is not Vanishing: A Collection of American Indian Poetry to 1930, in addition to books on Faulkner, and on critical theory. We talked about the ambiguous status of being "the first," about Native American poetry, about Jane's life, and about several of her moving, searing and strangely timely poems. Her beautiful poem, "Sweet Willy," was recorded in a gorgeous rendition by Dave Stanaway and Susan Askwith; they graciously granted permission to use this song here to bring Schoolcraft's poetry to an ever wider audience.  ** "Sweet Willy, My Boy · Dave Stanaway and Susan Askwith · John Johnston: His Life and Times in the Fur Trade Era ℗ 2005 Dave Stanaway and Susan Askwith Released on: 2005-01-01  (Song consent to be used on "Think About It Podcast" by Dave Stanaway and Susan Askwith on November 25th, 2020 by email to Ulrich Baer) ** /////////////// Follow us: TWITTER - @ulibaer  INSTAGRAM - @uli.baer  (THINK ABOUT IT PODCAST) - @thinkaboutit.podcast ROBERT DALE PARKER - @robertdaleparker //////////////// Listen to the Podcast on: APPLE PODCASTS - Think About It Podcast SPOTIFY - Think About It Podcast YOUTUBE: Ulrich Baer  //////////////// Thanks for listening! :)

Episode 11: Bayfield County Wild Talks with Fred Erickson of Erickson's Orchard

Bayfield County Wild

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 2, 2018 26:22

On this episode of Bayfield County Wild, Co-hosts Nancy Christopher and Mary Motiff, director of Bayfield County Tourism, speak with Fred Erickson, the third generation owner of Erickson’s Orchard, one of the area’s oldest and largest apple orchards and berry farms. They discuss the history of Fred’s family business and the upcoming Strawberry Festival, as well as other fun events happening throughout the month of July. Wisconsin Lake Superior Scenic Byway It’s a spectacular time of year to enjoy the outdoors in Bayfield County! One of the best ways to explore the area is to drive the Wisconsin Lake Superior Scenic Byway, a 70-mile stretch of State Highway 13 that goes up and around the Bayfield peninsula. But don’t just assume you’re getting the whole experience from the road alone: What’s truly magical is the natural, cultural, geographical and historical beauty surrounding it. There are kiosks within each community along the byway, which provide maps, guides and other information so take your time, pull over and explore! More at www.lakesuperiorbyway.org. Experience Bayfield Culture There are many ways to experience the history and culture of Bayfield County during the summer, including: The reservation of the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa is located three miles north of Bayfield. Experiencing the serenity of Frog Bay Tribal National Park, the lakefront campgrounds and the fun to be had at Legendary Waters Resort and Casino are all recommended. The Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center is open daily and has interactive exhibits, an observation tower, movie theater, historical archives, gift shop and more. The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is truly a sight to behold. The National Lakeshore is home to the largest collection of lighthouses in North America, and there are tours and cruises available to give you incredible views. The visitor center at the Park headquarters (located in a beautiful old brownstone building) also shows a great documentary about the islands, and offers other resources and interpretive opportunities. A new visitor center is currently being built at Little Sand Bay. A huge part of the history and culture of Bayfield County can be experienced at Big Top Chautauqua, a legendary music and performance venue. Their house shows are based on the history and culture of the area, telling a story and entertaining attendees with songs and visuals. This is all above and beyond their vast concert lineup every summer, attracting some of the biggest names in music! Erickson’s Orchard Fred Erickson’s grandparents, Martin and Christine, planted their first apple tree around the turn of the century (circa 1910). In 1954, Fred’s parents Jim and Muriel took over the orchard, with Muriel crafting her renowned apple cider donuts. Today, Fred and his family have about 15 different apple varieties on the oldest and largest apple and berry farm in Bayfield County, as well as plums, peaches, strawberries, blueberries and raspberries. They also have a couple of shops on premises, plus they make about 14,000 gallons of apple cider per year through their processing plant! Homemade jams, jellies and their new hard cider are also available.  USA Today has named the Bayfield Apple Festival one of the 10 best fall harvest fests in the country. Fred’s dad Jim had come up with the idea for the festival, which launched in 1963, due to a flat tire. While broken down in Duluth on the way to North Dakota, people gathered around to try Jim’s apples and they couldn’t believe they were grown in Bayfield. So instead of bringing apples out of town, Jim had the thought of putting on a festival to attract people to Bayfield. Now, the festival brings over 60,000 people to Bayfield and it’s truly a community-wide event. The Strawberry Festival dates back to 1936 but had not been a consistent annual event. About two years ago, Fred brought the fest back to coincide with the peak of the year’s berry crop. The festival takes place July 6, 7 and 8 this year, and features specialty food items, vendors, artisans, live music and anything that has to do with strawberries. For more information, visit EricksonOrchard.com or follow them on Facebook. July Events There is so much to do in Bayfield County during the dog days of summer! An underrated gem, the Namekagon River has very little development along its banks, so those on the river feel like they are truly out in the wilderness.
