The Connected Yoga Teacher Podcast 386: Weaponization of Yoga with Sheena Sood   Description: How can something like yoga, that is meant to be peaceful and focused on meditation and breath, be weaponized? How has it been co-opted by the far-right, colonizer projects, and Zionists? How does this show up in our yoga spaces and what can we do to address it? Dr. Sheena Sood shares her insights.   Dr. Sheena Sood (PhD) is a Philadelphia-based activist, educator, sociologist, and healing justice visionary of South Asian descent. She is an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Delaware Valley University in Pennsylvania and has studied yoga at Kailash Tribal School of Yoga in India. Her current research project is about Omwashing Yoga: Weaponized Spirituality in India, Israel, and the US, where she investigates the growing incorporation of yoga and mindfulness by far-right law enforcement, military, and vigilante groups. Sheena is also curates “Decolonizing Yoga” workshops through frameworks that recognize yoga's oppressive layers and liberatory potential and is the founder and creative director of Yoga Warrior Tales, an interactive adventure-based educational program that teaches children yoga and mindfulness through a social justice lens.   Sheena shares her perspective on the situation in Palestine and the reactions in the yoga world after October 7. She explains why this response of “om-washing” is not unexpected, and how we as yoga practitioners, teachers, and studios can counter harmful narratives to support Palestine. Sheena also has some words of encouragement and motivation for those of us doing the work and feeling exhausted, so be sure to tune in for some powerful insights.   Key Takeaways: [3:14] Shannon gives a shout out of thanks to sponsors, OfferingTree and her own 20-hour Yoga for Pelvic Health Training. [4:26] Shannon introduces her guest for this episode - Sheena Sood. [11:29] What does Sheena do and who does she do it for? [14:13] How can something like yoga, that is meant to be relaxing and focuses on breath and meditation, be weaponized? What is om-washing? [22:50] Sheena shares her experience of learning about the history of Palestine and how that influenced her interactions with IDF/IOF soldiers in her yoga teacher training. [29:14] Sheena shares her reflections on the video that was circulating of people practicing yoga in support of Israel. [34:42] How is om-washing showing up at a micro level? How does the weaponization of yoga show up in our yoga spaces and studios? [45:22] Shannon pops in with a message about the sponsor, OfferingTree. [49:11] Shannon and Sheena discuss how change can actually be created - it's not by trying to be nice. But in fact, it's disguising their violent agendas."   "If I'm doing yoga according to the ethics that I want to live up to, then yoga invites me to reckon with the violence my ancestors and my relatives might be participating in."   "One of the ways in which these yoga studios participate in om-washing is in these unfortunate ways in which they think they're trying to be well-intentioned and decolonial, but they actually are only just doing this diversity and inclusion approach that is not actually anti-colonial and that is not anti-imperial."   "No oppressed and formally colonized society has ever won a struggle against their oppressor simply through nonviolent, peaceful resistance."   "I just want to encourage folks to not numb yourself as we continue to see these images and think they can't get any worse. Continue to find ways to let your heart feel what it is that you're witnessing."

Bees are critical for our environment and food production - a dwindling population could affect our ability to grow fruits and vegetables. Vincent Aloyo is the master beekeeper and an adjunct professor at Delaware Valley University, where he teaches beekeeping. He joins us to talk about why we need bees, why their numbers did decrease, and what we can do to keep the bee population on track. What is it like for young farmers today?

Many young people are less motivated to take over family farms, let alone go out and purchase their own farm. According to the 2017 US Census of Agriculture (USDA 2019), the average age of farmers in Pennsylvania was 57 years old and that number has only gone up. With only 14% of farmers being 35 and younger that year. However, Pennsylvania is leading the US in the population of younger farmers, the numbers are still dwindling. Casi Long and her family took over Kolbs Family Farm in 2021 as a young family that was inspired to work in agriculture and has been running it successfully ever since. I got the chance to speak with Casi this past Friday about Kolbs and how she got her start in agriculture as a younger farmer herself. Casi got started in farming through an agriculture 4H program when she lived in Maryland. She also worked on a farm as she grew up. She says it is helpful that she came from a consumer side of things because that helped her bring in a fresh perspective to farming. Coming from a family that wasn't originally a farming family, she had to create her own support system to keep her going. Casi also got a college degree in large animal science from Delaware Valley University. She says if you are new to farming to “just keep going” and “keep working hard.” Casi Long is the owner of Kolbs farm and Kolbs farm store in Spring City PA and spoke to us on The Spark Monday about owning Kolbs and getting her start in farming. If you want to learn more about Kolbs or are interested in trying their famous chocolate milk, check out their Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/Kolbs.Farmstore/Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Hour 2 of The Dawn Stensland Show: Was it necessary to use drug-sniffing dogs on the Delaware State University women’s lacrosse team bus after a minor traffic violation? Or did the sheriff’s department take things too far? Autopsies are being conducted on three Americans who became ill and died mysteriously while on vacation in the Bahamas. Toxicologists in the Philadelphia-area will examine the bodies in hopes of providing a definitive answer for cause of death. According to a NBC10 news report, some private schools have temporarily reinstated mask mandates as COVID-19 case counts rise in the Philadelphia-area. On Wednesday night, family, friends, and community members gathered at Max Myers Playground to remember Emmanuel Sowell. Sowell, who was a student at Delaware Valley University, was killed in Kensington over the weekend. While speaking at the White House on Wednesday, President Joe Biden addressed rising gas prices, inflation, and recession concerns. For much of the speech, Biden blamed the Republican Party for economic woes the nation is currently facing. While speaking with the Senate Banking Committee, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen proclaimed that repealing Roe v. Wade would have a negative economic impact on women in America—stating it would set women back decades.

In today's podcast, I quiz my sister 'Daniel Danielson' aka Eileen Yakscoe about things I learned from Phillip Dettmer's book. I recently read the best science book I've ever read: 'Immune' by Phillip Dettmer. Its explanations are based on first principles that open the door to thinking about the immune system in a new way. His passion for the subject started at a young age. Phillip was a fuck-up as a kid. He was pulled out of school in Germany, and placed in 'loser school.' There, he found a teacher who was strict, but a great explainer of worldly phenomena. She had him hooked by her explanation of the butterfly effect (as any kid would be with a good enough teacher). After this experience, he entered adulthood with a love of science, and spent the last 10 years writing this book about the immune system.  My co-host, Eileen Yakscoe, studies Animal Science at the Delaware Valley University. Her understanding of animals sheds light on our immune system as well as other animals' bodily processes. She attributes her stories at the end of the episode from the teachings of Dr Shedlauskas. Thanks for listening.
