Welcome back to our series on Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing here on The Literary Life Podcast. Our hosts, Angelina Stanford and Thomas Banks, open the episode with some thoughts on disguises and appearance versus reality in Shakespeare. They talk about how the eavesdropping in this play works together with the things not being as they seem. Angelina shares some clarifying ideas on discussing characters and their function in the story without pulling them out of the story and psychoanalyzing them. Other topics they discuss in this episode are: the importance of the song lyrics in this play, Dogberry and his companions, Claudio's instability, and the shape of comedy. Join us next week for the final two acts of Much Ado About Nothing. Chuffed as we were with the focus we displayed in our last episode we have decided to continue with this style. Starting off with our education systems complete inability to be entertaining and applauding manga's ability to be educational about incredibly important topics... like wine and volley ball. (Correction note: The character is Dogberry and he is from "Much Ado About Nothing" NOT "King Lear".)...( King Lear is not nearly as funny as M.A.A.N., just saying). We then moved on to musing about how being "woke" could possibly be an insult and grouping people can be used to ostracise them. ....We then found our way back onto surer ground with the expounding our appreciation for snow, Sapporo, Stray Kids and stimming behaviours. S topics were very popular. ...Oh! and Andy means "primal" not "primordial". We were tired when we recorded this ep. Honestly, neither of our brains were firing on all cylinders, not consistently.

In today's episode, we are investigating Shakespeare's comic constable in Much Ado About Nothing, Dogberry, and why this character is portrayed as a clown. We'll look at a survey of historical records from Shakespeare's time to determine if early modern constables were truly as ineffective as Dogberry appears to be and if there is a contextual reason that Shakespeare's audience would want to see them depicted as foolish on stage.  We will also discuss what the job of the early modern constable entailed, how it developed, and who the "real-life Dogberry" would have been in their communites. Finally, we will discuss how this context can shift our understanding of the character Shakespeare wrote.  Shakespeare Anyone? is created and produced by Kourtney Smith and Elyse Sharp. The complete audiobook is available for purchase at Audible.com: voicesoftoday.net/maan Much Ado About Nothing appears to have been written about 1599, shortly before As You Like It and Twelfth Night. The action combines two narrative threads: the spirited comedy of the courtship of Benedick and Beatrice, and the somber tale of confused love between Hero and Claudio. The first is a creation by Shakespeare and the second appears to have been drawn from an Italian source, either by Bandello or Ariosto. The action takes place in Messina. Eponymous lovers Hero and Claudio seem to be ideally matched and nearly everyone is looking forward to their impending marriage. The odd man out is the sinister Don John, brother and former enemy of Don Pedro, Prince of Aragon, but recently restored to the Prince's favor. Being of a morose and jealous temperament, Don John plots to disrupt the wedding and cause division between the lovers, with the aid of his fellow conspirators, Borachio and Conrade. However, this evil plan is thwarted by an unexpected incursion by the bumbling constables Dogberry and Verges. The young couple are finally reunited, but only after Claudio has first been led to believe that his rejected spouse, Hero, has died of shame and grief. The matching of Beatrice and Benedick, encouraged by some artful chicanery by Hero and Claudio, and marked by many witty and sardonic exchanges of repartee, serves to lighten the texture of the darker elements of the action. Featuring Emma Faye as Hero, Kendra Murray as Beatrice, Dara Brown as Claudio, Lillian Rachel as Benedick, Cate Barratt as Dogberry, and Gary Macfadden as Don John. Also featuring the voices of Catherine Bilson, Ron Altman, Alan Weyman, P J Morgan, Claudio Anglade, John Burlinson and Linda Barrans. Songs arranged by Alan Weyman Audio edited by Denis Daly

Much Ado About Nothing by William Shakespeare audiobook. Written around the middle of his career, Much Ado About Nothing is one of Shakespeare's great festive comedies. The men are back from the war, and everyone is ready for romance. The dashing young Claudio falls for Hero, the daughter of Leonato, governor of Messina, and his friend Don Pedro helps him secure her affection. These youthful lovers are contrasted with the more experienced (and more cynical) Benedick and Beatrice, who have to be tricked into falling in love. Don Pedro's bastard brother, Don John, provides the intrigue, and the dimwitted constable Dogberry provides the laughs.

Peter K Andersson, historiker

There is much wisdom in that statement.  Especially when it comes to teaching and preaching in our church congregational context. I don’t know who first said that comparisons are odious, but it goes back to at least 1440. Shakespeare used a comic version in his play, “Much ado about nothing” when he has Dogberry mistakenly say, “Comparisons are odorous”. Actually, perhaps they are. Comparisons leave a bad smell in your own 'nostrils’. What’s the problem with comparing yourself with other speakers? Comparing yourself against someone with greater experience, or strengths where you have weaknesses, will only leave you insecure, feeling inadequate and, if you’re not careful, even angry. You are not meant to be the other person. You’re not meant to speak exactly like them. You are called to be the best speaker you can be - and only you can be. We don’t hear of Paul, Barnabas, Apollos or others comparing themselves to each other. We see them being used in different ways according to their different strengths and experiences. Standards It occurred to me a few years ago (and I cannot remember exactly what prompted it), that, more broadly, discipleship is best seen as imitation and inspiration not as comparison to a standard. In other words, if Jesus is my standard I am always falling short. In this situation, Jesus becomes an impossible standard to attain, and becomes a source of discouragement.  Instead, Jesus is my inspiration and someone whom I would like to imitate within the context of my own life such that I can reveal my discipleship to him and show others what it means to follow King Jesus. Imitation Imitation of another person’s good habits, techniques and even their heart can be a healthy perspective.  When the apostle Paul says,“Therefore I urge you to imitate me.” (1 Cor 4:16),  he is not telling the Corinthians that they should be exactly like him. He’s asking them to imitate his faith in the context of their own situation. Now, all this to say, that as a speaker of God’s word, you are called to learn from other people, and to grow. But you are not called to be somebody else. Stop comparing yourself to that other preacher or teacher that you admire. Admire them if you wish. No harm in that. But do not make an unhealthy comparison. On the other hand, do not let fear of comparison prevent you from learning from other people who have strengths where you have weaknesses. Questions for today: “What helps you to learn from other effective speakers? What prevents you from unhealthy comparison but helps you to find inspiration?" Please add your comments on this week’s topic. We learn best when we learn in community.  Do you have a question about teaching the Bible? Is it theological, technical, practical?
