This week, I am delighted to welcome Scott Saslow, Founder and CEO of Palo Alto, CA-based ONE WORLD Investments Inc., which provides investment capital and advisory services to help organizations scale social impact. Over his career, Scott has been a founder or founding team member of seven start-up businesses. Prior to ONE WORLD, Scott was the Founder & CEO of The Institute of Executive Development, supporting executives in Global 2000 organizations including American Express, Blackrock, Intel, Time Warner, and the US Navy, and earlier in his career, he worked at Siebel Systems and Microsoft Corporation in leadership roles. Scott has authored over twenty-five articles for publications such as Forbes and Directorship and has been interviewed by and quoted in Harvard Business Review, Bloomberg and BusinessWeek. Scott expounds on the concept of “sustainability” as it pertains to a family office, and he provides his definition of a sustainable family office and explains why sustainability is important in this context. Having emphasized how important this objective is for the family, Scott then talks about how families and family offices pursue sustainability and how they prepare for it and how they achieve it. He outlines the many dimensions and ways to make a family office sustainable. Scott is just about to release his new book Building a Sustainable Family Office, which is an excellent, and to some extent, autobiographical, compendium of everything families need to know or consider as they create or take over a family office. The book is organized around and culminates in the definition of what Scott refers to as “the five key elements of success.” Scott gives us a sneak peek into what the five elements are and how each of them contributes to the long-term success of the family and its family office. Sustainability is also often referred to as an investment philosophy and a values system. Scott shares his views about how families can connect their aspiration for sustainable investing with their effort to build and operate a sustainable family office. Don't miss this insights-packed conversation with a rising-gen owner of a family enterprise, a successful entrepreneur and wealth creator, and a proponent of family sustainability and positive impact.

Ep. 167: From Surviving to Thriving: A Mom's Hierarchy of Needs and Well-Being with Leslie Forde

Diverse Thinking Different Learning

Many parents, particularly moms, feel like taking care of your health and well-being only comes after your family's needs are met. That essentially means that there's no time left for any form of self-care. But today's guest discusses how we can take better care of ourselves and in doing so, take better care of the ones we love. Leslie Forde is the CEO and Founder of Mom's Hierarchy of Needs®. Her business provides evidence-based tools for moms to reclaim time from the never-done list for well-being. And she helps employers retain caregivers. Over 3,500 parents have participated since March of 2020 in the Mom's Hierarchy of Needs research study - the longest running study of its kind about the pandemic's ongoing impact on the work/life, care, and wellness needs of parents.   Show Notes: [2:45] - Leslie returned to work after a second maternity leave and didn't learn the importance of a mom's hierarchy of needs until she completely burned out. [4:19] - When she went back to work, she felt like the answer was to just work “harder.” [5:26] - In hindsight, there were a lot of signs that she was not okay. Everyone was flourishing except for her. [7:46] - Mom's Hierarchy of Needs has self-care at the top. But the reason we don't spend time on this is because the other things are never done. [10:28] - If you think that you will start something for yourself when something else is done, you will never start. [11:58] - Health problems for moms often don't show up until later in life and can be attributed to ignoring self-care practices. [14:10] - Leslie shares a story about making cookies and how a hobby can turn into something stressful. [15:51] - Your health and well-being is of equal importance to your children's health and well-being. [16:55] - Consequences of ignoring health are gradual and it could feel easier to put it off compared to more immediate consequences of focusing on your family. [18:38] - Perfection is not critical. Be flexible and find a set of practices that work for you. [19:59] - Mom-guilt is real and it is a heavy weight. [21:57] - Navigating the health and unique needs of a neurodiverse child is huge and a significant amount of work. [23:08] - Awareness and education is improving and is better than it's ever been. But the systems in place are still not designed to help those who learn and think differently. [25:12] - Give yourself achievable goals that will make you feel the success of accomplishing work that needs to be done, but in more manageable ways. [26:12] - Guilt can be paralyzing, depressing, and decelerating. [27:36] - Self-care doesn't mean a spa day. It could mean a good night's sleep or a healthy meal. [29:03] - Find the resources that will help you. Your commitment is not to solve the problem. You don't have to do it alone. [30:32] - Pick something from the top of Mom's Hierarchy of Needs and make it a habit. [33:37] - If you can create a routine out of something, it will relieve a lot of the mental load of maintaining it. [36:46] - Defer, eliminate, outsource, or spouse source things that are too much to manage at once.   About Our Guest: Leslie has used research to inform growth and innovation strategy for over 20 years. Most recently, she held leadership positions at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Care.com and CSpace, an Omnicom market research agency. And for the past decade, she's focused on media and technology for the childcare, eldercare, mental health, and education sectors. She's a frequent speaker and consultant to organizations on how to retain and support parents, caregivers, and people of color, including HubSpot, Merck, Scholastic and the Barr Foundation. Her writing about well-being, equity and the future of work has appeared in The Washington Post, Slate, Parents Magazine, TLNT, Directorship and her website, Mom's Hierarchy of Needs among other publications. She's been quoted in the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, CNN, National Geographic, Fast Company, US News & World Report, SHRM, and many other outlets.   Connect with Leslie: Email: Leslie@momshierarchyofneeds.com Mom's Hierarchy of Needs Website Mom's Hierarchy of Needs on Instagram   Links and Related Resources: TimeCheck App Mom's Hierarchy of Needs Website   Connect with Us: Get on our Email List Book a Consultation Get Support and Connect with a ChildNEXUS Provider Register for Our Self-Paced Mini Courses with LIVE AMA Sessions   The Diverse Thinking Different Learning podcast is intended for informational purposes only and is not a substitute for medical or legal advice, diagnosis, or treatment. His work is often behind the scenes and focused on highly sensitive and fate-making issues. Fortune magazine published a profile of Ram in which it called him “the most influential consultant alive.” His book Execution, lauded for its practicality, spent more than 150 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list. Ram's energetic, interactive teaching style has won him several awards, including from GE's famous Crotonville Institute and Northwestern. Ram was elected a Distinguished Fellow of the National Academy of Human Resources and was named one of the most influential people in corporate governance and the board room by Directorship magazine. He has served on the Blue Ribbon Commission on Corporate Governance and serves or has served on a dozen boards in the U.S., Brazil, China, India, Canada, and Dubai. He is the author with Geri Willigan of Leading Through Inflation: And Recession And Stagflation. In this conversation, Ram and I explore the changing macroeconomic environment and what leaders can do to address it. We discuss the importance of managing cash well and how pricing decisions can be made effectively. Plus, we discuss the critical nature of partnerships throughout the supply chain — and where the opportunities may be in the midst of challenge. Key Points Inflation consumes cash. Cash management is the number one risk to an organization during this time. The way to get ahead of the curve is to be predictive vs. reactive. This may be a time the existing business model needs to change. Inflation creates an illusion of growth. It's important to adjust for this in all reporting and planning. Work with all sides of the value chain. Help customers deal with rising costs while also working closely with suppliers. Regular communication is essential. Smaller, regular price adjustments are better than less frequent, larger increases. Resist the temptation to offer less for the same price. But, through the grace of God, she now has been in long term recovery which means being off all opiates for over 15 years. Following her own freedom from drugs, Sara has done much to help many others find help. Sara has done a number of trainings and speaking engagements all over the United States on topics of Trauma Informed Care, Medicated Assisted Treatment and Recovery Oriented Systems of Care. For the last 12 years, Sara has been doing outreach with people who are experiencing homelessness and discovering how to support those individuals in bettering their lives. Part of this work was in her Directorship with Unlimited Alternatives, a nonprofit who served 140 people a day who were experiencing homelessness, substance abuse issues and severe mental health issues. But most significantly, Sara was born again as a true follower of Jesus Christ almost 4 years ago. As a result, she is now more passionate than ever to serve all people who might be in a time of need, by sharing the Gospel with them, and clearly showing them Christ's love, mercy and grace. In this podcast, Sara tells the story of how her life deteriorated to the point that she became addicted to heroin, and then how she was delivered from that addiction. She ultimately became a leader in a treatment center, but was still feeling emptiness in her heart. Then, through amazing circumstances that only God could orchestrate, she came to faith in Jesus Christ and found the ultimate joy that has no regrets and continues forever.

It's our final episode of the 2021-22 season as we wrap up an incredible season and an amazing final round in which Milan brought home the Serie A trophy and added a 19th Scudetto badge to its glorious history, with an emphatic 3-0 victory at Sassuolo. The Rossoneri steamrolled the Neroverdi in the first half with a breathless attacking barrage that sealed La Diavola's 11th Serie A crown and ended any chance of a final day miracle for their Inter rivals. We discuss the growth of this Milan team, the management under Stefano Pioli, Directorship of Paolo Maldini and others, and the ownership of the club by Elliott Management Corporation since 2018. And what about Inter? Nicky and Mina wonder what regrets they'll have after a season of fine margins, and how will they build back better for next season? It was a final day relegation battle that didn't see any teams do any favours for those fighting for their Serie A lives, as Cagliari incredibly couldn't find a way to score against bottom side Venezia, and now join them in Serie B. But the real final day miracle story, despite a thrashing at home by Udinese, was Salernitana's salvezza to go around again in Serie A, amid phenomenal scenes of celebration with the passionate Granata tifosi at the Stadio Arechi and in the city of Salerno. It's another amazing Davide Nicola rescue story, of a club which came so close to not finishing the season in Serie A, or even existing, around Christmas time. Oh calcio... we love you! Fiorentina earned a European place for next season by beating Juventus, and they'll compete in the Europa Conference League next season, and is Paul Pogba returning to Juventus? And what does Gian Piero Gasperini's future look like now that Atalanta has missed out on a European competition spot for the first time in years? It's been a fun ride. Good Will Hunters

I'd like to begin by acknowledging the traditional custodians of the land that I record these episodes on, the Gadigal people of the Eora nations. I pay my respects to their elders past, present and emerging and I extend that respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people listening today. Welcome to the seventh episode in our leadership series of Good Will Hunters. I have to admit, this series was a bit of a risk. It's the first series we've done without a series partner in two years. I went back to basics and did it all myself - none of the usual help with sourcing guests or designing social media posts or marking up transcripts - it was all me, at home, making it happen and of course working with our brilliant sound editor Bruce Heald from Noise International. The series was self-funded, because leadership is an issue I personally care so much about and when I came up with the idea for this series, there was no going back. I was completely determined to have conversations on purpose-driven leadership with some outstanding guests. And the risk has paid off - the response to this series has been huge, but it's also been very personal. I've never had so many listeners get in touch to share their own challenges in regards to having a purpose-driven, values-aligned career at the heart of social change and community development. I know that we're onto something special here, and I have some big plans for what comes next. But for now, we'll air the final episode in our first leadership series today, and then we'll be airing a very special three-part series recorded at the OzWater conference in mid-May. You would remember our water series last year, with our two outstanding hosts Michael Wilson and Rosie Wheen - well, after much demand, they're back with a three-part series continuing the conversation on Water for Development. Stay tuned for that in the coming fortnight. Now today's guest is Peter Chandra. Peter is an experienced Executive Leader and Board Director. I met Peter last year when I undertook my Foundations of Directorship course with the Australian Institute of Company Directors. It was a significant milestone for me personally, because it was the first big investment I'd made in the next stage of my leadership journey. It was daunting, as the average age in the room was probably double my age, and I felt a bit out of place in the boardroom. But Peter was a supportive and insightful facilitator, and we have stayed in touch since. In this episode, Peter reflects on his leadership journey, and the lessons he's learnt as a board director, and also as an executive in the development and not for profit sectors. Peter shares his philosophy on aid and empowerment, which aligns closely with my own. I hope you enjoy the episode, with Peter Chandra.

The Pursuit of Health Podcast

On this episode of The Pursuit of Health Podcast we dive further into the realm of public health by pausing to learn about the invaluable role of the Physician Assistant.  We are fortunate to have a frontline clinician, educator and pioneer, Joseph M. Daleo, as our guest to take us through this topic. Major Daleo is an active member of the US Army Reserve and holds a Doctorate Degree of Physician Assistant Studies from Touro University. He wears many honorable hats including an Assistant Professorship and the Directorship of Clinical Operations at NY Touro College's Physician Assistant Program.  He is a Clinical Instructor for SUNY Stony Brook's Family Medicine and Nurse Practitioner Program as well as the Supervising Physician Assistant for the American Family Care's Covid-19 Mitigation and Vaccination Program.  Major Daleo begins our discussion by taking us through his often bumpy personal journey to pursue a health career as a practicing Physician Assistant and educator. In so doing, he emphasizes that Physician Assistants are a vital and unique profession within the US healthcare system. He explains the honorable history of the Physician Assistant profession in the US and marvels at the exponential growth of this field both domestically and globally over the past few decades. Our guest sheds some very important light on the misconceptions about the Physician Assistant model, stressing that this model supports a complementary, not adversarial, interaction of healthcare professionals on behalf of the patient. He provides us with a sobering reminder of the serious gaps and failures of our current system and provides much needed recommendations to make healthcare partnerships stronger to address the disparities of acute and chronic disease.  He sees physician assistants as one of the critical  “force multipliers” of a potentially robust approach to healthcare reform.  We finish our fascinating discussion with Major Daleo wisely advising us all to continue to adopt the pioneer spirit that made our health system exceptional in the first place.  He urges us to remain open-minded so that we may learn and apply new preventative and treatment modalities to the benefit of our patients, clinicians and society.  Dr. Fethke and the team at The Pursuit of Health Podcast  look forward to our audience's feedback. We can be reached @drfethkemd on Facebook and Instagram, and our upcoming website - drfethkemd.com.  References:https://www.researchgate.net/publication/236248847_Origins_of_the_physician_assistant_movement_in_the_United_Stateshttps://pahx.org/timeline/https://www.healthleadersmedia.com/clinical-care/why-physician-assistants-and-nurse-practitioners-need-supervision-say-physician-groupshttps://www.kevinmd.com/blog/2020/01/stop-the-war-on-pas-and-nps.htmlhttps://journalofethics.ama-assn.org/article/physician-assistants-and-their-role-primary-care/2012-05https://www.bls.gov/ooh/healthcare/physician-assistants.htmhttps://bemoacademicconsulting.com/blog/pa-vs-md

On this special episode of the Pursuit of Health Podcast we embark on our first venture outside the US. Our guest, Sagie Pillay, comes to us from the city of Johannesburg in the amazing country of South Africa.   Mr. Pillay has an extensive worldwide education in healthcare policy and administration, and has studied on almost every major continent around the globe. He notably received his Masters in Health Economics, Management and Policy from London's University of Leeds; a diploma in Senior Executive Leadership and Strategy from Harvard's Business School; an MBA in Finance, Leadership and Change Management from Liverpool's, London; and a degree in Adult Education from the University of Kwa Zulu Natal, South Africa.  He has served South Africa and the African continent through many leadership roles, including as an academic researcher in Health Economics and Financing at the University of Natal Medical School; the Directorship for Hospital Management Decentralization at the National Department of Health in the nation's capital of Pretoria; the CEO of the Kimberly Hospitals Complex for the Department of Health and Welfare in the Northern Cape; the CEO of the National Health Laboratory Services; and the Founding Executive Director of the African Society for Laboratory Medicine (ASLM). He currently is the Chief Operations Officer at Wits Health Consortium, Johannesburg, South Africa.  In Part 1 of this 3-part episode, Mr. Pillay takes us through the history of independence and rebirth of his nation in 1990-1991 from the unique perspective of a healthcare leader on the frontlines. He shares the excitement and apprehensions during the first elections held by the leading party - the African National Congress - in this reborn nation.  Now three decades later, he looks honestly upon his remarkable professional journey. Initially the concept of a personal future and his own career were not a priority as he and his compatriots put any pretense of self-fulfillment on hold until they could establish equitable self governance for everyone.   Mr. Pillay emphasizes the unique evolution of the South African healthcare system as a critical part of the formation of this new government. Primary healthcare was intentionally positioned at the base of this system to address the needs of the majority and support the key elements of South Africa's unique Freedom Charter. Most importantly, he recognizes that the resilience and strength of the country's society was founded on a Trust established through a robust Public Health system.  Mr. Pillay's reflections on his first ventures away from academia and into public service through an unexpected leadership role in the new government are simultaneously filled with irony and gratitude. He shares the surprising story of his entry into the hospital system at the national level that forever changed his career path and helped shape the fortunes and well-being of his people.  He credits the success of this now 30 year old reborn nation and his career to an approach and attitude that elevates and supports the Collective will and abilities of many individuals from different backgrounds and beliefs. By establishing Trust through such a Team Approach he believes South Africa is prepared to continue forward in the face of any odds.  Dr. Fethke and Mr. Pillay conclude the first part of this discussion by recognizing the commonalities between South Africa and the US in their mutual struggles for healthcare reform.  They both conclude that these two relatively young nations have much wisdom to share with each other and the world at this pivotal time.  On the upcoming Part 2 of Episode 15, Mr. Pillay teaches us about South Africa's prominent and unique experience with HIV. Did their struggle with HIV prepare them for the Covid-19 pandemic? Join us next time to find out.
