Nick was diagnosed with cancer in 2005 after his Freshman year at Hofstra University. Today on the show we have Tom Marechek. Tom is Syracuse Lacrosse legend. Someone I feel needs no introduction. He’s the fifth-leading goal scorer in NCAA history with 182 goals. A four-time All-American and a member of both the NCAA and the US Lacrosse Hall of Fame. He is now the director of Lacrosse at IMG Academy. Tom and I got a chance to talk about a lot of things like what led him to Syracuse, Mastering Behind the Back, Emulating his Idols, and his new role at the IMG Academy.
Today on the show we have the head coach of Army Men’s Lacrosse, Joe Alberici. Coach Alberici is a graduate of Alfred College where he was a two time All-American and a 3-time Captain. He started his coaching career at Alfred as a graduate assistant before moving to be the head coach at SUNY Oneonta. He then became the assistant coach at West Point for two seasons before taking the assistant coaching job at Duke University. He stayed at Duke for 9 seasons before returning to West Point to be named the Head Coach of Army Lacrosse. He’s been at Army for more than 14 seasons and in 2008 was named the Patriot League Coach of the year. Coach and I got a chance to talk about a lot of different things like becoming a better leader, instilling confidence, being pragmatic, mental & emotional toughness and much more.
Today on the show we have the Head Coach of the Chaos in the Premiere Lacrosse League, Andy Towers. Coach Towers was a graduate of Brown University where he was a 3x All-American for two different positions. Once as an attackman and twice as a midfielder. He still holds the record for goals in a single season and career goals. After college he started his coaching career as an assistant at Brown before moving on Yale, then Fairfield. He was the head coach at Hartford College for one year before taking the assistant position at Dartmouth. He then became the Head Coach at Dartmouth in 2009. He's now the Head Coach of the Chaos Lacrosse Club. Coach Towers and I got a chance to talk about a lot of things like having a competitive spirit, the importance of rest and recovery, appreciating opportunities, what his experience has been like in the PLL so far, and much much more.
Today on the show we have Chazz Woodson. Chazz is a graduate of Brown University where he was a two-time All-Ivy League selection and a two-time All-New England player. Chazz started his professional career in the MLL with the Lizards, before moving to the Canons, the LA Riptide, the Machine, and the Bayhawks. He was a 2008 MLL All-Star and the winner of the best trick competition. He now runs Nation United, a club program devoted to promoting diversity within the sport. Today on the show we have the Head Coach of Bucknell Women's Lacrosse, Remington Steele. Coach Steele was a graduate of Limestone University where his team made 3 Final Four appearances. He started his coaching career at Limestone before moving on to be the lead assistant at Vermont. He then went to Furman where he was the goalies' coach, defensive coordinator, and the recruiting coordinator. Then, in the summer of 2017, he took over as the head coach of Bucknell Women's Lacrosse. Coach Steele and I got a chance to talk about a lot of things like learning by doing, getting buy-in, working towards a common goal, and much more. Here's my interview with Coach Steele.
Today on the show we have the head coach of Johns Hopkins Women's Lacrosse, Janine Tucker. Coach Tucker is a graduate of Loyola where she's a member of the Greyhound Athletic Hall of Fame. She started her coaching career as an assistant at Loyola for 4 seasons before jumping at the chance to be the head coach at Hopkins. She's now been the head coach there for 24 seasons and has since become the all-time winningest coach at Hopkins. Her teams have had double win totals 20 of the last 24 seasons with 6 DI tournament appearances, 3 ECAC Championship Game appearances, and in 2016 she became the 9th coach in NCAA DI history to break 250 wins. Coach Tucker and I got a chance to talk about a lot of things on today's show like letting players play, the importance of being competitive and compassionate, being organized and much more.
Today on the show we have the head coach of Georgetown Women's Lacrosse, Ricky Fried. Coach Fried is a graduate of UMBC where he was an All-American midfielder and team captain. He started his college coaching career at Johns Hopkins. He was there for 9 seasons before moving on to be the head coach at Georgetown. In 16 season at Georgetown, his teams have won 7 Big East Regular Season Titles, with 8 trips to the NCAA tournament. He's coach 22 All-Americans including a national goalie of the year, two big east attackers of the year, three midfielders of the year, and 5 defensive players of the year. And, his staff has twice been named Big East Staff of the year. Coach Fried and I got a chance to talk about a lot of different things like developing game-sense, focusing on the bigger picture, learning to listen, the importance of player individuals, and much more.

Coach Coon is a graduate of Nazareth College where he was a 2-time Captain, a 4-time All-American, and a 2-time DIII Goalie of the Year. He then went on the play professionally for the Rochester Knighthawks and the Rochester Rattlers. He started his coaching career at Nazereth before moving on to be an assistant coach at Umass, and then to RIT where he is the winningest Coach in program history. As of the recording of this intro, RIT is currently 20-1 overall and is set to play Williams College in the DIII Quarterfinals. Today on the show we have the head coach of Albany Women's Lacrosse, Katie Rowan. Katie is a graduate of Syracuse University where she was a three-time first team All-American. She holds the single-season record for points with 142, and the single-season record for assists, with 69. She was also All-Big East 4 times. Coach Rowan started her coaching career as a graduate assistant at Syracuse before moving on to be the full-time assistant at Albany. She then became the head coach at Wagner University for 3 seasons before coming back to Albany as the new head coach. Coach Rowan and I got a chance to talk about a lot of things like the importance of mentors, getting to know your players, preparing for life after lacrosse and much more.

He then went back to Dickinson to be an assistant coach, and then moved on to Hampton-Sydney. After that, he started the lacrosse program at Marymount. During his 7 seasons at Marymount, he was twice named the Capital Athletic Conference Coach of the Year. He then moved on to be the head coach at Franklin & Marshall before returning to Dickinson as head coach. During his time at Dickinson, his teams have won 4 Centennial Conference Championships and they've advanced to the elite 8 on three separate occasions. Coach Webster and I got a chance to talk about a lot of things like balance, making an impact, getting the right people on the bus, and much more.
Today on the show we have the head coach of Ursinus Men's Lacrosse, Gary Mercadante. Coach Mercadante is a graduate of Dickinson College where he was a two-time captain. He was an assistant at Ursinus for 4 seasons before moving on to launch the Lacrosse program at Delaware Valley University. In their first season, Delaware Valley Lacrosse had the most wins by a Delaware Valley team in any sport in their inaugural season, including a win in the programs first-ever game. Coach Mercadante is now in the middle of his first season back at Ursinus as Head Coach. Coach and I got a chance to talk about a lot of things like being an athlete, avoiding overwhelm, building a strong foundation, leadership, and much more.
Today on the show we have the head coach at York College, Brandon Childs. Coach Childs is a graduate of Lynchburg. During his time there he was a two-time All-American and set the school record for assists with 102. This is a record that still stands today. After he graduated he was the offensive director at Dickinson before becoming head coach at York College in 2012. In 2014 his team set a York College school record with 16 wins. Coach Childs and I got a chance to talk about a lot of things like, camaraderie, being present, team chemistry, having a moral compass, and much much more.
Today on the show we have the head women's lacrosse coach at Rutgers University, Laura Brand Sias. Coach Brand graduated from Rutgers University and is now on her 17th season as the head coach of Rutgers Lacrosse. Since taking over as head coach in 2003 her teams have appeared in six Big Ten Conference Championships. Coach Brand came to Rutgers after one season as head coach at Fairfield University where she led the stags to a 10 - 7 overall record. Coach Brand and I got a chance to talk about a lot of things like her time as the youngest head coach in all of the NCAA, some of her trials by fire, communicating her expectations, asking more of her players, and much more. Today on the show we have the Head Coach of High Point University, Jon Torpey. Coach Torpey is an alumnus of Ohio State University. After graduating he started his coaching career as an assistant at Denison College, before moving on to Goucher. He then became an assistant at Denver University where he helped build the program into a national contender. He then moved on to be an assistant and associate head Coach at Dartmouth before taking over as head coach at High Point University. Since taking over as Head Coach in 2010, it took High Point just three seasons to make the playoffs. And in 2014, Hight point won their first conference championship. As of this recording, High Point is ranked #12 in the nation with a 5-1 in 2019. He spent 7 seasons as the offensive coordinator and goalie coach at Stevens. During his time there he was named DII Assistant Coach of the Year. He then moved on to be the assistant coach at Princeton before becoming the interim head coach, and then finally being named the head coach at Princeton University. Coach Madalon and I got a chance to talk about a lot of different things like, learning to communicate, examples of senior leadership, a culture of extras, their underlying philosophy, and much more.

He then moved on the be the Head Coach at Eastern Connecticut State. He then went back to alma mater to be an assistant coach at Fairfield. After Fairfield he was the assistant coach at Lafayette before moving on to Hartford. He's now on his 6th year as the head coach at Sacred Heart. Since taking over as head coach at Sacred Heart, Coach Basti has led his team to their winningest seasons in the program's history. Today on the show we have the Head Women's Lacrosse Coach at the Naval Academy, Cindy Timchal. Coach Timchal is on her 12th season at Navy. Since bringing the program to Division I Navy has won 6 Patriot League Championships, has appeared in 6 NCAA tournaments, they made it to the Elite 8 in 2018, and in 2017 they became the first service academy team for a women's sport to make it to the final four. Before coming to Navy Coach Timchal was the head coach at Maryland. During her time at Maryland, the Terps won 7 national championships in a row, 8 in total. She's been national coach of the year 2 times, 4- time ACC Coach of the Year, and she's been inducted into the Delaware County sports hall of fame. Coach and I got a chance to talk about a lot of different things like developing a culture of competitiveness, team concepts, pre-practice, and much more.
Today on the show we have Navy Men's Lacrosse Head Coach, Rick Sowell. Coach Sowell is graduate of Washington College where he was a two time All-American and National Midfielder of the year. During his time there he won two national championships. He started off his coaching career at Washington College as assistant to the 1986 national championship team. He then moved on to become an assistant coach at Georgetown before taking the head coach job at Dartmouth University. HIs final season at Dartmouth, Coach Sowell's team won their first IVY league championship since 1965. He then moved on to restart the lacrosse program at St. John's University. After St. John's he took over as head coach at Stony Brook where he was named America East Coach of the year in his final two seasons. Before, taking over as head coach at the Naval Academy. He's now on his 7th season as head coach at the Naval Academy. He's helped guide the Midshipmen back to the national spotlight with their eight patriot league title in 2018. Coach and I got a chance to talk about a lot of different things like connecting with players, learning different coaching styles, one of his models for tough decisions, injecting fun into practices, and much more.
Today on the show we have Andrew McMinn. Coach McMinn graduated from Providence University. During his time at Providence, he was a stand out goalie. He ranked in the top 10 in Division I for goals against and goals per game. After graduating from Providence he went on to coach at Robert Morris University where's on his 13th season. This is his 7th as Head Coach. Last season, Robert Morris made it's fifth Northeast Conference appearance, it's fourth under Coach McMinn. He was also named Northeast Conference Coach of the Year in 2012, and 2017. Today on the show we have Will Yeatman. Will attended Notre Dame and Maryland. He played lacrosse and football at both schools. At Notre Dame, Will was the was First Team All-Great Western Lacrosse League and Rookie of the Year. He was a preseason second-team All-American as a sophomore but ended up not playing lacrosse that year. His Junior year, he transferred to Maryland and was a significant contributor to the team for 2 years while also playing football. In 2010 he was selected to tryout for the US National Team. He was signed as a Rookie Free agent by the New England Patriots. He played 3 years with the Miami Dolphins, and one year with the Houston Texans. Will and I got a chance to talk about a lot of different things, like his recruiting experience with both lacrosse and football, learning how to play you role on the team, hard work and validation, his experience with the New England Patriots, learning mental toughness in the NFL and much more.
Today on the show we have the head coach of Marquette University Men's Lacrosse team, Joe Amplo. Coach Amplo just finished his 6th season at Marquette. He's the program's first ever DI head coach. In just 6 seasons his team already won a Big East championship and had a playoff birth in 2017. He was the Big East coach of the year in 2014. And, he was an assistant coach for Team USA. Coach Amplo started as a graduate assistant at Hofstra, his alma mater, in 1999 - 2001. He then did one year as an assistant at the University of Pennsylvania before coming back to Hofstra where he remained until he was named the head coach of Marquette in 2011. In this interview Coach Amplo talked about how he handled being the assistant coach of a team he just played for; how he hustled to make things work as an assistant at Upenn while still living in NY; and, the lessons he learned along the way to being named the head coach at Marquette University. Today on the show we have Sean Hartofilis. Sean's a graduate of Princeton University. He ranks third all-time at Princeton with 126 career goals, trailing only Jesse Hubbard (163) and Chris Massey (146). Of his 126 goals, he scored 27 in nine NCAA tournament games, and he ranked seventh all-time in Division I in NCAA tournament goals in a career when he graduated. He was a three-time All-Ivy League selection, with first-team honors as a sophomore and senior, and was a two-time All-American. He also played professionally in the MLL with LA Riptide. Sean and I played together at St. Anthony's high school. It was great to catch with him. We talked about a lot of different things like, what drew him to lacrosse, how he practice shooting, and learning not to follow. And we also got to talk about his movie he wrote, directed and starred in, Covadonga. I got a chance to watch this movie last year, and it was truly impressive. I really enjoyed it. Lars is coaching his second season as the head coach of UVa Men's Lacrosse. He comes to Virginia with 12 years of coaching experience. He spent 10 years at Brown, his alma mater. His final year at Brown he led the Bears to a final four appearance and 16 - 3 record. During his time at Brown his teams won an Ivy League title in 2008, 2010, 2015, and 2016. Tiffany was the New England Coach of the Year in 2008, 2009, 2015, and 2016 and was the Ivy League Coach of Year in 2015 and 2016. As of the launch of this episode, UVA is currently 6 - 1. She's been a three-time IWLCA National Coach of the Year. She's the led the Terps to four national championships, 10 Final Fours, and 19 Conference Championships. Today on the show we have Steven Brooks. Steve is a graduate of Syracuse University where he won two National Championships. One as a freshman, and another to round out his career as a senior. His senior year he was also a First-Team All American and the McLaughlin Award winner for the nations top midfielder. Steve was drafted 6th overall by the Chicago Machine. He's an MLL All-Star who now plays for the Florida Launch where he's a team co-captain. Steve and I were roommates during my time at Syracuse so it was really great catching up with him.
