Phillip and Pini decode the implications of operating in a world where generative AI acts as both creative partner and analytical assistant. The walls between departments are dissolving. Roles are becoming more flexible. Tools are learning faster than their users. And the new creative process starts with a prompt. Key TakeawaysAI is now the default creative and analytical partner—prompting, planning, and predicting across workflows. The boundary between job functions is vanishing. Designers analyze data, data scientists shape stories. You no longer need to be a specialist to do specialized tasks.Context collapse is real. But AI is rapidly learning how to avoid it.Generalists who can flex across roles (with help from AI) are the new MVPs.Curiosity beats credentials. The only requirement is a mindset that's open, iterative, and unbothered by a little ambiguity.Key Quotes“It gives you back hours and hours and hours of time... and it's $100 a month. That's ridiculous.” – Pini Yakuel“I used to look for excuses to use AI. Now it's part of my all-day, every-day routine.” – Phillip“You can't be creative if you can't lie. And now the computer can lie.” – Pini Yakuel“Instead of having positions, we'll have roles. You might be 80% designer—but you'll need to do data too.” – Pini Yakuel“Hire for attitude, not skill. New skills can always be acquired if you have the right mindset.” – Pini YakuelAssociated Links:Learn more about Optimove's platformsLearn more about Positionless MarketingCheck out Future Commerce on YouTubeCheck out Future Commerce+ for exclusive content and save on merch and printSubscribe to Insiders and The Senses to read more about what we are witnessing in the commerce worldListen to our other episodes of Future Commerce
In this kickoff episode of Decoded, Phillip Jackson sits down with Pini Yakuel to explore the concept of "positionless marketing" — a radical rethinking of how marketing teams operate in an AI-powered world. Drawing inspiration from the evolution of positionless basketball, Pini argues that marketing, like sports, is evolving toward roles defined by agility and capability, not titles or silos. The conversation weaves through leadership, startup culture, and how Optimove is enabling marketers to work faster, smarter, and more autonomously.Key TakeawaysPositionless marketing is a mindset — It's about autonomy, adaptability, and eliminating bottlenecks, not just rearranging the org chart.Modern teams thrive when roles are fluid — Inspired by positionless basketball, today's marketers succeed through cross-functionality and creative flexibility, not rigid specialization.Gen AI is the new creative exoskeleton — Like an Iron Man suit, AI tools enhance marketers' abilities, enabling faster, smarter, and more creative execution.Speed is the native language of startups — Startups operate positionlessly by necessity, while legacy orgs must dismantle silos and empower self-service to keep up.Positionless isn't chaos—it's craftsmanship — The best managers focus less on blocking and tackling, and more on elevating outcomes by distributing capability and unlocking human potential at scale.Key Quotes[00:12:25] “Let's look at the Renaissance man... the celebration of the wide gamut of human talent — that's what this could be.” – Pini[00:24:53] “It's not that departments will disappear. It's that the type of work they do will start to change.” – Pini[00:26:23] “Almost every person in our exec team started their job at Optimove by writing SQL.” – Pini[00:30:12] “A team should be small enough to be fed by two pizzas — and fully autonomous.” – Pini (on the Bezos principle)[00:34:07] “You're already positionless — that's why you get to focus on what actually matters: the work.” – Pini, on Phillip's agile team setupAssociated Links:Learn more about Optimove's platformsLearn more about Positionless MarketingCheck out Future Commerce on YouTubeCheck out Future Commerce+ for exclusive content and save on merch and printSubscribe to Insiders and The Senses to read more about what we are witnessing in the commerce worldListen to our other episodes of Future CommerceHave any questions or comments about the show? Live from Optimove Connect, Brian sits down with Optimove CEO Pini Yakuel and Nikolas Badminton, Chief Futurist at Futurist.com, to unpack the philosophical and practical implications of 'positionless marketing'—a radical rethink of organizational roles in the AI era.Mind Over MechanismKey takeaways:Positionless is Power: The most innovative organizations won't be flatter—they'll be fluid. Roles dissolve; talent flows where it's needed.AI Is the New Intern: It drafts, it preps, it gets you started—but the genius still has to come from you.Old Process ≠ New Potential: Layering AI on legacy workflows just speeds up your inefficiency.Control is a Creativity Killer: Let go of silos, turf wars, and micromanagement. The next gen of leaders will trust, not gatekeep. The Kids Are Alright—and in Charge: Within 10 years, new mindsets will lead. Curious, collaborative, and chaos-embracing.[00:04:48]: “Startups get stuff done because you're positionless. One day you're marketing, next day you're writing code. That's how you beat the big guys—speed and fluidity.” – Pini Yakuel[00:08:03]: “We create the tools, and the tools create us.” – Nick Badminton[00:14:44]: “New tech + old process = expensive old process.” – Nick Badminton[00:11:50]: “Friction is what makes life life.” – Brian LangeAssociated Links:Check out Future Commerce on YouTubeCheck out Future Commerce+ for exclusive content and save on merch and printSubscribe to Insiders and The Senses to read more about what we are witnessing in the commerce worldListen to our other episodes of Future CommerceHave any questions or comments about the show? Special thanks as always to our two top of the league sponsors, Optimove and Clarion Gaming. Both utter legends and, funnily enough – total coincidence, too – Optimove's CEO and founder is on this episode! First up there is a short intro, in which both Jon and Fintan completely lose it because of some inappropriate comments [0:00 – 6:05]. And they're comments for which Fintan certainly apologises. Then we meet Pini Yakuel, of Optimove CEO fame. Our conversation covers a wide range of topics, including the OptiMove Connect event, the concept of the positionless marketer, the impact of AI and no-code solutions, and the evolution of skills in sports and marketing. The discussion also delves into the benefits of a positionless approach and the challenges faced by traditional marketing departments, the democratization of decision-making, the art of boxing, and hunger for success. We also discuss the challenges of maintaining hunger and motivation after achieving success. I say ‘we', but Jon can clearly not contribute to that discussion [6:06 – 1:06:26]. In a nutshell: The concept of the positionless marketer is a key focus, emphasizing the impact of AI and no-code solutions on marketing roles and processes. The conversation explores the evolution of skills in sports and marketing, highlighting the benefits of a positionless approach and the challenges faced by traditional marketing departments. The conversation provides insights into the changing landscape of marketing, the role of technology, and the potential for greater efficiency and innovation in marketing processes. The impact of self-service capabilities on democratization and decision-making The challenges of maintaining hunger and motivation after achieving success The impact of democratization on growth and scale in organizations Choice quotes: "The game of basketball has become positionless, emphasizing versatility of play and velocity, which wasn't the case in the past." "The future of marketing is positionless, steering towards greater efficiency and innovation, leveraging AI and no-code solutions." "Good communication solves most problems." "I'm still waiting for mine." This podcast is presented by Optimove, which is used by 56% of the EGR Power50 to personalize player experiences. Jon Chuckery talked about how this concept might be the wave of the future for Atlanta. Secondly, with so many new personnel coming in for the Atlanta Falcons on defense, there will have to be a quick learning curve for that side of the football. A.J. Terrell took a slight dip in production last year, but he will have to find a way to get back to his old self. Jon Chuckery talked about Terrell getting back to elite status. Lastly, the Atlanta Hawks were very aggressive about finding Nate McMillan's replacement once they let him go. There is an understanding to why, now that other teams have let their coach go. in ‘How Basketball Can Save the World,' NYU Professor and Author David Hollander takes us out of the classroom to present a beautiful new philosophy with contributions by many of his past guests and based on values inherent to basketball, such as inclusion and the balancing of individual success with the needs of the collective. These principles move us beyond conflict and confusion toward a more harmonious and meaningful future: Positionless-ness: In basketball, players aren't siloed into just one position or responsibility. In life, we can learn to be more adaptive to the challenges we face by embracing a positionless mindset. Human Alchemy: We talk a lot about team chemistry, but team alchemy means the creation of something totally new—a team far greater than the sum of its parts. Sanctuary: Basketball offers players a critical space to feel safe, free, and expressive. Fostering similar spaces in the real world can encourage people to be their best, happiest, and most productive selves. Transcendence: Basketball is about defying gravity, becoming weightless, and flying higher than anyone ever has before. By seeking out this principle, we can elevate ourselves and those around us to a new plane of experience. In this interview, Hollander talks about the need to encourage young writers, the dangers of AI for future generations of writers, his love for basketball, and of course, how basketball can change the world. What if we were to make our All-NBA selections using the new CBA rules that will go into effect next season? Well, that's exactly what Wes Goldberg and Darian Vaziri attempt to do on today's Locked On NBA. Using the 65 game minimum and positionless teams, several players are eliminated (Steph Curry, LeBron James, Kevin Durant, etc) while several others now have a path to making one of the three teams. Cody Alexander AFCA We caught up with Cody Alexander at AFCA and sat down with hit at the Catapult booth to recap what we saw in 2022 as well as what he expects to trend in 2023. Cody Alexander is the creator of MatchQuarters & the author of five books on defense. A former Texas HS Football Coach & FBS Defensive GA, Coach A. has a vast amount of experience at all levels of football. Before returning to the high school ranks, Coach A. was the Defensive Graduate Assistant at Baylor University under current North Texas Defensive Coordinator, Phil Bennett. During Coach's tenure at Baylor, he assisted with the development of the corners. In addition, he was placed in charge of opponent breakdowns while overseeing and assisting with defensive recruiting, discovering All-Big 12 LB Eddie Lackey. While at Baylor, Coach A. was on staff for three bowl appearances (Fiesta, Holiday, & Alamo) and a Big XII Championship (2013). High School Trends: -Move to the 3-3-5 -Wing-T and Power type concepts -Pin & Pull -Getting bigger O personnel on the field -The Odd Stack -Using “Spread” defense to defend bigger personnel -Bigger Sam linebackers -Slice/Inverted Sky to boundary -Less emphasis on Pressures more on Coverage -Benefits 7 on 7 College Trends: -Uptick on 5-man pressures -More internal pressures to collapse pocket -Zone-it and Match-it sides -Internal pressures vs. protection help -Early down pressures structures that are good vs. run -BOSS front/overloads NFL Trends: -Coverage rotations -5-man pressures - hugging the back -Will we see more pistol? -Nickel with the passing strengths -Advantages of back in sidecar Tools and technology for coaches: -Emphasis on analytics -Win rate data -Creating objective look at what you are doing real-time -Understanding efficiencies -Analytics for practice planning Related: Cody Alexander - Trends at all Levels in 2022 https://soundcloud.com/user-804678956/defensive-trends-at-all-levels-in-2022-cody-alexander-match-quarters Match Quarters and Hybrid Defenders: User-804678956 – Match-quarters-hybrid-defenders-cody-alexander Simulated Blitzes: User-804678956 – Systematic-blitzes-cody-alexander Self Scouting - Cody Alexander: User-804678956 – Self-scouting-cody-alexander Positionless Defense User-804678956 – Positionless-defense-with-south-dakota-defensive-coordinator-travis-johansen Match-Quarters in 2023 https://matchquarters.com/ Match Quarters SubStack https://matchquarters.substack.com/ Twitter: @the_Coach_A

TCU Preview: Offense starts at 1:00 Don't buy the "They ain't played nobody" line; TCU's schedule was the same, also Michigan beat Ohio State, a Playoff team, 45-23 on the road. Spread offense with Duggan pulling out magic. Has a deep ball down, has some good deep threats in huge receivers Quentin Johnson, the star, TE Jared Wiley who's 6-7, and Savion Williams who's 6-5. Plus a standard slot and a good running back. The OL doesn't get much push; they're all the same 6-5/300 too-stiff-for-tackle guard, give up pass rush, but don't let Duggan loose. Man up Johnson on Johnston or play lots of zone? Seth thinks man; Brian thinks zone. 2. TCU Preview: Defense starts at 35:20 It's the 404 Tite, with ISU's three-safety three-high look that temps you into passing. Positionless defense is tough on reads but breakable if you plow through it; Michigan might want to go many-TEs and push the gap out to the edge versus smaller force defenders. DL want to take on doubles, Michigan moves those kinds of DTs. LBs are not the most athletic sorts; would be great if Edwards's hand is healthy enough to make him a passing game threat again. 3. TCU Preview: Special Teams and Heuristics starts at 1:02:33 Their slot is also a dangerous returner; just kick it out of the endzone. Meh Aussie punter, very good kicker who rarely misses and has a career long of 54. Michigan hopes Brad Robbins was hurt when their punt efficiency went off a cliff later in the season. Their season was Vikings-esque, pulling out all of the games that could have swung either way, benefiting from things like Texas not hitting any open deep shots. Discussion on the meta of Playoff competition, TCU being at the lower end of teams to make it. 2015 MSU was the outlier; every other Playoff team is at least good. Ryan Day scenarios. 4. Hot Takes and Hoops vs North Carolina starts at 1:22:46 Hard to beat UNC when your best player is a no-show. The quadruple technical was some weenie-ass officiating, Seth's still mad at Hunter for doing that when fouls on either center are the game. Good to see Bufkin turning into a real star, good to see Jett can shoot over any wing. What to do now? Kinda have to roll with what they got and hope TW and HD can pick up their games. You listen to enough basketball shows and talk about how the game today is so positionless. Players like Jokic, Draymond Green, Ben Simmons handling the ball more and being the initial playmakers. Embiid and Giannis being bigs that are scoring from all over the floor. Kevin Durant being 7 foot tall and Paul George being 6'10 but moving and scoring like a small guard. The game is so fluid and nobody plays a specific position anymore right??
