On June 27th, 1990, Eric Christiansen’s life was changed in an instant when he lost everything he owned in the Santa Barbara Painted Cave fire. Flames engulfed his house, taking all his possessions, and starting him on a new path entirely. From this disaster, he understands trauma, the resilience of the human spirit, and how important HOPE is to heal. At first Eric turned to drugs and alcohol, but soon realised that despite loosing all his earthly possessions he had actually gained everything, and started to put his focus into his film making.Today, Eric is a seven-time Emmy Award recipient, with four films that focus on the impact of trauma on individuals, families and communities. His new film UnMASKing HOPE follows a disparate group of people whose extraordinary stories of survival most of us have heard only in snippets on the news. Having lived through mass shootings, terror attacks, combat and sexual assaults, these brave trauma survivors don “masks” to hide their pain and suffering as they navigate their new existence that is often stymied by PTSD, physical injury and emotional turmoil. In order to heal, they must confront what’s happened to them and begin their journey from seclusion to inclusion. And as we follow their moving stories, we are all inspired to find hope again and be who we were born to be. It was early on in life that Bryan Falchuk’s world spiralled out of control. Food became the one thing that relieved his anxiety, soothed his pain and gave him a sense of control. Except there was no control, and very quickly he became unhappy as well as obese. He remained obese and living the standard American life for many many years, and then his wife got sick. Really sick. And he could see how his lifestyle wasn’t helping. It was then that he decided to give up mediocracy, and unhappiness, as he began to pursue a life where he could design his outcomes. He went on to getting healthy, running a marathon, all whilst committing to no more than one day of effort at a time. Today Bryan is a Life Coach helping others to understand how they, can overcome challenges, find happiness and succeed. When Cam Calkoen was born with cerebral palsy, his parents were told that he may never walk again, let alone talk, or live a normal life, But Cam has never let that hold him back. In fact, when someone says something is a ‘possibility’ Cam sees it as an ‘opportunity’ and the only reason for one to miss out is by not being competitive enough. Competition comes in many forms but Cam believes that our biggest competitor is the one looking back at us in the mirror. Cam has gone from doubting his ability to run, to representing New Zealand in athletics, winning championships in New Zealand, Australia and Canada, and now taking his winning attitude into diverse environments that encourage others to achieve their personal best. From projects that enhance relations amongst people of the world through to continually pushing through personal, physical and emotional barriers Cam ensures each day is lived to the max! Cams philosophies, values and dynamic vision has led to him to working in Japan, building a Tuberculosis Ward and School Library in Vanuatu, speaking as far as New York and London and regularly having his leadership recognized in the form of awards and scholarships. In 2006 Cam became one of the youngest recipient’s worldwide to receive a Paul Harris Fellow from Rotary. As a 21 year old this prestigious award (which he has since received twice) recognised the significant contribution he had made in turning a communities dream (the Yes Disability Resource Centre) into reality. As the Ambassador Cam was the figurehead to a NZ$4 million project and learnt what it took to make a dream into reality. During this time he saw the potential in linking his ever-growing network together with young disabled people so they to could develop tools and processes to realise their dreams, from this Cam founded the Carabiner Mentoring program. Through the journey to make it into the top ten in the world for his sport Cam started to see the world as his playground and exited near the peak of his running career. Wanting to leave a much bigger impact on the world he didn’t want to compete in an environment governed by the abilities of his Cerebral Palsy but determined by the abilities of himself as a human being where he could encourage more people into their top ten, the top ten of their business, job, sport or school, the top ten percent of who they can be through striving toward a personal best. Today Cam inspires people with universal backgrounds to dream big, because with big dreams comes a big life. With over ten years experience in fundraising, social entrepreneurship and inspiring the motivation of others Cam has packaged himself into a unique brand for those looking to create a lasting impact. Cam doesn’t hide from the fact that he is still on a journey and his Everest is yet to be conquered. But perhaps it is his uniqueness as a speaker to be sharing an awesome journey in the pursuit of an awesome outcome that sees audiences connect with his message and absorb an energy that inspires them to dream big to achieve more. Some key quotes from our conversation include: I had the best childhood. I wouldn't change anything (6:42) I was aware that I didn't want to be left out ( 7:02) Because I was different, it was MY responsibility, no one else's responsibility to build connection and rapport (7:06) From a very young age, I was a dreamer (7:55) I saw a world, where from a really young age, I wanted to contribute to it in the most awesome way (8:06) Instead of seeing it as an impediment, I saw it as an accent (9:18) If that's how my dictionary sees me, then how does society see me? (11:43) It led to a real low low point in my life (12:11) If you are different in any way, you need to embrace every opportunity that you are to showcase who you are, and what you have to offer this world (15:19) It's recognising that difference really can be a good thing (17:43) Having that ability and strength to dream is really important (18:25) One of the biggest challenges is managing the way that I operate, but at the same time having the confidence that what I have done in the last 34 years has worked pretty well (20:33) Believe in the power of your dreams! (23:53) You've got to keep educating yourself (27:47) Expanding that mindset is one of the most rewarding things you could ever do (32:25) We can look at things from so many different perspectives, and we just need to make one of those perspectives work for us (33:15) You can find more of Cam at: Website: https://www.camcalkoen.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CamCalkoenInspirationalSpeaker/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/camcalkoen __________________________ You can find more of Kirsty at: Website: http://kirstysalisbury.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kirstysalisb... Early in her marriage, Linda Guirey's life took a dramatic turn following just 6 words spoken by her husband. "I want to become a Woman." These words opened the door to a journey that Linda never expected. She loved him. So would she stay with him? Would she support his change? Today, Linda chats about her fears, her loss, her hope and her confusion, and how she has enabled others to have the courage to face their problems and pain, no matter how big they seem. Her journey is one of courage, growth, acceptance and learning how experiences don't have to define us - it's the thinking and meaning that we apply to those experiences that will create our reality. Linda is a keynote speaker, trainer, and author, speaking on 'Mindset', and how we can all become intentional with what we say, do and think. Some key quotes from our discussion include: He then said "I need to let you know that I'm a cross dresser" (2:27) The first reaction was shock (3:54) Then my husband said to me "I've got something really serious to tell you (7:55) What he said next was nothing on my radar (7:61) That was my biggest biggest fear...all of those years ( 8:11) And my world stopped because I didn't know what to do next (9:06) There were 5 things that I considered at the time to help me through with the process (10:13) I was confused. I was angry, because I had been convinced for so long that it wasn't going to happen (11:19) This was the one thing I never wanted to happen ( 11:32) I also needed to get more rational thinking Then I considered how authentic I was going to be (12:59) Are you making a decision for you? Or are you making a decision someone else wants you to make (13:07) I needed to satisfy my highest values ( 15:07) I needed to totally understand that my emotions were going to be all over the place (15:55) I decided to stay with him because we had a really good marriage, but the marriage in it's definition was going to change. And I was going to be living with my sister ( 16:52) I had to grieve for my husband. Because it was like he had dies ( 17:42) The grief of loosing the person you fell in love with and the person that you married and the man that you loved is strong. It's like they've died (18:19) For me, regrets are the biggest waste of time (21:28) I think we can be distracted from things that are happening in our life, from what other people think we should do, and other peoples chatter (26:57) You've just got to be true to yourself 40:27) You are totally responsible for your life. For everything you say, everything you think, everything you do, everything you believe (47:27) It's so easy to blame (47:47) In everything you do, be kind (47:72) For more about Linda, visit: Website: www.lindaguirey.co.nz Email: linda@lindaguirey.co.nz Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Linda.Guirey.Choice.Champion Twitter: https://twitter.com/lindaguirey Contact Linda direct to find out more about her book 'Reflections in the Face of Change - My Journey of Courage, Growth and Acceptence' ______________________ You can find more of Kirsty at: Website: http://kirstysalisbury.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kirstysalisb Twitter: https://twitter.com/Kirstysalis Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kirstysalis Kirsty Salisbury is a Speaker, Podcaster and Coach. (13:17 It can't go on like this, something has to change (14:08) This was where I could really make something positive come from something so negative (17:38) I feel as though I've been given an incredible opportunity (17:58) I believe that all of this happened for a reason so that I could go on to share what I've discovered, what I've learn't (18:06) I'm walking living proof that you can turn your life around - 100% (18:50) I think for many years I didn't allow myself to feel true happiness (19:10) Why would I do something to myself that makes me feel bad? I want to do stuff that makes me feel good (21:00) Wishing my way to 5:30pm, when it was ok to have a glass of wine (21:22) I never understood the link between mental health and physical activity (22:35) I now obviously realise that what I put into my body has a direct impact on my mental health as well (23:10) I didn't start with all of these habits, it was one little step at a time (22:55) Learn how to fall in love with yourself (28:10) Our life is so short. At the age of 20 years old, Daniel survived a car accident which would change him forever. It left him with a shattered spine, broken bones and paralysis from his chest down. He was told he might never walk again, but proved medical staff wrong by walking out of hospital just 6 weeks later, although weak and brittle. This shake-up led him to leave his career, partner, apartment: his entire life behind him. After being homeless and unemployed for 6 months he rebuilt his life into something beyond inspirational. Today, Daniel heads up The Phoenix Experience - the chance to press pause on your everyday routine. To leave your phone at home and focus on the one person that matters: you. To take the time to remember what’s truly important to you. When you give back to yourself those around you will benefit. You become a better partner, parent, leader, team-member. A better you. Some key quotes from our conversation include: I felt like I was headed for a train wreck. I was overweight, I was out of balance, I was disconnected from my family, and I thought "For once I'm actually going to take control" (3:16) He fell asleep and we ran into a bridge at 100kms an hour (5:34) My neck was shattered. I had a complete burst fracture in my C7, and a broken back, a broken arm, and pretty much left for dead really (6:18) I didn't realise how bad my injuries were (9:15) Everyone used to write me off (16:24) I did it to prove to myself that my injuries wouldn't hold me back (16:35) Everyone told me that if I keep doing what I'm doing that my body would be full of arthritis by the time I was 40, and I wouldn't be able to work (19:20) It's daily. You need to set yourself up daily (23:35) Nothing happens without the mind, and nothing happens without the body ( 27:44) Once we've got these beliefs, we'll look for things to confirm our beliefs - negative or positive (30:04) There's always another level (36:20) More about The Phoenix Experience: Our lives are extremely busy. Constant pressure at work, family and social commitments, the relentless ding of emails and phone calls; we rarely get time for ourselves. Unsure what we would do if we did have time. We can easily forget what’s important to us. Our relationships can fade, our health can suffer and our desire to perform at work can dwindle. When we are with those we care about we are at times not truly present or “in the moment.” The Phoenix Experience helps create awareness, focus and brings balance into each area of our lives. At 7 years old, Donna Campisi survived a sudden stroke (and other serious complications) which left her grasping for life. Doctors said she would never walk or talk again, yet today she sets amazing challenges to helps others to overcome their situations and to achieve. In 2012, Donna set herself the challenge to go from 30 wobbly steps to running an entire marathon! No small feat. Not only did she achieve her goal, but she also inspired hundreds of people along the way and her marathon success raised $36,000 for the Royal Children’s Hospital Foundation. Most of all, she proved that there’s no such thing as can’t! Today, Donna is an inspirational speaker, workshop facilitator, and coach. She's a published author, with her most recent book titled ‘The Unlikely Marathoner – How to conquer your big goal and run with it’, gained keen interest before printing even started. She uses her blog on www.RunDonnaRun.com.au to inspire many people around the world, and Donna believes that any challenge is achievable when broken into ‘baby steps’ and having the right mindset. She explains with confidence: ‘Don’t just take opportunities when they come… Create opportunities!’ Some key quotes from our conversation include: I don't worry that it will happen again, because I'm not the type of person to focus on what if's...(8:46) There was a time where I was living like a time bomb (9:09) I'm the type of person that likes to focus on what I can do (13:05) I started with 20 steps He said Donna, anybody can run a marathon, it's all to do with your mindset (21:35) There's no such thing as can't (22:26) I could either feel sorry for myself and stay in a wheel chair and have other people do things for me (26:10) I didn't want to be a hassle to my parents or my family (26:40) My first step is believing you can (28:25) If you've got a big goal but you're not believing that you can, then you may as well not even try... (28:35) Is this going to make me go backwards? I've put a lot of work into this body (39:45) They always showed strength to me, and that is probably what kept me going (46:50) You can find more of Donna at: Website: www.rundonnarun.com.au FB Group: www.facebook.com/groups/adventurebeyondlimits FB page: https://www.facebook.com/RunDonnaRun Her running coaches: http://brewstersrunning.com/ Plus you can pick up a copy of her latest book 'The Unlikely Marathoner' at http://theunlikelymarathoner.com
In 2013, Kelly began a journey that no one could have expected. Her world was completely rocked when something that seemed like a gift of life, actually turned out to be quite the opposite. In our conversation today, Kelly shares how her difficult life journey and experiences have taught her to focus on living life on her own terms, allowing herself to enjoy the present moment, and to continually gauge whether she is truly happy. There's no sugar coating her words, and the beauty of her honesty offers a huge amount of value. Some key quotes from our conversation include: We've got to be the rock, not the ocean I was so determined to not let it have long term damage on me. Now I've turned it into something that I can use positively You just don't know when your number is up, and I wanted to live the most fabulous life that I could....Im just interested in being true to myself It's about learning as much about yourself and evolving as much as you can. I wanted to turn it into something that didn't leave me damaged. And there will always be a bit of damage there, but to use that in a way now that it gives me strength. I'm living life on my terms but it sure doesn't look like the way I thought it would look! And I see that as a strength now Make the most of all of it. Go for it! Who cares what anyone else thinks I keep listening to myself, and I gauge whether I'm happy, and I truly am It's nice to know that the decisions you are making are the right ones It takes a very strong women to stop! Learning that you are not your thought Those thoughts that come into your head - learn to observe it, but not attach yourself to it Being a lot slower with everything I do now, but achieving the same amount... Being a hell of a lot gentler on myself and seeing that as a strength When it comes to happiness and fear, we try to shove happiness over top of it It's actually ok to sit there with your anger, and actually feel it and acknowledge it, or sit with your sadness. Sometimes you need to sit with your discomfort instead of mask it Be ok to seek out different ways to heal it. I'm just really enjoying the present moment
Jessie Kendall didn't breath for the first 20 minutes of her life. This not only left her with mild Cerebral Palsy, but some pretty full on predictions from doctors on how her life would be. It was in her late teens when Jessie was in the depths of depression and struggling with mental health issues that she discovered NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming), and used it to transform herself. Today, she is passionate about life, and also about helping others out of their own suffering to live to their true potential. She uses NLP to help her clients eliminate causes of anything undesirable they are experiencing, as well train their mind to automatically think and behave in a way to that is conducive to their best outcome. of Jessie has set up her own successful coaching business - Empower Me Now, and is also a public speaker. Some key quotes from our conversation include: When I was born, I didn't breath for 20 minutes (3:15) My were told Id be in a wheel chair for the rest of my life (3:36) It wasn't until my teenage years, when I started becoming an adult that things started really affecting me (4:25) I was on the emergency list of the anxiety disorders unit (5:02) I had tried what I thought was everything in the book (8:10) ...NLP, and I thought - 'What the hells that?' (9:00) The next morning, I woke up and I had a clear mind! (9:42) I had very low self worth, so I think a lot of the anxiety stemmed from that ( 11:05) So what NLP is - is how we the language in our mind and with others. What NLP involves is a specific form of processes that we use with the mind in a very controlled state ( 12:57) We use it to go back to remove from your nervous system or your mind the memories that are stored within your unconscious mind ( 13:20) These exercises, trigger on an unconscious level our cellular memory where all this stuff is stored (13:55) Our whole life of all our past experiences, our beliefs, our values are totally affecting us today (15:13) We only use 15- 20% of our conscious mind, so all these memories (traumatic experiences or whatever it may have been in life) is stored in that part of the mind that we don't consciously think about on a daily basis (16:14) I was my own biggest skeptic - I was thinking 'This is just so insane - how could this stuff work?' (18:04) I can't deny the evidence from what I was to what I am now (18:23) It is our perception that is creating our reality, and if we listen to these people we can often get into a mindset of being a victim (44:40) here is nothing you cannot achieve - we've just got to be able to believe that. (44:16) Nothing has any meaning but the meaning that you give it (46:35) You can find more of Jessie at: www.facebook.com/empowermenow.co.nz www.empowermenow.co.nz

(3:05) In elementary I was a track star (3:30) I didn't know what it was like to be thin (4:47) Maybe to some extent I was hiding my true personality (6:30) After I lost the weight I kind of bloomed and blossomed and came into my own independence, my own power.(6:40) I didn't know a lot about food, about cooking or about nutrition (10:57) Part of the process to becoming a new you is to reevaluate where you are today and where you would like to be tomorrow ( 30:40) That first month, I lost 20 pounds (22:24) Maybe I should figure out who the new me is and how I can use this experience to help other people (28:25) There is always something good that you are doing in your life (34:40) There's always good things coming ahead of you ( 35:04) The only person you want to be better than, is the person you were yesterday (39:45) Bliss starts TODAY (43:06) In Jenn's 5 Days to Body Bliss program, you discover how to: Increase confidence, even if you have low self-esteem Eat for energy, without counting a thing! In 2010 Tayla Stone's life was flipped upside down following a dirt bike accident which left her paralysed and a future as a T12 incomplete paraplegic. Her whole life changed in an instant. Then in 2015, Tayla lost one of her strongest supporters - her Mother. Tayla's first hand experience of hardship and challenges have enabled her to draw on her inner strength and to design a life of purpose. She continues to train her body physically, and to build up her strength. Whilst she says she expects nothing from her future, she gives life her all and focusses on seeing the good with the not-so-good. Some key quotes from our conversation include: So what, I'm a paraplegic. It doesn't mean anything. Things could be a lot worse(8:05) One day I just woke up and thought, 'just get over yourself' basically (8:10) I'm just trying to see the good in it, to see the funny side with being paralysed (8:42) Having that sense of humour helped heaps, because it wasn't all doom and gloom (9:47) There are limitations, but there are always limitations, no matter what in life (12:17) Because you are paralysed, you can't do this, you can't do that...so I was already telling myself I can't do those things, but really, I can... (12:52) It's focusing in on what you can do, and not putting limitations on yourself (13:27) As soon as something bad happens to you, your brain automatically goes straight to the negative side (14:02) Try not to get buried in that negative hole (14:19) The doctor sat down and told me that I had 5% chance to walk again ( 16:45) I hated everything at the time (17:00) A couple of years later, it just clicked. I woke up one morning and thought what was the point about being depressed about it? (17:41) Well maybe I'm just going to live a positive life, but be thankful I had a second chance at it. ( 18:20) I could sit there for the rest of my life, and always focus on that, but by doing that I'm not actually moving on with my new life (18:53) If you just keep going, and you don't focus on the negative things, the positive things just come naturally. Lana Jelenjev was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014. And after almost 2 years of treatment, she took time to reconnect with herself and her mission. It was during this time that she realised how it is our responsibility to be SELF-FULL. Because when we are selfish, we have no room to meet the needs of others, and when we are selfless, we fail to meet our own needs. But when we are self-full that’s when magic happens. Lana is the co founder of She Dares, a website and group of curious women exploring the science, myths, taboos and possibilities surrounding a modern women and why they should invest and prioritise in her personal stack of gold. As a child Lana loved writing poetry and have different diaries and notebooks where she scribbled her thoughts. "I find it alarming if I cannot find a pen and paper next to me, for those 'just in case I have a brilliant idea' moments" she says. In this episode: Lana shares some of her key messages around self-fullness and how we need to prioritise ourself sometimes to be the best for others. How to not say the wrong thing to someone going through a crisis or hardship. The inner circles of support and how to really help someone who needs it. Her take on life design and how 'living in the now' plays a big part in it. Some key quotes from our conversation: After the diagnosis, I heard myself talk as though the story of my Mum was my story (3:36) When I heard myself attaching myself to her story, it really took me back and made me re-evaluate as to how I would move forward with this (4:10) At one part, our kids had death as a normal theme in the family (5:40) What I like to ask myself is 'What is alive in you?' (8:05) How do I own the energy that I bring in? (16:04) We were never taught to practice self-fullness. We were always told that if we do this, we are selfish (16:36) We get so lost with patterns of behaviour (18:00) What is most crucial to ask is how can it affect the now? (18:11) Whatever it was that I was facing at that point was on survival mode (23:30) It's after treatment that a lot of insecurities/questions come in (24:00) It's really a re-designing of life (30:22) I want to really emphasise filling your own cup. Because everything else can flow from there (33:10) You can find more about Lana at: Website link: http://www.shedares.net/ FB group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/shedares/ FB page: https://www.facebook.com/SheDaresAmsterdam/

Abused from the age of two and left homeless at the age of 14, Kylie Edwards had moved house more times than she had had birthdays and lived with 15 different families before she was 23. In the years since, Kylie emigrated to a foreign country for five years (and visited over 20 more), lived a monastic life in Nepal, and experienced poverty at 40 while re-educating herself, proving to her that everyone had a story and that everyone had a different way of looking at the world. As a young woman on her journey to seek some kind of normality, Kylie’s life was based on one decision: To figure out how to live without hate in her heart. Little did she know that the journey of liberating herself from the past would lead her to extraordinary heights of inner happiness. While Kylie has always said that being happy is a choice, nobody has ever accepted this simple explanation. She believes it is finding your own true self and being true to your daily decisions that pave the way to happiness. But most people think they are bound by commitments, responsibilities and social norms, however social norms are incredibly fluid under the influence of multiculturalism and boundaries are always being pushed. With mental health illnesses affecting more than half of the western population, it is becoming increasingly more urgent to help people through times of change and adversity by helping them explore the wonder of curiosity and joy. Kylie is the author of Why Surviving is Not Enough: How to Reinvent Yourself by Embracing Change. Her intrigue (more like an obsession really) of human behaviour finally led her to complete a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology (with a focus on gender) at Wollongong University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Counseling at the Australian College of Applied Psychology, completing her internship at the mental health ward at Mosman Private Hospital. To connect with Kylie, you can email her at kylie.edwards@unlimitedhappiness.com.au
