The story of Ghanaian dancehall begins with the rise of reggae music in the late 1970s. Inspired by the powerful voices of Jamaican icons like Bob Marley (Bob Marley's wife, Rita Marley, has spent more than 20 years residing in Ghana. In the 1990s, she relocated to Ghana with Bob Marley's family ) and Peter Tosh, Ghanaians found a deep resonance with reggae, seeing parallels between the Jamaican experience and their own history of colonialism and struggle. The local Rastafarian communities played a pivotal role in nurturing this bond, and soon, youth from the Zongos began to champion this emerging genre. Much like in Jamaica, these young artists expressed their socio-cultural challenges and political dissent through their music. Abeejah O'Mint, better known as Jupitar or Jupitar General, has swiftly ascended as a standout in the spheres of Reggae, Dancehall, and Afrobeats within Ghana. Emerging in 2011, Jupitar has left an indelible mark on Africa's dancehall canvas, characterized by his genuine tunes and mesmerizing performances. His initial breakout track, "Nah Touch Again" in 2010, catapulted him into the spotlight, prompting many to marvel at his distinctly African origin. 2013 was a rewarding year for him; he clinched the "Discovery of the Year" titles at both the Reggae/Dancehall BASS Awards and the MTN 4Syte Music Video Awards. By 2017, he garnered a nomination at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards, enthralling fans with a riveting live band show. Between 2015-16, his hit single "Enemies," featuring Sarkodie, resonated not just within Ghana but also far beyond its borders. This achievement led him to several nominations and eventually a win for "Best Collaboration of the Year" at the Ghana Music Awards UK (GMAUK). Jupitar's collaboration with one of Nigeria's dancehall heavyweights, PatoRanking, on "Whine" garnered vast online attention. In 2017, he clinched the title of Best African Artist at the Urban Music Awards U.K, competing with notable names like Wizkid, Mr. Eazi, and Tiwa Savage, among others. 2018 saw him being recognized as the top Dancehall act at the NELAs Award in the U.K., outshining peers like Shatta Wale and Burna Boy. He's also marked as a performer for JA Sting 2023. This was a great interview! When Alex Wagner (aka ASW or ‘A Single Wave') was diagnosed with bipolar disorder back in 2013, he leaned into self-discovery and began volunteering for Crisis Text Line so as to help others facing similar struggles. His newest concept EP, ‘Dahlia' (which dropped via Popgang Records in August) turns his visceral life experiences into sonic art, and has been the basis for a fundraising series that has raised thousands of dollars for the same national nonprofit. The collection is filled with deep vocals, steady percussion, and soothing progressive house beats that may bring peace to weary listeners. ‘Soil And The Seed,' the EP's third single, is an especially cathartic listen with a deeply personal message. “‘Soil And The Seed' is the acceptance of life as a flawed, uncomfortable, dark, beautiful ride. This acceptance heightens us. Makes us present,” ASW explains. “I wrote ‘Soil And The Seed' about those who hide from this truth, fear it, but eventually let go, embrace it.” It's safe to say the experimental queer artist and mental health advocate has accomplished just that, with thoughtful melodies that effectively free the soul. #creativehustleshow #creativehustle #hustleshow ►FACEBOOK: https://facebook.com/Dubaidenismaronga ►TWITTER: https://twitter.com/Dubaidenismamba ►YOUTUBE: https://youtube.com/@dubaidenismamba ►INSTAGRAM: https://instagram.com/kicheko_project ►LINKTREE: https://linktr.ee/DubaiDenis ►WEBSITE: https://kichekoproject.com --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theafricanexcellistpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/theafricanexcellistpodcast/support

The power of community and connection ripples into powerful, positive impact. For #WomensHistoryMonth, I want to highlight some amazing women I have worked & collaborated with over the years . Generally, books are important in the lives of children. Like their bodies, the minds of children are growing rapidly, and books are a great source of imaginative nourishment. Books delight their sense of adventure, feed their curiosity, nurture a positive self-image while instilling valuable lessons about life. Shout out to my guests at the village today , @ellenore_angelidis & her daughter !! Y'all are incredible! You not only adopted your beautiful daughter from Ethiopia but have started Open Hearts Big Dreams Fund to bring Education to #ethiopia ! Many children can get education because of the books you're organization donates to rural parts of Ethiopia all in their own languages!! Beautiful to see your daughter has written 8 children books and giving back to Ethiopia in special way! We chopped up about "Jeber", the first children's comic book featuring an Ethiopian superhero, published a few days . www. ellenoreangelidis.com --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theafricanexcellistpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theafricanexcellistpodcast/support

February marks Black History Month, an annual observance to remember and honor African-Americans and events in history. To commemorate their work, we take the time to recognize and celebrate their fight for equality and justice. We take a walk through memory lane with highlights from Season 3 ! After years of attending open mics, I've really come to appreciate how bad a stand-up set can be. Truly bad standup is almost an art form unto itself. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/theafricanexcellistpodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/theafricanexcellistpodcast/support
