Global equity markets delivered strong gains last week, with the United States leading the advance following encouraging developments in trade negotiations and solid earnings results. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq moved higher after the US and China reached an agreement to ease trade tensions during talks held in Switzerland. The agreement involves a 90-day suspension of most newly imposed tariffs. As part of the deal, US tariffs on Chinese goods will drop from 145% to 30%, while Chinese tariffs on US imports will fall from 125% to 10%. Markets responded positively to the prospect of a more constructive trade relationship between the world's two largest economies. Additional optimism stemmed from corporate activity, including confirmation that Saudi Arabia will be permitted to purchase advanced semiconductor chips from major US technology firms. Meanwhile, Qatar Airways placed a record aircraft order worth $96 billion from Boeing. These announcements further boosted sentiment, helping major indices recover above their early April levels by the end of the week...Stocks featured:Airtel Africa, Entain and Imperial BrandsTo find out more about the investment management services offered by Walker Crips, please visit our website:https://www.walkercrips.co.uk/This podcast is intended to be Walker Crips Investment Management's own commentary on markets. A quick two-stop tour in Europe is in order today for iGaming Daily, sponsored by Optimove, as Ted Orme-Claye assumes hosting duties and is joined by iGaming Expert Editor Joe Streeter to discuss a story he broke on iGX yesterday regarding Entain's Ladbrokes brand in Belgium. The European Commission sided in favour of Entain to put to bed a near five-year court case on whether the arrangement breached Article 107(1) of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (‘TFEU'), which focuses on state aid.Elsewhere in sunny(ish) Gibraltar, an arrest warrant has been issues to former Mansion CEO Karel Manasco who stands accused of embezzling well over 2 million euros from the company. Manasco is arguing bias against him in the case, and failed to attend his arranged sentencing for contempt of court on Wednesday 9 April. Joe steps into the host's chair for the second half, and helps Ted get to the bottom of this one.To round it off, Joe gets Ted's opinion on Gary Vaynerchuk and Katy Perry, very rarely seen together in the same sentence but that's just part of the charm of iGaming Daily! Send me a messageIn this episode of the Climate Confident podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with Sandhya Sabapathy, Global Head of Environment and Net Zero at Entain, about the evolving role of sustainability in business – and what it truly takes to make climate action effective, strategic, and inclusive. We discussed how sustainability has moved from the sidelines to the boardroom, driven not only by regulation but by clear commercial logic. Sandhya pointed to examples like IKEA – reducing emissions by 24% while growing revenue by 30% – as proof that climate strategy and profitability can go hand in hand.We explored the growing influence of mandatory ESG reporting, the shift of climate accountability to audit committees, and how these trends are forcing businesses to be more transparent, not just more ambitious.Sandhya also reflected on how to avoid burnout in purpose-driven work, why inclusivity leads to more resilient climate solutions, and the critical need to include marginalised voices in the climate conversation.Listen in to hear why manufacturing might be further ahead on sustainability than you'd think, what we can learn from companies like Philip Morris (yes, really), and how even small actions can build corporate momentum for meaningful change.Whether you're leading a sustainability team, looking to influence from within, or just starting your climate journey – there's something here for you.

Helt okej utveckling hittills får man säga. A Bill which would give New Zealanders just one avenue to bet on racing and sports online is under the microscope. The amendments to the Racing Industry Act would make TAB New Zealand the sole legal domestic operator of online racing and sports betting. The TAB estimates Kiwis lose $185 million a year to offshore operators, with the changes expected to retain this money. It’s all while the TAB’s operator, Entain, faces allegations of not doing enough to combat money laundering and corruption in Australia. And there are concerns from those in the industry that the monopoly would push Kiwis onto the black market. Kia ora,Welcome to Tuesday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect Aotearoa/New Zealand.I'm David Chaston and this is the international edition from Interest.co.nz.And today we lead with news analysts are now starting to estimate the costs to the US economy of some upcoming tariff policy. But first, the S&P Global American services PMI rose in December to its strongest expansion since March 2022. But their manufacturing downturn deepened with manufacturers reporting falling output and higher prices. New factory orders fell sharply, extending the decline to a sixth consecutive month. The divergence makes the services sector jump look like a sugar-rush, one that could come with a hangover. The December factory survey in the New York region reflects the factory pullback - although that is from an unusually strong November.A New York Fed study of whether large tariff hikes protect US firms has found the opposite in a detailed survey. This is no surprise to economists, and they suggest that the next round is also likely to hurt American firms further. Further own-goals for American manufacturing are on their way. Others say it will shrink US GDP by -1%. That would be a US$300 bln hit.North of the border, Canadian housing starts came in particularly strong in November, and surprisingly so.And Canadian house prices are on an extended uptrend, boosted by more sales activity as interest rates come down there. But in a surprise political move in Canada, their Finance Minister has suddenly resigned, "throwing its economic agenda into a tailspin". Disagreement on how to frame Canada's policies when Trump comes to power in the US seems to be at the heart of the matter.Across the Pacific in Japan, their November PMIs revealed that their factory sector is now barely contracting (an improvement from October), and their services sector is now expanding faster. They had their strongest rise in private sector activity in the past three months. So perhaps it is no surprise to know that machinery orders are on the rise, after a lean period.China's new house prices in 70 cities shrank by -5.7% year-on-year in November, following the steepest decline in over nine years of 5.9% in the previous month. This marked the 17th consecutive month of decreases, suggesting that Beijing's extended attempts to mitigate the prolonged downturn in the property sector, such as reducing mortgage rates and slashing home buying costs, have yet to have the effect they are looking for. Prices for second-hand houses were even weaker.China's industrial production rose +5.4% in November from the same month a year ago, mildly exceeding market estimates and October's growth rate of +5.3%. The expansion was due to a good +6.0% rise in manufacturing. At the same time electricity production only rose +0.9% in the same basis, so that does undermine somewhat the validity of the industrial gains. And that low gain does match the 'headwinds' narrative they have been talking about. Their industrial production data seems to ignore that, and their weak PMIs. Something's not quite right.China's retail sales rose by +3.0% year-on-year in November, slowing from a +4.8% growth in the previous month and below market expectations of a +4.6% gain. This marked the weakest growth in retail activity since August. But compared with many other countries, this 'weak' expansion is better than inflation. The Indian PMI for December recorded an improving factory sector, and a services sector that is still expanding fast.India exports in November however fell to their lowest level since October 2022, down -5.2% from the same month a year ago. India is not much of a trading nation relative to the size of their economy, so the rise in economic activity is all about internal demand. However, imports surged +28% on that same year-on-year basis, and to an all-time record high.It might seem a tad ironic for a major oil producer, but Iran is proposing sweeping closures of public facilities, a move officials attribute to icy winter temperatures and the need for energy management while the country suffers massive shortages due to infrastructure failures. “Iran is on the brink of a 40% blackout in just 18 days,” said one local analyst. In Europe, Moody's unexpectedly downgraded France's credit rating from Aa2 to Aa3, citing concerns over deteriorating public finances amid political instability. For reference, Moody's rates New Zealand and Australia, each separately Aaa (although perhaps they will review ours after Thursday's GDP result). In Australia, financial system regulator ASIC is suing HSBC Australia alleging failures to adequately protect customers from scams. And AML regulator AUSTRAC is taking Entain to court over "serious" money laundering compliance breaches in its gambling/betting operations. Entain operates the TAB in New Zealand. The UST 10yr yield is now at just on 4.40%, little-changed from this time yesterday. The price of gold will start today at US$2651/oz and up +US$4 from yesterday.Oil prices are down -50 USc to be just on US$70.50/bbl in the US while the international Brent price is down almost -US$1 to be just over US$73.50.The Kiwi dollar starts today still just on 57.8 USc and up +20 bps from yesterday. Against the Aussie we are up +10 bps at 90.7 AUc. Against the euro we are also up +10 bps to 55 euro cents. That all means our TWI-5 starts today at just on 67.8 to be up +20 bps from yesterday at this time. The bitcoin price starts today at US$106,866 and up +3.7% from this time yesterday. Volatility over the past 24 hours has been moderate at +/- 2.2%.You can find links to the articles mentioned today in our show notes. You can get more news affecting the economy in New Zealand from interest.co.nz.Kia ora. It's been the kind of week where everything has been happening. And somehow the Steves are going to try and fit it into one show. In quickfire news, we've got Big Tech and fast food. There's also PayPal, which is neither and has been seeing slowing revenue growth for the last few years. Steve D has the latest news from Meta and Four Corners Property Trust. And Steve W has been looking at Microsoft and McDonald's – who are the winners and who are the losers? The Budget caused some interesting waves in the UK stock market. Entain shares soared as the chancellor held off increasing taxes on betting companies, but not everyone was so lucky. Raising £40bn in taxes was always going to be a challenge. But what does Steve D think will happen next and who does Steve W think came off worst from the announcement? Amazon is a stock that both Steves own and the latest earnings report is promising. Revenue growth of 11% masks bigger profitability gains as advertising and AWS came in strong. The stock climbed after the news, but it's worth investors keeping a close eye on the free cash flow metrics. They're impressive, but are they everything that they seem? Apple shares fell after the Q3 earnings report – but not by much. Steve W has been looking at this one and thinks it was relatively encouraging, with strong growth in the services division. Sales in China are still struggling and a $10bn tax bill is hardly insignificant. But is the return to growth for iPhone sales a sign that things will be positive in the final quarter of 2024? Google's parent company Alphabet has been trailing the rest of the Magnificent Seven – from a share price perspective at least. But the stock moved higher after this week's earnings. It's easy to see why as well. Strong growth in the cloud was accompanied by an impressive valuation metric for Waymo, but what caught Steve D's eye? All of the big oil companies reported earnings this week, but the one that stands out from a valuation perspective is BP. And profits hit their lowest levels since 2024. A 6% dividend, combined with a new focus on core competencies appeals to Steve W. But is it enough to get the stock onto his buying list? Compliance Clarified – a podcast by Thomson Reuters Regulatory Intelligence
In this last episode of series 11, Helen Parry, senior regulatory expert and Rachel Wolcott, senior editor, discuss the gambling scandal that enveloped the UK general election and cross over themes for compliance. Cheating is an offence under section 42 of the Gambling Act and betting firms are supposed to do enhanced due diligence on politically exposed persons (PEPs). Helen explains how recent enforcement actions against UK gambling firms around their failure to conduct enhanced due diligence on PEPs led to better controls that meant UK politicians using inside information to place bets on the general election date were detected quickly. Helen and Rachel discuss the UK Financial Conduct Authority's guidance for risk managing PEPs as well as other inside information examples around political polling and other sensitive information. Effective employer branding is not just about attracting candidates but also about retaining existing employees. A positive work environment and reputation increase employee satisfaction and reduced turnover. As a recruiter, how can you partner with your client companies to achieve employer branding objectives? To answer this question, I am delighted to have a very special guest, Bryan Adams, CEO and founder of Ph.Creative, an award-winning employer branding agency with offices in Liverpool, London, San Diego, and Auckland. Bryan shares insights and strategies on creating an effective storytelling framework to apply this branding philosophy: repel the many and compel the few. Bryan helps his clients define their essence as a company, both in its uniqueness and what it stands for, and then crafts and aligns those aspirations with the people his clients are looking to attract. They've worked with famous brands such as Apple and Nike. He is also a two-time best-selling author. His latest book is Give & Get:Repel the Many and Compel the Few with Impact, Purpose, and Belonging. He has written for the Harvard Business Review, Inc.com, the Entrepreneur magazine, and has been featured in Forbes. Episode Outline and Highlights [02:22] How Bryan launched his branding agency. [05:45] DIscussion on employer branding and the philosophy of attracting the right people. [13:01] Roadmap in helping your client attract the right people. [18:02] What are the components of a good employer brand? [27:41] Bryan gives us key stories from his book, Give & Get Employer Branding. [30:36] What mistakes do companies make concerning employer branding? [37:31] How can recruiters partner with their client companies in achieving the objectives of employer branding? [43:00] Book recommendations and references on storytelling. [48:10] Employer branding case studies on small to medium-sized businesses. Repel the Many and Compel the Few - A Guide on Employer Branding Recruiters are ambassadors of their clients. Understanding the employer brand of the company they represent is crucial to attracting the right candidates. Effective employer branding is critical for attracting, engaging, and retaining top talent. It goes beyond just salary and benefits; it encompasses the company's values, culture, work environment, opportunities for growth, and overall employee experience. Contrary to the notion that the correct branding should attract as many candidates as possible, Bryan believes that doing it right should only compel a few, well-screened candidates. He said: “And it's interesting still in a recent survey, 70% of employer brand leaders still cite an increase in volume of applicants and traffic to their career site as a success metric when delivering an employer brand. I've never met a TA leader, a talent attraction leader who just wants more applicants, more noise, more admin, and more work to get to the people who are ideally matched.” Bryan shared case studies of corporations and small-medium businesses they worked with and how the right employer branding worked well to find the right people. Bryan pretty much defined the right approach to branding when he said “The idea is, if you're confident and clear enough to know your culture and what it takes to drive the organization forward, and you also can answer some fundamental questions of not just why people join, but why they stay, then you can craft a give and get proposition which is a two-way value exchange of not just what you stand to get as an employer but actually what you're willing to give in return candidates and employees alike can make very informed career decisions as to whether it's an ideal match.” How to Strategize a Good Employer Brand Bryan shared the mistakes companies make when envisioning and strategizing their employer brand. He also shared vital pointers and elements to consider in designing and marketing effective talent branding. It leads to creating a communication framework, which should include the following: Research - the goal is to look for something authentic enough for employees to try on and recognize their personal experience in the messaging that you will put out. Ask the right questions - organizations need to ask the right questions and get the right information to create a messaging that makes sense for them while compelling a segment of the talent audience that they are targeting. Messaging - Bryan described it clearly: get a 360 view and design the messaging to touch a very tangible bridge between the reality of today and the aspiration of tomorrow. Brand Essence - just like Nike's “Just Do It” campaign, a clear brand essence needs to start a conversation where people can look at the sentiment of what you are saying and be intrigued or make an interpretation that can create an affinity with the audience. Bryan also discussed the importance of storytelling. He mentioned that this is part of what makes their company successful and also shared books and references that you can look into if you plan to begin engaging in this skill. How Can Recruiters Promote Their Client's Employer Brand? How can recruiters partner with their client companies in achieving the objectives of employer branding? I was interested in picking Bryan's brains on this question and he was able to give insightful advice which is to focus on creating a compelling story structure. “The formula is this: empathy, curiosity, surprise, insight, and action,” Bryan said. This approach to creating a story structure he shared is interesting as it is backed up by psychology. This is how he explained it: “Empathy is an emotional immediate connection to the organization, what they're trying to do, and the purpose and vision of the organization. Curiosity is something that differentiates you from everybody else and gets people to lean in. So there's an emotional connection and now we're leaning in. Surprise is here's three things that you didn't know. You weren't expecting this. So what we're doing is we're playing with, we're opening the right side of the mind now, the right side of the brain, such that you're now ready to receive facts and information, insights and specific that you can deliver about the role. So we've talked about the company, maybe there's curiosity about the team and the specific objectives in that team, then insight around the specific role, and then we make a call to action. Usually, the call to action ties everything together from a purpose perspective. And if you walk through that formula, it's incredibly powerful if you have a proposition that's compelling and true that plays on all of the strengths that we've talked about.” Our Sponsor This podcast is proudly sponsored by i-intro i-intro® is an end-to-end retained recruitment platform.
