This month's episode of Public Safety Thursday with Captain Warren Gosnell from the Frederick County Sheriff's Office featured an in-depth conversation about their K9 Unit. Captain Gosnell shared with host Janet Michael about the vital role these specialized officers and their canine partners play in public safety. He addresses the complex responsibilities and essential duties performed by the K9 unit. The discussion centered around the nuanced roles these canines play—from tracking and trailing to detecting illegal substances. Captain Gosnell elaborated on the types of dogs in the unit, mentioning Enzo the Dutch Shepherd, Milo the German Shepherd, and Blue the Bloodhound, among others. He emphasized the specialized training these dogs undergo and the ongoing commitment required from their handlers. For instance, Captain Gosnell shared an experience from a recent training exercise where a dog tracked a hidden handler across different terrains—grass, pavement, and more—demonstrating their impressive olfactory abilities. Training sessions are rigorous and continuous to ensure the dogs remain at the top of their game, especially when tasked with real-world emergencies. Janet and Goz joshed about the intricacies of their own pet care routines, drawing a parallel to the intense training and responsibility shouldered by K9 handlers. The hosts also discussed the emotional bonds that form between the handlers and their dogs, making it understandable why most handlers choose to adopt their partners upon the dogs' retirement. Captain Gosnell explained the master deputy ranking system and how these specially-trained deputies have accumulated years of experience and mastery in their field. Five of the six deputies in the unit have earned this prestigious title, highlighting their dedication and expertise. As the show wrapped up, Janet and Goz encouraged listeners to consider adopting or rescuing pets. Captain Gosnell lifted the mood by acknowledging the various officers and their respective canine partners, offering a heartfelt salute to their invaluable service to the community. The broadcast was a fascinating peek into the world of K9 units, their training, and the unyielding commitment of both the officers and their dogs to public safety. If you weren't already a fan of these four-legged heroes, today's enlightening discussion surely gave you paws for thought.
The latest episode of the Cape Copcast welcomes Property Crimes Unit Detective Jenna Newton, who takes listeners on an eye-opening journey from the high-crime streets of Las Vegas to the canals of Cape Coral. Her story shows the contrasts between policing environments—trading two robberies per night and constant gang surveillance for unlocked garage doors and watchful neighbors.Detective Newton's path wasn't always aimed at investigations. She originally aspired to work in the K9 Unit, but discovered a passion for digging deeper into cases. Now as a property crimes detective, she tackles vehicle burglaries and construction site thefts while educating the community about crime prevention. Her insider perspective on why criminals target Cape Coral—precisely because residents feel safe enough to leave doors unlocked—offers valuable insight for people looking to protect their property.Beyond her detective work, Newton shares what makes the Cape Coral Police Department unique. From her service with the Honor Guard to her famous "joke of the day" that lightens the mood before shifts, you'll get a dose of humanity behind the badge. Her appreciation for Cape Coral's supportive community—where citizens regularly thank officers rather than antagonize them—highlights why she plans to retire in the same city where she serves.Whether you're curious about law enforcement careers, crime prevention, or simply want to understand your local police department better, Detective Newton's candid conversation offers something for everyone. Her message to residents: don't hesitate to report suspicious activity. As she puts it, "It's better to call and have it be nothing than to wish you had called later."

WAPT did a story last night about Rankin County Sheriff K9 officer Tony Shack and his partner VOODOO accusing them of violating a black man's civil rights during a traffic stop, allowing the man to blatantly lie on camera about what happened during the stop. I expose them by telling you what I believe actually happened and this turns into an entire conversation about how to avoid getting arrested or killed during a traffic stop.

Earlier this year, we described Los Angeles act 1morning as one of the funkiest young producers in modern-day techno. And we stand by it. The fast-rising upstart is building a solid fan base around North America and beyond with a rugged, vintage style of swung techno and hardgroove. His all-vinyl DJ sets and pumping productions on the likes of Fixed Rhythms and Mála Ádh stand out for their distinctly old-school flavour—steamrolling hi-hats à la Robert Hood, swift choppage behind the decks and deep, deep grooves. Like many of his all-vinyl heroes, he's also a treat to watch behind the decks The up-and-comer had a hell of a year in 2023, from playing in Japan to going on his first European tour, and his momentum shows no signs of slowing. He debuted at New York's dweller festival this year and K9 Unit, his duo with Bloodhound, recently did a night with fellow hardgroove king Regal86. It's only a matter of time until 1morning gets to a festival or a club near you so until then, enjoy his RA Podcast for now. The mix unfortunately came with some less than stellar circumstances, as the records 1morning pulled were stolen from his car, and so instead this RA Podcast became a statement of resilience and creativity—and, in his words, "an outlet for my rage." @1morning Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/932

The world of canine policing is a fascinating landscape filled with unique partnerships and intriguing challenges. This detailed exploration of police dogs and their handlers provides a rich insight into a side of law enforcement that often goes unnoticed. Canine policing involves a special bond between a canine officer and their four-legged ally. Corporal Wes Ducheney from the Pinellas Park Police Department shares his journey, shedding light on the intense tryout process, challenges, and victories that come with being part of such a special unit. The relationship between a handler and their dog goes way beyond mere companionship – they're true partners and sometimes the only line of defense. Police dogs undergo intense training to prepare them for the rigors of law enforcement. Their handlers play a crucial role in this process, helping them navigate every imaginable scenario or situations imaginable.Handlers not only need to teach their dogs how to do their jogs, they also have to teach them how to switch from work to regular dog mode, ensuring they can respond to different situations appropriately. In the end, what stands out most in the world of canine policing is the unique bond between these dogs and their handlers. This bond goes beyond a working relationship; it forms the foundation for their effectiveness in capturing criminals and serving their communities. This bond also contributes significantly to the social interactions between the unit and the community, often serving as a bridge to foster better relationships and mutual understanding. Police dogs are an integral part of law enforcement, playing a critical role in maintaining law and order. Through their dedication, loyalty, and extraordinary abilities, they make a significant contribution to our communities. The world of canine policing is a testament to the incredible partnership between man and his best friend, a partnership that safeguards our society.See photos of the Pinellas Park Police Department K9 unit in the show notes: https://www.urbandogstudio.com/lets-bark-about-it-tampa-bay/6fk4fq6huybufpvqwfhvcfghl84z5tHave you ever thought about capturing professional portraits of your furry family member? The Colorado Switchblade recently learned that the retired Estes Park K9 Unit Diego was involved in an attack on a person in his handler's residence. The incident occurred on August 3rd at approximately 9:28 PM. Medical care was required however, the extent of the injuries to the handler is still unconfirmed. After submitting a Colorado Open Records Request and reaching out to the public information officers for the Town of Estes Park, Greeley Police Department, and the Larimer County Sheriff's Office, confirmation and statements were given to the Colorado Switchblade. According to Estes Park Police (EPPD) Interm Chief Corey Pass: "On 080322 at 9:28 pm EPPD officers were dispatched to a home in Estes Park where a woman was screaming for help. Upon arrival, officers learned the woman had been attacked by a dog. Officers assisted medical personnel in helping the victim, who was transported to Estes Park Health. Due to the fact that the address and dog belonged to a former EPPD officer, it was decided to request the Larimer County Sheriff's Office conduct the investigation. "Our thoughts are with the victim and the family. We are doing everything we can to support them and, at the same time, respect their privacy in this difficult and private matter. We greatly appreciate the Larimer County Sheriff's Office for its support in assuming responsibility for investigating this case."Also included in the statement was a brief history of the K9 Unit's tenure with the EPPD:"When our trained K9 handler alerted us he was leaving Estes Park for another agency, EPPD conferred with experts in K9 programs at other agencies across the state. These experts supported our goal of transferring Diego to a new agency since we do not have another K9 handler or potential handler among our officers. Diego left service with EPPD and was briefly owned by Greeley PD, but he was retired by Greeley PD after a difficult transition. Greeley PD elected to retire Diego to his original handler as a pet. According to the Greeley PD Public Information Officer, Kent Keller:“I talked to my K9 guys and was told that we had K9 Diego for one day. The handler that we tried and the dog did not have a bond, which is not uncommon in the K9 handler world, I'm told, so we gave him back and began searching elsewhere for a better match.”He added in a second email about documentation on Diego's transfer to Greeley PD and back: “While dogs changing agencies/handlers isn't an everyday thing, it's not uncommon by any means either as handlers retire or leave the department before the dog is ready to. But it was likely just us calling back EPPD and saying, The dog and handler aren't bonding; we're gonna pass on him, thanks.” It's not a big official thing or anything. Kind of related, the bonding is a big portion of K9 handling. Our handlers meet and handle multiple dogs in the selection process to find a dog that fits the handler well and vice versa.”The Colorado Switchblade also asked the following questions of the Town of Estes Park's PIO: Can you tell me what K-9 standards the town used? Our policy states: Canine teams will be trained using proven techniques and methodologies established through the standards set forth by the Colorado and Utah Peace Officer Standards and Training Service Dog Program or an established comparable program at the discretion of the Chief or their designee for narcotics-detector dogs and patrol dogs. The standards that both the K9 and handler were certified under are the Utah POST PSP-1.What part of the town's website would I be able to find the public records/documentation that was necessary for the creation of the K-9 unit, and do you know what the costs were in total for the program?Permission for the program came from the Chief of Police and the Town Administrator in Fall 2018. Funds were raised through donations from the community and outside sources. The total collected was $92,000, which was spent solely on K9 needs, including the K9 vehicle and training of both the dog and the handler. The K9 program was presented to EPPD staff on Nov. 18, 2018. The first donation was received on March 18, 2019. Diego was selected and purchased on September 12, 2019. The handler and K9 graduated from training, and Diego was sworn in on March 10, 2020. Also, do you know what the status of Diego is now? Has he been euthanized? Please check with the Sheriff's Office to see if they can help. We want to honor our partner agency's role, and it's not our information to share. Any word on the condition of the Handler? Was it the original K-9 officer? Because I thought he had to leave town. Please check with the Larimer County Sheriff to see if this is information they have. We want to honor our partner agency's role, and it's not our information to share. Was there a particular company or agency that the town used to acquire Diego? If so, which was it?A team of 2 experts from Loveland PD, 1 K9 veterinarian, the EPPD handler, and EPPD Sergeant all researched several kennels, and ultimately, all parties flew down to Florida, where they found Diego. Several dogs at different kennels were considered and put through a variety of tests and medical exams before a dog was selected. Diego was obtained on September 19, 2019, from a kennel known as Police Service Dogs in Oxnard, Florida. How long was the active tenure of Diego with the Estes Park Police Department?Diego was sworn in with EPPD on 03/10/20 until 07/13/22You can find more information on the Town of Estes Park's now stopped K9 Unit on their webpage here. This story is still ongoing and will be updated as more information becomes available. One of the most popular units at the Police Department is the K9 Unit. These officers are partnered with dogs (or what we call K9's) to work with them each day to help detain bad guys, drugs or guns. What some might not know is they also do something called Friendly Tracks to help locate missing children or other people in the community. These dogs provide great protection to the community, our officers and so many more. K9 Officer Vern Darlington sits down with Waco PD on the BEAT hosts to talk about how these K9's are doing a job well done.
