My road trip last weekend had a detour to Assateague Island. Learn about wild horses on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, a wild herd in Patagonia, and the chlidren's classic, inspired by the true story of Chincoteague Ponies.
Thanks to Leo for suggesting this week's topic, the ponies of Assateague Island! Further reading: Assateague Wild Ponies Some ponies running free on Assateague Island [photo taken from the site linked above]: Show transcript: Welcome to Strange Animals Podcast. I'm your host, Kate Shaw. This week we're going to learn about the feral horses of Assateague! Thanks to Leo for the suggestion! That's the grown-up Leo; we also have a young Leo who's sent some great suggestions, including one we're hopefully going to get to pretty soon. Before we talk about Assateague ponies, though, we need to start somewhere else. The kelpie is a Scottish water spirit that's supposed to appear as a pony wandering by itself, but if someone tries to catch the pony or get on its back to ride it, suddenly it drags the person into the water and either drowns them or eats them. It's said that the only way to tell that the pony isn't really a pony is to examine its feet. A real pony has hooves, but a kelpie has claws. The story comes from the olden days when it was common to see ponies wandering around loose in Scotland and other parts of the UK. Some of the ponies in these areas were semi-feral, meaning they lived a lot of the time like wild animals. Some ponies were kept in stables and farmyards as working animals, but others were allowed to roam around and feed themselves as they liked. Every so often the wild ponies would be rounded up and any young ones branded by their mother's owner. Sometimes the owner would need another pony to pull a cart or something, and they'd catch one of their ponies and bring it home to train. Sometimes the owner needed money so would catch some of their ponies to sell. The ponies that lived this way had to be tough and hardy to survive almost without human care, but luckily ponies are famously tough. Ponies are a type of small horse, but they're still horses. They're generally sturdy, with a thicker coat than a full-sized horse, and usually stand around 14 hands high at the withers at most. The withers is the little bump of shoulder at the base of a horse's neck, and the horse's back starts behind the withers. A hand is an old horse measurement that has been standardized to four inches, or just over 10 cm, roughly the width of an adult person's hand. 14 hands is equivalent to about 4 and a half feet tall, or 1.4 meters. One of the best-known pony breeds is the Shetland pony, which also happens to be one of the smallest. It only stands 42 inches tall at most, or 107 cm. That's about 3 and a half feet tall. It's mostly used as a child's mount but originally the Shetland was used to pull carts and plows and carry heavy loads, since despite its small size the Shetland pony is incredibly strong. The Shetland comes from the Shetland Isles off the northeastern coast of Scotland, where it's lived for at least two thousand years and probably more like 3,000. The islands get very cold in winter and there isn't a lot of food, so over time the ponies evolved to be small and tough to survive. On the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, there are feral horses living on an island called Assateague. Assateague Island is off the eastern coast of the United States, closest to the states of Virginia and Maryland. They're actually not technically ponies except that they're small, since ponies actually share certain traits that differentiate them from horses, even though these differences aren't enough to call ponies a subspecies of horse. But because the Assateague horses rarely grow taller than 4 and a half feet tall, or 140 cm, people call them ponies. I'm going to stop here and tell you a personal story, because I've actually seen the Assateague ponies myself. I lived in Pennsylvania for a little while after I finished grad school, and at the time I had an awesome dog named Jasper, a Newfoundland I got through Newf rescue. Newfies are bred to be water dogs in the harsh coastal regions of Newfoundland, Canada,
In the stillness of winter, the waves still roll in and out, in and out, slicking the sandy shore of Assateague Island, a narrow thirty seven mile long barrier island which spans both Maryland and Virginia between the Atlantic Ocean and the Sinepuxent Bay. The wind can be sharp this time of year, rustling the sand into small ever changing dunes, and the temperature is nippy. In the cold of the Mid-Atlantic winter, no swimmers sluice through the water, no sunbathers lie on blankets or towels strewn across the shore. The beach stretches as far as the eye can see, an inviting expanse of sand and ocean treasures brought in on the tide. The famous horses roam the island even in winter, grazing in the tall marsh grasses on the bay side of the island, trotting along the beach, nosing around the trash receptacles in the picnic areas and campgrounds. They are ever present on the island, and the reason that many people visit Assateague, combining a beach camping trip with the novelty of wild horses all around. Drawn by the annual Pony Penning, also known as the Chesapeake Pony Swim, or nostalgia for Marguerite Henry's beloved book Misty of Chincoteague, throngs of people descend on Assateague Island in the spring and summer. But in the winter, without the crowds and their noise, without the smell of picnics, without all the distractions that high season brings, Assateague offers up a different kind of experience, full of quiet discovery. A Fairfax County middle school counselor was able to interact with kids for nearly two years after police charged him with soliciting a minor for prostitution. An investigation by our colleague Scott Gelman found that Fairfax County Schools never knew he was arrested for this offense, in part, because emails from Chesterfield Police alerting them to his arrest bounced back. It was a long, hot ride down Route 50, much of which at the time was only two lanes. To keep me from being a typical kid and barraging my grandparents with "Are we there yet? Are we there yet?" my grandparents used to stop at the store and get me comic books to read in the car to keep me occupied. These comics were Superboy, Superman, and Archie and Little Archie. Recently, I met Paul Castiglia, who is a comic book writer and editor known for his work for Archie Comics, Archie's Weird Mysteries, Archie Americana Series, Little Archie, Looney Tunes Magazine, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tex Avery Comics, the DC Comics series Showcase, Sonic The Hedgehog, Cracked Magazine, and others. We had a great talk about those comic books, as well as some interesting facts behind the song "Sugar Sugar", the twangy typical 60's rock and roll piped into sitcoms whenever there's and episode when one of the characters puts together a band (think Opie on Andy Griffith or Chip on "My Three Sons" or "The Mosquitoes" on Gilligan's Island) , "Sea Monkeys" and the gimmicky rip-off offers in the back of comic books, and disturbing puppets from children's television shows. Here is the link to his blog-scaredsillybypaulcastiglia.blogspot.comPaul's IMDb Page-https://www.imdb.com/name/nm5439244/?ref_=fn_nm_nm_1&fbclid=IwAR11GyeRsriaM_Th3nPjtNsk9JJkWav_LlzFHIF0aQmODVdCsuV4q8zMDckPaul's Wikipedia Page-https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Castiglia?fbclid=IwAR0aFJGCYxPdpqp1zkgpOVrYVpJkzQTJ-ylHCcah9emP5pBCljMABU4BhLwA link to Paul's Recent Appearance on the Laurel and Hardy Podcasthttps://anchor.fm/laurelandhardyblog/episodes/24--Habeas-Corpus-1928-with-Paul-Castiglia-and-Randy-Skretvedt-e1knuo7?fbclid=IwAR0h_dKkgJPZDxQd_GYswYYsbMSTgfpyPFHSWvCj0yLJyla2vvmSXP_hcZoThe Fowl Players of Perryville will be returning to the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad on August 13, September 10, October 8, and October 29. for more information, please see www.wmsr.com or www.fowlplayersofperryville.com.#michaelspedden #fowlplayersradio #paulcastiglia #archiecomics #littlearchie #achiesweirdmysteries #cracked #crackedmagazine #scaredsilly #sonicthehedgehog #teenagemutantninjaturtles #fowlplayersofperryville #wmsr #westernmarylandscenicrailroad

They were traveling south toward Assateague Island off the coast of Maryland.
For the most part, the wildlife we see is printed on road signs ... As feral free-ranging seniors, living in the great outdoors of North America, one would think that by now we'd have spotted a real live moose in the wild. Nope. Not a one. Grand Teton's, Canada, Indian Lake, New York, home of the Moose Festival ... and still no moose. Bears? Okay, we've seen two juvenile brown bears foraging for wild apples near the road in the Canadian Rockies. But, for all the months we stayed in The Florida Keys, we never spotted a single Key Deer – not even when we drove thirty miles out of our way on Key Deer Boulevard to a sanctuary. Yup, we couldn't even spot a Key Deer in a Key Deer Refuge. It's all about priorities. The post Assateague Island: Horses of Course appeared first on Living In Beauty.

In this episode, I talk with Gretchen Knapp of the National Park Service. Gretchen runs the Visitors Center in Tom’s Cove at the Virginia end. Gretchen and Assateague Island have been practically inseparable for most of her adult life. As we say in this episode, it’s not so much that she claimed the island as the island claimed her. In her two and a half decades there, she’s learned and taught what seems like everything there is to know about Assateague, from… well, too much to squeeze into this paragraph. You’ll just have to listen to find out. Recorded May 2018 and produced January 2021.
An Island where wild horses run in both Virginia and Maryland is where we are going this week. Specifically, we are running along the beach on Assateague's Island to visit the Chincoteague pony, and staying to watch the "Pony Penning" event on the other side of the island. Then we wander into a corn maze and shoot apples from a cannon at Lawyer's Farm in Thurmont.

Michael Ver Sprill of Milky Way Mike fame on YouTube, joins the podcast to share the story of his Covid-19 Quarantine and tell us about his FIRST Milky Way of 2020! Mike went out to Assateague Island to get away from the New Jersey light pollution and captured three beautiful timelapses of the rising Milky Way Core over the Atlantic Ocean! In one of his captures, he had an incredible looking timelapse that starts on the inside of a tent and while watching the Milky Way rise through the open door of the tent it moves THROUGH the tent opening and out to reveal the entire horizon! It is a VERY COOL timelapse that you need to check out his YouTube channel and see for yourself! I share the fear that welled up in my imagination as I stood out there alone on that cliff wall capturing my SECOND SUCCESSFUL Dual-Exposure Milky Way Panorama! Hashtag 59's Season 3 Podcast is 50 Episodes long and each episode will provide FIVE outdoor adventures in each of the US's 50 states. We are doing these episodes in ABC Order of the states and episode eighteen is Maryland. The goal is to give you ideas and opportunities to experience outdoor adventure anywhere and everywhere in the United States of America. Here's our list for Maryland: 1. Visit Assateague Island National Seashore: Located in both Maryland and Virginia, Assateague Island is a 37-mile long barrier island located off the eastern coast of the Delmarva peninsula facing the Atlantic Ocean. The northern two-thirds of the island is in Maryland while the southern third is in Virginia. Assateague's wild horses are well known, even to many people who have never been to the island. 2. Bike the East Coast Greenway: The East Coast Greenway is a walking and biking route stretching 3,000 miles from Maine to Florida, connecting our nation’s most populated corridor. Greenway highlights in Maryland include the scenic Jones Falls Trail into Baltimore, the rural Torrey C. Brown trail north of Baltimore, and the B&A Trail leading delightfully to the port city of Annapolis. 3. Fed Fitness Group Workout pre dawn followed by True Blood Juice at Pure Raw. 4. Visit and walk/bike Gettysburg National Military Park. (Oops it's located in Pennsylvania but Mike R was in Maryland when he visited for the day so he was confused. It's a funny conversation piece in this podcast!) 5. Ride the Rails Trails: While the train is still a great way to get around, there aren’t that many around anymore. The railroad's loss can be your gain, as more and more of these abandoned railroad tracks have been paved over and turned into biking and hiking trails. The Western Maryland Rail Trail boasts 28 miles of flat, paved bike trail along the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal, and the Baltimore-Annapolis Trail connects Annapolis and Glen Burnie along the former B&A Short Line Railroad. There are more than a dozen rail trails in the state, so you can see much of Maryland this way. Thanks for listening to Season 3 of our podcast featuring all 50 US States and some of each state's unique and hopefully lesser known to you Outdoor Adventures. This episode featured the state of Maryland. Subscribe to our podcast if you enjoy what you hear and if you feel so inclined to leave a review we would be grateful. With vacation time rolling around again, GamerDude returns to one of his favorite vacation destinations: the beach. As he has talked about in previous episodes, when he was a kid, the family vacation for many years was to the beach at Assateague Island, near Chincoteague Virginia. That's where GamerDude learned to love the beach. As he's gotten older, he has expanded his taste in beaches, and many of his vacations involve trips to different beaches in the U.S. He talks about "discovering" the Jersey Shore with his girlfriend (at the time) during a trip to Wildwood, New Jersey. He discusses how big a revelation it was to discover that some beach towns actually have hotels, condos, and houses right on the beach. He talks about the Boardwalk in towns along the Jersey Shore, and the shops and carnival games you can find there. He talks about trips to Myrtle Beach in South Carolina, and Ocean City in Maryland. He talks about discovering Cedar Key in Florida, and contrasts the quaintness there with the tourism of Clearwater, and its $25 charge just to sit in a beach chair. And he talks about looking for beaches in the Florida Keys and discovering that, while there may not be many beaches in the Keys, a trip there is still worth your while.
