Most marketing fails before a single ad is made. Not because the execution is bad, but because teams leap straight to tactics and skip the strategy underneath. Ben Norman calls the result "busy fools": lots of activity, very little impact.Ben, Strategy Director at Principles Agency and host of Marketing Room 101, joins Chris and Will to break down what brand strategy actually is, why so many senior marketers get it wrong, and how to do it properly without drowning in 20-page decks and brand "salad bowls".What you'll learn:The simplest definition of strategy you'll hear, using Ben's "person and product" modelWhy diagnosis comes before strategy, and strategy before tactics (borrowed from the ancient Greeks)The Three Cs framework: customer, company, competition, and why every problem comes back to themThe "bow tie" method for distilling a mountain of insight down to a single wordWhy you should think in alternatives, not competitors (a Snickers competes with doing nothing, not just a KitKat)The McCafé anti-poncery campaign and what makes it a masterclass in positioningWhy "channel neutrality" matters, and why SEO, GEO and AEO are all just "search"How strategic thinking applies to everything from cleaning your house to running the countryPlus Ben serves up his now-famous Menu of Mistakes, including the £70k pitch that got away, the food shoot where he forgot to book the art director and styled it out by pretending he was one, and the Wally the Whale mascot meltdown at Wetherby Racecourse that ruined childhoods and lost punters their bets. The conversation closes with the three things Ben would banish from marketing right now: tiny microphones, people misusing the word "omnichannel", and the damage social media is doing to society.Chapters:0:00 Intro 1:15 Building a podcast with Room 101 4:35 Mini MBA and marketing basics 7:40 What strategy really means 12:35 The Three Cs and the bow tie 17:55 Listening first and field research 21:00 Knowing when insight is enough 24:55 McCafé and anti-poncery positioning 29:10 Strategy thinking in daily life 34:45 False binaries and channel neutrality 39:35 What communications means in practice 42:25 The menu of marketing mistakes 46:30 Wally the Whale mascot meltdown 51:05 The missing art director food shoot 54:40 Three things to banish now 57:35 Social media harm and regulationConnect with Ben Norman on LinkedInSend us Fan Mail Is your strategy still right in 2026? “When your business model is really optimized, the money's good. You have the kind of lifestyle you want. You have the kind of income you want. You're working towards your legacy and it meets your why.”–Carolyn HerfurthIs a fuzzy business model slowing you down? Carolyn Herfurth is a strategist and business model geek, and we're diving into something a lot of us don't have clear when we start our business or experience growth. In the simplest language, the business model is all the offers, products and services that you make in order to make money. But you can have low, medium, or high touch offers. It's not one size fits all—but finding the right fit for you at every stage of your business makes such a difference. We talk about: Variety in filling your funnelHaving the confidence to charge the right rates and changing rates to allow for the support you need to fill a programGetting clear on what we are offering and why and what the price isDecluttering your business modelWhy a thought partner is so importantQuarterly check ins on the five pillars of your business. ABOUT CAROLYNCarolyn Herfurth is the strategist expertise-driven founders hire when they've built something that works and are ready for what's next. Change comes from action. Doable changes are things that you can add into your life, one at a time to make micro shifts and really create a ripple effect that will create a big change over time. Choose one that really piques your interest and roll with it. Here are three Doable Changes from this conversation:TRY THE SIMPLIFIER. Try Carolyn's Simplifier to help you develop your business plan. Ask yourself: What's the thing you're selling? What's the problem it's solving? What's the promise you're making? And what is the purpose of that thing? Why does it exist? And then what's the price?DECLUTTER YOUR BUSINESS MODEL. What are you still offering that no longer works for you? It might be something you no longer doing or an opt-in that leads nowhere. Even if people love it, if it doesn't work for you and the rest of your business, you can move it out.DO A QUARTERLY CHECK IN. Check in on each of the five pillars: What is your relationship with your business now? Is your business model clear? How are you regarded as a thought leader? How easy and effective is your marketing? How are sales (is it easy to close)? Rate each of these on a scale of 1–10. Then explain in a sentence why you rated yourself that way. What does it show you about what needs to change.

He explains how early skepticism was overcome through product demos, customer reviews, word-of-mouth, and a bold Rubicon Trail “torture test” that proved the product could perform under extreme conditions. The conversation also dives into Proof Razor, Andy's premium Made-in-USA razor brand built around long-term quality, honest pricing, universal blades, and freedom from subscription lock-in. Unlike Gluetread, which created a new product category, Proof Razor competes in a crowded market—making its positioning, materials, customer experience, and manufacturing story even more important.Andy also shares practical advice for founders, including why entrepreneurs should fail fast, test minimum viable products, get feedback from people outside their personal circle, and avoid getting stuck chasing perfection before launch. In today's episode of the Harvest Growth Podcast, we cover:Why moving quickly can be a major advantage for American-made product brandsHow domestic manufacturing can improve speed, quality control, cash flow, and relationshipsThe story behind Gluetread and how it solved a real off-road tire repair problemHow customer reviews, real-world demos, and torture tests build credibilityWhy premium products need strong proof, trust, and clear positioningHow Proof Razor challenges the traditional razor-and-blades business modelWhy founders should test minimum viable products before scaling too quicklyThe importance of failing fast, setting goals, and learning from real customersIf you're building a product business, launching a new idea, or trying to stand out in a crowded market, this episode offers practical lessons on product validation, manufacturing, brand trust, and long-term growth.Want to connect with Andy or learn more about his products?Visit Gluetread.com or ProofRazor.com.Do you have a brand you'd like to launch or scale?Visit HarvestGrowth.com to book a free consultation and learn how our team has helped generate over $2 billion in product sales.

In B2B organisations, "one brand voice" often sounds straightforward. In practice, it is far more complex - especially in firms where reputation is carried by people, expertise and relationships. This week, Benedict speaks to Paola Garbini, Head of Marketing Europe at Oliver Wyman, about the realities of building brand coherence inside a global consulting business. As Oliver Wyman strengthens its alignment within the wider Marsh ecosystem, Paola explains how the firm is navigating the balance between consistency and independence.Rather than enforcing rigid brand rules, the discussion explores a more pragmatic idea - convergence instead of consensus. The episode looks at how organisations can create shared direction without suppressing the individuality that makes professional services valuable to clients.Along the way, Paola reflects on the role of personal brands in consulting firms, why marketing needs to move upstream in business conversations, and how teams can measure the commercial impact of brand work more effectively. This is a grounded conversation about brand as an organisational capability - not just a communications exercise. Why "one brand voice" is harder in professional servicesThe logic behind Oliver Wyman's expanded brand modelWhy independence still matters inside a larger brand ecosystemConvergence vs consensus in brand transformationBalancing consistency with individuality in consulting firmsThe role of personal brands in professional servicesMeasuring marketing impact and return on marketing investmentWhy marketing needs to be involved earlier in business strategyB2B Marketing: The Provocative Truth is a podcast by alan. agency. Pete sits down with Graeme Acheson, founder of Sports4Cast, the data driven modelling platform recently reviewed in SBC Magazine 161.Graeme explains how a background in accountancy and risk analytics evolved into building forecasting models across rugby, football and baseball. What began as a passion project tracking rugby rankings developed into a fully automated betting model designed to identify bookmaker mispricing through probability accuracy. The discussion centres on rugby, where the model has produced a double digit ROI over the past 12 months, and why thinner, less efficient markets can offer opportunity for disciplined bettors. Graeme breaks down the distinction between prediction and probability, how his dynamic system adapts to market movement, and why timing can matter as much as selection. The conversation then moves beyond betting, exploring how the same ranking methodology has been used by football clubs such as Sunderland to help shortlist managers and guide season level decision making. Finally, Graeme outlines plans to expand into further sports, the challenges of modelling sharper markets like football, and why simple principles, applied consistently with good data, can still uncover edges in 2026.Topics covered includeFrom chartered accountant to sports modelling founderHow rugby rankings evolved into a betting modelWhy rugby markets are less efficient than footballWhy early week pricing can offer stronger edgesLiquidity trade offs and closing line efficiencyUsing A, B and C bet gradings to manage riskFully automated modelling and hourly odds updatesWorking with betting syndicates vs retail bettorsApplying ranking systems to football manager recruitmentData driven shortlisting at SunderlandSeason targeting models and decision support for clubsExpanding into football, baseball and future sportsWhy probability accuracy matters more than picking winnersSupport The PodcastYou can support the SBC Podcast by visiting our sponsor, Matchbook. I just enjoyed making the predictions and seeing how accurate they were.”“The first question everybody would always ask was, do you use these for betting?”On rugby as a betting market“There's always something going on in rugby, and it's not priced as efficiently as football.”“The mispricings in some of the smaller rugby leagues are almost farcical.”“Three or four days out you'll see plenty of good opportunities. The trade off is limits.”On Using The Sports4Cast Service"The system is constantly updating. Every hour the recommendations can change.”“Different users will see different opportunities depending on when they log in.”On Syndicates and Scale“I speak to a couple of syndicates who take the responsibility of getting the bets down. That allows you to get some skin in the game without the admin of keeping accounts open.”“If you have the execution in place, there is definitely scale there in rugby.”On working with football clubs“If a manager consistently joins clubs and leaves them at a much higher ranking, they must be doing something right.”“You never blindly follow the data. You match the quantitative with the qualitative.”“It just gives clubs a grounding. You're not sticking your finger in the air.”

Building a Business That Honors Your Energy: Emily Fraser's Journey from Burnout to BalanceQuick SummaryEmily Fraser returns to share how she built a thriving online business that generates consistent revenue while working only 1-2 hours per week. After a traumatic brain injury ended her teaching career, Emily discovered how to create a business model that honors her energy limitations—and teaches others to do the same. This candid conversation explores the reality behind "passive income," the power of setting boundaries from day one, and why sometimes the most profitable thing you can do is rest.In This EpisodeHow Emily's car accident and brain injury led to the creation of The Spoonie MentorThe concept of "bright lines" (boundaries) and how they shaped her entire business modelBuilding an evergreen group program that runs with minimal weekly involvementWhy Emily eliminated a profitable business coaching program (and what that taught her)The truth about expansion and contraction cycles in businessHow her business continued generating revenue during IVF, pregnancy loss, and family griefRedefining consistency: what it means when you're not posting on social media for monthsThe danger of jumping from guru to guru and constantly changing your business modelWhy "desperation repels dollars" and how to build from abundance insteadKey TakeawaysDesign for your constraints first: Emily set "bright lines" before launching—no evening work, limited Zoom calls, maximum 2-4 hours daily. This wasn't negotiable, and every system was built around these boundaries.Revenue-generating activities only: Every 25-minute work session focused exclusively on activities that would generate income. Everything else got outsourced or eliminated.Maintenance is a valid season: Between expansion and contraction lies maintenance—a season where systems run, revenue flows, and you don't have to be "on." This isn't failure; it's the reward for building well.Your worth isn't your work: Emily had to actively reprogram the belief that productivity equals worthiness. Her business generates income even when she's grieving, healing, or simply living life.Test live before automating: Run your offer live multiple times, gather feedback, and ensure it works before creating evergreen systems. Automation amplifies what's already proven.Memorable Quotes"The less I do, the more I earn. I've really focused on these affirmations and implementing these beliefs of what I desire.""Every time I've had huge wins in the business, it's been followed by periods of dips because I subconsciously struggle to allow myself to receive.""Desperation repels dollars. “Within an in demand topic, how are you going to differentiate? There are only X number of categories of movies out there, right? And so it's not like you're suddenly going to invent a new category of movie, but you do want, within that well trenched category, to be distinct.”Welcome back to The Speaker Lab podcast! In today's episode, host Grant Baldwin is joined once again by youth speaker and entrepreneur, Josh Shipp, for a masterclass on how to build a seven-figure speaking business. If you've ever wondered what it really takes to reach and sustain that elusive seven-figure mark in the speaking industry, this conversation is for you!Drawing inspiration from his own career and his work as the founder of a successful speakers bureau for the youth and education space, Josh pulls back the curtain on the practical, often overlooked strategies that lead to lasting success. He and Grant dive deep into the six core offerings every speaker should consider—starting with the foundational work of perfecting your speech, and then thoughtfully layering on merchandise, building an engaged online platform, writing a book, developing a course, and scaling through licensing. You'll hear candid reflections on why speaking alone can be both lucrative and limiting, the importance of focusing on quality before quantity, and how to know when it's time to pursue additional streams of revenue. Josh offers clear benchmarks, practical income thresholds, and valuable insights into everything from setting realistic goals, leveraging audience feedback, and understanding the true costs and opportunities of each new offering.Whether you're trying to book more gigs, looking to expand with digital products, or simply want to avoid burnout while building a business you love, this episode outlines the unfiltered roadmap to becoming a seven-figure speaker! You'll learn:Focusing on substance over charismaThe misconception that income must come from speaking aloneAvoiding “shiny object syndrome”Building offers sequentially versus all at onceExamples of different revenue pie chartsVariables that influence your income modelWhy merch should come second in your sequenceUtilizing other platforms like newsletters, podcasts, etc.The role of authoring a book as a speakerWhen to maximize a current offering or make a new oneAnd much, much more!“What I would advocate for, looking back on it with a bit of pattern recognition, is building these [avenues] deliberately step by step. That's what's going to help you get to a [seven-figure speaking business].”Episode ResourcesJosh's WebsiteGet Free Speaker ResourcesBook a Call with The Speaker LabCalculate Your Speaking FeeJoin The Speaker Lab Community on FacebookSubscribe on Apple PodcastsSubscribe on SpotifySee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Dr. Brenner blends his lifelong passion for music with leadership consulting, offering a unique approach that uses musical principles to help leaders and teams perform in harmony. This conversation uncovers the power of rhythm, communication, and collaboration in leadership—and how leaders can apply the CHORDS framework to foster stronger, more effective teams.Merging Music with Leadership MasteryDr. Brenner's dual identity as a professional musician and leadership consultant sets the tone for a refreshingly creative conversation. He discusses how decades of experience playing woodwinds—saxophone, flute, and tin whistle—has shaped his understanding of teamwork and adaptability. Just as a band relies on listening and responding to each other in real time, leaders must foster an environment where communication and respect are non-negotiables.At the heart of Right Chord Leadership is the proprietary CHORDS model: Communication, Harmony, Ownership, Respect, Direction, and Support. According to Dr. Brenner, neglecting even one of these "notes" can throw an entire team off-key. He emphasizes that high-performing organizations aren't built on rigid hierarchies, but rather on the fluid, collaborative interplay of roles—much like an ensemble working in sync.Josh and Dr. Brenner explore the pitfalls of overcomplication in leadership. While many organizations invest in tools and strategies, they often overlook the human factors that drive engagement. Through this lens, Dr. Brenner advises leaders to prioritize clear communication, empower team members with ownership, and create a bold but realistic vision. By doing so, leaders can transform a disjointed group into a synchronized, high-impact team.About Dr. Michael BrennerDr. Michael Brenner is the Founder and CEO of Right Chord Leadership, where he helps leaders and teams "find their groove, get in sync, and work in harmony." Now, we've begun the process of rebundling. So, what does this mean for the future of healthcare tech? And how do venture investors leverage this idea to decide which digital health startups deserve funding? Dr. Vineeta Agarwala is General Partner at Andreessen Horowitz, where she leads investments for the a16z bio and health fund across digital health care delivery, biotech and life sciences tools and diagnostics. Dr. Agarwala has a special interest in companies leveraging unique datasets to improve healthcare delivery, and she serves on several healthcare portfolio company boards, including Memorial Health, Thyme Care and Waymark. On this episode of HLTH Matters, Dr.  Agarwala joins host Dr. Guatam Gulati to discuss what health payviders are doing to aggregate the best technology for specialty care and how we might integrate such specialized health tech into already complicated workflows. Dr. Agarwala shares her take on the successes and failures of digital health in the last decade, describing how healthcare tech has been transformative for certain patient populations and why she sees most remote connected wearables as a missed opportunity. Listen in to understand how the high bar for fundraising is changing the way a16z makes decisions and get Dr. Agarwala's advice for aspiring founders in healthcare tech. Topics CoveredHow Dr. Agarwala thinks about the unbundling and rebundling of services in healthcareWhat health payviders are doing to aggregate the best possible technology across large numbers of specialty care areasHow we might integrate specialized health tech into already complicated workflows (and why it's such a challenge)Dr. Agarwala's take on patients, providers and payers as joint custodians of healthcare dataThe pros and cons of imposing a government tax on corporations to access healthcare dataHow digital health has been transformative for some small patient populations, health systems and provider practicesWhy Dr. Agarwala sees remote connected wearables as a failure in the absence of intelligent care managementHow the high bar for fundraising has changed the way a16z makes healthcare tech investment decisionsWhy a16z is encouraging its portfolio companies to adopt a lean business modelWhy now is a phenomenal time to start a company in the healthcare technology spaceHow Dr. Agarwala's experience with her grandfather's death informs her work at a16z Connect with Dr. Vineeta AgarwalaDr. Agarwala at Andreessen HorowitzDr. Agarwala on TwitterDr. Agarwala on LinkedIn  Connect with Dr. Guatam GulatiHLTHDr. Gulati on TwitterDr. Gulati on LinkedIn  ResourcesJulie Yoo at Andreesen HorowitzThyme Care

I found about Lori's work recently and after reading her book Connections over Compliance: Rewiring our Perceptions of Discipline, I really wanted to bring her on as a guest because I believe the work she is doing is revolutionary. Lori's work centers around helping educators, parents, and any adults who work with children shift the way they think about discipline by reaching for sustainable behavioral changes through brain state awareness rather than compliance and obedience. She's actively pushing back against reactive and punitive practices that can potentially reactivate the developing stress response systems of children, and is advocating for stronger co-regulation practices and regulated brain and body states for adults. During this conversation, we consider why there is such a powerful foundational belief that discipline and punishment go together, what happens when the traditional methods of punishment are imposed on children who are coming to school with trauma or a heightened nervous system, and why it's so important for educators to take responsibility over their own nervous system regulation.  About Dr. Lori DesautelsDr. Lori Desautels, has been an Assistant Professor at Butler University since 2016 where she teaches both undergraduate and graduate programs in the College of Education.Lori's passion is engaging her students through the social and relational neurosciences as it applies to education by integrating the Applied Educational Neuroscience framework, and its learning principles and practices into her coursework at Butler. Lori is the author of 4 books. Her most recent book, Connections over Compliance: Rewiring our Perceptions of Discipline was released in late 2020. In this week's podcast episode, Emily chats with Cherie Edilson, local business enthusiast and CEO of Member Marketplace Inc. Cherie digs into her journey as a local business owner and shares how that experience gave her an honest look at the challenges small businesses have to face. This spurred her to create Member Marketplace Inc, a business that makes it easy to implement an e-commerce marketplace for your community or organization, creating a one-stop shop for buying products and services from businesses online. After becoming a mother, Cherie launched a hair bow business called the Pink Barrette when she was looking for something with flexible hours that would still allow her to stay home with her kids. She started selling at farmers markets, on her website, and on Amazon. It was at one of these farmers markets that she realized a lot of local businesses relied heavily on events to sell their products. Because of her experience with the Pink Barrette, she knew the impact that e-commerce could have on a local business. This led her to create Member Marketplace with her husband, a web developer. From there they've expanded to work with local businesses and organizations all over the country including Shop Iowa, Shop Made In Nevada, California Shop Small, and Shop North Dakota.Cherie chats more in this episode about her pivot from local business to startup and what it's been like to be a part of a startup accelerator. It was originally created for people who were trying to consistently sell their high-ticket offers but needed to learn how to craft them, and how to explain what the value is from the perspective of the person buying so that they didn't have to focus so much of their energy on proving themselves to people. To celebrate the 1-year anniversary of the program, I wanted to do a 4-part series where I walk you through the entire framework that helps service-based entrepreneurs and coaches attract aligned, qualified leads for their service and programs between $2K-$10K. Have your pen and paper ready to take notes, because you're going to need it.
