Country Music Hall of Famer Lacy J. Dalton The Queen of Country Music LACY'S BIO Lacy J. Dalton (born Jill Lynne Byrem on October 13, 1946 in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania), is an American country singer and songwriter with a career that has spanned many decades and touched the hearts of millions of music fans. In March 2017 Lacy J Dalton was inducted into the North American Country Music Association International Hall of Fame, and in 2022 she was awarded a Lifetime Career Achievement Award from the Josie Music Awards, the largest independent music awards show in the country. She's one of the most instantly recognizable voices in music – the woman People Magazine called “Country's Bonnie Raitt.” From the first time Lacy J Dalton caught the public's ear, that soulful delivery, full of texture and grit, has been a mainstay of Country Music. When you sit to listen to a Lacy J Dalton album, you find yourself pulled in by the very power and heart of this vocalist, because she's not merely performing a ten-song set, she's bringing each and every tune to life. It's as if they were all written especially for her. Prior to recording with Harbor Records in 1978 as Jill Croston, she like many before her, held many jobs to survive and support her family. As a truck stop waitress and singer, she would wait tables and then take the stage to sing a few songs. In June 1979, Lacy J Dalton was signed by Columbia Records and quickly rose to national prominence with Crazy Blue Eyes, which she wrote with her longest friend, Mary McFadden, and which raced to #7 on the Billboard Country Charts. Her hard work and dedication paid off in 1979 when she was awarded the Academy of Country Music's Top New Female Vocalist of the Year. Lacy's success was powered not just by the artist's recordings, but by a stage show that truly electrified audiences. She quickly became one of the few women who could successfully open a show for the likes of Hank Williams, Jr., Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard or Charlie Daniels. Not only could she do it, but she left audiences across the country hollering for more. Her signature song 16th Avenue, became the Anthem for Nashville songwriters. Her other hit records are legendary million-airplay cuts and include Crazy Blue Eyes, Takin' It Easy, Everybody Makes Mistakes, Hillbilly Girl with the Blues, Hard Times, and the worldwide hit Black Coffee. In addition to her Top New Female Vocalist award, she also brought home numerous Grammy nominations and 3 prestigious, back to back (1979, 1980, 1981) Bay Area Music Awards for Best Country-Folk Recordings. Lacy appeared on those shows with the likes of Neil Young, The Grateful Dead, Grace Slick and the Jefferson Airplane. Lacy's collaboration with Willie Nelson on his platinum Half Nelson CD was a high spot for her. Lacy is the only woman featured on that recording (which included singing legends Ray Charles, Neil Diamond, Merle Haggard, Julio Iglesias, George Jones, Leon Russell, Carlos Santana, Mel Tillis, Hank Williams Sr., and Neil Young), and was awarded a Platinum Record for it. She also received a Gold Record from Hank Williams Jr. in 1985 for her support performances throughout his Five-0 Tour, where she opened for him at a time when it was unusual for a woman to do so. Her career includes accomplishments in music, film and radio. In music, they range from her instantly recognizable charted hit songs to her notable duets recorded with George Jones, Willie Nelson, Bobby Bare, Glen Campbell, Eddie Rabbit, David Allen Coe and many others. Her film debut was in the motion picture Take This Job And Shove It, and her acting has also included live stage and theater performances. Until recently, Lacy J Dalton also hosted a weekly radio show called Mustang Matters. Podcasts of past shows are available to listeners on the internet at www.americamatters.us Following a successful career in country music, Lacy decided to draw on all her musical experiences including country, rock and folk, and cross over into the Americana genre. This blend of musical styles allows her to express herself in a way that demonstrates all the facets of who she is as a singer/songwriter. She became an independent artist and formed her own label called Song Dog Records. Under this label, she has released three albums to date. The first was Wild Horse Crossing in 1999, followed by the Last Wild Place Anthology which went #1 on the World Independent Chart, and a year later went #1 on the American Western Music Chart. Then Allison Eastwood, Clint Eastwood's daughter, used the hit song Slip Away from the Anthology CD on the sound track of her independent film, Don't Tell. In 2010 Lacy also released a tribute to Hank Williams Sr. entitled Here's To Hank. Today, Lacy continues to record new music and perform live shows whenever possible. She tours mainly west of the Mississippi and loves small boutique venues and old theaters with great sound quality and warm, receptive audiences she can really connect with. She recently recorded some electrifying new music for an EP that was released in January 2019. When hearing the signature song Scarecrow, her good friend Reverend Barbara Ann Fletcher remarked “that song makes you a whole new you, and it makes me a whole new me.” And that's exactly the response Lacy was hoping for. In addition to her musical career, Lacy has been involved in various service projects through several charitable organizations – namely, the Let ‘em Run Foundation, William James Associates Arts in Corrections, and Rotary International. In 1999, Lacy co-founded the Let ‘em Run Foundation which received its 501(c)3 designation from the IRS in 2004. The Let 'em Run Foundation is dedicated to rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing America's wild horses and burros who have no voice. Let ‘em Run's mission is to serve as an educational, fund-raising and public relations entity, through its own efforts and in assisting similar non-profit organizations, to promote the appropriate and compassionate management of the wild horse, estray horse, and mustang population of the U.S. and other species of endangered or mistreated animals. From 2015 through November 2018, Lacy and her partner, Dale Poune, worked with the William James Arts in Corrections program at High Desert State Prison in Susanville, California. Their work there has been focused on teaching basic song writing skills and techniques, music theory and guitar playing to level 4 inmates. Through their classes, a select group of inmates got the opportunity to learn the basic principles of guitar playing and song writing which they then used to develop songs and lyrics, both individually and as a group. The class culminated with the inmates recording those musical compositions and giving a live performance to an audience of prison and non-prison personnel. In addition, several inmates were able to go on to teach basic guitar to other inmates in the classic “each one teach one” teaching tradition. Finally, Lacy is an honorary member of the Rotary Club of Reno, and a Paul Harris Fellow. Lacy has written two songs for Rotary, which she then recorded on a CD to be used as a fundraising opportunity for the Reno club. Lacy also performed at the Rotary International Convention in New Orleans in 2011, and has been a key note speaker and headline performer at several club meetings and district conferences.

I'm very fortunate that when I speak with Rotarians, I can deliver a message that really touches their hearts. For today's episode of Superpowers for Good, I had the privilege of speaking with two remarkable leaders: Bill Gates, Chair of the Gates Foundation, and Barry Rassin, former President of Rotary International. We spoke in May 2019. The episode is significant enough to justify sharing anew. Our conversation delved into the collaborative efforts that are bringing us closer to eradicating polio, showcasing a model of partnership that has far-reaching implications for global health. Five years on, the work to eradicate polio continues.Bill shared the profound impact of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), a partnership between the Gates Foundation, Rotary International, UNICEF, WHO, and CDC, initiated in 1988. He emphasized, "Getting rid of a disease is kind of the ultimate goal for all these infectious diseases. It's only happened once before with smallpox... the possibility that no kids will ever be paralyzed again even without having to spend lots and lots of money... appears within sight." His passion for ensuring that no child suffers from polio, especially in developing countries, highlighted the critical role of coordinated global efforts.Barry echoed this sentiment, reflecting on the strength of the partnership with the Gates Foundation. "The beauty of it is that we recognize that when we do things together, we can do so much more. The GPEI partnership... works so well because we were working together," he noted. Barry also emphasized the importance of continuing this collaboration to tackle other global health challenges once polio is eradicated. This episode not only underscored the progress made in the fight against polio but also illustrated the broader potential of such partnerships. As Bill mentioned, "Polio has had to pioneer a lot of things... mapping out where the kids are turned out to be a key tactic." This legacy of innovation and collaboration sets a precedent for addressing other infectious diseases and health crises.Reflecting on the discussion, it is clear that the eradication of polio is within our grasp, thanks to the unwavering dedication of leaders like Bill and Barry. Their vision and collaboration offer hope and a roadmap for tackling other global health challenges, making our world a safer and healthier place for future generations.AI Episode Summary1. Our Special Musical Guest is Country Music Hall of Famer Lacy J. Dalton The Queen of Country Music BIOGRAPHY Lacy J.

Taulbert, noted author and entrepreneur businessman, he could have failed had he not encountered community builders and entrepreneurial thinkers early on in his life. Taulbert was born on the Mississippi Delta during the era of legal segregation where he completed his secondary education. Though opportunities were few and barriers were plentiful, Taulbert managed to dream of being successful, not knowing the shape that success would take. Today Taulbert is the President and CEO of the Freemount Corporation (a human capital development company) serving clients nationally and internationally-Fortune 500 Companies, small businesses, federal agencies, professional organizations, community colleges and K-12 leadership. This new memoir chronicles Taulbert's transformative experience of a supper invitation to a former plantation house in Allendale, South Carolina, where the successful adult confronts his childhood memories and wrestles with the legacies of slavery and segregation that demand to be acknowledged in his present circumstances.Transported back to a setting that looks and feels like the cotton fields and shotgun shacks of his childhood, Taulbert finds himself expected to cross racial barriers that no "colored" man could have broached without dire consequences. "The Invitation" is the story of the man and the little boy inside him wrestling with a past they both know so well, and of stepping into a future that is still being determined.Taulbert has authored thirteen books, several of which are foundational to his consulting philosophy: Eight Habits of the Heart and Who Owns the Ice House-Eight Life Lessons from an Unlikely Entrepreneur [Who Owns the Ice House is part of a Kauffman Foundation sponsored education initiative to expose the impact of the entrepreneurial mindset at all levels] and more recently, Shift Your Thinking: Win Where You Stand and The Invitation-living beyond the lingering lessons of race and place. Taulbert's Eight Habits has become foundational to his work on leveraging community as an asset in the workplace, and garnered him an invitation to address members of the United States Supreme Court as a personal guest of former Supreme Court Justice, Sandra Day O'Connor.Clifton L. It's been a long time coming, but I'm so happy to finally be bringing you a conversation with my dad, Darrel O'Shaughnessy. If you want to get to know someone, often meeting the parents is the best way to do that. Let's just say, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. You can also listen to a chat I had with my mom back in Episode 14.Born in Bancroft, Ontario in 1946, Darrel O'Shaughnessy grew up in the post war era of opportunity, which he didn't take for granted. He has worn many hats, from being a chef, to being an officer with the Ontario Provincial Police. He was the Director of Security at Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. where something like 80% of the worlds isotopes were derived, and later, branched out on his own to share his security expertise as a consultant. My Dad was always a hard working dude, travelling often to seek out new challenges and opportunities to make a better life for our family.Darrel never fully retired. Later in life, he and my mom built a Dragon Boating community in Kelowna, B.C. Later, when they moved back to Arnprior, Ontario, they founded the Arnprior Dragon Boating Club, dedicated to inspiring health and fitness, for all ages through the sport of dragon boat racing. Dad became an active board member with the Senior's Active Living Center in Arnprior, which led to him developing “Men's Sheds”, non profit entities that support senior men by providing a place of camaraderie, purpose and meaning. Members of Men's Sheds are active in the community and work hard on projects such as building toys for fairs and markets, picnic tables and benches for parks and were active in building screens for various public facing services during the Pandemic.Being in service to others has been an extremely meaningful path for my dad and he has been recognized for his efforts. He was recently named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International “in appreciation of tangible and significant assistance given for the furtherance of better understanding and friendly relations among peoples of the world.” Humbly, he accepts this award on behalf of the team of hard working people he surrounds himself with.Dad was always an active guy and considered being active and staying fit very important. He played and coached hockey and was an avid tennis player, classic cross country and downhill skier and, if I'm not mistaken, did pretty well in the Silver Spoon Ski Fest that the Deep River Cross Country Club has been hosting for the last 50 years. I couldn't be more proud of my dad and am so happy to be sharing this conversation with you. Despite it not being cycling centric, this chat still reverberates with the importance of being in service to others, finding meaning and purpose in one's life and the importance of living an active and stimulating life. In this episode Jason and Erica McCurdy discuss:A serial entrepreneur's secretFinding your strength in who you are Builders and accelerators Getting over decision paralysis Key Takeaways: The way forward - towards your dreams - is always by barging through your limiting beliefs. Getting past your internal hindrances can only be done by challenging your doubts on what is actually possible. Something that doesn't involve any hardship or challenges may not be worth doing - but that doesn't mean that doing something that's draining the life out of you daily is worth doing either. It's important to not waste your time pretending to be what you aren't. The things that make you unique are your strengths. In the same way, letting people be them means delegating tasks that they might be better at than you are.Builders are the ones that put the building blocks together and the accelerators try to keep the business going - you need to figure out which one you are. Are you going to be doing the work or leading the work? As a leader, if your schedule is full of tasks, you will have no ability to strategize and assess the future. We drive ourselves crazy with our second-guessing and overanalysis of our decisions - there comes a time where you just gotta do it already. At least, take one step. “If we can get something done, even if it's not done perfectly, we can fix the little things. But we can't fix ‘not doing', so we just have to get something done... Dr. Waded Cruzado has served as the 12th president of Montana State University since 2010. She is well known for her understanding of the Morrill Act, which created the land-grant university system, and she is a passionate champion of the tripartite land-grant mission of education, research and public outreach. MSU has set new student enrollment records under Cruzado's leadership, becoming the fastest growing and largest university in the state, and students routinely win prestigious national awards, including Rhodes, Goldwater, Truman and Udall scholarships. Cruzado is also known for placing student success as the campus's top priority. During Cruzado's tenure MSU's research enterprise has flourished; the university tallied an all-time high for research expenditures in 2019–2020, totaling $167 million, and MSU has competitively won more than $650 million for sponsored research projects. MSU is classified as R1 in the Carnegie Classification for "very high research activity," and is one of only two universities nationally with an R1 classification that is also classified as Very High Undergraduate enrollment. Under Cruzado's leadership the campus has seen numerous major construction and renovation projects. Current projects include the renovation and repurposing of Romney Hall and the construction of a new American Indian Hall. Completed projects include Norm Asbjornson Hall, Jabs Hall, Gaines Hall and the Animal Bioscience Building. Cruzado has also overseen significant improvements to student facilities, including new residence halls, recreation and dining facilities. Philanthropic support has grown for MSU during her tenure. Among other efforts, MSU's comprehensive fundraising campaign raised more than $413 million, and construction is underway on MSU's donor-funded Bobcat Athletic Complex. Cruzado has provided new pathways to higher education with the establishment of Gallatin College MSU, and she obtained approval to designate the Honors Program as the Honors College. MSU also won a grant for the LaunchPad, a program that introduces entrepreneurship as a viable career option and provides university students and alumni with support for entrepreneurial ventures. MSU's national reputation is strong. Notable recognition includes winning the C. Peter Magrath University Community Engagement Award from the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, and the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching awarded MSU its community engagement classification. Cruzado has also enhanced alumni and community relations. One visible community project is the CatWalk, an annual celebration of the relationship between MSU and the community. Cruzado chairs the board of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities and is a commissioner of the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities. She has also served on numerous boards; current board memberships include the American Council on Education, Campus Compact, U.S. Bank and the Burton K. Wheeler Center. Her awards include the “Hero” Award from the National Alliance on Mental Illness – Montana Chapter; the Chief Executive HR Champion Award from the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources; and the Michael P. Malone Educator of the Year from the Montana Ambassadors. She also was recognized as a Paul Harris Fellow by Rotary International and was awarded the Seaman A. Knapp Memorial Lectureship. Cruzado previously served as executive vice president and provost at New Mexico State University. A native of Puerto Rico, she has a son and a daughter and two grandchildren.
In this episode of Nonprofit Architect, Travis talks with Juri Love, author, actor, motivational speaker, and single mother of two. Juri talks about what no nonprofit wants to talk about. Closing a nonprofit. When is it time to close the nonprofit? What is the process like? How do you move on after closing the nonprofit? I hope you enjoy this conversation with Juri Love. Conversation Highlights: {00:30} Introduction of Juni Love {12:10} How to keep your spirits up as you're working through challenges {17:49} When you must shut down a nonprofit. {21:20} Moving on after healing from the trauma of closing a nonprofit {22:50} Can a diverse lifestyle prevent you from being successful in one venture. {25:40} Finding your priorities as a mom {29:38} Working with high school and college students with internships. {38:44} Putting systems in place so the work goes on if you leave. Remarkable quotes: Start with rescues in high crime areas where you can be an intervention for the kids to not go to jail. It's so easy in non-profit work to get bogged down by all the things that need to be done to run the program, let alone delivering the services that you want to do. It's important to set boundaries. When you start a nonprofit, people get very excited; nobody tells you how to stop. There are no good answers and that helped me to become a great journalist. Nipuna Ambanpola is a native of Sri Lanka currently living in the United States. Nipuna is a tech-for-good entrepreneur and strongly believes that technology has the capacity and efficiency to mobilize people to strengthen social impact across the world. In 2017, Nipuna founded IVolunteer International, a 501(c)3 tech-nonprofit in the United States with the vision of creating 7-billion volunteers. IVolunteer International's purpose is to create a culture of global contribution through volunteerism. Understanding the impact of local volunteerism and mobility, Nipuna has devoted his life to creating tech solutions to make volunteering fun, easy, and equitable. Since 2017 under Nipuna's leadership, IVolunteer International has connected 6,000+ volunteers to global causes, exposed 200,000+ people to volunteerism, and forged 16 strategic partnerships across the world in local communities through 4 distinct tech-oriented programs Nipuna believes that every single human being has the power to create impact and envisions a society where volunteerism is a lifestyle and part of the culture. Through #BirthdayDeed (a global pledge campaign), Writers' Council (an activist training program), IVolunteer Series (an online talk-show), and other advocacy campaigns, IVolunteer International has empowered people to connect to their community, find their political voice, unite for a common cause, spotlight local issues, and start movements. Nipuna has spoken about IVolunteer International and the impact of tech-for-good at TEDx Savannah, Points of Lights Conference in Atlanta, Global Goals Summit at the United Nations, University Scholars' Leadership Symposium in Malaysia, and a variety of other change-making venues. Nipuna also serves as a Civil Society Representative at the Youth Steering Committee with the United Nations Department for Global Communications. In his free time, Nipuna loves to read, meet new people, and volunteer. Nipuna volunteers with the United Way and Rotary International and has been recognized for his community work as a Will Watt Fellow, Paul Harris Fellow, and a Rotary Youth-All Star. Discussion Topics What was the impetus behind your founding a new movement for volunteerism and your organization, IVolunteer International? Do you know the origin story of why volunteerism became so normalized within your home country's culture in Sri Lanka? Why do you think many people's involvement in the US is little to non-existent? What is holding people back from serving in their communities? What opportunities have you experienced as a direct result of your volunteerism and how are you leading people towards action in their communities to experience the same outcomes? How do you lead your team to inspire and equip the next generation of volunteers to care deeply about social and environmental impact by giving more of their time, talent, and treasure? Our special guest today grew up in a small town in Southern CA with humble beginnings. After graduating high school, she decided to join the Navy. Her first duty station was NAS Whidbey Island, WA, where she met and then married her husband. As a Veteran herself, she supported, understood, and encouraged her husband's 20-year career. While building her career, they did five deployments; they are thankful that he retired four years ago. She currently works as a Loan officer; throughout her career, she has made her mission to streamline the loan process and ensure a unique and personal experience for every client. She specializes in VA loans, being a veteran herself, and in Construction loans, where she gets to help clients build their dream home. She is a great communicator who is committed to actualizing her clients' goals, no matter how complicated. She started as a bank teller in 2005, served in various roles in banking from audit/compliance to Merchant Services to Asst. Manager, Branch Manager and finally landing as a Mortgage Loan Officer in 2016. She has a passion for financial fitness, and she is so thankful to the many mentors she has had that ultimately developed her career path to where it is today. She has been employed since she was 14, with a workers' permit. She has worked for 21 companies in her life and has never been fired, never given less than a two-week notice, and can check eligible for re-hire with every company. As a Rotarian, she is proud to serve her community when called into action, and she is a Paul Harris Fellow. In 2014 she co-founded a non-profit scholarship program for young women in her community, and in four years of producing the program, they delivered over $42,000 to local high school girls. Sadly, this program ended with her relocation to Oregon, but it is in the highlight reel. Giving back to her community and especially young women, is something that she has always felt called to do. When she is not fulfilling her duties as Mortgage Loan Officer, she enjoys camping with her family, including three rambunctious boys and a malamute named Pepper. She is also an avid runner & baker. Welcome to our featured guest, Jes Walker-Wyse. This is an episode that is surely worth exploring every minute of their discussion. On today’s episode we discuss Michelle Charles’ career path and how she has navigated unexpected developments as the Executive Director of the Canton Symphony. What does an orchestral organization do when faced with events like COVID-19, racial injustice and the me too movement? What is the responsibility of the orchestra and how can the orchestra push to orchestrate change to create a more diverse and inclusive future? Michelle has been President & CEO since 2011. Previously serving in all capacities of the organization as chorus member and volunteer, board trustee and staff, she continues to be a driving force behind the increasing notoriety of the Canton Symphony. Michelle holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music History and Theory from Hiram College, where she graduated summa cum laude. Michelle is currently the Past President of the Rotary Club of Canton and District Governor Nominee Designate for Rotary District 6650 and is a Paul Harris Fellow. She is currently serving on the boards of The Friends of the Summit (91.3 FM) where she serves as Treasurer, and the Leadership Stark County Alumni Board. She was a member of the 27th Class of Leadership Stark County, and is currently a member of Woman’s Impact, Inc. In 2016, she was chosen to be a part of the Sisters of Charity Leadership Forum and is a member of Malone University’s President’s Advisory Council. In 2012, she was honored to be named one of the Twenty Under 40 and in 2018 was inducted to the YWCA of Stark County’s Women’s Hall of Fame. Canton Symphony Orchestra knows the need for change within the orchestral community. The tradition of classical music has ignored many communities that have contributed to the development and canon of repertoire played in the concert hall. While Canton Symphony is a regional orchestral, change starts at the smallest level. With “Orchestrating Change”, the Canton Symphony Orchestra hopes to facilitate conversations that will make the concert hall a more welcoming place for previously ignored communities as well as create more acceptance and diversity on the stage. In addition to orchestrating change internally, educating audiences to issues surrounding diversity and inclusion will be a priority. Music by Black, Latinx, female, Asian, and LGBTQAI+ musicians and composers has been noticeably absent in the programming produced by established institutions in comparison to those who are white and male. Canton Symphony Orchestra hopes to be a more welcoming community that is reflective of the demographics in Canton, Ohio and the surrounding major metropolitan areas. Orchestrating Change is available on all platforms, including Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, and PodBean. Patrons who wish to sign-up for email reminders may do so at www.cantonsymphony.org/orchestrating-change. More information, including additional episodes, will be released in our weekly newsletter and social media accounts.

The Counter Narrative: Changing the Way We Talk (and think) About Education
Welcome to the Counter Narrative Podcast, a show designed to change the way we talk, and think, about education. By sharing stories of successes and triumphs, we aim to challenge the dominant narrative that often negatively portrays our disenfranchised populations. I'm your host, Charles Williams. An educator for 15 years, a current school principal, and an educational consultant. In this episode, I chat with Carly Spina, an educator with 15 years of experience in Multilingual Education, including her service as an EL teacher, a third-grade bilingual classroom teacher, and a district-wide EL/Bilingual/Dual Language Instructional Coach. She is currently serving 8 schools (EC-8) in a linguistically rich community of over 60 languages and over 800 active EL students. Spina has engaged in the successful co-creation of several parent outreach programs, Title I tutoring programs for students in grades 3-5, mentoring programs for middle school students, co-teaching initiatives, and more. She is deeply passionate about equity and advocacy for multilingual learners and fights for access and inclusive opportunities for kids and families. Spina actively fights against food insecurity in the community she serves. She has spoken at various national conferences and events and has received several awards over the years, including the Illinois Education Association Reg Weaver Human & Civil Rights Award in 2015 and the Distinguished Service Award for Excellence in the Team Category for EL Community Engagement in 2019. She was the WIDA Featured Educator in April 2019 and was named a Paul Harris Fellow in July of 2019. Spina is an active member of the EL/Bilingual community on social media and enjoys networking and growing with teachers and leaders across the country. She is currently working on her first book with EduMatch Publishing. During our chat, we talked about the need for us to change the systems in which we operate. She shared her experiences working with parents of linguistically diverse students and the importance of amplifying their voices, not speaking on their behalf. Spina also examined the varied definitions of parental involvement as they shift due to cultural differences. Maybe this is a reflection of perspective and not attitude. We also discussed methods of engaging the community, beyond simply checking off tasks, and instead embedding into our everyday practices. She encourages educators to embrace their statuses as change agents and recognize that there are no small wins. In fact, incremental gains lead to monumental success. Art Wolfe on Planning Ahead & Taking Action, Entrepreneurship, Dissecting Inspiration & Publishing Multiple Books.Art Wolfe (@artwolfe | artwolfe.com) Art Wolfe was born on September 13, 1951 in Seattle, Washington, and still calls the city home. He graduated from the University of Washington with Bachelor's degrees in fine arts and art education in 1975, where he studied under professors such as Jacob Lawrence. His photography career has spanned five decades, a remarkable testament to the durability and demand for his images, his expertise, and his passionate advocacy for the environment and indigenous culture. During that time he has worked on every continent, in hundreds of locations, and on a dazzling array of projects.Wolfe's photographic mission is multi-faceted. By employing artistic and journalistic styles, he documents his subjects and educates the viewer. His unique approach to photography is based on his training in the arts and his love of the environment. His goal has always been to win support for conservation issues by “focusing on what's beautiful on the Earth.” Hailed by William Conway, former president of the Wildlife Conservation Society, as “the most prolific and sensitive recorder of a rapidly vanishing natural world,” Wolfe has created millions of images in his lifetime and travels nearly nine months out of the year photographing for new projects, leading photographic tours and seminars, and giving inspirational presentations to corporate, educational, conservation, and spiritual groups.Long before the genre of ‘conservation photography' was conceived, Wolfe was practicing it. In 1997 he created a conservation-themed photography contest as “an event for the advancement of photography as a unique medium capable of bringing awareness and preservation to our environment through art.” The contest culminated in 2012 in which the International Conservation Photography Awards drew entries from around the world and was exhibited and traveled by The Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture in Seattle. In 1978 he published his first book Indian Baskets of the Northwest Coast with the late Dr. Allan Lobb, a close friend and mentor, who also gave Wolfe a start by putting the young photographer's work into patients' rooms at Swedish Medical Center. Wolfe was soon photographing for the world's top magazines such as National Geographic, Smithsonian, Audubon, GEO, and Terre Sauvage. Magazines all over the world publish his photographs and stories, and his work is licensed for retail products and advertising, as well as products such as USPS stamps, of which he has three.Numerous US and international venues have featured monographs of his work as well his traveling exhibitions, Earth Is My Witness, Travels to the Edge, and Beyond the Lens. He has had four major exhibitions at Seattle's Frye Art Museum, including One World, One Vision. Today his work is available online at www.artwolfe.com and at the Carnevale Gallery inLas Vegas.Since 1988 he has published at least one book a year—1997 alone saw seven titles in the United States and abroad. He has released over 100 books in eight languages, including the popular titles The New Art of Photographing Nature and The Art of the Photograph, Vanishing Act, and award-winning titles Human Canvas, The High Himalaya, Water: Worlds between Heaven & Earth, Tribes, Rainforests of the World, Pacific Northwest – Land of Light and Water, as well as numerous children's titles, including O is for Orca and Animal Action Alphabet. Graphis included his books Light on the Land and the controversial Migrations on its list of the 100 best books published in the 1990s.In 2000 he formed Wildlands Press and subsequently published his signature work: The Living Wild, which has more than 70,000 copies in print worldwide and garnered awards from the National Outdoor Book Awards, Independent Publisher, Applied Arts and Graphis; Africa (2001) and Edge of the EarthCorner of the Sky (2003), both of which captured significant publishing awards, including IPPY (Independent Publishers), Benjamin Franklin (Publishers MarketingAssociation), and National Outdoor Book Award. In 2014 Wolfe began a publishing relationship with Earth Aware Editions. This has resulted in numerous award-winning books including the encyclopedic Earth Is My Witness, also published in German, French, and Italian language editions by National Geographic; an all-new edition of Migrations, and in 2018 the Nautilus Award-winning Trees: Between Earth and Heaven. 2019 will see the publication of Wild Elephants: Conservation in the Age of Extinction and the trade edition of Human Canvas.Wolfe has ventured into the world of television production with On Location with Art Wolfe, Techniques of the Masters and as host of American Photo's Safari, which aired on ESPN 1993-1995. In May 2007 Art made his public television debut with the high definition series Art Wolfe's Travels to the Edge, an intimate and upbeat series that offers unique insights on nature, culture, and the realm of digital photography. The thirteen-episode first season garnered American Public Television's 2007 Programming Excellence Award—unprecedented for a first season show. The thirteen-episode second season garnered five Silver Telly Awards, their highest honor, for outstanding achievement. It has been broadcast hundreds of thousands times in the United States on PBS and CreateTV affiliates and in global syndication, and on Amazon Prime. Wolfe is the on-screen talent for two of the six episodes of Season I of Tales By Light, first airing in 2015 in Australia and New Zealand and now in distribution on Netflix. The show was produced by Canon Australia and National Geographic Channel in conjunction with Untitled Film Works.Education is a major component of Wolfe's work, whether it is about the environment or about photography. He leads photographic tours worldwide as well as regularly giving the groundbreaking Photography as Art seminar. He has been a Phase One Digital Artists Series instructor, and is collaborating with two of the most renowned nature photographers inthe world, Frans Lanting and Thomas Mangelsen, on the Masters of Nature Photography workshops.Wolfe is in demand as a keynote speaker around the world, giving talks. His presentations brim with humor and anecdotes. They deliver both an environmental message and the promise that following dreams with determination will lead to a well-lived life. He illustrates his presentations with inspiring, awarding-winning photography displaying an astonishing array of subjects, from intense wildlife images and landscapes to intimate views of cultures almost untouched by civilization.Along with his numerous book and television awards, Wolfe is the proud recipient of the Nature's Best Photographer of the Year Award, the North American Nature Photography Association's Lifetime Achievement Award and the Photographic Society of America's Progress Medal for his contribution to the advancement of the art and science of photography; he has been awarded with a coveted Alfred Eisenstaedt Magazine Photography Award. The National Audubon Society recognized Wolfe's work in support of the national wildlife refuge system with its first-ever Rachel Carson Award. In 1999 he was named to the UW Alumni Association's magazine list of 100 “most famous, fascinating and influential” alumni of the 20th century. He is the Honorary Chair of Washington Wild, a member of the American Society of Media Photographers; he is an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society, a Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers, a Member National of The Explorers Club, a Paul Harris Fellow of The Rotary Foundation, and has served on the advisory boards for the Wildlife Conservation Society. When Cam Calkoen was born with cerebral palsy, his parents were told that he may never walk again, let alone talk, or live a normal life, But Cam has never let that hold him back. In fact, when someone says something is a ‘possibility’ Cam sees it as an ‘opportunity’ and the only reason for one to miss out is by not being competitive enough. Competition comes in many forms but Cam believes that our biggest competitor is the one looking back at us in the mirror. Cam has gone from doubting his ability to run, to representing New Zealand in athletics, winning championships in New Zealand, Australia and Canada, and now taking his winning attitude into diverse environments that encourage others to achieve their personal best. From projects that enhance relations amongst people of the world through to continually pushing through personal, physical and emotional barriers Cam ensures each day is lived to the max! Cams philosophies, values and dynamic vision has led to him to working in Japan, building a Tuberculosis Ward and School Library in Vanuatu, speaking as far as New York and London and regularly having his leadership recognized in the form of awards and scholarships. In 2006 Cam became one of the youngest recipient’s worldwide to receive a Paul Harris Fellow from Rotary. As a 21 year old this prestigious award (which he has since received twice) recognised the significant contribution he had made in turning a communities dream (the Yes Disability Resource Centre) into reality. As the Ambassador Cam was the figurehead to a NZ$4 million project and learnt what it took to make a dream into reality. During this time he saw the potential in linking his ever-growing network together with young disabled people so they to could develop tools and processes to realise their dreams, from this Cam founded the Carabiner Mentoring program. Through the journey to make it into the top ten in the world for his sport Cam started to see the world as his playground and exited near the peak of his running career. Wanting to leave a much bigger impact on the world he didn’t want to compete in an environment governed by the abilities of his Cerebral Palsy but determined by the abilities of himself as a human being where he could encourage more people into their top ten, the top ten of their business, job, sport or school, the top ten percent of who they can be through striving toward a personal best. Today Cam inspires people with universal backgrounds to dream big, because with big dreams comes a big life. With over ten years experience in fundraising, social entrepreneurship and inspiring the motivation of others Cam has packaged himself into a unique brand for those looking to create a lasting impact. Cam doesn’t hide from the fact that he is still on a journey and his Everest is yet to be conquered. But perhaps it is his uniqueness as a speaker to be sharing an awesome journey in the pursuit of an awesome outcome that sees audiences connect with his message and absorb an energy that inspires them to dream big to achieve more. Some key quotes from our conversation include: I had the best childhood. I wouldn't change anything (6:42) I was aware that I didn't want to be left out ( 7:02) Because I was different, it was MY responsibility, no one else's responsibility to build connection and rapport (7:06) From a very young age, I was a dreamer (7:55) I saw a world, where from a really young age, I wanted to contribute to it in the most awesome way (8:06) Instead of seeing it as an impediment, I saw it as an accent (9:18) If that's how my dictionary sees me, then how does society see me? (11:43) It led to a real low low point in my life (12:11) If you are different in any way, you need to embrace every opportunity that you are to showcase who you are, and what you have to offer this world (15:19) It's recognising that difference really can be a good thing (17:43) Having that ability and strength to dream is really important (18:25) One of the biggest challenges is managing the way that I operate, but at the same time having the confidence that what I have done in the last 34 years has worked pretty well (20:33) Believe in the power of your dreams! (23:53) You've got to keep educating yourself (27:47) Expanding that mindset is one of the most rewarding things you could ever do (32:25) We can look at things from so many different perspectives, and we just need to make one of those perspectives work for us (33:15) You can find more of Cam at: Website: https://www.camcalkoen.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CamCalkoenInspirationalSpeaker/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/camcalkoen __________________________ You can find more of Kirsty at: Website: http://kirstysalisbury.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/kirstysalisb... If you ask someone crippled by polio about the legacy of polio, you would likely hear about the life-altering implications of the horrid disease. When you ask the partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative–Rotary International, the Centers for Disease Control, the World Health Organization, and UNICEF with support from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation–you will get another answer altogether. Polio’s real legacy, they say, is in the infrastructure established to eradicate the disease, which can be used to battle all infectious diseases. Add to that, the clear implication that mankind can radically shape the environment in which we live for the better within time scales that individuals–not just humanity–can appreciate and you begin to see a different picture. On March 31, 2014 at noon Eastern, John Hewko, the General Secretary of Rotary International–the senior-most paid executive in the organization–will join me to discuss the end game strategy for completing the eradication of polio and the legacy the effort leaves behind. Hewko’s bio: John Hewko is the general secretary of Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation. From 2004 to 2009, Hewko was vice president for operations and compact development for the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a U.S. government agency established in 2004 to deliver foreign assistance to the world’s poorest countries. At MCC, he was the principal United States negotiator for foreign assistance agreements to 26 countries in Africa, Asia, South America, the Middle East, and the former Soviet Union. During his tenure, he completed the negotiation of assistance agreements totaling $6.3 billion to 18 countries for infrastructure, agriculture, water and sanitation, health, and education projects. Prior to joining MCC, Hewko was an international partner with the law firm Baker & McKenzie, specializing in international corporate transactions in emerging markets. He helped establish the firm’s Moscow office and was the managing partner of its offices in Kyiv and Prague. While working in Ukraine in the early 1990s, Hewko assisted the working group that prepared the initial draft of the new Ukrainian post-Soviet constitution and was a charter member of the first Rotary club in Kyiv. Hewko has been a public policy scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, an adjunct professor of law at Georgetown University, and a visiting scholar at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. He has published papers and articles in leading U.S. and international publications, and he has spoken extensively on political and business issues dealing with the former Soviet Union, Central Europe, Africa, and Latin America. He is also a member of the Council of Foreign Relations. Hewko holds a law degree from Harvard University, a master’s in modern history from Oxford University (where he studied as a Marshall Scholar), and a bachelor’s in government and Soviet studies from Hamilton College in New York. As general secretary, Hewko leads a diverse staff of 800 at Rotary International’s World Headquarters in Evanston, Illinois, USA, and seven international offices. Hewko is a Paul Harris Fellow. He and his wife, Margarita, live in Evanston. This interview is part of a series that will examine what can be accomplished in the fight to solve the world’s biggest challenges within the next thirty years. The solution to every big problem also presents opportunities entrepreneurs will exploit to change the world. From this series of interviews, a book, working title: Thirty Years to Peace, will emerge.
