The way we understand equity in our schools is constantly evolving. Students and staff in our communities reflect a broader and richer spectrum of identity, heritage, and self-discovery at this moment than at any other moment in American history. Yet educational practice is still catching up, and the students most likely to be heavily impacted by trauma, such as the spectrum of recent events, are students of color, students with disabilities, and learners from other marginalized communities. How can a deeper understanding of the struggle for true equity in education inform the way we design schools and learning opportunities in the future? And what opportunities would exist for our school communities if we learned how to design education to be truly inclusive of all voices and perspectives from the very beginning?As educators and school leaders hone their methods in response to a growing understanding of the importance of representation and culturally responsive practices in the classroom, New View EDU dives into the subject with a transformative conversation on the power of structured imagination in creating inclusive cultures. Guests Lonny Brooks and Ahmed Best are, together, the co-hosts of the Afrofuturist podcast and creators of the game Afro-Rithms From the Future. What music they make." - Bram Stoker   The Buzzards go goth on this episode of FIVE DOLLAR BUZZ, as we speak with acclaimed horror author Steven Van Patten and talk about all things vampires, werewolves and the shape of horror to come.    Van Patten is the author of the trilogy Brookwater's Curse - Volume1, Volume 2 and Volume 3: Extinction Agenda -  about a former Georgian plantation slave named Christian Brookwater who becomes a powerful vampire. He becomes an agent for a secret vampire law enforcement who has to keep those damn werewolves in check among other supernatural creatures of mayhem. Brookwater also can't seem to curb his murderous impulses when confronted by obnoxious racists, much to his agency's chagrin. The hero's journey continues as vampire politics, civil war and love triangles abound.   Van Patten has also written a two-book series, Killer Genius: She Kills Because She Cares and Killer Genius 2: Attack of the Gym Rats, about a woman named, appropriately enough, Kendra the Killer Genius. She is a super intelligent serial killer with a conscience and only kills those she conceives to be racist, sexist, abusive or dangerously criminal. In the sequel she takes on sexual predators and the Russian mob.   He also wrote a children's novel called Rudy's Night Out about a young boy who sneaks out at night to a party and discovers a scary world out there.  Will his father - a man with a secret and the last name Brookwater...hmmm - find him in time?! You'll just have to read it to find out for yourself!   He is also a co-author of two anthology series - Hell at the Way Station and Hell at Brooklyn Tea. The former he co-wrote with acclaimed author Marc L. Abbott and the latter with Abbott and Kirk Johnson. They are stories of horror centered around Brooklyn, where Van Patten grew up, and a framing device includes the authors themselves as participants in the supernatural shenanigans.   Hell at the Way Station won two African-American Literary Awards including Best Anthology and Best in Science Fiction. Van Patten also won an award for Best Independent Publisher for his Laughing Black Vampire Productions publishing company.   Van Patten is a member of the New York Chapter of the Horror Writers Association as well as a member of the Directors Guild of America (DGA). In his spare time he has done some stage managing for several television shows. We finally did it. We finally took a look at short compilations and horror anthologies—all sixty million of them—and found that there are many great ones. So many, in fact, that filmmaker Jeff Frumess teamed up with us so we could cover twice as many. Here are our five favorites.

Before they jump into the reviews, however, they discuss some of the big comics news from the past week: the announcement of the 2017 Eisner Award nominations and Free Comic Book Day. The guys don't go into too much detail about the Eisner nominees because they plan on devoting an upcoming episode to that topic. However, they do briefly mention the curious situation surrounding the nomination of the Love Is Love collection in the Best Anthology category. They have much more to say about last Saturday's Free Comic Book Day. Both guys share some of their experiences at their local shops and the free comics they got there. Listen to the podcast's FCBD episode for more details. But then the Two Guys get into the heart of this week's show. They begin with Chris W. Kim's Herman by Trade, coming out this week from SelfMadeHero. Although on the surface this appears to be a more realistic narrative, its fantastic elements become apparent in the transformation of the title character who has the ability to change his appearance and mimic others' abilities at will. As both Derek and Andy point out, this is an unusual story that sticks with you long after reading. Next, they turn to a new graphic biography that is all about fantasy, Rise of the Dungeon Master: Gary Gygax and the Creation of D&D (Nation Books). The art is by Koren Shadmi, but the book is written by David Kushner, based on a profile he wrote for Wired magazine in 2008. What's most notable about this brief biography is the narrative point of view, almost entirely presented in the second person. This is fully in keeping with the spirit of role-playing games, where in this case the the narrating presence is, in essence, your "dungeon master" guiding your awareness as you enter the creators' biographical realm. Finally, Andy and Derek conclude with the latest collaboration from Jonathan Luna and Sarah Vaughn. Eternal Empire #1 (Image Comics) is a fantasy set in a distant world that, as Andy points out, is reminiscent of Game of Thrones. In fact, the guys spend a good bit of time speculating on the originality of this series, wondering if the unique elements will become more apparent in the issues to come. And while Andy isn't sure if he'll stick around to find out, Derek is going to give Eternal Empire a chance, especially given his appreciation of the Luna brothers' previous comics, and especially Luna and Vaughn's previous series Alex + Ada.

Along with Delphine Publications, Tamika is the founder and President of African Americans on the Move Book Club (AAMBC) – an online book club and radio show catering to avid readers across the nation. She is also CEO of Obsessive Soul Media. With future projects in the works from short films, stage plays and much more, Tamika is a young woman on a mission. She has been featured in Uptown Magazine, Essence, Hello Beautiful, Juicy Magazine, and in Vibe Vixen Magazine. Tamika presently tours the country speaking about overcoming her teen pregnancy to fulfill her dream, as well as teaching aspiring writers the publishing ropes. David Hartwell has worked as a Science Fiction and Fantasy editor for Signet, Berkley Putnam, Pocket (where he founded the Timescape imprint and created the Pocket Books StarTrek publishing line), and Tor (where he headed Tor's Canadian publishing initiative, and introduced many Australian writers to the US market). Since 1995, his title at Tor/Forge Books has been "Senior Editor." He chairs the board of directors of the World Fantasy Convention and is an administrator of the Philip K. Dick Award. He holds a Ph.D. in comparative medieval literature and lives in Pleasantville, New York with his wife Kathryn Cramer and their two children. Each year, with Cramer, he edits two anthologies, Year's Best SF and Year's Best Fantasy. Both anthologies have consistently placed in the top 10 of the Locus annual reader poll. In 1988, Hartwell won the World Fantasy Award in the category Best Anthology for The Dark Descent. He has been nominated for Hugo Award on numerous occasions, and won in 2006, 2008 and 2009. Hartwell has also edited four best novel Nebula Award winners.
