The Drug Law Reform Network podcast, The Daily Addict, is a powerful and thought-provoking show that tackles the issue of drug law reform head-on. The hosts, Tim and Dave, deliver a compelling message that highlights how the war on drugs is actually a war on people. Their podcast sheds light on the enormous cost to taxpayers and the lack of positive outcomes achieved through current drug policies. This show is an important platform for raising awareness and promoting change in drug laws.

One of the best aspects of The Daily Addict podcast is its ability to educate listeners about the harms caused by the current approach to drug laws. Tim and Dave do an excellent job of presenting evidence-based arguments and sharing personal stories that humanize the issue. By focusing on topics such as access to rehab programs for addicts and the Don't Punish Pain movement, they shed light on key areas where reform is needed urgently.

However, one potential downside of this podcast is that it may not appeal to everyone due to its specific focus on drug law reform. While this topic is highly relevant and important, some listeners who are not as interested in drug policy may find it less engaging or informative compared to other podcasts. Additionally, some listeners might find certain episodes repetitive or lacking in new perspectives.

In conclusion, The Daily Addict podcast produced by the Drug Law Reform Network provides a valuable platform for discussing and advocating for drug law reform. Through their informative and passionate discussions, Tim and Dave contribute significantly to raising awareness about the flaws of current drug policies. While it may not be everyone's cup of tea due to its narrow focus, those who are passionate about this issue will undoubtedly appreciate their efforts in promoting change.

Realizing the importance of an education, and in order to break free from his situation, Joe attended Southern Illinois University where he concentrated in the study of Criminal Justice and History, receiving a bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts. The son of a World War II and Korean War veteran, Joe felt compelled to enlist in the United States Marine Corps Reserve during college. He enlisted at the Carbondale, Illinois Office and attended boot camp at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California. Shortly after the devastating attacks on September 11, 2001, Joe re-enlisted and volunteered to serve as a Marine Infantryman, deploying in 2003, 2004, and again in 2007 and 2008. He honorably served with America's finest as an Infantry Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, and Platoon Commander, among other billets, in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq. Joe has been recognized by his superiors for his outstanding service as a Marine including a report when they reported, ” I have seen this Marine against our enemy and his performance was inspirational.” Among other ribbons, medals and awards, Joe was awarded multiple Navy Achievement Medals and a Combat Action Ribbon. Subsequently, Joe accepted a position as a NATO Weapons Advisor and Trainer, traveling extensively through Afghanistan and working closely with U.S. and Afghan troops as well as many other international military and civilian professionals. In 2010, Joe placed a hold on his career and began his legal education at Southern Illinois University School of Law in Carbondale, Illinois.  Joe volunteered as a legal advocate with Domestic Violence Clinic and with the Land of Lincoln in Carbondale, Illinois. After Graduation, Attorney Cervantez was hired by Charles Garnatti, as an Assistant State's Attorney with the Williamson County State's Attorney's Office. He stayed on to work for Williamson County State's Attorney Brandon Zanotti. Later, he was asked to head the juvenile docket for the Saline County State's Attorney's Office. Joe is now a partner at the Law Firm of Tetzlaff, Cervantez & Associates, P.C., a general practice law firm with four attorneys. The group specializes in Criminal Law, DUI, Family, Divorce, and Municipal Law. Joe is a certified and approved Guardian Ad Litem and Mediator in the 1st Circuit and he often does pro bono work for veterans and has been a long standing advocate for Diversion and Veteran Court programs.       My time as a juvenile shaped my life in ways that made me think about criminal justice issues since before I can remember. Later, as a prosecutor, and a defense attorney, I realized that center to true criminal justice reform is the office of the State's Attorney. The state's attorney is not just a prosecutor. The State's Attorney is a community leader and a manager, central to criminal justice policy and ultimately responsible for the safety of the community. The system is meant to be fair and just, but often, policies of the past negatively affect the fundamental fairness of our system. We need to change outdated policies of the past, help build a safer community and advocate for victims, families, and children because they deserve a modern, efficient, and fair criminal justice system. I'd like to use my life experience to lead this discussion in our community I can't wait to get to work for the people of Jackson County to increase safety, support victims and their families, advocate for our children, deliver accountability to violent offenders, and ensure that our justice system is fair, efficient, and just for everyone.

John Ehrlichman, who served 18 months in prison for his central role in the Watergate scandal, was Nixon's chief domestic advisor when the president announced the “war on drugs” in 1971. The administration cited a high death toll and the negative social impacts of drugs to justify expanding federal drug control agencies. Doing so set the scene for decades of socially and economically disastrous policies. Journalist Dan Baum wrote in the April cover story of Harper's about how he interviewed Ehrlichman in 1994 while working on a book about drug prohibition. Ehrlichman provided some shockingly honest insight into the motives behind the drug war. From Harper's:   “You want to know what this was really all about?” he asked with the bluntness of a man who, after public disgrace and a stretch in federal prison, had little left to protect. “The Nixon campaign in 1968, and the Nixon White House after that, had two enemies: the antiwar left and black people. You understand what I'm saying? We knew we couldn't make it illegal to be either against the war or black, but by getting the public to associate the hippies with marijuana and blacks with heroin, and then criminalizing both heavily, we could disrupt those communities. We could arrest their leaders, raid their homes, break up their meetings, and vilify them night after night on the evening news. Did we know we were   In other words, the intense racial targeting that's become synonymous with the drug war wasn't an unintended side effect ― it was the whole point. The quote kicks off Baum's “Legalize It All,” the cover story for Harper's April 2016 issue. Read the whole article, which is a comprehensive argument for drug legalization, here.   Baum explained to The Huffington Post why he didn't include the quote in his 1996 book, Smoke and Mirrors: The War on Drugs and the Politics of Failure. “There are no authorial interviews in [Smoke and Mirrors] at all; it's written to put the reader in the room as events transpire,” Baum said in an email. “Therefore, the quote didn't fit. It did change all the reporting I did for the book, though, and changed the way I worked thereafter.” The quote does, however, appear in the 2012 book The Moment, a collection of “life-changing stories” from writers and artists. Baum also talked to HuffPost about why Ehrlichman would confess such a thing in such blunt terms. “It taught me that people are often eager to unburden themselves, once they no longer have a dog in the fight,” Baum said. “The interviewer needs to be patient sometimes, and needs to ask the right way. But people will often be incredibly honest if given the chance.” UPDATE: 3/25 ― Three of John Ehrlichman's former colleagues have disavowed the quote attributed to him, questioning whether he said it and suggesting that if he did, he may have been making a sarcastic comment. They also disputed the idea that the war on drugs was racially motivated. Read their whole response here.  https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/27/health/johnson-and-johnson-opioids-oklahoma.html

https://www.benzinga.com/markets/cannabis/20/05/16046911/study-cannabis-could-prevent-covid-19-infection Researchers specializing in infectious disease at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada are turning to cannabis as they build a new COVID-19 virus vaccine candidate. The research team says that a plant-based antigen may be easier to produce commercially on a broad scale than animal-based antigens. Zyus Life Sciences, a medical cannabis company based out of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, will determine if cannabis-based compounds can play a role in the fight against the novel coronavirus that causes COVID-19. Last year, the company received its license from Health Canada to develop cannabis-based medical products. Zyus Life Sciences partnered with the Vaccine and Infectious Disease Organization-International Vaccine Centre (VIDO-InterVac) at the University of Saskatchewan in an effort to develop proteins for a vaccine candidate using the cannabis plant. It is one of many efforts in the race for a viable vaccine. Given the cornucopia of drugs that are being examined in the quest for a COVID-19 “cure”—including everything from hydroxychloroquine to the drug remdesivir—inevitably researchers turned to cannabis as a potential building block for a viable vaccine candidate as well. How It Works “We had a protein platform that we've been working on for a number of years prior to being in the cannabis space…” Zyus CEO Brent Zettl told Global News. “I asked [our team] the question, ‘do you think that we could produce a vaccine of this type of protein using our other plant system?' And they didn't really see why not.”  Zettle went on to explain that his team is working with two types of different compounds. One is made using a cannabis plant and another one is made using a different plant. The compounds are used to produce a protein that can be used for a COVID-19 vaccine candidate. “The genetic information that VIDO-InterVac has developed to find the actual antigen that would work as a vaccine—that's actually a strand of protein. So then we take that DNA and we actually then design it in a plant and then the plant itself can manufacture that same protein,” Zettl added. According to Zettl, plant-based compounds can potentially be more effective than animal-based compounds because of plants' ability to clone proteins easier. Plants are surprisingly efficient at manufacturing proteins. Plant-based compounds are better for large-scale operation capacity. In addition, plant-based proteins could be more appealing to an increasingly vegan population in the U.S. Dr. Paul Hodgson, a senior manager with VIDO-InterVac, told CBC News that no one really knows what a final vaccine candidate will be, this early in the early stages of investigation. But with every vaccine trial, we know more about the virus and how it may be thwarted. Anti-Vaxxer Implications As anti-vaxxers gain dominance on platforms like Facebook—the efficacy of vaccines for the novel coronavirus COVID-19 is likely to be disputed. A large number of anti-vaxxers already oppose any kind of COVID-19 vaccine, according to CTV News. But the teams at VIDO-InterVac and Zyus Life Sciences could be potentially on to something groundbreaking, which could produce yet another benefit from the cannabis plant. The CBD community, for instance, often overlaps with the anti-vaxxer community. In the past, VIDO-InterVac previously produced two animal-based coronavirus vaccines, one for cattle and another for pigs. The company holds title as the first lab in Canada to have a vaccine candidate for animal testing, according to CBC News. VIDO-InterVac's lab  received a 23 million-dollar grant in federal fundinglast March to aid its COVID-19-related research. Judging by the research lab's long list of achievements in the past, VIDO-InterVac could be onto something once again. A purified vaccine protein could be ready by the end of August, representatives of VIDO-InterVac said. That's when enough of the protein discovered by VIDO-InterVac will likely be extracted. In the U.S., the race for a vaccine is in full throttle. Dr. Anthony Fauci, longtime director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, recently told a Senate panel that  U.S. research teams are likely to find a viable vaccine, but not in time for the school year.  Other companies are also looking into other avenues for potential drugs to treat the effects of COVID-19, such as a team of researchers at the University of Lethbridge. In that study, some cannabis extracts reduced viral receptor activity in artificial human tissue—significantly. Researchers in Israel are also exploring how cannabis compounds could help to repair tissues damaged by COVID-19. CBD's known anti-inflammatory properties make it appealing to scientists.  Cannabis components could prove to be useful for both vaccine candidates and other types of drugs meant to alleviate symptoms. In the race for a vaccine for the virus that causes COVID-19, more possibilities are likely to emerge involving the cannabis plant.

Andrew DeAngelo is a unique leader with a proven track record of making visionary social change and business innovations operational. During his almost 13-year tenure at Harborside he has pioneered legal cannabis business processes, and provided political engagement and thought leadership to the cannabis community.   Andrew led the design and development of gold-standard cannabis retail by innovating many “firsts” for the industry, including introducing CBD medicines to heal severely epileptic children (as documented in Discovery Channel's Weed Wars in 2011), implementing the first lab-testing program in the history of cannabis dispensing, creating child-resistant packaging for edibles, standardizing inventory tracking, initiating senior outreach, and successfully preventing the federal government from seizing Harborside in forfeiture actions against the company in 2012.   Andrew graduated with honors from Chapman University with a B.F.A degree in Communications/Theatre. He began his political career as an activist while studying for his M.F.A in acting at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco. Over two decades as an activist, Andrew worked on a variety of voter initiatives which legalized medical and adult use cannabis in San Francisco, Washington D.C, and the State of California. As an actor, Andrew starred at the 1997 Sundance International Film Festival in the feature film Mary Jane's Not A Virgin Anymore and on national television shows like Superior Court and Homicide: Life on the Street as well as dozens of plays all over the country. He also starred in Discovery Channel's reality television series Weed Wars in 2011-12. Andrew has also been a professor of acting at Chapman University and has offered cannabis business training on Green Flower Media. As a speaker, Andrew has appeared at the MJBusiness Daily Conference in Las Vegas, NCIA Conferences in Chicago/Boston/San Jose and the U.S Cannabis Conference in Miami.   https://andrewdeangelo.com/   https://www.lastprisonerproject.org/
