Using mechanical options as a way to prime/ripen the cervix for labor is nothing new. Balloon catheters have been used for labor induction as far back as the 1890s. Embrey and Mollison reinvigorated the method in 1967 using it in combination with extraamniotic prostaglandins. Since then numerous studies have been performed worldwide, mostly using the Foley catheter. Then, in 1990, the double balloon catheter was introduced by Atad; this paved the way for the Cook Balloon. But what is the best way to use a balloon for cervical ripening? Should be a single balloon or a double balloon? If single balloon, does volume of the balloon matter? Should it be used alone or with combination with a second agent? Can it be used safely as an outpatient procedure? In this episode, we will present new data regarding traction vs no-traction for single balloon cervical ripening therapy. This new study was published on March 1, 2024 in Obstetrics and Gynecology (the Green Journal).
Facing the loss of a loved one is a harrowing journey that doesn't pause at the office door, a truth Kate Mollison knows all too well. After her world was shaken by personal tragedy, she encountered the chill of an unsympathetic workplace. Our conversation with Kate uncovers the deep need for workplaces to weave compassion into their fabric, something she passionately advocates for through her initiative "On Tuesdays, We Wear Black." As she shares her story, we explore the stark reality of grief's toll on both employees and employers, revealing the staggering economic losses that result from inadequate support systems. We shed light on the recent legislative changes in Connecticut that recognize the impact of grief and PTSD in workers' compensation, reinforcing the message that the time for change is now. Kate also notes how even in the absence of policy, there are a number of changes we as employers, employees, and members of society can make, such as the language we use, that take little effort but have a large impact. As Kate shares a tender tribute to her late husband, we are gently reminded that talking about grief and death need not be shrouded in discomfort. From a simple pink tie to the broader gestures we make to honor our loved ones, this conversation invites us to embrace these topics with openness and sincerity. We show you how discussing the undiscussable can create spaces for healing and remembrance in every aspect of our lives. Happy Wednesday wherever you're listening from! Ecstatic about these next two episodes, the first of which being my older sister Candace. Being the oldest out of all of us, she constantly dealt with being the litmus test for how the rest of us would be treated. A Brooklynite in the 90s and early 2000's, she moved to charlotte at the age of 14. She details the stark differences between the two, from the actual places to her specific living situations. Candace also cites a high school trip to Australia as her introduction to sustainable development. This led her to Appalachian state and eventually, heavily influenced her approach to cooking. The pandemic was painstakingly difficult for Mollison as it was for countless others, but she used the time to cook nearly everyday. She even began incorporating ingredients grown in her own garden. As some of her dishes began gaining traction on social media, Candace's confidence grew and rightfully so. She is currently entered in the Favorite chef amateur chef competition, run by Carla Hall! All voters can contribute one daily free vote, and more if they do feel. Polls close in a few days, so if you're a fan of anything Candace has ever made, make sure to vote! Recorded 7.18.23

Kent reunites with Cordelia at the Highland Hospital in Oakland, where with a doctor they witness King Lear's awakening and recognition of his youngest daughter. Meanwhile, at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, Regan confesses to Edmund that she fears he is not loyal only to her, but also to her sister. Edmund tries to reassure her, but he is interrupted by Goneril and Albany, who arrive to negotiate on how to proceed with their battle plans. Once Goneril, Regan and Edmund are gone, Edgar slips in, disguised, and delivers a message to Albany to summon him upon their victory. Elsewhere, Edmund takes a moment to contemplate his future, vowing to win the battle and dispense with Albany when the time comes. Later, on Market Street in The Warfield, Edgar finds a place for Gloucester to take refuge as the battle rages. Once he learns that Lear's forces have been defeated, he encourages his father not to lose hope and together, they flee to another refuge. In the Fillmore Auditorium in The Cow Palace, Edmund savors his victory as Lear and Cordelia comfort each other in shackles. Edmund sends them to prison and instructs an army captain to follow his command concerning their fate. Albany arrives to challenge Edmund's authority in dealing with the prisoners, leading to an argument between Edmund, Albany, Goneril, and Regan, who becomes increasingly unwell as the scene progresses. The fight culminates in Albany accusing Edmund and Goneril of treason, vowing to present his proof when the trumpets sound. Edmund accepts the challenge and dares his accuser to approach. AFL field umpire Jacob Mollison joined Gerard to talk about his experience after giving Lance Franklin's 1000th goal the "all-clear" to the goal umpire.
Bathing seductively in her home, Regan uses all her powers of persuasion to delay Oswald's delivery of a message from Goneril to Edmund (and to warn Goneril to back off of Edmund, whose heart she thinks she's won), telling Oswald to kill Gloucester at once if he ever sees him. Meanwhile, Gloucester asks Poor Tom (Edgar) to lead him to the top of the Golden Gate Bridge, where he intends to jump to his death. Edgar tricks his father into thinking he's at the railing of the bridge, and Gloucester, falling forward, faints on level ground. As his father wakes, Edgar takes on a new persona, convincing Gloucester that Poor Tom was a phantom and that Gloucester has miraculously survived his fall, giving him renewed faith and hope. They are interrupted by King Lear, who rides in on a rusted bicycle, railing in fits of madness and clarity at everything he encounters until he recognizes and soothes Gloucester, only to run away again when Cordelia's soldiers spot him. Edgar leads his father from the bridge to a cable car, where Oswald, riding in the back of the cable car, sees them and tries to stab Gloucester to death. He is killed instead by Edgar, who discovers Goneril's letter to Edmund in Oswald's pocket. Father and son flee from the scene as the police approach. Cornwall is gravely injured by a servant trying to defend Gloucester, who has been captured and tortured for aiding King Lear. Gloucester is blinded and cast out of his own home into Golden Gate Park, where he encounters “Poor Tom” (Edgar), who comes to his aid without revealing his true identity as Gloucester's son. The next morning, Goneril receives Edmund in her home and allies herself with him before a bitter feud with her now estranged husband, Albany. They are interrupted by news of Cornwall's death and Gloucester's blinding, which drives a wedge even further between Goneril and Albany. Meanwhile, Kent confers with Lear's gentleman in the French camp at Joaquin Miller Park in Oakland and advances plans with him to further assist the King. Elsewhere in the camp, Cordelia receives news of her father's poor health and sends soldiers to find him and bring him to her for aid and comfort. Lear rails at the raging storm on the cliffs of the Marin Headlands as The Fool and Kent (disguised as Caius) beg him to seek shelter in a nearby shack, where they discover Edgar disguised as “Poor Tom”. Meanwhile, Gloucester confides in Edmund his misgivings about the King's treatment, sharing intelligence he's gathered concerning plots to avenge Lear. Edmund gives this news to Cornwall, who rewards him by making him Earl and vows to take revenge on Edmund's father. Later, Gloucester finds Lear and his companions in the shack and persuades them to take shelter in his basement, where Lear stages a mock trial of his daughters before finally falling asleep. Moments later, Gloucester returns with news of an imminent plot to kill the King, and smuggles them all out of his house into a carriage bound for Dover, where he promises they will be safe. Edgar goes into hiding as “Poor Tom”, a beggar in Golden Gate Park. Lear arrives at Gloucester's mansion to find his servant Caius (Kent) locked in restraints. Furious, he lashes out at Cornwall, who defends his actions, and Regan, who tells him to return to Goneril and ask her forgiveness. As Lear fumes at her, Goneril arrives in the courtyard to the open embrace of her sister. Together, they whittle away at Lear's entourage as a storm approaches, eventually telling him to dismiss all his knights. Lear rails at them and vows revenge before blindly setting out into the storm alone. Caius follows him with The Fool as Cornwall orders Gloucester to shut the doors. Later, as the storm rages in the Marin Headlands, Kent finds Lear's Gentleman and informs him that French troops are secretly gathering in the ports to take advantage of the division between Albany and Cornwall. She urges him to deliver a message to Cordelia on Lear's behalf. The Play On Podcast series KING LEAR, was translated into modern English verse by MARCUS GARDLEY and directed by ERIC TING. Synopsis. The King curses Goneril for her inhospitable treatment and sends Caius (Kent) to find Regan. Back in his car with the Fool, Lear worries about his sanity and the Fool does his best to cheer him up. Later, outside Gloucester's mansion, Edmund gets word from Curan that Cornwall and Regan will soon arrive at his father's house, and that there is likely going to be a war between Cornwall and Albany over their territory. Edmund makes the most of the opportunity by convincing Edgar to flee from the house for his own safety, then pretends he was attacked by his brother for not going along with his plot against their father. He's immediately embraced by Cornwall, who promises to promote him. That evening, Caius arrives at Gloucester's mansion and gets into a fight with Regan's servant, Oswald. Gloucester, Edmund and Cornwall break it up and question Caius, who insults the Duke and all his company with his blunt talk. In return, Cornwall and Regan order that Caius be put in restraints for the rest of the night, despite Gloucester's objection. Once alone, Kent drops his “Caius” disguise and reads a letter he secretly received from Cordelia, in which she says she may be able to resolve the conflict in Lear's kingdom. Synopsis. In the garden outside Gloucester's Fillmore District mansion, a furious Edmund conspires to take from his brother what he feels he deserves from his father. Having set the trap, he drives to a nightclub where he sets up his brother Edgar for a fall from grace. Elsewhere, on an ocean beach outside of Goneril's mansion in outer-Richmond, San Francisco, Goneril instructs her servant, Oswald, to treat her father with disdain when he arrives, in the hope that it will push him to go to Regan's house instead. Inside Goneril's house, the exiled Kent has returned, disguised as a man-servant, Caius, in order to gain access to Lear. When the King arrives on the sundeck of the house, Kent (now Caius) greets him and wins his affection by shaming Oswald for disrespecting him. Soon after, the Fool arrives and berates Lear through thinly veiled humor for disowning Cordelia and giving his power over to his other two daughters. Finally, Goneril enters and greets her father coldly, telling him to get rid of his unruly knights and keep only the older ones who know their place. Lear defends his Knights and lashes out at Goneril, voicing his regret for shunning Cordelia. Synopsis. As a large crowd of invited guests gather in the ballroom of King Lear's home in San Francisco's Fillmore District to hear his much-anticipated announcement regarding his plans for the future of his kingdom, the Earl of Gloucester gossips with Lear's trusted advisor, Kent, about the King's shaky health, which is evident in his plans to split the kingdom among his daughters and their husbands, including his unwed daughter, Cordelia, who will choose to marry either the Duke of Burgundy or the King of France this very evening. Gloucester introduces Kent to his illegitimate son, Edmund, who he describes as well-spoken, but not made of the same stuff as his legitimate son, Edgar. Their conversation is interrupted when the King enters with Cordelia and his two eldest daughters, Goneril and Regan, each accompanied by their husbands, Albany and Cornwall. In lavish fashion, Lear announces his plans to divide his kingdom equally among his three daughters, provided they try to out-do each other in a contest to say which of them loves him the most. Goneril and Regan oblige him with lofty pronouncements of devotion, for which they are rewarded with vast lands and resources. Cordelia, on the other hand, declines to participate in the contest, saying nothing but that she loves her father as a daughter should, no more nor less. In return, Lear disowns Cordelia and splits the kingdom between his two eldest daughters and their husbands. Kent tries to defend Cordelia and is exiled from the kingdom. The Duke of Burgundy abandons his suit of the now disinherited Cordelia. The King of France, however, sees Cordelia for who she is and asks for her hand in marriage, which Lear accepts, vowing never to see his daughter again. Cordelia says goodbye to her sisters and leaves with the King of France. Goneril and Regan linger afterward to marvel at their fortune, and talk privately about their need to ally themselves against their father if he tries to cling to power. With Veteran's Day in view, Dr. Jones speaks with filmmaker John Mollison about what he's learned about character from veteran aviators or, as he says, "old guys and their airplanes." John is the recipient of the SD Governor's Award for History and his documentary films of WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War veterans are made with K-12 audiences in mind. John has produced very effective "educator kits" about these aviators' actions. We also discussed their views on character, courage, and service. For more information about John Mollison's work go to: DFCSociety.org or JohnMollison.com.
This week, our guest is 1987 journalism alum John Mollison. John is the host of "Old Guys and their AirPlanes," an award-winning video series that has been broadcast on PBS. He is also a writer and artist known for his work recreating images of military aircraft. John spoke with student host Sam Schauer earlier this week. Our next podcast will be available on November 19th.
I grew up with immense respect for our servicemen and women and have long believed that their experiences have a lot to teach us—if we would listen. That's why I'm excited to introduce John Mollison, an award-winning artist, and filmmaker who, in his words, "interviews old guys and draws their airplanes." But John's work is so much more. It not only captures stories from some of our nation's greatest heroes but provides opportunities for us to learn from their life experiences so that we might become better husbands, fathers, and leaders. I really enjoyed this conversation and hope you'll be enriched by it as well. A very rare and highly insightful conversation with the worlds foremost fire historian, Stephen J Pyne. We dive deeper into our relationship with fire and touch on our modern day, largely dysfunctional and reductionist, approach. Steve Pyne is an emeritus professor at Arizona State University. He has been at ASU since 1985. In 1986 he joined the charter faculty at ASU West, where he remained for 10 years. He transferred to the School of Life Sciences in 1999. Stephen J Pyne is a HUGELY prodigious writer, he has published 35 books, most of them dealing with fire, including extensive historical fire surveys of America, Australia, Canada, Europe (including Russia), and the Earth. What could be called his magnum opus a 5 book series collectively called Cycles Of Fire, constructs a highly detailed and deeply nuanced history of fire and most uniquely and importantly our relationship to it. His latest book on Fire: A Brief History. Condenses and distills thousands of published pages on fire elegantly in one volume. I knew from the first lecture i heard of Stephen's that I must share his work with you. As someone deeply invested ecology from a 'living' standpoint, Fire was never something I considered or looked into to much depth. But I found Stephen's message of our need to engage and reassess our relationship with fire so resonating that it led me into a rich world that we interact with everyday and know very little about. His Extensive academic work would be impressive on its own before you find that Stephen Pyne spent 15 seasons as a remote forestry fire fighter. Learning and living with fire since the age of 18. This combination of two worlds lends Stephen's words and concepts a depth and subtlety beyond facts and figures, physics and chemistry. Hate it or love it, fire is a part of our world now and forever. A relationship like fire is not easily or wisely ignored. It was an honour and and treat to learn another perspective on this ever present relationship. Be prepared to change what you think about fire. It changed me. My guest for this episode is Toby Hemenway, author of the longstanding favorite book on ecological design Gaia's Garden. His next blockbuster The Permaculture City, was recently released by Chelsea Green. This latest volume, focusing on urban landscapes, forms the basis for the conversation today. We work our way through the book and along the way discuss permaculture as a decision making system, and the importance of what permaculture practitioners have, for so long, called the invisible structures: our social and economic systems. For patreon supporters, stick around after the end of the interview, as there is a piece I cut from the piece for broadcast that I included at the end for you to hear. Before we begin, I'd like to thank everyone who had help to make this show a reality. If not for every one of the listener supporters I wouldn't be able to keep going, as all of this work is made possible by you. If you've thought about giving, do so now. October 2 - 11, 2015 Dave Jacke is teaching a 9 day intensive Forest Garden Design Course at Feathered Pipe Ranch, near Helena Montana. This is the first time in three years this course has been offered in the United States. The all inclusive class allows students to learn how to mimic forest ecosystems that include a number of valuable characteristics including stability and resilience in a changing world. As the recent interviews with Dave this have expressed, you can also expect this course to explore the human side of design including the social and economic elements, as discussed with Toby as part of today's interview. Participants will the opportunity to design multiple forest gardens, including one for the course site, as well as another for the 6th Ward Forest Garden Park, as discussed with Caroline and Jesse during the conversation with them on Social System Design. Find out more at: https://www.insideedgedesign.com/upcoming-events.html Now then, my thoughts at the moment. To me this book and the interview you just heard are vital to changing the conversation about permaculture away from just the landscape and growing food, as these are problems that are technically solved. We know how to raise up plants from seed, cutting, or graft. We understand the techniques to use in a wide variety of situations in any climate, even if that means making modifications to the land through ponds or swales, or creating physical structures such as greenhouses or stone walls as thermal mass. Conventional and organic agriculture have a lot of information for us to pull from, as do the rapidly growing fields of agro-forestry and agro-ecology. Where things go sideways is in reaching a larger audience with these ideas, not just in mainstream culture, but also in the permaculture community at large. The landscape is the focus and gets many of us stuck there. Myself and, as you heard, Toby as well. In the beginning this is the place it all starts. Plants. Animals. Food. Fuel. Fiber. Medicine. They form our materials and techniques and yields. These are all easy to see and engage in. But now, 40 years since the beginning we need to go back and dig through Mollison's big black book of permaculture and remember Chapter 14: Strategies for an Alternative Nation. We need to learn how to build and work in community with one another. Now that the thorny pioneers have blazed a trail into the depths of the jungles, plains, and cities, and there set down roots, we have flourished in the shade of their experience and the work that came before us long enough. Now the specialists can come in. The growers, the builders, the organizers, and the communicators, to fill in the gaps and expand to reach all aspects of human life. We have the potential for permanent human agriculture, now let's work on building that permanent human culture, and retain the aspects of civilization that matter to us. Thankfully we can do so using the same system of design as those who came before us, and show others how to create a different world. We can tell the stories of how what will come can be different from what has been and what is. Together, though climate change and other obstacles may seem insurmountable, we can bring prosperity and abundance to all life on earth. We can get the next story right and, with it, get the future right. I am hopeful for what will happen next, as is a recurring theme in my work as of late on engaging what was once seen as invisible. It was quite an experience to hear what Toby had to say on this subject, given his many years of experience and the place of respect he holds in the community. The Permaculture City is a fundamental resource that I recommend everyone who is listening read. If this interview is your first exposure to permaculture and you liked Toby's perspective get a copy of Gaia's Garden, read it, and then read The Permaculture City. If you're someone who finds their thoughts continually revolving around the land, read The Permaculture City and see the broader scope of decision making that permaculture can help us engage in. For those of you already working on issues of social and economic systems, especially in the urban environment, pick up a copy and know that you are not alone in your work and there are many people stepping out from what was to create a new now. After a short break to wrap up graduate school, today's interview is with Steve Whitman, a permaculture designer and planner from New Hampshire. In addition to all of his work on various planning boards he also runs Resilience Planning & Design, LLC. During our conversation today Steve and I talk about engaging in government and community planning in order to inject more permaculture into the process. This is the beginning of an examination of how to make permaculture a part of the mainstream discussion by including holistic design into city and community development. To change the laws, codes, and ordinances in ways that allow us to have a more active role in what happens where we live. As the population continues to grow and more people live in towns and cities we can bring permaculture to the forefront and get involvement at all levels. Government and planning are some really big picture issues and I know that they can be intimidating, but speaking with Steve we kept things very straight forward. There's plenty of discussion about how planning works, the various ways we can become part of the decision making, and how to bring about change, but this isn't a technical conversation. It's not full of jargon, but, honestly, is probably the most approachable conversation we could have on this complicated subject. I enjoyed talking to Steve and between the two of us we broke this down into something you can get started using today just by making a couple of phone calls. Find out more about Steve and his work at resilienceplanning.net. His door is open if you want to get in touch with him to talk about planning and getting involved in the process so that you can begin having a direct effect on the policies that impact your life, so feel free to reach out to him through his website. If there is anything I can do to help you on your path, let me know. Email: The Permaculture Podcast Of write if you would prefer: The Permaculture Podcast The Permaculture Podcast If you want to get started in changing policies there are a few steps I recommend from my own work in doing this. Throughout this next section I'm going to refer to the government body for a specific region as a municipality. In saying that it is a placeholder for anything from a town, to a city, county, state, province, or even national government. First, contact the municipality you want to work with and ask where you can find copies of the local ordinances. More and more, as part of open records and documentation projects, these are available online, or you may need to request a hard copy. Those are usually at a reasonable price. I think I paid $20 for the most up-to-date version from my township, a fair price given the large page count of this book. It's comparable to Mollison's Designers' Manual in page count. Once you've got this, begin reading through it and get an understanding for what is on record. Check the dates of when certain things were put on the books, that might give you some insight into, as Steve suggested, how and where things changed in your area. Yes the language can seem rather specific and shrouded in legalese sometimes, depending on how things are written, but I've yet to find something that is completely incomprehensible, but if you do have questions feel free to call and ask for assistance in understanding what something means. It's a great way to get to know a code enforcement officer on a first name basis. Next up foster a relationship with the administrative assistant for the municipality, if there is one. I've repeatedly found that people in this position are the gatekeepers to power. Having a good relationship with them can get your passed directly to various officers, or provide insight into where to go next. Finally, start attending board and planning meetings. Use the principle of observation to understand what is happening. Look for places where you can add your voice to the discussion and ask pointed questions. Listen to the responses and consider your suggestions. Weigh in on areas you have expertise and push the edge towards more holistic design. One of my friends is often asked, “How did you get that done?” Their response? “I showed up.” Being present makes all the difference in the world. From here, an update on me and where things are to wrap things up. As of the release of this show I will graduate from grad school with my Master of Science in Park and Resource Management. If all my numbers are right, I will complete this two and a half year process with a 4.0 overall. It's been a long hard road, particularly while raising a family and continuing to produce the show, but the results are worth it. I've learned a plenty that can be applied to the podcast in particular and permaculture education in general. There is lots and lots to do, and my next step is to continue my education and pursue a doctoral program. I'm still researching where to go and what exactly to study, but now is the time if I'm ever going to breath life into The Plan and see it spring forth into the world. Doing so brings me to another crossroads, though not quite like the one last year. I know I'm on the right road for myself, but I am in a place where I need to find a place to live and take care of my children and, as much as I want it to, the podcast as a sole pursuit isn't enough at the moment to do so. The show is financially self sufficient at this point and pays for itself, but I am looking for a full time job to keep myself going while I keep this show and everything else in the air. The website, the podcast, all of that is going to stay on the air, but there will be changes coming in the future, I just don't know what yet. Once things start to settle out, I'll let you know more as I do. Beyond that there are other fun things coming up. June 4 I'm scheduled to record a round table discussion with Charles Eisenstein, Dave Jacke, and Ben Weiss which will come out a few weeks later as a two part (or more) episode. There is also another round table recording scheduled for September, and another road trip to Virginia is in the works to do a one year follow-up with the guests from that event and to add some new interviews to that journey. Plus, in August, I get to go to Canada and be the best man at a dear friend's wedding. I won't be recording anything there, but it will be some good fun. Whatever the future holds, wherever my path leads, I will remain here as a resource for you however I am able. You are not alone on your permaculture journey so contact me, however you would like, if I can help you. Until the next time, take care of earth, yourself, and each other. Donate to The Permaculture Podcast Online: via PayPal Venmo: @permaculturepodcast My guest for this episode is Dave Jacke a designer from Massachusetts and author, along with Eric Toensmeier, of Edible Forest Gardens Volume 1 and 2. Today he joins us to discuss Ecological Culture Design. Dave is a returning guest to the show. You can hear about his background and how he came to do this work in his initial interview. If this is your first time listening to Dave I recommend you start there to get a feel for the level of candor you'll hear in this episode. This is an open and honest conversation about the four components of Ecological Culture Design: Technology Resources Social and Economic Structures Cosmology We discuss how we must include these elements in our designs for permaculture systems. These areas matter because these are the pieces we must work with in order to bring the so-called “Invisible Structures” of permaculture to the forefront. Dave and I end the conversation with a constructive critique on what it means to organize, practice, and teach permaculture. In preparing this episode Dave and I both listened to the audio before it went out on the air and he asked that I correct his statement about Tantric philosophy. In the interview he said, “the perceiver, the perceived and the object of perception are one.” What he meant was “the perceiver, the perceived and the process of perception are one ,” a subtle but big difference. I agree with much of what Dave has to say in this episode. We cannot keep calling the non-landscape portions of our design invisible, or they will remain there, on the outside, away from view. We need to communicate about them differently in order to understand them and make them a part of our larger designs so that what we do can continue long after our ability to maintain or consult on a system is gone. For much the same reason the Designers' Manual only the beginning. Yes, every permaculture designer should have a copy in their library as a reference, and to understand some of the early vision as expressed by Bill Mollison, but in additional to that book we need a large library of materials to reference and cross reference and research to create good designs. With that I would like to see a new edition of the Designers' Manual written every decade or so as an encyclopedia of permaculture that can include more information about what we've learned over the years, but written as a collective cooperative piece by the community that takes the best of what everyone has to offer, and focuses on their areas of specialty, to create a book with multiple perspectives and voices. Get Dave Jacke and Ben Falk to write about formal design, Jude Hobbs and Andrew Millison about permaculture education, Marisha Auerbach and Rachel Kaplan to cover urban permaculture, and Karryn Olson-Ramanujan and Adam Brock on social permaculture. Those are just the names and topics off the top of my head. The Designers' Manual as written by Mollison is over 500 pages. There's room for many authors to contribute to such an effort. If you'd be interested in contributing to something like this, maybe we can get a proposal together and create a new manual for the 21st century. Whatever your permaculture plans, I'm here to help. Donate to The Permaculture Podcast Online: via PayPal Venmo: @permaculturepodcast My guest for this episode is Craig Sponholtz, a permaculture practitioner who operates Watershed Artisans. One of Craig's specialties is in building regenerative earthworks to capture water and restore degraded land, which forms the basis for our conversation today. What I like about this conversation with Craig is the role we have as designers to act as preservers of the land. We can use the design tools presented in permaculture to create solutions that stop erosion with structures built from natural materials that harvest water by slowing it, spreading it, and sinking it, all while keeping that water from cutting through the earth. Craig does this in a way that doesn't disrupt the natural flow of water, but takes the path into account. For all of the avocation for the use of particular technique, this approach takes us back to observing the landscape first, and deciding on what is most appropriate rather than looking for a one-size fits all solution. The strategy of water harvesting leads to a number of techniques. Some that Craig mentioned include check dams, one rock dams, rock mulches, and zuni bowls. In the show notes you'll find a link to a document Craig made, along with Avery Anderson, that explains these techniques in detail, and one other called media luna. I also found a nice piece written by Bill Zeedyk about induced meandering.
