As Brutus waits for Cassius in the rebel camp, he learns from Lucilius that Cassius is not as friendly as he once was. As soon as he arrives, Cassius accuses Brutus of wronging him. Not wanting their soldiers to see them fighting, they withdraw into Brutus's tent to carry out their argument in private. It all comes to an end when Cassius offers his dagger to Brutus and bares his chest for Brutus to kill him. Once they make their peace, Brutus tells Cassius that his wife, Portia, has killed herself by swallowing hot coals. Cassius is shocked and saddened but Brutus insists that they focus on their battle plans. Cassius suggests they wait for Antony and Octavius' armies to exhaust themselves reaching them where they are now but Brutus disagrees, saying they should meet their enemy half way, at Philippi. Cassius gives in. Once alone, Brutus is visited by Caesar's ghost, who tells him they will meet again at Philippi. Brutus wakes his guards but they all say they didn't see anything. He sends word to Cassius to be ready to march ahead of him the next morning. **** The PLAY ON PODCAST SERIES, “JULIUS CAESAR”, was written by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE and translated into modern English verse by SHISHIR KURUP. Caesar approaches the Temple, noting that the “Ides of March” have come. He refuses to read Artemidorus's warning. Cassius worries their plot has been discovered but Brutus reassures him. As they approach the Temple, Metellus Cimber pleads with Caesar to return her brother, Publius, from banishment. Caesar refuses. Once inside the Temple, the conspirators surround Caesar and stab him to death, proclaiming “Tyranny is dead!” Antony's servant enters and reports that Antony has fled to his house. Brutus invites the conspirators to bathe their hands in Caesar's blood. As a crowd assembles outside the Temple, Antony's servant returns to ask for safe passage for Antony to speak with the assassins. Brutus grants his request. Antony enters and offers his life unless they can justify their actions. Brutus tells him that all will be explained once they've quelled the crowd. Antony shakes hands with each of the conspirators and requests permission to speak at Caesar's funeral. Cassius is reluctant but Brutus agrees, making Antony promise not to speak poorly about them. Once alone with Caesar's body, Antony mourns and vows revenge. Octavius's guard enters to give word that Octavius is on his way to the city. Antony tells him to report to Octavius about what's happened and to warn him not to arrive until they see how things unfold. **** The PLAY ON PODCAST SERIES, “JULIUS CAESAR”, was written by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE and translated into modern English verse by SHISHIR KURUP. Brutus paces in his study, unable to sleep. His wife, Portia, enters and begs him to tell her why he's so troubled. He does his best to comfort her and tells her he'll explain everything later. Caius Ligarius, an ailing Senator, enters to meet with Brutus, who convinces him to join the assassination plot. Caesar has a hard night as well. His wife, Calphurnia, tells him of terrible dreams she's been having about his murder and says they are omens for Caesar not to go out of the house. When Decius arrives to accompany Caesar to the Temple, Caesar explains that he is staying home on account of Calphurnia's dreams. Decius tells him that the blood in Calphurnia's dreams is a symbol of the new life that Caesar gives his followers and that he will be seen as a coward if he stays home. Caesar changes his mind and leaves with Decius and the rest of the conspirators. Elsewhere, a poet and prophet named Artemidorus writes a letter to Caesar warning him to beware, naming all the traitors who are out to get him. He vows to hand Caesar his letter when he passes by. Outside the Temple, Portia frets over the conspiracy that her husband has confided to her. She tells Lucius to go into the Temple and report back to her about what's going on. When the Soothsayer passes, Portia grills her to find out what she's going to tell Caesar. The Soothsayer responds that she is only going to tell Caesar to befriend himself and beware of others. **** The PLAY ON PODCAST SERIES, “JULIUS CAESAR”, was written by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE and translated into modern English verse by SHISHIR KURUP. Caska and Cicero meet on a stormy night. Caska trembles at the omens he's seen until Cassius arrives and dispels his fears with the encouragement that they're not alone in fighting tyranny. Cinna nervously joins them, expressing her hope that Brutus will join their conspiracy. Cassius reassures her that Brutus is on board. Later that night, Brutus ruminates at home on the possibility of killing Caesar, deciding that murder is the only way to stop him. His servant, Lucius, announces the arrival of cloaked guests. Brutus welcomes them and Cassius introduces the co-conspirators: Trebonius, Decius Brutus, Caska, Cinna and Metellus Cimber. Together, they plan Caesar's assassination. Cassius suggests that they swear an oath but Brutus says oaths aren't necessary because their plan is noble. They all agree not to include Cicero in their plans. Cassius suggests that they also kill Mark Antony but Brutus advises against it, saying they will appear “too bloody” and that Antony won't be a threat once Caesar is dead. When Cassius worries that Caesar won't come to the Temple, Decius offers to bring him to the Temple herself. Cassius says they'll all go to Caesar's house together instead. Metellus suggests that they include Caius Ligarius in their plans and Brutus agrees, then sends everyone on their way, telling them all to freshen up so their looks won't betray their purposes. **** The PLAY ON PODCAST SERIES, “JULIUS CAESAR”, was written by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE and translated into modern English verse by SHISHIR KURUP. Activists assemble outside the Stadium to celebrate Caesar when they're interrupted by Flavius and Murellus, who challenge them to honor not just one man but all the people who helped in the Movement. Once the group breaks up and moves on, Flavius tells Murellus to help him take down all the posters celebrating Caesar. Inside the stadium, Caesar and his entourage–including his closest friend, Antony, and his wife, Calphurnia–are enjoying the thrills of a drag race when they're interrupted by an old woman who warns Caesar to beware the “Ides of March”. Caesar dismisses the woman and tells his entourage to enjoy the race with him. Cassius and Brutus stay behind and share their honest feelings about Caesar. Cassius tells Brutus he thinks Caesar is weak, spurring Brutus to confess he's uneasy with the way things are going in Rome. As they return from the race, Caesar sees the two men talking and tells Antony he thinks Cassius is dangerous. Brutus pulls Caska aside and asks him for details about what took place at the race. Caska describes how Caesar refused the crown three times when it was offered to him, further endearing him to the crowd. Caska also describes how Caesar “fell down” and foamed at the mouth. Brutus suggests that Caesar must have the “falling sickness” (epilepsy). Cassius says Caesar is not like them. Caska goes on to describe how Flavius and Murellus were punished for pulling down placards and posters celebrating Caesar, warning Cassius and Brutus to watch how they treat him. After Brutus and Caska depart, Cassius muses to himself about how easily Brutus can be manipulated. **** The PLAY ON PODCAST SERIES, “JULIUS CAESAR”, was written by WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE and translated into modern English verse by SHISHIR KURUP. We believe all neighborhoods deserve to be covered in a meaningful way.We amplify positive stories, cover development and local school council meetings and serve as watchdogs in neighborhoods often ostracized by traditional news media.Ground-level coverageOur neighborhood-based reporters don't parachute in once to cover a story. They are in the neighborhoods they cover every day building relationships over time with neighbors. We believe this ground-level approach not only builds community but leads to a more accurate portrayal of a neighborhood.Stories that matter to you — every daySince our launch five years ago, we've published more than 25,000 stories from the neighborhoods, covered hundreds of community meetings and send daily and neighborhood newsletters to more than 130,000 Chicagoans. We've built this loyalty by proving to folks we are not only covering their neighborhoods, we are a part of them. Some of us have internalized the national media's narrative of a broken Chicago. We aim to change that by celebrating our neighborhoods and chronicling the resilience of the people who fight every day to make Chicago a better place for all.
Legendy playwright August Wilson – considered one of the most important Black voices in theater – wrote the story of his life in the play How I Learned What I Learned. Today, that script is coming to life in a one-man show at the Broadway Playhouse in Water Tower Place. And Chicago-bred actor Harry Lennix (The Blacklist, Matrix Reloaded) is stepping into the role of August Wilson himself. How I Learned What I Learned is on a limited run until May 5, and Reset sits down with the actor for more on what audiences can expect. For a full archive of Reset interviews, head over to wbez.org/reset.
On this Chicago-themed episode, Rob and J.R. talk to the actor-director duo about staging August Wilson's solo play, 'How I Learned What I Learned,' and check in with arts journalist Mike Davis.
Show SummaryOn today's episode, I'm having a conversation with Frederick Marx, an internationally acclaimed Oscar and Emmy nominated filmmaker with over 40 years in the film industry. We have a conversation about a recent project, a series of five films called Veterans Journey Home, which features the stories of veterans who are working to transition to post-military life and the insights of professionals that support themAbout Today's GuestFrederick Marx is an internationally acclaimed, Oscar and Emmy nominated director/writer with 40 years in the film business. He was named a Chicago Tribune Artist of the Year, a Guggenheim Fellow, and a recipient of a Robert F. Kennedy Special Achievement Award. His film HOOP DREAMS played in hundreds of theatres nationwide after winning the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and was the first documentary ever chosen to close the New York Film Festival. It was on over 100 “Ten Best” lists nationwide and was named Best Film of the Year by critics Roger Ebert, Gene Siskel, Gene Shalit, and Ken Turran and by the Chicago Film Critics Association. Ebert also named it Best Film of the Decade. It is one of the highest grossing non-musical documentaries in United States history. It has won numerous prestigious awards, including an Academy Nomination (Best Editing), Producer's Guild, Editor's Guild (ACE), Peabody Awards, the Prix Italia (Europe's top documentary prize) and The National Society of Film Critics Award. The New York, Boston, LA, and San Francisco Film Critics all chose it as Best Documentary, 1994. Utne Reader named it one of 150 of humanity's “essential works,” and the Library of Congress recently added it to its prestigious National Film Registry, and the International Documentary Association named it “The Best Documentary of All Time.” HOOP DREAMS (1994) is the film that first interested Marx in the welfare of teenage boys. BOYS TO MEN? (2004) distributed by Media Education Foundation takes that as its central theme. RITES OF PASSAGE: MENTORING THE FUTURE is the culmination, offering solutions. In 1993, Marx received an Emmy nomination for HIGHER GOALS (1992) for Best Daytime Children's Special. Producer, Director, and Writer for this national PBS Special, Marx directed Tim Meadows of “Saturday Night Live” fame. Accompanied by a curriculum guide, the program was later distributed for free to over 4,200 inner city schools nationwide. THE UNSPOKEN (1999), Marx's first feature film, features stellar performances from Russian star Sergei Shnirev of the famed Moscow Art Theatre, and Harry Lennix, most known for GET ON THE BUS, BOB ROBERTS, TITUS, ER, and MATRIX. A hobbyist songwriter, in 1991 Marx recorded a number of his songs collectively known as ROLLING STEEL. Two of those 11 songs are used over THE UNSPOKEN tail credits and one is used in BOYS TO MEN?. THE UNSPOKEN and ROLLING STEEL are available through this website. Having worked for a time as an English and creative writing teacher, Marx began his movie career as a film critic, and has worked both as a film distributor and exhibitor. He has also traveled extensively. He's lived in Germany, China, and Hungary. He's traveled repeatedly through Western and Eastern Europe, North Africa and Himalayan India. With a B.A. in Political Science and an MFA in filmmaking, Marx has coupled his formal education with a natural gift for languages, speaking German and some Mandarin-Chinese. His interest in languages and foreign cultures is reflected in PBS' international human rights program OUT OF THE SILENCE (1991), the widely acclaimed personal essay DREAMS FROM CHINA (1989), and Learning Channel's SAVING THE SPHINX (1997). He consulted on Iranian-Kurdish director Bahman Ghobadi's feature TURTLES CAN FLY (2004) and was a teacher of renowned Thai feature filmmaker Apichatpong Weerasethakul. Three of Marx's films premiered at the New York Film Festival. His films are distributed throughout the web, on Amazon, and elsewhere. Having dedicated his life to the making and promotion of independent films, Marx, a true maverick in the increasingly commercialized world of “independent cinema,” continues to provide a voice of artistic and social integrity. He repeatedly returns to work with disadvantaged and misunderstood communities: people of color, abused children, the working poor, welfare recipients, prisoners, the elderly, and “at risk” youth. He brings a passion for appreciating multiculturalism and an urgent empathy for the sufferings of the disadvantaged to every subject he tackles. As his mission statement indicates (“Bearing witness, creating change”), his is a voice strong and clear, and profoundly human. Harry is an award winning actor from film, TV and Broadway. We have alot of fun talking about the 10-year run of "The Blacklist," his incredibly interesting analogy on why his approach to acting is the same as the way old school NBA players approached their job. Hear why Harry chose acting over going into the priesthood, and why actors need to understand acting is a craft, not necessarily an art. Harry gives us a very cool insider's look at how the hit NBC show "Blacklist" is shot and how involved he and the lead, James Spader are in development of storylines and of their characters and more.

Gina Prince-Bythewood looked at her first film as a When Harry Met Sally... type of story that followed a pair of young people – Monica and Quincy – as they both worked on furthering their basketball careers. The film was supported by The Sundance Institute and Spike Lee came on as an executive producer to help get it made. We're glad everything came together for this film because it's wonderful. Join us – Pete Wright and Andy Nelson – as we kick off a new series about Sports with Prince-Bythewood's 2000 film Love & Basketball. It's easy to fall for Love & Basketball. Prince-Bythewood followed through on her When Harry Met Sally... story perfectly. We meet Monica and Quincy as new neighbors and instantly fall for them as friends. The fact that they develop a romantic relationship over time works, but only because we buy that friendship so strongly. Small details, like him sneaking over to sleep on her floor to get away from his fighting parents, highlight so perfectly moments that Prince-Bythewood captures to help us buy into this. It helps that she cast Sanaa Lathan and Omar Epps, two incredibly beautiful and charismatic actors, to play the parts as well. They play the roles well, both as basketball players and as friends who become romantically involved. They're perfect. Of course the rest of the cast works just as well – Alfre Woodard, Harry Lennix, Dennis Haysbert, and Debbi Morgan play the parents and they all bring something to the table. The child versions of our leads are great. And the basketball is all great. It's a film that deals with the challenges of relationships when success changes hands from one to the other. It looks at the way women and men are treated in sports differently. There's the theme of infidelity and how it's used in relationships and destroys them. And there are powerful elements looking at parents and their children and how they relate. It's a strong way to kick off this series. We have a great time talking about it so check it out then tune in. The Next Reel – when the movie ends, our conversation begins! We had no idea that William Morrison was born Joseph Samachson on October 13, 1906, in Trenton, New Jersey, the son of Russian Jewish parents. This guy has an incredible bio. He graduated fromRutgers University, then earned a Ph.D. in chemistry fromYaleat the age of 23. He was an assistant professor at the College of Medicine, at the University of Illinois. He also headed a laboratory in metabolic research at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Chicago. Samachson worked as aresearch chemistfor theAmerican Molasses Companyuntil 1938, leaving to become a "freelance technical writer".Then in 1941 his first short sci-fi story was released. Writing as William Morrison, for reasons unknown, "Bad Medicine"appeared in Thrilling Wonder Stories magazine in February 1941. He would go on to write about 80 short sci-fi stories over the next 17 years. If that's not enough, he started writing for DC Comics sometime around 1942. Contributing to stories for both Batman and Superman, he even created a character of his own. That character would appear in the 4-hour epic, Zach Snyder's Justice League released in 2021. Played by veteran Hollywood actor Harry Lennix, the character Samachson created 66 years earlier appeared on the big screen. John Johns, aka Martian Manhunter is a shapeshifter stranded on Earth originally from Mars. Martian Manhunter first appeared in the November 1955 issue #225 of Detective Comics. A copy of issue #225 sold 5 years ago for an amazing $120,000! You can find a copy on eBay right now at the bargain Buy It Now Price for only $34,995. Joseph Samachson also found time to write scripts for a science fiction television series that aired on the DuMont Television Network. Captain Video and His Video Rangers aired from 1949 to 1955. If you're curious you can watch several full-length episodes on YouTube.Samachson received special thanks credits in Zach Snyder's Justice League and The Lego Batman movie. A legendary sci-fi writer himself, Frederik Pohl once remarked that Samachson was "one of the most shamefully neglected writers in the history of science fiction." That's high praise.Samachson died of complications from Parkinson's diseaseon June 2, 1980 in Chicago.Xhanph was the fully accredited ambassador from Gfun, and Earth's first visitor from outer space.History and the amenities called for a tremendousreception.
