Welcome to another insightful episode of Down 'n Dirty with Michael Julian. Today, we sit down with our guest Josh Tempco. Josh's life is a tapestry of diverse experiences, rooted in the Midwest and extending to the extreme reaches of the Arctic. Born just on the Indiana side of the Illinois-Indiana border, Josh's early life was grounded in the heartland of America. However, his adventures would take him far beyond familiar territories. One of the most nerve-wracking episodes of Josh's life unfolded in Barrow, Alaska, the northernmost point of the United States. He was there on a mission that required him to travel to Anchorage, but before he could secure his flight, he needed to pass a background check. The checkpoint seemed routine until they questioned where his birth certificate was issued. Josh confidently answered Indiana, only to be told that was incorrect. In that moment, doubt and anxiety set in as he realized the gravity of his mistake. Stuck in one of the most remote parts of the country, he was sweating bullets, aware that his immediate future hinged on this single piece of information. The officials, seeing his distress, granted him one final opportunity to rectify his answer and validate his identity. This experience underscored how critical details from one's past can significantly impact one's present and future. Josh's story is not just about a moment of panic at a checkpoint; it's about the journey from his birth in Indiana to an unexpectedly high-stakes scenario in the Alaskan Arctic. It reflects both his roots and his adventurous spirit, capturing a life characterized by unique challenges and the resilience to overcome them.Follow Josh Tempco on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/joshua-tempco-mba-4900b290/Special thanks to this episodes sponsor, A.L.I.V.E. The prevalence of active shooter situations in the workplace has seen a disconcerting increase in recent years. These distressing incidents, once considered improbable within work environments, have sadly become an alarming reality. News reports continue to remind us that no workplace or industry is immune to such acts of violence. And this sobering trend has prompted companies of all sizes to prioritize employee safety by implementing comprehensive training programs aimed at equipping individuals with the skills and knowledge needed to navigate and survive active shooter events. But while traditional survival training methods, including the widely-known run, hide, fight strategy advocated by the FBI, have been widely disseminated, they may not provide the most effective approach to ensure survival in active shooter situations. These methods, while offering some guidance, often oversimplify the complexities and realities of high-stress scenarios. So to better prepare employees, a more comprehensive, adaptable, and practical training approach is essential to address the nuanced challenges presented by active shooter incidents. So what's the answer? On the show today is Michael Julian, creator of the A.L.I.V.E. Active Shooter Survival Training Program and President of MPS Security & Protection. Podcast begins with a general discussion about the recent submarine disaster, Bill Paxton stops by to say hello. When Jennifer and I first met, it was doing a session with my old friend Bill, who introduced himself by putting her in the submarine he took to visit the Titanic. She didn't know who she was at first, nor why he was showing her the ship. He talks generally about how things went awry, and cites his pal James Cameron.  Then Charles Grodin stops by to talk about his godson RJ and his recent graduation, as well as a prediction that he will become a music composer.  Jennifer could not have known that we were talking about exactly that topic this past week. Then I had a question about a podcast I did with Simon Bown - it will air on July 10th, where we have a conversation with Jesus. At some point this topic of a Roman soldier who "looked like Jesus" and "took his place" came up - interesting to hear this twist on that twist, as Archangel Michael does the talking. As Jennifer notes, she has no motive to make this up - she's reporting, but in essence, he gives another spin on the story which is recounted in "The Greatest Story Never Told as Told by Jesus and Those who Knew him."  According to Michael - the story is 98% accurate. So there's two percent to continue to learn. Eventually we get to a conversation about Julian Sands and the recent discovery of what appears to be his remains.  As noted, we spoke to him not long after he disappeared, and he pointed out again that he still exists, and is sending messages of love to his wife and children. It's sad to think he's gone, but good to hear he's enjoying the flipside. I met him briefly through Jan Sharp and Phillip Noyce, we had lunch to continue some of our deep conversation and stayed in touch over the years, not as much as I wish we could have. But either way, good to hear that he's been found and people can go about having some closure. "Don't be afraid to climb" he says. Good advice for everyone.

Active shooter incidents have become a reality of American culture that is relevant to all of us and is not going away anytime soon. According to the, “Gun Violence Archive” a total of 340 mass shooting incidents took place in 2018 which was just slightly less than the 346 mass shootings we saw in 2017. Beyond that a gun is not the only type of human threat that the evil people among us are using to kill the innocent. Vehicle, knife and arson attacks are also becoming more and more frequent here at home. Anytime, anyplace and anywhere you could find yourself in an active human threat situation. Do you know what to do in order to increase your chances of survival? Do family members know how to survive? Is “run, hide, fight” enough and do you know when or how to do what? Do you have a plan or strategy that will work regardless of your environment? Michael Julian Business ethics will ultimately dictate the success of an individual or a company in any industry in my opinion. Over the years in the military and during my time in the private security profession, I’ve seen people rise and fall based on their business ethics. This law and principal seem to run parallel in every aspect of business, profession and life because both business, professionalism and many different types of success really all depend on relationships. Something that is true and that many people do not consider is simply that relationships are the result of many different common value systems and the aligning of motivations and goals but ultimately the outcome of relationships usually ends up being dictated by the character of the people in the relationship. Business ethics is something that should be heavily studied, considered and understood because just like your character, your business ethics will ultimately decide where you end up at the end of the day. There is no hiding from the inevitability of reparations, results and manifestations in your life that will come about as a result of your character and the professional relationships you are able to keep, maintain and benefit from will be a direct result of the quality of your business ethics. Michael Julian has done many things in the industry but most importantly he has been in the industry successfully operating for a number of years and one of his companies has been up and running for over five decades now. As a professional who investigates workplace crimes on a regular basis and as a successful businessman in our industry, he had some very valuable things to say on the above-mentioned topic. At Risk Youth – Who are they really? William’s Story Join me, David Magee, Michael Julian, and Katy Bray for an open and honest round table discussion connected in 3 parts of the country and a variety of perspectives. This topic about the dangers of substance abuse is SO big it was difficult for me personally to start facilitating the conversation. I awkwardly just looked up at this mountain and took the first shaky step and the rest of the conversation just flowed with these brave, candid and beautiful individuals. This episode is intended to brainstorm by sharing personal issues and stories. I want to be very clear; this is NOT a platform for blame, shame or finger pointing. This is intended to be a safe place to share openly in order to problem solve. When I stumbled across a newspaper article spreading through my social media circles written by a fellow college classmate, it felt like a force had taken ahold of me and shook me to my core. I knew this force would not let me go until I contacted the author, David Magee, to ask if we could discuss his deeply personal story that was also so universal and so multi-faceted. It only took reading the first few lines of the article to make me feel like I could not breathe. His article was intended to warn university students of the dangers of binge and risky behavior and to let them know it does not have to be a right of passage when you enter college. He and his family made the brave decision to share their son’s story of an accidental fatal overdose in hopes it would resonate and help others. What he did with this story/article was bust down the door of shame and free everyone that was locked behind it to share their own stories and to discuss topics normally considered taboo or “dirty laundry”. Free people to breathe….I am not alone…free people to make their OWN decisions…free people of peer pressure….free students to care about and help their peers…free us all to dump all of our, now uncorded, shame, crap and dirty laundry out in the open. We are all now free to discuss and sort through all this old uncomfortable stuff together and finally use it to problem solve. Free to come together as a community to create some solutions to foster healing and brainstorm about prevention. William Magee was a 2012 Ole Miss graduate who was in the Sally McDonnell Barksdale Honors College and the Croft Institute for International Studies. William was remembered by everyone as the young man with the beautiful smile; kind, sweet, and popular – he seemed to have it all. He lettered in track and was named to the SEC academic honor roll. The 400 hurdles are considered by many to be one of the most difficult in sports, and William had the courage to walk on and do it in the SEC. If only we could see the dangers and unpredictability of life’s hurdles. If only we could see the suffering hidden behind his beautiful smile, the social anxiety, general anxiety and low self-esteem. William's story is the same story as when we were at Ole Miss in the 80's. It makes me wonder and almost have a survivor's guilt - why am I still alive - how come I got to live.... ? This story is still, as if not more, relevant as it was when I was in school - I have to say though I was seriously shocked and saddened. I felt like this was something I HAD to explore because for some strange reason the universe let me live. Unfortunately, Williams story is sadly becoming a common story. Young men in particular still seem uncomfortable discussing anxiety, depression and dark feelings and the opioid crisis has become a full-blown epidemic. Last year 115 Americans died every day from an accidental overdose and the rate of these deaths has risen 522% since 2002. At this point I don’t know anyone that has not been affected by this personally. “For Ole Miss freshmen: My son William’s story” By David Magee “A new freshman class started at Ole Miss this week and I wish I could tell them all this story. It’s about my oldest son, William, who was a freshman in 2008. He would gladly tell them himself, if only he were alive.” https://www.oxfordeagle.com/2016/08/28/my-son-williams-story-shared-to-help-others/ I was honored and humbled that William's family would let me interview David, William’s father, for my Podcast Grey Matters Now - let's change the world one difficult conversation at a time please! The hope and manifestation of positive change in just one year! Below – The William Magee Center For Wellness Education at Ole Miss.
