In today's episode of The Veterinary Business Success Show, Brendan Howard holds a discussion with Krista Magnifico on her recent animal rescue mission trip to Ukraine. Dr. Magnifico earned her veterinary degree from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine in 2005. From vet school, she bought a veterinary clinic in northern Maryland where she practiced surgery for cats and dogs. After seven years in general practice and successfully growing her practice, Krista envisioned a world where pet care was more widely accessible to pet owners without concern for their geography or economic status; with this vision, she founded Pawbly, an organization that partners with other organizations in helping animals find people to care for them. Before getting into veterinary medicine, Krista was a merchant mariner and after graduating from the United States Merchant Marine Academy, she sailed for 10 years as Chief Mate of cable-laying ocean-going vessels! Along with the hundreds of homeless and abandoned animals that Krista helps rescue each year, she shares her home with her three dogs (Jeckyl, Charlie, and Savannah), three cats (Wren, Oriole, and Magpie), and a pot-bellied pig named Strawberry. On the rare occasion that she's not helping an animal in need, Krista can be found antiquing all around Northern Maryland and Pennsylvania. In this episode, Dr. Magnifico narrates how her urge to save animals led her to the war-torn country of Ukraine. She shares her experience from how she prepared for the trip to the day she landed in Romania to when she finally arrived at her designated animal shelter in Ukraine. This episode provides a deep insight into the animal situation in Ukraine and how veterinarians and other volunteers can team up to offer assistance. I recently sat down with Antuan Magic Raimone to learn about his journey to become the first male universal swing for the five US companies of the popular musical, Hamilton. It's a remarkable career story for someone in his field as he has been able to make a solid living as a performer from the start, without compromising his values. That is not to say that he did not experience some bumps in the road. Yet, he learned from those experiences, kept his ego in check, while maintaining his love for his craft and his confidence in his talent. Antuan grew up Blue Springs, Missouri, a small suburb near Kansas City. He was raised by his mother, a single parent and for a period of time, they lived as a family with his two older half-sisters until they became independent. Antuan stated that his sisters had vocal talent and while each aspired to pursue entertainment careers, their lives went in other directions. His mother sang in the church choir. He sang in the choir there since he was a little boy and joined his school choir in middle school. As a kid, Antuan was a fan of Jean-Claude Van Damme and dreamed of making movies as a martial arts actor. At ten, he took Tae Kwon Do, earning his black belt in just two years. His instructor, recognizing his talent, offered him a scholarship to increase his class time. This led to competing in the Junior Olympics, with an eye toward the US Olympic team, expected to open up to Tae Kwon Do a few years later, but Antuan burned out. At the risk of disappointing his mother and instructor, he decided to stop. Mom was very supportive. His instructor tried to offer accommodations to make it work, but Antuan stood his ground. MTV was coming onto the scene. Antuan loved Janet Jackson's music videos and would mimic her moves. He aspired to become one of her backup dancers. He got involved in school plays, musical theater to be exact. Antuan loved it, although he learned about how unfair the world could be, especially to a young black male trying to get cast in musicals that were originally written for all white characters. Throughout high school and college, he learned how to navigate numerous disappointments, painfully and yet, with hope. As the author of Becoming Magic: A Path of Personal Reconstruction, a TEDx speaker, and Soldier of Love, Antuan has more than 20 years of experience in musical theater. He champions light, love, and joy for others. His passion and purpose are to empower people to live a whole life, where mistakes can exist, fear isn't debilitating, and vulnerability is not a weakness. In this week's Work From The Inside Out podcast, learn more about Antuan's journey: Antuan has worked as a singer, dancer, choreographer, and actor on cruise ships, in theme parks, regional theater, and on Broadway. A sexual violence survivor, Antuan is on the Advisory Council for the Office of Victim Services of New York, has given many keynote addresses, spoke on a panel at the Men's Sexual Assault Summit, and at the United States Merchant Marine Academy. In this episode: We meet Andrew Matthes and Leyton Torres to hear about their experiences with the SystemsGo High School STEM Curriculum Program from both teacher and student perspectives. Matthes has been teaching at Fredericksburg High School in Fredericksburg, Texas, since 2003. He has taught chemistry, all levels of physics, and currently teaches all four years of the engineering program. Having graduated from the United States Merchant Marine Academy with a bachelor's degree in Marine Engineering, he sailed as a third assistant engineer on commercial merchant ships to fulfill his obligation. Deciding not to follow the design engineering path thereafter, he moved up his plans to teach and followed his true passion — changing lives through hands-on education. Leyton Torres is finishing his junior year at Fredericksburg High School and has been in the SystemsGo engineering classes since his freshman year. He has always been a problem solver, driven by challenges and new opportunities. He volunteered at the 2021 SystemsGo launches for two days, totaling about 24 hours, and assisted in launching a record-breaking 40 rockets in one day. He is now interested in pursuing a career in aerospace engineering. In our conversation, Andrew shares how he first learned about SystemsGo's innovative high school rocketry and aerospace curriculum, and what made him decide to bring the program to his school. Leyton discusses helping with the launches and building rockets in past years, the obstacles he encountered, and how SystemsGo changed his future goals. In explaining how SystemsGo encourages students to develop an emotional connection to their projects, Matthes says, “The fact that they take ownership over everything ... when it flies, they've got a lot of heart and emotion and commitment put into their rocket, and I think it sticks with them much longer knowing that it's 100% theirs.” To learn more about SystemsGo, visit www.systemsgo.org. Persistence and persuasion open doors. This combination took Mike McKim from the Navy to sales in the midst of the dot-com boom and eventually to his real passion: high-quality coffee.Whether working his way into a Naval academy, selling telecoms or espresso machines, or starting his own coffee company, Mike doesn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. Mike joined the Navy after high school, as a path to admission in a service academy. He took college classes for three years — and made sure his superior officers noticed his hard work. Eventually he got a place at Kings Point, the United States Merchant Marine Academy, but dropped out after a year. Today, Mike doesn’t regret leaving, “but I do consider it my biggest failure.”A move to Dallas, TX, reunited Mike with his friend Patrick, who set him up selling telecoms hardware at the height of the dot-com boom. “That's when I really got bit by the entrepreneurial bug,” Mike says.Mike and Patrick came up with several business ideas. But it was when Mike’s uncle showed them his coffee roaster that Mike recognized a winning product. The people of Texas, however, disagreed. They weren’t prepared to pay the high prices attached to his high-quality products. With bills to pay and a new baby at home, Mike talked his way into a job selling espresso machines. He did that for five years, still roasting and selling coffee on the side. As the coffee-selling side gig started to take up his weekdays, Mike took the plunge, quit his day job, and committed to Cuvée Coffee full time. He’s still innovating. Cuvée Coffee was the first to sell nitro cold brew, and then the first to sell it in widget cans that recreate the frothy texture produced by kegs.“What I've learned about myself over the years is that the best thing somebody can do [to motivate me] is tell me, ‘You can't do this.’” Featured Entrepreneur
