Show Notes:Paloma's Links:Paloma Farkas (website)Paloma's instagramEpisode Intro:Dear guests of the Female Guides Requested Podcast, happy Wednesday. This is your host Ting Ting from Las Vegas. Our guest today is Paloma Farkas from Bishop California. Paloma is only 25 years old, but she already has 6 years of guiding under her belt. Right after she graduated from high school, her parents gifted her a NOLS backcountry rock course at the Wind River Range. Paloma then listened to the callings of mountains and followed her heart towards alpine rock climbing and started her guiding career.Paloma grew up in Seattle, Washington where she discovered her passion for the mountains through family backpacking and climbing trips in the Cascades. In 2017 she traveled to South America and fell in love with the granite towers of Patagonia. Since then she has split her time between Patagonia, Chile and the US. Paloma spends as much time as possible climbing and some of her favorite areas are Patagonia, the Peruvian Andes, the Cascades, Indian Creek, the Wind River Range, and the High Sierras. Her favorite type of climbing is big wall alpine climbing, but Paloma also enjoys single pitch trad and sport climbing, bouldering and ice climbing. When Paloma isn't pursuing her own climbing goals, she finds fulfillment in sharing her passion with others and teaching the skills necessary to be self-sufficient in the mountains. She is currently an AMGA Rock Guide, Apprentice Alpine Guide, Wilderness First Responder, AIARE Avalanche Pro 1, and Leave No Trace Trainer.I admire Paloma's attitude of going for it when she knows what she wants. She works hard and remains optimistic. We had so much laughter during our conversation and I know you'll laugh with us too when you listen to this episode. As she boards the light aircraft, Lauren never imagines she'll end up stranded on a mountaintop. There she'll face a desperate choice: wait for a rescue that may never materialise? Girl Scout Troop Leader Experience: A Podcast about Girl Scouts for Troop Leaders and other Girl Scout Volunteers - Formerly

I'm thrilled to introduce you to Wendy H., an Ambassador high adventure troop leader from GS San Diego. Her troop has taken some incredible adventures, including backpacking in the Canadian Yukon, High Sierras, and this year, Mt. Whitney. She is also a certified canoe instructor and her troop has canoed parts of the Colorado River, kayaked in an Alaskan bay and whitewater rafted down the Kern River. The crazy part? She wasn't an experienced adventurer before becoming a troop leader - she built those skills right alongside her girls, and now, she's done things she previously wouldn't have even dreamed of. We hope this interview inspires you that you, too, can design a high adventure lifestyle as a Girl Scout Volunteer.

Anthony McGill/Pacifica Quartet — American Stories (Cedille) Jump to giveaway form New Classical Tracks - Pacifica Quartet with Anthony McGill by “I don't remember the first time I played or performed the Mozart Clarinet Quintet. There's something about the first journeys into works that are especially memorable for me,” said clarinetist Anthony McGill when talking about how he and the Pacifica Quartet formed powerful memories as they learned and grew into the music featured on their new release, American Stories.  Can you talk about what we hear in James Lee III's Quintet? “I've been thinking a lot about this because of my entire life as a Black musician. Lee's piece interests me, particularly with his discussion about his inspiration from pictures of Native Americans or indigenous peoples, but also a blending of Black Americans who can trace their roots to indigenous populations in America.” Can you talk about the story behind Richard Danielpour's Four Angels? “The thematic material is based on the Black American struggle and civil rights movement, which he has been a champion of through his musical voice for many years. This particular piece, which was dedicated to the four girls who were killed in the Birmingham bombing in 1963, is a dedication to the lives that have been lost for freedom in this country. “Recording it with the Pacifica Quartet worked perfectly. This concept of identity represents Danielpour. He always tells his story. We have individual stories of growing up. He grew up in Florida as a Persian American, but it always started in the civil rights movement. It's about how you can feel the plight of other people and be a part of a movement in that way and then use your voice as a composer or creator to share the voices and the stories of others.” How about Ben Shirley's High Sierra Sonata? Pacifica Quartet violist Mark Holloway: “It starts with this external sound, which is our breathing, waking up and starting the day. To start the recording, we had to breathe. McGill put some air through his instrument, and we were stretching to have a human side to the way the music opens peacefully and calmly. You can imagine the High Sierras. It's evocative music that marches to the beat of its own drum. He doesn't write music the way everyone else does, which is the mark of a very good composer.” McGill: “It's great to be on here with Halloway because we've never performed these pieces before, but we also haven't had long conversations. What Halloway says reminds me of my parents and family's visual art background. It reminds me of music that is similar to a collage. There are different pieces from different parts of one's artist's life within the work.” Watch now To hear the rest of my conversation, click on the extended interview above, or download the extended podcast on iTunes or wherever you get your podcasts. Growing up in the Pacific Northwest, there was always this speculation about Bigfoot, Sasquatch, Hairy Man and what it was, and if it was. And it seems like hunters and loggers are the ones that have the most encounters and are the most likely to NOT talk about it. Ron Morehead started researching in the early 1970s out of a hunting camp in the High Sierras. We talk to Ron about where the journey has taken him and his latest book The Quantum Bigfoot.

Welcome to the final episode of the season, our last episode before our summer break. While we are taking a little break, we will still have lots and lots of content for you. There will be Dev parties, updates from the road, and a few special surprises along the way. But today we will be checking back in with Kate Miller Wilson (@katemillerwilson on IG), what's she been up to for the past year? And will also be talking to you about photographer Anne Brigman, fortunately for everyone Kate will be sticking around to help us! Not only that but the film detectives, Charlie and Sara (@casualscience and @thefutureofwhat on IG), we'll be popping in with another case to solve. There's also the zine reviews, the answering machine, and so much more!   Anne Brigman Photographer Anne Brigman is known almost exclusively for her nudes. Much of her known and available work depicts bodies contorted and twisted among the contorted and twisted pines of the high sierra mountains in California. Her photography was unlike almost anything else in the early 1900s. And yet it fit perfectly into Alfred Stieglitz's photo-secessionist movement. Today, with Kate Miller-Wilson, we're going to talk about Anne Brigman and Alfred Stieglitz.  By the turn of the century, Anne had become nearly obsessed with the High Sierras. It was then that she discovered photography. She probably acquired her first camera from her sister, Elizabeth and was immediately smitten. Her first photos, taken when she was 32, were of her family. These were mostly typical portraits rendered in a somewhat impressionistic style. A year later, her work was exhibited by the San Francisco Photographic Salon and printed in Camera Craft, the magazine of the San Francisco Camera Club. She also began a correspondence with Alfred Stieglitz, founder of the Photo Secession movement, who was currently waging a war with both the photography and art communities, insisting that photography be considered an art rather than a science.  Kate, Vania and Eric each picked a few of Anne's photos and discussed them while talking about her life. Here are the photos they discussed (in order)…     Kate Miller-Wilson We talked to Kate last year at this time, so we're just catching up. This is a great opportunity to discuss things we wouldn't normally tackle. Heavy hitting subjects like: Beach Shooting Underwater 4×5? When to shoot color and why we don't do it anyway. 8×10 is just bigger 4×5 How to avoid Aero Ektar Cliches We discuss a few of Kate's photos, of course. Here are some…   Zine Reviews Where We Were (Vol. 2) by Shania Logan. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1181034648/where-we-were-vol-ii-film-photography With this issue, Shania leads us into town by way of closed up corner stores and school buses decaying in the sun. Mobile homes quickly disintegrate once unoccupied, and tar paper shacks are little more than a foundation. Long cold factories with darkened, smashed windows explain the depressing number of houses vacated, and the lines of empty streets.   Happy Together by Federico Quaglino IG: @fedequaglino   PATREON Thank you to everyone who supports us! In this episode we interview Brandon 'Horsepower' Weis. Growing up in Ohio, Brandon didn't see much of the outdoors - at least not in the sense that he does now. That all changed when Ohio State offered him a stipend to perform a transformational experience. He was immediately interested in a month-long backpacking trip in the High Sierras - but not because it was outdoors. He wanted to do it for the challenge. After his trip he was hooked and began planning longer thru hikes to finish before he headed to grad school. Only one problem. There was a global shutdown soon after those plans were made. Rather than ditching the idea - he decided to pack all of the hikes into one year. In 2021 he hiked the Appalachian Trail, Pacific Crest Trail, Continental Divide Trail, and Arizona Trail. The best part? He's adding more to his list. If you've ever wondered about the mental and physical challenges that come along with so many hikes in so little time, then this one's for you! Pursuing Freedom

Finding financial freedom is the starting point, but then you have to decide how to use that freedom to live the life you want. Hear insights about: How Tim sold 2500 homes in 15 years during his real estate career, and how he made major life changes at the age of 40 after finding financial freedom How Tim overcame a difficult childhood and discovered the life he could create for himself through real estate Why allowing your ego to drive your career can be harmful, and why shelving your ego and focusing on serving others is the key to true success Why Tim hired an escrow coordinator during his second year in business to “buy himself a life” and put his financial freedom to work Tim describes the mission and purpose of his non-profit organization, “1 Life Fully Lived”, and he shares tools and resources his organization has created Why Tim chose each of his top two life mottos: “always look for win-wins” and “I'm not a victim” Why Tim focused on building a business that was efficient, effective and productive, and how it freed him to create win-wins and be present in his life Why it is important to find a place in your life where you can “fit in and thrive”, and why reinventing yourself and finding new goals can be life-changing and fulfilling Finding Financial Freedom Becoming a real estate agent can be a powerful platform for finding financial freedom… but it can also be easy to fall into the trap of always wanting more, always pushing yourself, and never actually tapping into the freedom you've created. This week's guest on Pursuing Freedom is Tim Rhode, a successful author who sold more than 2,500 homes in 15 years. At age 40, Tim realized that he wanted “off the hamster wheel”, and because of hard work and smart investments, he was able to retire and shift his focus to creating and living the life of his dreams. During our conversation, Tim shares how he decided to leave a thriving career and instead create a non-profit organization focused on lifting others up, and he discusses setting new and different goals for himself that allow him to really thrive and follow his passions! Recognizing When It's Time for Change As Tim explained, he built an extraordinary career selling real estate. His income grew exponentially, but he made minimal changes to his lifestyle and instead focused on saving and investing his money and growing his wealth. Then, by the time Tim was 40 years old, he realized that he was ready to stop grinding and follow other things he felt passionately about. Thanks to his hard work and frugal lifestyle, he was in the financial position to break out of the grind. However, Tim knew that he wanted more from his life than just relaxing or having fun all day, so he focused on building his non-profit organization “1 Life Fully Lived”, to help people who were just starting out on their path or who were overcoming tough circumstances get a leg up in life. Tim Rhode shows us that it's important to recognize when we need to make big changes in our lives, and that being courageous and stepping into those changes can bring real rewards. Leveraging Your Freedom Many of us got started in real estate because we wanted to be able to create a specific life for ourselves, and finding financial freedom was supposed to be the key to that life. But somewhere along the path it can be easy to get caught up in the competitive, workaholic lifestyle and lose track of your goals. It can be really empowering to take a step back and consider what is really important to you, then make changes to your life that give you greater alignment with your priorities. You've worked so hard in finding financial freedom, but you must not forget to take advantage of that freedom. If you'd like to learn more about Tim Rhode, you can reach out to him at tim@timrhode.com. And to learn about his non-profit 1 Life Fully Lived or to find out how you can help them in their mission to help people create a roadmap for living their best life, please visit their website at https://1lifefullylived.org/. About Tim Rhode Tim would tell you that he got off to a slow start. After growing up in the rural town of Portola in Northern California and barely graduating high school, Tim Rhode found himself at the age of 25 working as a grocery clerk with two young children to provide for. He eventually found his “niche” selling real estate; and from 1986 to 2000, he sold over 2,500 homes and from 1997 to 2006 he invested in over 100 properties. Tim focused on saving money, keeping his expenses low, and playing solid “financial defense” which allowed him to basically retire, and he was financially free at the age of 40. Not wanting to play, hike, bike or ski all day, Tim threw his energy into his true passion: helping people thrive and live their most fulfilling life. He founded the nonprofit 1Life Fully Lived to help people of all ages gain the tools and skills they need to thrive and also co-founded GoBundance, a high-level mastermind, with David Osborn, Pat Hiban and Mike McCarthy to help healthy, wealthy, generous people lead epic lives. We have a women's tribe now! Tim has also authored numerous books and has been featured on a variety of podcasts and media outlets. He now lives near his children in the High Sierras with his wife and dog. “I'm sooo hungry!” I said, “I want to eat something!” “No,” my wife said. “We have to keep going. If we eat now, there won't be enough for later.” We were in one of the most beautiful landscapes on the planet, a remote part of the High Sierras in California, and all I could think about was food. This was hunger like I'd never known it before.

Today’s guest is all about the business of filmmaking. Simon Swart has 20+ years of expert marketing experience - working primarily on the development, selling, and distribution of some large franchises and films such as Star Wars, Avatar, Planet of the Apes and X-Men, Black Swan, and Slumdog Millionaire. After years behind the scenes, Swart has taken up executive producing/producing independent projects. His film credits include The King’s Daughter, The Greatest bond, and several others that are currently in the works. King Louis XIV's quest for immortality leads him to capture and steal a mermaid's life force, a move that is further complicated by his illegitimate daughter's discovery of the creature.During his 19 years at 20th Century Fox Films, the former executive pioneered the company’s early launch of faith and family-friendly programming and marketing in the domestic operations, sales, and home entertainment departments. Utilizing his analytical strengths from his background in international finance, Swart has created some very profitable films including 6 Below with Josh Hartnett. And the mega indie film hit I Can Only Imagine, which grossed over $83 million at the box office.I Can Only Imagine (2018) is an inspiring and unknown true story behind MercyMe's beloved, chart-topping song that brings ultimate hope to so many is a gripping reminder of the power of true forgiveness. With these films, he created a new market for the ever-shifting distribution space for competitive smaller studios. This third-party distribution model started with Lionsgate and then grow into MGM relativity, DreamWorks, and Mirror Backs.Currently, Swart serves as producer for the independent South African firm Nthibah Pictures which was formed in 2018 to fund Marketing, P+A, distribution, development, and production with a focus on the international market.Fathom Premieres 6 below: Miracle on the mountain (2017) - An adrenaline seeking snowboarder gets lost in a massive winter storm in the backcountry of the High Sierras where he is pushed to the limits of human endurance and forced to battle his own personal demons as he fights for survival...."Enjoy my epic conversation with Simon Swart.

Once the children were grown and out of the house, she was free to wander up the Appalachian Trail, and this is where her hiking passion became an addiction. She could never get enough. In the years to follow she would complete many East Coast trails ie: FL Trail, Bartram Trail, Benton McKay Trail, Long Trail, Great Eastern Trail, Northville Placid Trail, Foothills Trail, and many others. She enjoyed the gem of the PCT by hiking the John Muir Trail in the High Sierras. In 2011, she began her international hiking. She has completed the Camino de Santiago in Spain. The Coast to Coast in the UK, and her own path from the English Channel to the North Sea, also in UK. She has hiked some trails in Australia and New Zealand. After Michael's ominous parting line to him at the end of the last episode, Matt is pretty sure Michael is taking Sydney up north to murder her, and as we know, he's not actually wrong. He's just going to have a hard time (a) tracking them down to the resort in the High Sierras that they happen to be staying in, and (b) convincing law enforcement that these newlyweds are out of sight for reasons other than that they're having tons of sex. Michael makes a couple of attempts on Sydney's life before Matt gets to the right cabin with the cavalry, but did he make it in time?! As Jo's pregnancy progresses, she is increasingly haunted by visions of Reed, in both her sleeping and waking hours. (Reed is also on Jake's mind, as he attends the police auction where the Pretty Lady is sold with designs on convincing the winning bidder to let him use the vessel for a charter business, just like Reed told Jake he was planning to do.) Jake convinces Jo that she won't have peace until she gets closure on Reed, or whatever spectral version of him remains. When she's not helping Jo find Reed's barely marked grave, Alison whines about Billy's refusal to participate in planning their wedding and general lack of romantic effort since locking her down with his proposal. To reignite the spark, Alison hits upon a scheme guaranteed to make Billy irritable, and he's probably not the only one. Freer than the land of the free, it's our podcast on "Love, Mancini Style"! Her collection of short stories and essays takes listeners on an enchanted journey through Death Valley, the High Sierras, and the Mojave Desert. Aridity and heat lie counterpoint to our Catskills’ seemingly limitless water and endless winters. Like other nature writers of her time — John Burroughs and John Muir among them — Mary Austin deftly describes the natural world in which she is immersed, including its creatures and its characters. Episode 15, “The Nature Singer,” features California-based musical naturalist, environmental activist, anti-gun, vegetarian, fire-extinguishing singer, and Christian Scientist, Charles Kellogg (1868-1949). He was raised for several years in the High Sierras by the Native American and Chinese members of his small mountain mining community. Before long Kellogg became renowned, both in vaudeville entertainment and in childhood education, for his ability to imitate the sounds of birds and insects. Always an advocate of nature, and the redwoods in particular, Kellogg toured the nation in the first RV, which he carved from a Redwood tree. Inspired by scientific experiments of the day, Kellogg also began performing his birdsong with a burning flame, claiming to extinguish the fire with his voice. He retired to a hand-carved wood cabin called “The Mushroom,” where he lived until he died in 1949. Welcome to ever ever land…

This season, we have the following big-time guests lined up for you:Gulnur Tumbat – a dear friend of mine, and expert mountaineer. Gulnur, who goes by G, has climbed 6 of the 7 tallest summits in the world, having only Vinson in Antarctica left. She’d be the 1st Turkish women to accomplish this. In G’s episode, we talk training – mental and physical – and in depth about her 7 summits journey, including recapping her most recent summit of Mt. Everest.Andrew Skurka – I got tipped off by Andrew from an article of a man who is inventing a new long-distance route in the High Sierras. I thought to myself, “yeah, this is a guy who knows a thing or two about hiking/backpacking”.  Turns out Andrew made a name for himself doing, super long-hikes (we’re talking 5-7K miles) that no one had documented before. These include the Sea-to-Sea route, including one from Quebec to Washington, the Great Western Loop, and the Alaska Yukon Loop (reminder, Alaska is a large state!). Listen in for the stories, and long-distance hiking tips --- I know 5-7K mile hikers are not a prime audience, but someone who has that many miles will definitely drop a tip or two for us 10 mile hikers.Ryan Branciforte – Ryan and I met a few years back, where I learned about his personal journey in utilizing the tech in our hand to connect us to the wilderness we all play in. I know that feels oxymoronic, using tech to connect to wild places, but his mobile app, Outer Spatial, is helping Parks and Preserves alike stand up their profiles by helping users plan, get alerts, and connect with the people that actually visit the park. It’s a great tool, just getting traction and users!Liz Thomas – Liz!  In researching Liz, her bio mentions that she wrote what others called “the bible of thru-hiking”. I read that, and knew I needed to have her on, and then order the book. Liz has many accomplishments --- triple crown hiker, author, and recently, dubbed the Queen of Urban hiking.  She’s an inspiration, and an energetic, just plain happy guest, and one who is really trying to help people connect to places in the wild, and in their cities, simply by walking. Even if you don’t plan on hiking 100s of miles, she’ll make you want to walk around your local town/parks a bit more.Chase Huntley – I heard Chase talk about public lands, the BLM, and climate change a few years back and have been pinging him non-stop to have a chat. Have you ever been confused by what the BLM does? Do you have strong feelings or interest in how public lands are used? Chase is here to provide the history and some of the ongoing developments towards how public lands – primarily in the West – are being used and what we can do to help. And yours truly, sharing some of my favorite hikes from last season and some on the trail “intermediate expertise” along the way. The Women’s Heritage Sourcebook: Bringing Homesteading to Everyday LifeBy Ashley Moore, Lauren Malloy, and Emma Rollin Moore Intro: Welcome to the number one cookbook podcast, Cookery by the Book with Suzy Chase. She's just a home cook in New York City, sitting at her dining room table, talking to cookbook authors.Emma Rollin Moore: Hello, everyone. My name is Emma Rollin Moore, and I am the author of The Women's Heritage Sourcebook and my two coauthors are Lauren Malloy and Ashley Moore.Suzy Chase: For more Cookery by the Book and to see what recipes I made out of this cookbook, head on over to Cookery by the Book on Instagram. Now, for my quarantine question round, where are you living?Emma Rollin Moore: I'm living in Santa Barbara, California.Suzy Chase: What restaurant are you dreaming of going to after the quarantine?Emma Rollin Moore: I hope this is okay, but I'm actually dreaming of a progressive where I go to get cocktails from this craft cocktail place called Shaker Mill, and then some yuca frites from a cuban restaurant, and then heading to Corazon Cocina in the projects for this like fresh farmer's market salad. See, I even know what I want. A farmer's market salad in an ahi tartare.Suzy Chase: So at home, what dish is getting you through this?Emma Rollin Moore: For us, what gets us through is we have a sourdough pizza night every Friday night, and that was a steady constant before the quarantine. So I really see how important that steady drumbeat of a rhythm is really helpful for our family, especially our kids. They look forward to diving in and helping me make sourdough and coming up with different topping ideas and things like that. So I'd really say that the sourdough pizza specifically is really getting us through.Suzy Chase: Now, on with the show. So given what's going on in the world right now, I think on some level women are feeling inspired to be more self-sufficient. I'm thinking a lot about local ingredients and home-cooked meals. How did the idea of women's heritage come to life, and how did you and your partners meet?Emma Rollin Moore: I absolutely agree with you. I think when entire food systems are shut down and we're asked to stay home, I think we naturally feel inspired to create, especially in the kitchen and in the garden. And for Lauren, Ashley, and myself, we came together creating Women's Heritage with the idea that we're just three momma friends and we actually took a trip with our families to the High Sierras in California a couple of winters back, and we actually caught ourselves in a snow storm. It's kind of funny. We were actually in lockdown then, and I had brought my sourdough bread for everyone to enjoy and Ashley was learning more and more about herbalism and brought some herbal tinctures and Lauren just has this deep knowledge of animal husbandry and so we just started chatting about how we wanted to learn from each other, how I wanted to learn more about the herbs that Ashley was growing and making tinctures from and Lauren wanted to learn more about how to make sourdough bread. Even though I grew up on a dairy farm, I had never kept chickens before so I actually was really interested in learning from Lauren about chicken-keeping. Really the idea of Women's Heritage was born then when we had this idea that when we get back, why don't we just put it out there to our friends and family members? If anyone's interested, let's put a class together, and so our first class was on sourdough bread baking. And I remember we came up with the name, I think in the High Sierras and put an Instagram flash website really quickly together. We put it out there to our friends on Instagram and I want to say an hour or two hours later, the class was sold out.Suzy Chase: Oh, wow.Emma Rollin Moore: And then our next class, we had Ashley do a herbal medicine basket, and Lauren also taught how to milk a cow and then I taught everyone how to make cheese from the cow milk. But along the way, we just started to realize the importance of our community and ourselves, how we were really yearning to connect back to our roots and learn and make and do things altogether with each other and separately too. But really, really the idea of learning from each other.Suzy Chase: Yeah, because what I took away from Women's Heritage is it's more about interdependence than independence.Emma Rollin Moore: Yes, absolutely. I think that's the heart of how I function and it's the heart of how Ashley, Lauren and myself and at the heart of Women's Heritage. It's really about the idea in this fast paced world, I think that sometimes we're told that we can do it all, and I don't think it's about doing it all. It's thinking about, "What are you passionate about? What do you want to bring yourself, your family? How can you connect back to your roots in those ways?" And then also how liberating to know that you don't have to do it all? So maybe you learn how to can, but you say, "Oh God, I don't ever want to can." So then you find a friend who will can for you, or you decide you make it fun and do a canning together. Like you have an apricot tree that's going gangbusters and you decide that you're going to make apricot jam together. I think the idea is learning and creating and making with each other. And then also if you don't have those tools nor do you want to, that you're more informed about making more sustainable choices for yourself and your family. So for example, if growing all your food which that seems daunting for even me, I can't possibly grow all my own food for our family. That would be something that would be overwhelming. So I have a nice little garden, but I also believe in supporting our farmer's market, joining a CSA and just knowing where food comes from.Suzy Chase: What does the term homestead mean to you and to Women's Heritage?Emma Rollin Moore: That's a really good question. I think that for someone who grew up on a dairy farm, which I did, but now lives in the city, I think that homesteading for myself, but also what is also at the heart of Women's Heritage means making things from scratch, growing what you can, finding it fresh from the farmer's market, or joining a CSA. And then also knowing where you can get what you need from others around you, who are also makers and doers. I think that is at the essence of who we are, but it's also at the essence of how I also function too.Suzy Chase: So part of your approach to cooking includes fermentation.Emma Rollin Moore: Yes.Suzy Chase: What are your favorite foods to ferment, and what are the health benefits?Emma Rollin Moore: So, I would say my favorite foods to ferment is definitely kimchi. I love the flavor punch and profile of it. I absolutely love to ferment sourdough bread. There's something so special about taking out a fresh loaf of bread from the oven and enjoying it. And then I've recently gotten into making my own tempeh, and that was something that I was really intimidated by, but there is nothing more enjoyable and taste worthy than making your own tempeh. So right now those are my favorite go-to's. Kefir, the sourdough bread, the Tempe and then I would also say just a really nice kombucha is also really nice when it's in the warmer months and you're wanting something effervescent. And then when it comes to health benefits, I think that the benefits on our gut are so incredible. So we're actually pre-digesting the food. This is a great example for this is sourdough bread. It also can be a detoxifier. For example, oxalic acid and fatty acid can get broken down with fermentation. That's a definite reason why we might soak or sprout grains. There's a nutrient enhancement that happens. So fermentation can add nutrients. Almost all ferments have elevated B vitamins. And I think one of the most profound benefits of fermentation is really the live bacteria themselves. So not every ferment has living bacteria. For example, bread, beer and wine. This is filtered out, chocolate, coffee, canned sauerkraut. But when we eat fermented foods that haven't been heated or processed after fermentation, you're ingesting that healthy bacteria and people buy pills for this at the store.Suzy Chase: You've made all these daunting recipes sound so easy like your homemade ricotta.Emma Rollin Moore: Thank you. Yeah.Suzy Chase: It's just four ingredients. Can you walk us through this recipe?Emma Rollin Moore: Yeah. And I have to say, that's why I am so passionate about the book and the recipes is that I really think it's doable for everyone. And so, I think if you're interested in diving into homesteading make this homemade ricotta because it is so good. And all you're doing is adding three and a half cups of whole milk, a half a cup of heavy cream, and just a half a teaspoon of sea salt. You're just putting all of that in a little sauce pan, heating the milk to 165 degrees, and then you're removing it from the heat and then you add the lemon juice. You stir it once or twice, you let the pot sit undisturbed. Then you line a colander with a few layers of cheese cloth, and then you can eat that yummy cheese that forms because you're just catching those curds really and letting the whey release, and you can eat it right away or you can refrigerate it. It is easier obviously to just go buy that at the store, but it definitely is rewarding.Suzy Chase: So, what's a shrub?Emma Rollin Moore: Oh yeah. That's a really good question. It's a drinking ... Yeah. I get this all the time. People are like, "What is a shrub? Is it something you grow?" But a shrub is a drinking vinegar and it actually includes vinegar, fruits, and sugar. And once the drinking vinegar then is made, and then you can add Bali water, or you can add a bit of alcohol or some bitters to spice it up. It's really one of our first forms of soda. If you wanted to make a shrub, you would really have equal part that vinegar, fruit and sugar.Suzy Chase: Something changes in my brain when I'm in nature whether it be swimming in the ocean, which I really miss right now or touching the bark of the tree in the woods. Talk a bit about slowing down and being present in nature.Emma Rollin Moore: I just think it's good for the soul. It's good for the mind. It's good for the body. It's good for the spirit. Even if you live in the city where you just have a porch, but you're putting your hands in the soil and growing some tomatoes in pots this summer. But there is something even more so about getting outside in nature. And there's definite research and doctors are prescribing forest bathing now. And I really think that's also at the heart of the Women's Heritage Sourcebook, it's just that idea of how nature and getting out and experiencing nature in those ways I think can be really nourishing for our soul. And that we actually really do yearn for that when it's taken away. I think like anything it's about a balance. When we have a lot of technology, I think a really great counterbalance is this idea that we can get outside, even if we're not making and doing but we're just looking from a foraging standpoint to just go on a hike and be able to know what is growing and just breathe and breathe in the air.Suzy Chase: Your hens give you plenty of eggs. I found we've been eating so many eggs during the quarantine. And the other day..Emma Rollin Moore: Yes, we have too.Suzy Chase: It's crazy.Emma Rollin Moore: Yeah.Suzy Chase: So the other day I made your recipe for Mini Herb And Cheese Frittatas on page 189. Can you describe this recipe?Emma Rollin Moore: So, I love this recipe because it's one of those things where it's also something that kids can easily do this at any age. You could decide that you're going to not have the kids crack the eggs, or you can. Once you've whisked the eggs with the milk and the cheese and the herbs and any add on's, just eight to 10 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit, and you have a really lovely egg dish. I'm a really big advocate of eggs and breakfast for dinner. That's savory. It's great to have these on hand, even as snacks.Suzy Chase: Now, for my segment called My Favorite Cookbook. What is your all time favorite cookbook and why?Emma Rollin Moore: This probably gets said a lot, but for me, Alice Waters, The Art of Simple Food. I remember getting that book early on and it's just so much about slow food and knowing where food comes from and cooking fresh seasonal honest ingredients. And it's just inspired me in my life and how I've chosen to cook and raise my family and inspire other people to also cook and to shop at farmer's markets and know where food come from.Suzy Chase: Where can we find you on the web and social media and your store?Emma Rollin Moore: Find us at Women's Heritage on Instagram and it's @Womens_Heritage. And then you can also find our store at Heritage Goods And Supply on Instagram as well. And I would just say that our store really was a product of us teaching classes and having other people teach classes and there's definitely a desire for people that wanted to know where they could get their bread cooking baskets and their herbal supplies.Suzy Chase: So this cookbook shows us how to achieve comfort through self-reliance. Thanks so much, Emma, for coming on Cookery By The Book podcast.Emma Rollin Moore: Thank you so much for having me, Suzy.Outro: Subscribe over on cookerybythebook.com. Description: Yosemite National Park in all of its wonder-- from Cook's Meadow and Glacier Point to hiking the Vernal and Nevada Falls Trails and beyond-- is stunning. However, it wasn’t simply the awesome views, granite walls and falls that stunned our family, but the sheer amount of people immersing themselves in the Yosemite National Park experience. Danielle, Bryan and the girls reminisce about their trip in early May 2019 and offer tips and recommendations for others wanting to visit and avoid crowds. Our Discussion Includes the Following: Why Bryan feels that planning is important when visiting Yosemite (2:45) How we spent our time in Yosemite-- after hitting the “weather lottery” (5:23) Challenges to planning your trip in Yosemite (6:32) How adjusting your expectations may help you enjoy the crowds and camaraderie in Yosemite Valley (7:19) Arriving in the park and getting our bearings at the Visitor Center (10:00) Court settlement - original names of several iconic lodging are reinstated (13:00) Mirror Lake (14:15) Advantage of visiting in spring - waterfalls (15:09) Unforgettable Vernal-Nevada Falls - strenuous, popular hike that is worth testing the limits of your kids! (47:31) Something different that Danielle wants to do on the next visit to Yosemite (48:36) Lottery for the backcountry campsites to visit the High Sierras (49:16) Our youngest daughter’s take on our Yosemite trip- Night skies, Vernal & Nevada Falls a rainbow joke, Tom Bopp  (52:18) The “Firefall” around February (57:14) Our oldest daughter shares her favorite memories - bike riding to Happy Isles, waterfall hike, waterfall joke, Giant Sequoia facts (59:42) Tips for your Travels: Talk to a ranger at the Visitor Center when you first arrive at Yosemite. There is 20 minute parking at the Camp Store. Plan around the Yosemite Half Marathon if you wish to participate or avoid it. In cooler months, you may want to pay up for a heated tent at Camp Curry. It gets chilly. Plan ahead! It will likely be crowded as there seems to be no true “shoulder season” in Yosemite. Many of the waterfalls do not flow year-round, so if that is something you would like to see, plan to visit in spring. Bring plenty of water, especially on a hike like Vernal & Nevada Falls in warm weather. Check the park newspaper for special programs in Yosemite. You need a permit for back-country camping in the High Sierras. Don’t touch the large pinecones in Mariposa Grove! They will stain your clothes. Don’t forget your camera for some gorgeous and dramatic natural photos. In Yosemite, whenever you see those information signs, there is a photo opp! When traveling with family, schedule a day of solo photography ahead of time. Use a hotel shower cap to protect your camera from the rain in a pinch. Use what you have on hand, like a wallet or boulder, if a tripod isn’t available to you. Always backup your photos Always check the weather! If you love Landscape Photography and Storytelling you are going to LOVE this podcast with Joshua Cripps! The audio quality from Josh gets better as the podcast goes along as he gets closer to his mic on his end. Less little echo and much louder. Best in segment two starting at 36:26. So after an intro and admittedly a little too much joking around we get into Josh's travels, workshops and all the world traveling he has done. 8:31 We ask him where he would consider his top three favorite Landscape Photography locations. One of them quickly becomes one of our top five bucket list locations! In order of his mentioning them, China, New Zealand's Fiordland National Park area & the High Sierras of California. Follow Kyle Oberman here the instagrammer that is living in China and has some great images of not oft traveled locations in China: https://www.instagram.com/kyleobermann/ 28:30 Then we get the What Would Joshua Cripps Do method of Composing an image where you consider the compositional balance and then you consider the emotion you are feeling. Then you convey that emotion with your shutter choice. Josh gets to an awesome location, gets his camera out and thinks "What am I trying to convey? What is speaking to me? Is there motion in the scene? How Do I feel?" and with all this he gets his portfolio worthy shot. 36:26 In the second segment, Josh shares with us the craziest world travel story I may have ever heard! Let's just say that there are tiny ponies involved in a decision only 20-year-olds would think to do. Oh to be 20-something again! On the night of the 24th of February, 1978, a group of five young men attended a college basketball game at California State University. The group of men had been anticipating their Special Olympic basketball tournament that was scheduled for the very next night in Sacramento, which they had been looking forward to for months. After the game, they traveled 70 miles in the opposite direction for no apparent reason, and 4 of the men were found dead months later. One of the men is still missing to this day.WTF Moments:Over 30 miles outside of Oroville and 70 miles from Chico, Jack Madruga's car came to rest empty on a desolate road in the High Sierras, stopping just on the snow line at 4,400 feet in elevation. The car’s underside was completely undamaged. Investigators concluded that the driver had either used astonishing care and precision, or else the knew the road extremely well – Jack, hated the cold, and according to his parents, would never drive it in the snow or unfamiliar territory. In fact, none of the boys aside from Mathias, cared for camping or other outdoor activities. That same night, a man named Joseph Shones was driving along the same route and begin to have a f*cking heart attack. He laid down on his backseat and kept his car running to keep warm - After several hours, the gas ran out and he thought he had seen a group of men and a woman with a baby, walking in the light of another vehicle’s headlights. Shone's claimed he called out for help and the lights disappeared and everything had gone quiet. Once he had rested for some time, he walked eight miles down to get help at a place he had been drinking at earlier in the day called Mountain House, passing a strange abandoned blue-green colored car along the way.Ted Weiher’s body was discovered first in an abandoned cabin. He was laying on a bed with eight sheets wrapped around him, including his head. The autopsy showed that he had died of a combination of starvation and hypothermia. He had lost nearly half his body weight, and the growth of his beard suggested he had lived as long as 13 weeks from when he had last shaved. Ted’s autopsy showed that Ted died of hypothermia and starvation, despite there being a propane tank and over a years’ worth of canned food in and near the trailer. The cans of food required a P-38 can-opener, a very specific can-opener to the military and army - Gary Mathias and Jack Madruga were the only ones in the group with military experience. In the trailer, there was a gold watch found on a side table that did not belong to anyone in the group.Jack Madruga and Bill Sterling’s body were found on opposite sides of the road 11.4 miles from where the car had been. The former's body had been partially consumed by scavenging animals; only bones remained of the latter, scattered over a small area. Two days after the discovery of Jack and Bill, as part of one of the other search parties, Jack Huett's father insisted on helping the police in the search, since his son was the last 2 that still hadn’t been found. During the search he discovered his son’s blue jean jacket in the snow and when he ran to pick it up, a back bone fell out of the jacket. His shoes and jeans nearby helped identify the body. Yikes.Gary Mathias was never found. He has been missing for over 41 years, and this case remains unsolved to this day.Check out our website!Contact us!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/join/cocktailsandconspiracies?)

February 13th, just this last week, flight 5763 took off from the Orange County Airport on its way to Seattle.  It didn't quite make it there, because over the High Sierras, it hit what you might refer to as a little bit of turbulence.  One of the passengers reported that, along with the flight attendant, the drink cart hit the ceiling of the aircraft.  Another passenger said that the plane did not one but two nosedives, sort of ninety degrees down.  Just imagine being at 34,000 feet, cruising altitude, having your plane, that's sailing through the air, immediately doing a ninety degree nosedive, and the flight attendant next to you in the air.  Five people were injured.  The plane had to land in Reno and didn't make it to Seattle because five people had to be hospitalized. If you've ever been in a situation of turbulence, either in an airplane or in life, you know that you don't just have thoughts in your head that affect the way that you interact with that situation.  Your whole body gets into it, doesn't it?  If you were to take your pulse, it would be elevated, would it not?  Your palms might be a little bit sweaty.  You might be yelling things uncontrollably.  My parents were in a turbulent situation in an aircraft and somebody grabbed the hands of the people next to them and started praying "The Lord's Prayer."...

Matthew 2:1-12 Introduction to Scripture: Today we are celebrating Epiphany, a day when something new was revealed. As we read this familiar text today, let us look for something to be revealed that we had not seen before. There is a rabbinical story that can help us in this task. “It is the story of the burning bush in the Hebrew Scriptures in which Moses sees a bush on fire, but the bush is not consumed. The rabbis say that the important thing about this story is not that the bush is burning but that Moses notices, because every bush is burning, every bush is on fire with the divine presence, everything in the universe shines because God is at the heart of it. So it is in our epiphany story. It is a story that invites us to open our eyes to the light that is everywhere.” 1 In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, 2asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star at its rising, and have come to pay him homage.” 3When King Herod heard this, he was frightened, and all Jerusalem with him; 4and calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. 5They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it has been written by the prophet: 6‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.’” 7Then Herod secretly called for the wise men and learned from them the exact time when the star had appeared. 8Then he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, “Go and search diligently for the child; and when you have found him, bring me word so that I may also go and pay him homage.” 9When they had heard the king, they set out; and there, ahead of them, went the star that they had seen at its rising, until it stopped over the place where the child was. 10When they saw that the star had stopped, they were overwhelmed with joy. 11On entering the house, they saw the child with Mary his mother; and they knelt down and paid him homage. Then, opening their treasure chests, they offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 12And having been warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they left for their own country by another road. For a number of years now, my bucket list of places to visit is Yosemite National Park. 2017 looks to be that year. My son, Stephen, heard of our plans and gifted me with a book of John Muir’s wilderness essays. Muir was a 19th century naturalist, His activism not only helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley but played a part in it becoming a national park. Among the essays in the book is one titled, “A Near View of the High Sierra.” There was something about the Yosemite Valley and the High Sierra that fed his soul. It just so happened that it was Epiphany day as I was reading about his travels in the High Sierras. Epiphany day is the day we as Christians celebrate the travels of the Magi to Bethlehem to pay homage to the new born king. As I enjoyed Muir’s gift for prose, I wondered if one of the magi had had the same gift for prose as Muir did and had recorded his or her travels, what a gift that would be to those of us who also in a vicarious way long to have the same experience as those magi did almost 2,000 years ago. What story would the Magi have told? How would they have described their journey? How did they explain to skeptics their willingness to invest more than two years of their lives and a significant amount of money to follow a star that supposedly might lead to a new king. To invest this amount of time and capital, there had to be something special about that star that they were following. As I was thinking about Muir’s devotion to the wilderness that gave him a focus for his life, and as I was contemplating what it might have been like for the Magi to devote several years of their lives to follow a star, I came across a poem by William Stafford that I believe gives voice to what it means to devote one’s life to a specific purpose. Stafford’s poem “The Way It Is’ takes a poetic image that William Blake used, that of a golden string, and builds upon it. Blake said this of the golden string, "I give you the end of a golden string, Only wind it into a ball, It will lead in at Heaven's gate Built in Jerusalem's wall." Stafford takers that thought and writes, “There’s a thread you follow. It goes among things that change. But it doesn’t change. People wonder about what you are pursuing. You have to explain about the thread. But it is hard for others to see. While you hold it you can’t get lost. Tragedies happen; people get hurt or die; and you suffer and get old. Nothing you do can stop time’s unfolding. You don’t ever let go of the thread.” For Muir, something in the wilds of the High Sierra’s contained that golden thread. Clearly when one read his writings, one can tell that Muir is never lost for he is always holding on to that thread that binds him to heaven’s gate. For the magi, there was something about that star that became for them the golden thread. I am sure that the Magi had a difficult time trying to make people understand what it was that they were pursuing. Just like we wonder what they were pursuing, surely people then wondered just as well. Why would the Magi give up so much of their life to follow this star? In many ways, many of us here in this room are on a similar journey as that of the Magi. We caught a glimpse of that vision of what could be when the Christ truly enters our world and we became intrigued enough to follow that vision to see where it would take us. As we journeyed, as we followed that star, the vision unfolded before us was one that declared that all people, regardless of nationality, race, gender, sexual identity, etc..etc., that all people are children of God. The golden thread revealed to us that all creation is a gift to be cherished. Sadly as the biblical story suggests, not all people catch this vision, not all people grab hold of that golden thread. In the gospel story, we read of two groups of people that missed out of heaven for lack of eyes to see what was right before them. One group, those with power, this group was embodied by that of King Herod. Herod had no interest in any new King to come. He was all about holding onto the power that he held. Power had become his god. He could not imagine giving up any of his power or riches to consider joining the magi on their quest, even if, as Blake writes, it would lead him to heaven’s gate. The other group was the wise people of that day. The magi inquired of them as to where they might find the Christ, the light of the world. The wise people of that day, the chief priests and scribes, knew scripture and were able to tell the magi where to find the Christ. It is interesting to note that the magi went where the wise ones had told them, but not a single learned person went with them. It makes me wonder why not. What about their wisdom kept them from seeing the Christ in their midst? What about our wisdom keeps us from seeing the Christ that is in our midst? What is it about our understanding of faith that keeps us from grasping hold of that golden thread that will lead us to Heaven’s gate? Just as Muir saw in the wilds of the High Sierras something magical that fed his soul, and just as the Magi caught a glimpse of a star that not only held their gaze but beckoned them to leave the comfort of home and venture into the unknown, as we enter this season of Epiphany, we too are being called to grab hold of that golden thread that will lead us to Heaven’s gate. Granted, that thread may take us places that are out of our comfort zone. That thread may very well challenge us to love those whom others say not to love, or it may challenge us welcome those whom others exclude. That thread may very well pull us to give more of ourselves, our time, and our treasures than we had earlier planned. Despite the challenges that thread will lead us to Heaven’ gate if we are willing to follow it. The question is now before us. Will we be like Herod, and miss out on what could be because we are afraid to give up our power? Or, will we be like the learned ones of that day, full of knowledge but unwilling to step out in faith to truly place our trust in the truth. If we follow in the way of Herod and the learned ones of that day, we may very well miss out on what God is doing in our midst. But if we are willing to let go of those things and to grab hold of that “golden thread” that is before us, Heaven’s gate is waiting. The choice is ours to make. Will we hold on to it or not. ___________________________________________________________ 1From Day1.org, “The Light Within All Life,” by The Rev. Dr. John Philip Newell, January 06, 2013

"The Legend of Snowshoe Thompson" is one of the most enduring tales of the American West. A Norwegian immigrant, Thompson tried his hand at gold mining during the gold rush in California and Nevada but when he married, he went to work delivering mail through the snowed in passes of the Sierra Mountains of Eastern California and Western Nevada, fashioning "snowshoes" mounted on long pieces of oak, and becoming an expert at cross country and downhill skiing. For twenty years he brought desperately needed food, and supplies to stranded towns, sometimes saving lives in the process. His story and the perils he faced are the stuff of legend.
