SEGMENT ONE – 8:15 a.m. GUEST: Kristen Janson, associate director of freshman recruitment at MTSU TOPIC: Dec. 1 deadline fast approaching to apply a
Award-winning R&B/Rap producer Band!t fell in love with the genres as the young son of Korean American academics. Unsatisfied with the standard STEM direction, he began teaching himself the rudiments of producing original beats interwoven with samples of songs from the 70s while in college. But it would require plenty of blood, sweat, tears, and unshakeable faith in God before he was given chances to prove what he could do.
Jay has a random assortment of news and music to share on the show today and he's introducing a new segment. “Jay's Jambalaya” is somewhere between “Three for Thursday: Deluxe” and Jay's version of “News with Nick” or “Heard It Through the GREGvine.” This week it's new music from The Smile, George Soros gets into radio, and the Grateful Dead are back on the Billboard Top 200.Songs:The Smile - “Zero Sum”Grateful Dead - “Estimated Prophet, (Live at Cameron Indoor Stadium, Duke University, 4/12/78)”August of 2023 was a bad month for the Internet Archive. The nonprofit digital library website, most famous for its Wayback Machine, lost a case against book publishers regarding their “Emergency Library Project” launched during the pandemic. The same day the case was decided in District Court, UMG & Sony Music filed a copyright infringement lawsuit over the Archive's “Great 78 Project.” The project is an unprecedented effort to digitize obsolete 78 rpm records. Maximum damages, if the Archive were to lose, would top $621 million. Let the “Battle for the Soul of the Internet” commence.Song: Thee Sacred Souls - “Love For You”Greg has a song pick and then a very interesting Three For Thursday for us this week. Three songs, where each song takes an original Michael Jackson track and applies a rule to it. For example, “Human Nature but every time he says nature an animal joins the song.” We recommend playing along, but that requires you don't read the following track names.Song: Dhafer Youssef - “Odd Elegy”***********Spoiler Alert***********Songs:"Beat It but every note is С” "Smooth Criminal but every other beat is missing” "Billie Jean but every time he makes a weird noise it gets 5% faster”
Chicago house pioneer Vince Lawrence and law professor Dr. Olufunmilayo Arewa unpack how record companies have undermined Black musicians—and what we can do to enact change. This past week, Resident Advisor screened and distributed a new, award-winning documentary called Taking Back the Groove. It tells the story of Bronx-born disco legend Richie Weeks, whose song "Rock Your World" with Weeks & Co. climbed to #1 on the dance charts in the '80s. Like many Black artists throughout American recording history, his talent was strip-mined to enrich corporate record labels. In the film, Weeks and Still Music label owner Jerome Derradji narrate the story of how they clawed back the rights to Weeks's tracks, as well as the ongoing battle he's had to wage to restore his legacy and ownership over his creative work. This story is, sadly, perennial, especially for artists of colour and otherwise marginalised musicians who continue to be sidelined by major players in the music industry. In this RA Exchange, Vince Lawrence—a Chicago-based house producer and the original founder of Trax Records—speaks with Washington DC-based guest Dr. Funmi Arewa, a graduate of Harvard Law School and UC Berkeley, and a current professor at George Mason University, where she teaches business law in the creative industries. The two engage in a fascinating discussion about the history of the recording industry and the exploitation of marginalised artists that runs through its fabric. How do we make it easier for artists to claim things that are rightfully theirs? What if we could create incentives to create fairness at the core of how record labels function? Listen to their thoughts on these questions in the full episode.

In Record Cultures: The Transformation of the U.S. Recording Industry (University of Michigan Press, 2020), Kyle Barnett tells the story of the smaller U.S. record labels in the 1920s that created the genres later to be known as blues, country, and jazz. Barnett also engages the early recording industry as entertainment media, considering the ways in which sound recording, radio, and film converge in the late 1920s. Record Cultures explores Gennett Records and jazz; race records, with a focus on the African American-owned Black Swan Records, as well as the white-owned Paramount Records; the origins of old-time music as a category that will become country; the growth of radio; the intersections of music and film; and the recording industry's challenges in the wake of the Great Depression. Kyle Barnett is Associate Professor of Media Studies in the Department of Communication at Bellarmine University. Kimberly Mack holds a Ph.D. in English from UCLA, and she is an Assistant Professor of African-American literature at the University of Toledo in Ohio. Her book, Fictional Blues: Narrative Self-Invention from Bessie Smith to Jack White, is forthcoming from the University of Massachusetts Press in December 2020. Mack is also a music critic who has contributed her work to national and international publications, including Music Connection, Relix, Village Voice, PopMatters, and Hot Press. He got his Bachelor of Music degree from Middle Tennessee State University in 1983 and Master of Arts degree from the University of Memphis in 1987 with an emphasis in audio engineering and music production. Before to coming to MTSU, Dan worked professionally as an audio engineer and producer, working with artists that include B.B. King, ZZ Top, Albert Collins, Al Green, Jerry Lee Lewis, and many others. He has also served as 2nd Vice President and member of the Board of Governors for the Memphis Chapter of the NARAS, and he is a voting member of the Recording Academy and a professional member of the Audio Engineering Society. Dan has received many awards including the MTSU Alumni Association True Blue Citation of Distinction for MTSU Faculty, the MTSU Distinguished Achievement in Creative Activity Award, the Tennessee Board of Regents Academic Excellence and Quality Award, the MTSU Outstanding Teacher Award, and the Recording Industry Outstanding Alumni Award for University Service, and was inducted into the MTSU Band of Blue Hall of Fame. But most significantly for this interview, Dan was my audio teacher 30 years ago when I was at MTSU as an undergraduate student learning the basics of audio and recording. Dan taught me with a black board and three recording studios everything audio including the difference between various types of microphones, audio signal flow, the science of sound and hearing, flow charts for mixing consoles, and how to align an analog tape machine. Basically, Dan was the first teacher in my life to teach me stuff that would carry forward to change my life and career and inspire me to make records for 30 years. And the only part I regret is making those stupid bubble charts to represent audio mixes. You know the ones with a big bubble for the kick drum and a little bubble for the hi hat. "Writing (or drawing) about music is like dancing about architecture." This episode is dedicated to Ben Morton my classmate from MTSU. Ben may your bass have six strings on it in heaven and may you never have to change them again. Brian Mesko was born into a family of musicians, and raised in Little Rock, AR, Mesko began piano lessons at age 8, moving to guitar at age 10. By 12 he was playing drums, and he picked up the bass at age 14. As a teen Brian was gigging professionally, and even played drums on a short tour in Turkey at age 18. While still in high school he studied Jazz Theory & Ensemble at UALR under Michael Carenbauer (who studied under Pat Metheny at Berklee). Taking these credits on to MTSU, Brian completed a bachelor's degree in Recording Industry. Mesko lived in the Nashville area from 1997 – 2005 and played with such international jazz greats as Les McCann, Tony Monaco, Dr. Lonnie Smith, John Jorgensen and Jeff Coffin. After moving to central Virginia in 2005, Brian has been privileged to work with such jazz artists as Robert Jospe, Butch Taylor, Dane Alderson, John D'earth, Bobby Read, Charles Owens, Jonah Kane-West, Liz Barnes, any many more. Brian formed The Rootdowns organ trio with members of Butcher Brown, DJ Williams Projekt, The Big Payback, and Skydog, and they released their debut album, "Songs With Friends" in 2013. In 2015 he started The Danktet, an instrumental trio whose collective influences create a unique blend of jazz, funk, rock, pop, reggae, blues, and R&B. With Australian native Dane Alderson of the Yellow Jackets on bass, and multi-instrumentalist and visual artist Forrest Young on drums, they released their first album, "One Thing Right" in 2016. Aside from his own original projects, Brian has since joined several local projects, playing guitar and/or bass with the Robert Jospe Express, Lenny Marcus, Terry Brown Ascension Project, The Ambassador, Mojo Parker, Melissa and the Growlers, The Meskos Electric Revue, Jstop Latin Soul and Andrew Winn. Brian currently resides with his wife and son in Roanoke, VA working as a session player, performer, and guitar professor/ensemble director at the University of Lynchburg. Tim Martin started his solo career at the ripe age of 16 playing every Friday and Saturday evening at a restaurant called the Olde Tinker Mill Inn. It was a formal dining area upstairs with a pizza and beer meeting place downstairs. He would play for the diners upstairs during dinner then move downstairs for the later, livelier crowd. Building a song list of artists such as James Taylor, Dan Fogelberg, CSN&Y, Eagles, and originals he developed his style. Getting paid 15 dollars a night and free pizza seemed like a good deal to the teenaged Tim. What this job did was help him learn how to be comfortable and entertaining on stage and find what kind of tunes worked with different audiences. 42 years later he is still going strong as ever. Tim has played and still works in clubs, resorts, festivals, concerts, and private functions across southwest Virginia such as The Hotel Roanoke, Wintergreen Resort, Primeland Resort, Snowshow, Greenbrier, Homestead and more. He plays local Roanoke clubs such as The Quarter, Awful Arthurs, Annie Moore's Tavern, Brambleton Deli and more. He has shared the stage and opened for artist such as Savoy Brown, Vern Gosdin, Jonathan Edwards, Ted Nugent, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Little River Band, Southern Culture on The Skids and more. He has released two albums over the years. Real Life Dreamers in 1992 with his duo partner Mark Wilbourn and Wishes in 2000, both all original songs written by Tim.
