Currently, she captains a SpaceX vessel, bringing with her over 18 years of maritime experience. A SUNY Maritime College graduate, she has held various positions, including USCG Designated Examiner and Director of Advocacy. Captain Price serves on two Federal Advisory Committees, NMERPAC and NTSAC.In 2011, she became the first female Captain at G&H Towing Company and holds pilotage in major ports like Los Angeles, Long Beach, Galveston, and Houston. In 2022, she joined SpaceX, overseeing the safe recovery of Falcon rockets and fairings.Passionate about diversity and inclusion, Captain Price aspires to become a Harbor Pilot on the Texas Gulf Coast. Outside her maritime career, she is an EMT, Captain of the city's Volunteer Fire Department, a nationally ranked United States Master swimmer, and a CrossFit enthusiast. Join us as we set sail with Emma Garschagen, the inspiring founder of Sail Seabird, which offers transformative sail training voyages across Maine and Cape Cod. With over 25,000 ocean miles under her belt, Emma's maritime journey is nothing short of extraordinary. She has sailed dinghies on the Hudson River, schooners in Haiti, tall ships in New Zealand, and sloops through the North Sea. She holds a USCG Masters License, commercial Yachtmaster Offshore, a Medical Person in Charge certification, and STCW basic training. For three years, Emma sailed as chief mate for 59 North Sailing on their Swan 48, Swan 59, and Farr 65 on offshore sailing adventures. Her passages ranged from North Atlantic crossings to an expedition in Svalbard. She also skippered a three-week advanced sail training voyage for Broadreach, sailing with ten high school-aged students between Saint Maarten and Grenada. On today's episode, Christine gets to speak with Cassidy Patton from Ketchikan, Alaska, who grew up in a fishing community that inspired her to seek out a career at sea.  She shares all about the Alaska Marine Highway System, along with diving into her interesting story of growing up in Alaska and her experience in the maritime world. Cassidy attended the California Maritime Academy, graduated in 2017, and started her career as a mate at Alaska Marine Highway. Sailing as a mate with AMHS was a unique experience involving advanced ship handling, navigating narrow waterways, and obtaining Alaskan pilotage. She drew over 20 charts for earning Southeast Alaska pilotage which is a lengthy and challenging process. This doesn't even cover the breathtaking scenery she sees daily - from glaciers and killer whales to tall, snowcapped mountains. She is grateful to have ended up in this corner of the maritime world.She sailed as a mate for six years and recently made the decision to move shoreside. So far, she is happy she made the leap. She was able to become a Port Captain for AMHS back here in Ketchikan, where she is learning a lot in terms of the regulatory and business side of maritime.She is 25% Alaska Native and a member of the Tongass Tribe. She was raised by strong and confident women, and throughout her experience in the maritime, she has met a lot of women who share those characteristics. She owes them big for influencing her and encouraging her to pursue this crazy career at sea. This is a really interesting story and insight that you don't want to miss!
