Host's note - if you prefer to watch this interview, check out the YouTube video. This episode features our guest, Eric Christiansen, a documentarian and filmmaker, who is a trauma survivor having lost his home in the Painted Cave fire disaster in Santa Barbara.  He shares with us about the resilience of the human spirit and helps others share their stories through film.  TOPICS COVERED:- His journey starting with a calling and dream to be a filmmaker from age 8, to becoming a professional in the business as a teen, to when everything changed when he lost his home in a wildfire that ended one era and started a whole new one for him, through his battle with drugs and alcohol, to finally finding the answer to his early calling by becoming a documentarian to help himself and others share their stories of trauma- How he finds healing on both sides of the camera- When he noticed that everyone's stories had the same arc - from war veterans to sexual abuse to childhood trauma - How healing trauma is a process and how you can get stuck in some areas of it - Unmasking Hope (his new film) - tells the story of many different types of trauma through a diverse lens- Why wearing masks helps survivors function through day to day living, but what happens when the mask overcomes who we are- The common thru-line of each survivor is when they find other people with similar stories and they realized they aren't alone- Why healing skyrockets when you start helping others through trauma - You cannot quantify your trauma and why it's important to validate everyone's experience so we can honor it- How he is able to not be burdened by others' vulnerability- Violence: are we numbing ourselves to it?   Violence doesn't create a disconnect; it is the connect - the more we desensitize to it in entertainment- "Hope doesn't come out of good times" - Isolation is a killer - find your people/tribeGUESTS MOST HELPFUL RECOVERY RESOURCES IN THEIR JOURNEY: 1. Welcome everyone, to another exciting episode of Warriors Unmasked. This is episode 112, and we have a guest who is no less than a living inspiration. The man of the hour is Mr. Eric Christiansen - an acclaimed documentarian, a recipient of the prestigious Southwestern Region Emmy Award seven times, an ambassador for Given Hour, and a champion for mental health. Today, we're pulling back the curtain on Eric's life story. Strap in as we travel from a traumatizing event he experienced more than three decades ago, through a difficult period of substance abuse, and towards the transformative power of assistance and rehabilitation. The crux of our conversation today is about the resilience and fortitude that springs from times of despair. About 30 years ago, Eric was an editor for music videos and commercials when his life took an unfortunate turn. On June 27th, 1990, the Painted Cave Fire Disaster consumed his house and everything in it, including his Super 8 films, marking the end of an era. Little did he know that this was also the prologue to a new, unexpected journey. In the wake of the fire disaster, Eric found solace in substance abuse to numb his pain and loss. However, life had a twist in store. This was his initial stride towards healing from trauma, managing grief, and narrating stories of hope. Eric's journey was far from easy, but it equipped him with invaluable insights and experiences that he now uses to help others on similar journeys. His story is a testament to the human capability to rise from the ashes and discover a renewed sense of hope. According to Eric, feeling lost is a common sentiment among trauma survivors, as if one's life story is abruptly interrupted. This leaves one in shock, often grappling with confusion. But the emphasis of our conversation is that it's perfectly alright not to have all the answers. The process of seeking help, reaching out, and enduring the struggle is often the first step towards recovery and reclaiming hope. Eric's inspiring journey, his lessons learned, and his thoughts on resilience and hope in Episode 112 of Warriors Unmasked. Remember, no matter the odds, hope is always within reach. Episode: 2022.8.49 The Living Full Out show with Nancy Solari encourages you to seek out ways to pay it forward in life. As we go through our high and low moments, it can be hard pushing ourselves to give it away when we don't feel our best. Remember that we're stronger when we work as a team, it's okay to accept a friend's kindness while striving to aid others. Our first caller Donna wonders how to adjust to a changing work environment when feeling frustrated. Nancy advised her to use her voice and share her opinions with members of leadership. When there are transitions within the office, your coworkers may be experiencing the same mix of emotions. It can be intimidating to express our concerns and feedback with those in a higher position but taking the initiative to speak out can create the change we're looking for in life. Our inspirational guest Eric Christiansen vowed to give it away by lending a helping hand and supporting others through their struggles. He was raised by his grandmother while his mother battled breast cancer and his father was focusing on his career. Although surrounded by love, it was around the young age of ten that Eric found himself escaping from the world through alcohol and drugs. Despite his means of avoiding hurdles in life, he had always been a creative child and although he was accepted into his father's alma mater, USC, he followed his heart and attended the California Institute of Art for Film. It turned out that living with his mother while attending college would be crucial to change his path in life. While in California he endured a tragic 2-day fire where he lost all his possessions and fell deeper into his alcohol addiction. With a nudge from his significant other to visit an outpatient center, he found a community of people who gave their time to assist him with getting back on his feet. Starting his journey to sobriety and reconnecting with his faith, allowed him to uncover his purpose in life. Tune in to hear how Eric is utilizing his experience and love for film to lead others as they heal from trauma.Perhaps you feel stuck in your current situation and searching for a way to change your course in life. Try shifting your attention away from where you are to where you want to be. When we use the knowledge, we've gained in life by giving it away to others, we propel ourselves closer to living full out.

Leveraged as educational tools by top mental health institutions, Christiansen's films migrate from the entertainment arena into environments that help additional audiences navigate the profound collateral damage trauma creates not only on the individual, but the family and community as well. The New York Times called his last film, "strikingly photographed" and "...sure to give comfort and support to countless veterans and their families." By spotlighting these survivors and their journeys, Christiansen has been able to help unify a variety of audiences around the power of HOPE, and educate the general population about the complexities of trauma. Christiansen has also produced for major networks including Discovery, TLC, PBS, MTV and an Imax film.

Eric Christiansen is on a mission as a filmmaker-documentarian. After losing his home to the 1990 Santa Barbara Painted Cave Fire (one of California's most destructive man-made disasters on record) he devoted his talent, time, resources and energy to creating stunning, powerful accounts of survivors who have had a front-row seat to suffering. His subjects are trauma survivors: those who endured 911, first responders, military veterans, witnesses to mass shootings and others. He explains a basic conflict among his subjects: to keep or discard the mask they wear to conceal the depth of their emotional, physical and spiritual pain from the wider world. His films sensitively show life behind the mask and the healing power of moving from seclusion to inclusion by the retelling of their experiences.

Today's guest has dominated the West Vancouver market for a long time. For the 17th consecutive year, Eric Christiansen has sold more West Vancouver homes than any other Realtor. No matter if your work in real estate or are looking to buy or sell, Eric is a fantastic resource! Here's a sneak peek of the episode. [0:52] How Eric Christiansen got started in the industry. How Eric, at a young age, wanted to become a basketball player but, through his father-in-law's help to become a realtor. [2:15] Why do you love your job? Eric Christiansen loves to meet many people and helping them make the most important financial decisions of their lives. How people trust him and how he builds real friendships with his clients. [4:25] If you weren't a realtor, what do you think you'd be doing now? Eric was groomed from a young age to become a car dealer. He loves cars and has a passion for it. [5:43] Amidst the COVID-19 outbreak, what would you advise people who are in the market, buyer or seller, should be looking at right now? Eric has no clue on what will happen to the market due to the pandemic. He always highly suggests getting the best realtor possible in the area of interest and doing your research first hand. [8:39] What is the best property you have ever sold to a client? There are too many to mention, but the more challenging the deal, the more memorable it was for him. [9:43] What do you think "House Rich" means to you? Two things. 1.) It is when people get a mortgage that is not out of their league financially. 2.) People who think their equity is significant and then buy expensive things, then the market drops. Never overextend. Live within your means. [12:37] How can people reach out to you? If people are not comfortable with calling, they can go to his website. People can reach him through his contact details. He is willing to reach out and help other newbie realtors.  604.312.9999 (about:blank)  is the number. [14:31] Closing remarks. Subscribe & Review in iTunes  Are you subscribed to my podcast? Emmy-award-winner Eric Christiansen rose from addiction and losing his home in a wildfire through the act of making documentaries about other people's trauma path.THE HAPPY BRAIN PODCAST is a frank conversation between Loretta Breuning and a real reader of her book, Habits of a Happy Brain: Retrain your brain to boost your serotonin, dopamine, oxytocin and endorphin levels. Read the book and send your questions to Dr. Breuning on the contact form at the Inner Mammal Institute at: InnerMammalInstitute.org. You may be a guest on the show yourself! The brain chemicals that make us feel good are inherited from earlier mammals. They evolved to do a job, not to make you feel good all the time. When you know the job each chemical does in the state of nature, your ups and downs make sense. More important, you can re-wire yourself to enjoy more of them in sustainable ways. It's not easy, alas. Our brain is designed to release happy chemicals when you take steps that promote survival. But our brain defines survival in a quirky way: it cares about the survival of your genes and it relies on neural pathways built in youth. To make things even harder, our brain habituates to the rewards it has so you always have to do more to get more happy chemicals. We are not born with survival skills like our animal ancestors. Each newborn human wires itself from its own early experience. Happy chemicals are like paving on your neural pathways, wiring you to repeat behaviors that made you feel good before. This is why our urgent motivations don't make sense to our verbal brain. It's not easy being mammal! When you know how your brain works, you can find healthier ways to enjoy happy chemicals and relieve unhappy chemicals. You can build new neural pathways by feeding your brain new experiences. But you have to design the new experiences carefully and repeat them— a lot!The Inner Mammal Institute has free resources to help you make peace with your inner mammal: videos, blogs, infographics, and podcasts. Dr. Breuning's manyt books illuminate the big picture and help you plot your course. You can feel good in new ways, no matter where you are right now. On June 27th, 1990, Eric Christiansen’s life was changed in an instant when he lost everything he owned in the Santa Barbara Painted Cave fire. Flames engulfed his house, taking all his possessions, and starting him on a new path entirely. From this disaster, he understands trauma, the resilience of the human spirit, and how important HOPE is to heal. At first Eric turned to drugs and alcohol, but soon realised that despite loosing all his earthly possessions he had actually gained everything, and started to put his focus into his film making.Today, Eric is a seven-time Emmy Award recipient, with four films that focus on the impact of trauma on individuals, families and communities. His new film UnMASKing HOPE follows a disparate group of people whose extraordinary stories of survival most of us have heard only in snippets on the news. Having lived through mass shootings, terror attacks, combat and sexual assaults, these brave trauma survivors don “masks” to hide their pain and suffering as they navigate their new existence that is often stymied by PTSD, physical injury and emotional turmoil. In order to heal, they must confront what’s happened to them and begin their journey from seclusion to inclusion. It's been 29 years to this day that Director, Producer, Editor and Filmmaker Eric Christiansen survived the 1990 Painted Cave Fire in Santa Barbara, California. The fire destroyed over 400 homes, including Eric's, and burned over 5,000 acres, devastating many lives.  Eric talks about how he turned to alcohol and drugs to cope with the aftermath initially. But then he later realized that there was a bigger picture to just his own personal trauma.   Since then, he's been creating movies with messages of resilience and inspiration. Although he's won multiple awards for his films, he prefers to call himself a "messenger" because he says surviving that fire has taught him that his purpose now is to not just connect with survivors and relay their stories but to show that there's hope. The release of this episode coincides not only with the 29th anniversary of The Painted Cave Fire in Santa Barbara but also with National PTSD Awareness Day.  This episode--and really all episodes on The Inspire Cafe podcast--are dedicated to spreading awareness about PTSD and mental health.
