It was marked by several major religious observances. In 44 BC, it became notorious as the date of the assassination of Julius Caesar, which made the Ides of March a turning point in Roman history. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 02:05 UTC on Saturday, 16 March 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Ides of March on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Joanna Standard.

Welcome to January 1st, 2023 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate a gruesome drink and a fresh start.  If you're looking for a “hair of the dog” that bit you during last night's reveling, consider the Bloody Mary. It's become a brunch staple, but how did this drink get such a gruesome name? Many people assume it's because of Mary Tudor, Henry VIII's first daughter. But the widely accepted story is that a Paris bartender in the 1920s created a cocktail of tomato juice and vodka. One of the patrons loved the drink and suggested the name "Bloody Mary” because it reminded him of a Chicago bar called Bucket of Blood Club, and a girl named Mary who worked there. On National Bloody Mary Day celebrate with this classic drink that helps repair the most ghoulish hangover. New Year's Day is one of the most recognized holidays around the world. Though it has been celebrated for thousands of years, the exact beginning of a new year has gone through many changes. In ancient Rome, the calendar started with Martius or March and only had ten months. January and February were added later and the twelve month Julian calendar was eventually adopted. In ancient Babylon, new year's resolutions were about paying back debts and returning borrowed stuff. If that is on your list it's a great start. As the new year begins, may we follow the advice of Ralph Waldo Emerson who said, “Write it on your heart that every day is the best day in the year.” We hope you will join us as we find new reasons to celebrate together.  I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day!  Learn more about your ad choices.

A homenagem, porém, tinha outra motivação.

The encounter between the self and the other as understood through Jean Laplanche’s psychoanalytic theory set in the Hegelian dialectic will be explored using three instances of the word threshold in Shakespeare. Two instances occur in Coriolanus – between Virgilia and Martius and between Aufidius and Martius – and one occurs in The Merchant of Venice – between Antonio and Shylock. The circulation of libido across the threshold, and its distortion into the death-drive and the drive for the accumulation of profit will be explored in these scenes. The role of the threshold as the site for the implantation of enigmatic signifiers or the violent intromission of trauma will be explored for its role in the distortion of libido into death-drive and profit-drive. This is a preliminary experiment (for me) in thinking through Laplanchian psychoanalysis as theory in conversation with Marxism and set in the dialectic. Bio: Christian Smith is a Teaching Fellow in the Department of English and Comparative Literary Studies at the University of Warwick. His doctoral research looked at the influence that Shakespeare had on Marx, Freud and the Frankfurt School Critical Theorists. In his postdoctoral work, he is investigating the possibility that the ground through this influence traveled may have been the historical development of the dialectic. This talk was part of a one-day conference 'Shakespearean Thresholds' organised by KiSSiT (Kingston Shakespeare Seminar in Theory) held at the Rose Theatre, Kingston on April 2, 2016. The session was chaired by Ildiko Solti. See video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pr8kBXCK0Ks
