Arches and Canyonlands National Parks are located in Eastern Utah and are both famous on their own accord. Arches is home to the Delicate Arch, which has become a famous symbol of Utah (it is on their license plate) and is one of the most recognized natural formations in the United States. Canyonlands is a much larger park with many opportunities for outdoor adventure through four wheel driving, challenging backpacking, etc. Today's episode dives into the Lena Pace's (Arches & Canyonlands superintendent) perspective on the park as she ramps up to being superintendent (she has been superintendent since early April 2024). We are lucky to get unique and never before heard insight into her transition, into the partnerships she is maintaining and growing, the trails she is exploring and the Canyonlands districts she is learning about. We also hear about her experience growing up in rural Alaska and her 20+ years of experience as a Law Enforcement ranger. There is a lot of laughing in this episode, not one you want to miss. Correction Corner (a few mistakes we noticed and wanted to address): Lena misnamed one of her first hikes she did in the park -- she called it “Wall Street” but it is actually “Park Avenue” (in the case you want to do the hikes she mentioned)I, Maddie, accidentally said off-roading was allowed in the park, but it is not. What is allowed in Canyonlands is four-wheel driving (I didn't know, but learned, the difference between the two), which enables for a unique backcountry experience, enabling you to get farther out in the backcountry than you would get just hiking.Sponsors:Who Runs This Park is presented by ExpertVoice: Outdoor brands like Big Agnes, Mammut, La Sportiva, Chaco and more offer discounts on ExpertVoice of up to 60% off for industry experts like you. Utah has five spectacular national parks, and Arches is one of them. It's a relatively small park. The scenic drive is only 18 miles long, ending at the Devil's Garden area, but you'll have incredible views of the reddish rockscape the entire way right from your vehicle. Of course, it's always better to get out on the trails and take in as much off-road as your timetable and legs will allow. Two of the park's most impressive arches – Delicate Arch and Landscape Arch – are well worth the hiking you'll need to tackle to stand in awe before them. This week the Traveler's Lynn Riddick and her trip companion, Tica Nathan, spent a day and a half in the park and offer up some of their experiences and observations.

Moab is like nothing you've seen on Earth! It's the reason why people from around the world visit every year. In fact, over 50 movies have been filmed in Moab or Arches National Park! Jon and Jenn talk about the two National Parks within Moab: Canyonlands and Arches. If you're planning on going, remember that reservations are now required for Arches. When you get in, head directly to the Delicate Arch. Of the 2000 arches withing the park, Delicate is the big one! There are a lot of great restaurants to choose from as well. For pizza you can have Antica farma, sushi there's Sabaku, Thai is Thai Bella and the Sunset Grill for a nice occasion. The Moab area has some of the darkest night skies in the US! So stay up late and see the Milky Way with your naked eye.

We had an awesome couple of hikes at Arches National Park - we did Delicate arch the day before recording our Devil's Garden hike, and while we don't talk much about it, it was still also an awesome hike. Delicate Arch was a fairly intense uphill, but totally doable in sneakers and with plenty of water - fair warning, you're in the sun the WHOLE time, so don't underestimate your water intake, and keep up on those electrolytes! Devil's Garden was just an all-around fun hike. Technical enough to be challenging, but beautiful with the constantly-changing terrain and gorgeous views of the arches. Recommend 10/10! Again, make sure you bring water and nutrients. If you decide to do the whole loop it does get very remote. There were a lot of people near the entrance and exit, but not so many on the primitive trails. Shoutout to our new friend @Pawan_g_photography who we met on the trail and joined us for the scrambles! Cheers to more adventures Pawan! Our time in camp was very interesting - from a crazy windstorm on our first night, to swooping bats our second, Arches offers constant adventure! We loved this park, and look forward to exploring it again someday! P.S. Sorry not sorry for nerding out on the bats, it brought back fond memories of the summer we spent near Carlsbad Caverns, seeing the bats swoop out at sundown. Incredible animals, probably worthy of a Nature Nerd episode...
Tamara K. Anderson tells a story in her life about a time when she felt completely overwhelmed, the answer she received, and the 4 steps to problem solve any situation with God's help. My Story of Feeling OverwhelmedIn this episode I take you to a time in my life as a young mother when life was very overwhelming. I had 4 children ages: 7 years, 6 years, 2 1/2 years and 6 months. The challenge: only one of my children could communicate with me verbally. That is because my 6 year old Nathan and my 2 1/2 year old Jacob were on the autism spectrum. Nathan was challenging and wouldn't stay dressed, tantrumed because he couldn't communicate, and smeared his poop into the carpet every few days. Jacob was so smart and capable at escaping our home and running straight toward danger because he had no fear. Once we found him climbing the ladder onto a neighbors roof, running into the street or once he almost jumped into a neighbor's pool. My days were long and my nights were even longer since kiddos on the spectrum have a hard time falling asleep and staying asleep (plus I had a sleeping baby). Exhausted as I was, I was devastated when a much anticipated family walk ended in disaster. It was the straw which broke the camel's back and I fell to my knees in prayer where I poured out my grief to God. I promise I will now share with you a solution and then the resolution of the story. 4 Steps to Solve Life's ProblemsConnect & Ask. This means to find a place to talk to God openly and honestly about our situations and challenges and then ask for help. Listen & Record. This means take time to listen for ideas, inspiration and answers you will get and record them so you will remember to act on them. Plan & Act. Sometimes we need to brainstorm or plan how we will break down how we will act on our impression. Then we can act on it. Repeat. When we take action we will either find success or have a failure/learning lesson. If we succeed, we can repeat the process and ask God to teach us the next baby step in our life. If we fail, we go back and ask God to help us figure out the solution. PromiseAnswers come. They came for me. That night as I prayed to God he answered, "Tamara, this is normal for you." This changed my perspective to realize He knew me personally. He knew my name. He knew my situation and He would help me figure out how to solve problems in my own "normal for me" way. Seven years later our family decided to hike Delicate Arch in Arches National Park in Utah. This was a huge undertaking! My husband and I prayed and asked God for help. We listened and recorded our ideas and thoughts. Then we made a plan: We would write on a piece of paper what we were doing to communicate with Nathan and then give him an iPod and headphones to distract him. We then began the hike. My sweet family who couldn't even walk around the block together before then did the 3 mile, uphill hike to Delicate Arch. We did it together. It was a miracle. We have since repeated this process and had many more successful hikes. InvitationWill you use these steps to problem solve in your life? I promise God is anxiously awaiting to connect and help you find your "normal for me" solution. He knows you. He knows your problem and He knows the solution if you will ask. #tamarakanderson #storiesofhopeinhardtimes #podcast #hope #God #hardtimes #questions #answers #God #prayer #steps #autism #autismmom You can read the transcript to todays episode here: https://tamarakanderson.com/podcasts/4-surefire-steps-to-solve-lifes-problems (https://tamarakanderson.com/podcasts/4-surefire-steps-to-solve-lifes-problems)

When it comes to iconic images from the national parks, Arches is right up there with the Grand Canyon, Old Faithful at Yellowstone, and the bat cave at Carlsbad Caverns. Especially the Delicate Arch, which is so popular that it’s featured on Utah’s license plates. Arches National Park in Utah was a bucket list priority of ours once we first started living and traveling in the RV. It was actually one of the first national parks we visited once we made the official leap from Chicago condo to RV. This episode, we recount our time there among these natural wonders, each with their own unique personality—from Delicate Arch to the Parade of Elephants to the park's own twins, Double Arch. We'll also talk about our visit to the city of Moab. Follow Parklandia on Instagram at @parklandiapod, join the Parklandia Rangers Facebook Group and Like our Facebook page! But to see it, you have to hike in. No motorized vehicles are allowed on the trails. Up until now, that's meant Sam Durst, who is 36 and has cerebral palsy, had to wait in the parking lot when his outdoor-loving family made the hike. But recently, they discovered a wheelchair that made the hike possible and for the first time, were all able to enjoy the spectacular arch, up close, together. The Enduring Appeal of Mister Rogers (50:37)Guest: Aisha White, PhD, Director of the Positive Racial Identity Development in Early Education, Office of Child Development, University of PittsburghMr. Rogers –and any movie about him –feels like a soothing balm in these turbulent times, doesn't it?I loved the documentary about him last year. There's a lot of Mr. Rogers warm-fuzziness going on in Pittsburgh right now with this latest film. That's where Fred Rogers lived. He filmed all 30-plus years of his show lived at WQED Studio just blocks from the University of Pittsburgh where one of his main mentors in child development was a professor. Over the years, lots of Pitt students and faculty worked with Mr. Rogers on his program, including Aisha White. 2019's Hottest Toys with The Toy Guy (1:06:33)Guest: Chris Byrne, toy industry consultant and creator of The Toy GuyJust in case Santa needs a little help, we've got Chris Byrne, aka The Toy Guy, on the line with some hints. Instead of doing all the talking, this week we have invited some of our listeners to share their tips on travel based on their recent summer vacations. We get real insights from fellow travelers on visiting Montreal and many National Parks including Death Valley, Arches, Olympic, and Cascades. ON THE PODCAST 00:32 - Talking with Kim and Tamara 01:40 - Talking with Harmony Skillman from Momma to Go 02:09 - How long to visit Montreal 02:36 - Where she stayed 03:50 - Top things to do and see in Montreal 08:26 - Final tips for Montreal 09:33 - Harmony’s favorite travel gear 10:58 - Talking with Michelle Thompson 11:52 - How long to spend in Arches National Park 12:34 - Where Michelle and her family stayed 14:23 - Favorite things to do 20:55 - Top tips for visiting the Arches 23:06 - Michelle’s favorite travel gear 24:00 - Talking with Jessica Noland about Death Valley 24:30 - When to visit Death Valley and how long to spend 26:57 - Where you could stay 29:08 - What to do and see in Death Valley 33:57 - Jessica’s favorite travel gear 35:15 - Talking with Martha Gitiha about Washington State 37:04 - How long to spend in each National Park 38:26 - Where to stay at the parks 39:50 - When you start booking your trip 40:40 - Top sights to see 46:18 - Tips for visiting the parks 48:19 - Martha’s favorite travel gear 50:34 - Talking with Kim and Tamara about what is coming up! LISTENER TIPS If you are planning a trip to Montreal, it is recommended to plan at least five full days to explore the area. Any less and you may feel like you didn’t have enough time to visit everywhere you wanted to. If you are visiting in the summer, be sure to be aware of when things are closed during the week. Towards the end of August some attractions like Six Flags were not open during the week anymore. If you are planning to visit attractions while in the city you may want to look into the Attraction Pass which includes 28 attraction, metro and bus fare, and is good for 72 hours. Montreal is very advanced when if comes to paying with credit card. In Harmony’s case her family never needed to exchange money. If you are planning a trip out West and are interested in visiting the Arches, spending a couple days is a good amount of time to explore if you are solely interested in the Arches. But if you are interested in going four-wheeling or visiting the surrounding area as well you should plan to spend more than two days. If you would like to see the Delicate Arch which is a Utah landmark and is used on their license plates, be aware that it is a long hike with no shade. To get around this, Michelle and her family started there hike at around 5:30pm which worked out perfectly. Michelle also recommends that when you are getting a picture standing below the arch to hold hands and spread out! When visiting Arches National Park keep in mind that there are no food vendors of places to eat. So plan ahead and pack snacks to carry with you and maybe even a cooler in the car that has lunch and other food depending on how long you are planning to explore. Also keep in mind that the restrooms are minimal so when you see one you should use it because you don’t know when you will see the next one. When planning a trip to Death Valley you should try and plan your visit in early spring, late fall, or the winter time due to the high temperatures. If you really want explore Death Valley you should plan on spending at least a few full days there. There is so much to do and see, so you won’t run out of things. Be sure to bring food with you to the park because there isn’t much inside of the park and what there is may be closed. So make sure if you are planning to eat in the park to check the hours or bring food with you. If you are planning to visit one or even all three of the national parks in Washington State, you should plan for at least three days in each. Though Olympic National Park you could spend much more. Camping in the National Parks in Washington State. You need to book at least six months in advance for campsites. If you are planning to stay in cabins of other lodges inside of the parks you will need to book your trip about a year in advance. So keep this in mind when you are planning your trip. FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR Harmony recommends dressing comfortably and though her family didn’t have a good daypack she suggests using one to carry around snacks and other necessities. She will be looking for her own before her next trip. Michelle loves to wear her Chacoshoes. She also loves to use her Smart Flaskwater bottle that came with a carrying case that straps across her body. Jessica loves to wear her Lululemonleggings especially when taking a flight because they are so comfortable. She will pair that with a t-shirt and loose fit button up shirt and a pair of tennis shoes. Martha loves wearing her Columbiasandals along with Kuhlpants, which keep her comfortable and cool. There's one natural rock arch that's known better than all others in the US, in fact, it's on the state of Utah's license plate. It had its own postage stamp, and the 2002 Winter Olympics torch relay passed through it. On this episode of America's National Parks, Delicate Arch, and the strange history of attempts to protect it at Arches National Park. Show notes and more info at nationalparkpodcast.com.

Utah hit the jackpot when it comes to National Parks...Bryce, Zion, Arches, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef...but how can one see them all? Allison from Tips for Family Trips shares her sample itinerary for seeing all the parks in 10 days and her top tips for visiting Utah's National Parks. She believes that travel makes families stronger, smarter and happier and strives to provide information and tools to help families become just that. Allison lives near Salt Lake City, Utah with her husband and two children - a twelve-year-old daughter and a nine-year-old son. They enjoy traveling just about anywhere, but national parks, road trips and adventures throughout their home state of Utah are what they do most. Allison has an MBA from the University of Utah. Follow Tips for Family Trips on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest. PLANNING A TRIP TO UTAH'S NATIONAL PARKS Plan on staying at least 7-10 days if you want to hit all the National Parks (Bryce, Zion, Arches, Canyonlands and Capitol Reef), at least two weeks if you want to hit the Grand Canyon and Monument Valley Salt Lake City is the main airport hub to fly in and out of, but you can also fly out of St. George or Moab There is a 5-6 hour drive between the three triangle corners of Salt Lake City, Moab and St. George You could do Arches and Canyonlands OR Zion and Bryce on individual weekends For a one week itinerary, start in Salt Lake City and spend the first day driving. Day 2: Zion National Park Day 3: Bryce National Park (can do it in a ½ day) Day 4: Capitol Reef National Park (very diverse and not as crowded) Day 5: Arches National Park (the hike to the delicate arch is short but uphill and crowded so going off season is best) Day 6: Canyonlands National Park -- this park is in three different sections and the Island in the Sky district is perfect for families, especially the White Rim Overlook Day 7: Drive back to Salt Lake City If you are just spending one day per park, you will just see the highlights and do one bigger hike Stargazing tourism is popular in Bryce and Capitol Reef National Parks Some lesser-known gems include Goblin Valley State Park, Snow Canyon State Park, Best Friends Animal Sanctuary Zion and Arches can get very crowded during the high season and it is best to go early. Those parks also get over 100 degrees in the late spring and summer January and February are great times to go to Canyonlands because they are dry and in the 40s during that time Fall break in Utah is in October on a Thursday and Friday so the parks will be very busy during those days Spring break is usually the last week of March or first week of April Parks are crowded from April - August If you want to camp inside the park, you should book at least a few months in advance BEST PLACE TO TAKE FAMILY PHOTO The most iconic spot is at the end of the trail in Arches National Park that overlooks the Delicate Arch. Another great spot would be Bryce Canyon at sunrise. FAVORITE TRAVEL GEAR When traveling in the National Parks, Allison uses a comfortable hiking boot and the EcoVessel water bottle. Allison also likes Dansko walking shoes for her other vacations. APP OF THE WEEK Kim and Tamara both rely on Waze to navigate around traffic jams and other obstacles along the route. "Sometimes, when I'm hiking somewhere near Moab and chatting with other people, I think about saying something like, 'You know what's great about this hike? In about 75-minutes, you can be at Milt's Stop & Eat'," says Brendan Leonard. "Milt's is a 19-mile drive from Delicate Arch in Arches National Park, it's 55-miles from Indian Creek and 75-miles to Canyonlands' towering red and white striped sandstone needles. I mean, when you think about it, it's kind of the nucleus of all that rad stuff." In the first episode of our Mileposts series, we explore the national parks around Moab, Utah--and celebrate with a milkshake. You can find more of Brendan's writing at: www.semi-rad.com/

A relaxing minute or two watching the sunset at Delicate Arch.
Take a serene journey to Arches National Park, home of the sublime Delicate Arch. Along the way you'll see other arches and amazing vistas in the park, ending with a spectacular sunset time lapse at Delicate Arch.
