Spawn #86 - Story - Todd McFarlane & Brian Holguin, Pencils - Greg Capullo, Inks - Danny Miki, Letters - Tom Orzechowski, Colors - Dave Kemp, Brian Haberlin & Dan Kemp As Spawn laments the loss of life that always seems to accompany any actions he takes, he is confronted by a strangely familiar man. As the stranger leads him to the grave of Al Simmons, he tells Spawn that he is, in fact, Al Simmons. Faced with the man he used to be, Spawn is forced to finally give up his past and move forward with his new life as Spawn, but what price must he pay to make this happen. It's the fight you never thought you'd see, Spawn vs Al Simmons.
Spawn #76 - Story - Todd McFarlane & Brian Holguin, Pencils - Dwayne Turner, Inks - Danny Miki, Letters - Tom Orzechowski, Colors - Brian Haberlin, Dan Kemp & Tyson Wengler It what is definitely the most romantic issue of Spawn to date, Al learns the "secret origin" of Granny Blake and how much he and Wanda have in common with Granny and her late husband, Jack. We get gorgeous line and color work illustrating this issue that covers decades of history and goes from a graveyard on Earth to heaven and back again. It's not only a nice chance for Al Simmons to catch his breath after all the tumultuous action he has seen lately, but it's a chance for readers to catch there breath also. That doesn't mean it isn't a must-read though as the themes of love and devotion are a reminder of how those ideas are at the very heart of Spawn as a character and were present from the beginning. Sure the chains, spikes and capes are cool, but despite the demons and monsters and hellfire, Spawn IS a love story.
Spawn #75 - Story - Todd McFarlane & Brian Holguin, Pencils - Greg Capullo, Inks - Danny Miki, Letters - Tom Orzechowski, Colors - Brian Haberlin, Dan Kemp & Tyson Wnegler We find out who has taken Spawn from Earth and why, but it isn't good news for Spawn or perhaps the planet either. As these beings explain their motivations to Spawn and grant him a new ability they deem a "gift", it appears that Spawn may not survive using this new ability. An ultimate sacrifice is made to return Spawn to Earth, but the price that is paid is high and the consequences of these events feel like something Spawn will be dealing with for a long time. It seems ever since his latest resurrection, Al Simmons hasn't known a moments peace. Unfortunately, it appears that his life is only getting more complicated.
Spawn #74 - Story - Todd McFarlane & Brian Holguin, Pencils - Greg Capullo, Inks - Danny Miki, Letters - Tom Orzechowski, Colors - Brian Haberlin & Dan Kemp As Sam and Twitch examine the file on Al Simmons that Cogliostro left with them, it becomes clear that they don't have all the pieces to the puzzle. They do know that Jason Wynn may have a lot of the answers, but since they can't get to Wynn they plan to go after Spawn himself again for the answers to their questions. What they don't know is that Spawn is engaged in a life and death struggle with The Heap and when the dust settles, it isn't the Hellspawn who comes out on top. When Cogliostro and Bootsy come upon the scene of that battle it becomes apparent, that Spawn is not present on Earth, Heaven or Hell. Does this mean Spawn has been erased from existence? If so, who is The Heap working for and just how powerful are they?

The Baseball Writers' Association of America surprisingly bypasses former New York Yankees great Joe DiMaggio in his first year on the Hall of Fame ballot.DiMaggio will gain an election two years later.Dean gathers 209 votes while Simmons' total of 199 is one more than needed. The colorful Dean had a .644 career winning percentage and won 120 games from 1932 through 1936, including 30 wins in 1934. Simmons, who drove in 100 runs in each of his first eleven major league seasons, was one of the most feared hitters of his time. Also joining DiMaggio, who finishes 8th in the voting, are in order Bill Terry, Bill Dickey, Rabbit Maranville, Dazzy Vance, Ted Lyons, Chief Bender (9th) and Gabby Hartnett (10th). All will eventually make it.The Yankee Clipper will have to wait until 1955 when 88.8% of the BBWAA scribes put his name on their ballot.

7/8/1935 - MLB All Star Game - Cleveland Stadium - The third annual Major League Baseball All-Star Game was played in July 1935 at Cleveland Stadium. Nearly 70,000 fans filled the enormous ballpark, which had just opened a few years earlier. The game was a showcase for the new stadium, which was nearly 4 times the capacity of Cleveland's previous League Park. Babe Ruth didn't play in this game, having retired mid season just a month earlier. But, hall of famer Lefty Gomez made his third consecutive all-star game start as pitcher for the American League. He was joined by other stars such as Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Charlie Genhringer, Al Simmons, and Mel Ott. The game was broadcast by the Mutual Radio Network by Bob Elson and Ellis VanderPyl.1935 MLB Standings..........https://retroseasons.com/leagues/mlb/1935/standings/Cleveland Stadium.........https://retroseasons.com/stadiums/cleveland-stadium/.National League Starting Lineup1 - 3B - Pepper Martin2 - SS - Arky Vaughan3 - RF - Mel Ott4 - LF - Joe Medwick5 - 1B - Bill Terry6 - CF - Wally Berger7 - 2B - Billy Herman8 - C - Jimmie Wilson9 - P - Bill Walker.American League Starting Lineup1 - RF - Joe Vosmik2 - 2B - Charlie Gehringer3 - 1B - Lou Gehrig4 - 3B - Jimmie Foxx5 - LF - Bob Johnson6 - CF - Al Simmons7 - C - Rollie Hemsley8 - SS - Joe Cronin9 - P - Lefty Gomez
On July 10, 1945, ten new members are inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame. Among them are catcher Roger Bresnahan, outfielder Hugh Duffy, and shortstop Hughie Jennings.Roger Bresnanhan is generally regarded as the most famous catcher of the deadball era. In a time when catchers rarely batted higher than 8th, Bresnahan was a leadoff hitter due to his high on base percentage and speed that belied his 200 pound frame. He broke into the majors as a pitcher, throwing a six hit shutout in his first appearance but had the ability to play every other position. Perhaps his most notable contributions to the game were in the development of protective equipment. Bresnahan is credited for the development of the batting helmet, shin guards for catchers, and improving the safety of the catcher's mask. Despite initial ridicule and protest, these safety measures all caught on and are standard equipment in today's game.Hughie Jennings, for his career stole 359 bases, walked 347 times, and holds the record for number of times hit by a pitch at 287. Each of these totaling more than his meager strikeout total of 233. Hugh Duffy, holds the single season record with a .438 batting average. In 1894, he amassed 234 hits in only 124 games, while playing for the Boston Beaneaters. Duffy collected 50 doubles and 18 homeruns during that amazing season! On July 10, 1934, in one of the most memorable All-Star Game performances ever, Carl Hubbell strikes out five consecutive future Hall of Famers. Hubbell fanned Ruth, Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons, and Joe Cronin in that game won by the American League, 9-7. Hubbell himself gained entry to the Hall in 1947.In 1936, at Forbes Field, Chuck Klein hits 4 home runs in one game, including the tie-breaker in the tenth, helping the Phillies defeat the Pirates, 9-6. The Indianapolis, Indiana native barely misses hitting an additional homer in the second when right fielder Paul Waner catches his drive against the wall. At 36, Klein is the oldest player ever to hit four homers in a game, and the first National Leaguer in the 20th century to do so.On July 10, 1982, Larry Parrish of the Texas Rangers tied a major league record by clubbing his third grand slam within the span of a week. Parrish's latest slam lifted the Rangers to a 6-5 win over the Detroit Tigers. In 1968, Detroit's Jim Northrup also hit three grand slams in a week.Historical Recap performed by:Robyn Newton from - Robyn Says This Day In Baseball is Sponsored by - www.vintagebaseballreflections.com - Join the membership today and listen to 50 years of baseball history told to you by the folks who were there! December 22nd Show Notes Born on December 22, 1862 in East Brookfield, MA, Player, manager, scout, general manager, owner — Cornelius MacGillicuddy (Connie Mack) — did it all. For more than half a century, he owned and managed the Philadelphia A's — nearly their entire existence. He built two dynasties that won a total of five World Series titles. Mack was often described as the “grand old gentleman of the game,” but he wasn't above stretching the rules to gain a competitive advantage. He was rumored to have kept frozen baseballs handy to insert into the game when his pitchers were on the mound. He also employed a special coach who stationed himself in center field at Shibe Park to steal signs from opposing teams. Connie Mack pieced together a tremendous baseball team in the first decade of the 20th century, built in large part, around his famous “$100,000 Infield.” At the time, Mack claimed that even that lofty dollar-amount would not pry the four star players away from him. In 1911, John “Stuffy” McInnis was switched to first base to replace the aging Harry Davis, a fine player. McInnis, who earned his nickname because he had the “right stuff” as a young ballplayer in Boston, joined Eddie Collins, Jack Barry, and Frank Baker to form the greatest infield of the era. His A's from 1929-1931, had a team second to none, which featured Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Cochrane, Al Simmons, Lefty Grove, George Earnshaw, Rube Walberg, and Jack Quinn. Mack holds the all-time record for most games managed (7,755), most games won (3,731), and most games lost (3,814). His record of 50 years managing one team, and 53 years overall will most likely never be broken. Tom December 22, 1944 – Future Hall of Famer Steve Carlton is born in Miami, Florida. Rivaling Tom Seaver as the finest pitcher of the 1970s, Steve Carlton won the National League Cy Young Award in 1972 and 1977 before capturing another two trophies during the early portion of the ensuing decade. One of the greatest left-handed hurlers in the history of the game, Carlton trails only Warren Spahn in victories for a southpaw, with 329. He also ranks fourth on the all-time strikeout list with a total of 4,136. The first pitcher to win four Cy Young Awards, Lefty, as he came to be known, surpassed 20 victories on six separate occasions, winning at least 16 games another four times. Over an 18-year stretch beginning in 1967, he failed to post at least 13 victories just once. During that same period, he also finished with an earned run average under 3.00 eight times, struck out more than 200 batters eight times, and threw at least 250 innings 13 times. Carlton remains the last National League pitcher to compile as many as 25 victories in a season, as well as the last pitcher from any team to throw more than 300 innings in a season. December 22, 1980 — The Boston Red Sox mail Fred Lynn and Carlton Fisk their new contracts two days after the Basic Agreement's December 20 deadline. Boston's blunder makes their All-Stars eligible for free agency. Fisk will land in Chicago after a legal battle and complete a Hall of Fame career over the next decade plus. Lynn will end up traded to California with Rick Burleson, and play 11 more seasons. However, he will never have the impact he did in Boston. This was a dark era in Boston, similar to recent times as they let a Hall of Fame player slip away, as well as trading away the soul of the team. It took several years for them to become competitive again, when Roger Clemens would arrive in the summer of 1984. December 22, 1999 — In an interview in Sports Illustrated magazine, Atlanta Braves P John Rocker offends virtually every race and ethnic group in a hateful outburst. Community leaders, media, management, coaches, and teammates alike call for action to be taken against the lefthander, who had 38 saves for Atlanta this past season. In a story published in the December 27, 1999 issue of Sports Illustrated, Rocker made a number of allegations stemming from his experiences in New York City and answered a question about whether he would ever play for the New York Yankees or the New York Mets. I'd retire first. It's the most hectic, nerve-wracking city. Imagine having to take the 7 Train to the ballpark looking like you're riding through Beirut-next to some kid with purple hair, next to some queer with AIDS, right next to some dude who just got out of jail for the fourth time, right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids. It's depressing… The biggest thing I don't like about New York are the foreigners. You can walk an entire block in Times Square and not hear anybody speaking English. Asians and Koreans and Vietnamese and Indians and Russians and Spanish people and everything up there. How the hell did they get in this country? During the interview, he also spoke of his opinion of the New York Mets and their fans: Nowhere else in the country do people spit at you, throw bottles at you, throw quarters at you, throw batteries at you and say, “Hey, I did your mother last night—she's a whore.” I talked about what degenerates they were and they proved me right. The interview was conducted while driving to a speaking engagement in Atlanta. The reporter, Jeff Pearlman, wrote that during the interview session, Rocker spat on a Georgia State Route 400 toll machine and mocked Asian women. Also, Rocker referred to Curaçaoan teammate Randall Simon as a “fat monkey”. Although Rocker later apologized after speaking with Braves legend and Hall of Famer Hank Aaron and former Atlanta mayor and congressman Andrew Young, he continued to make controversial remarks. For his comments, Commissioner Bud Selig suspended Rocker without pay for the remainder of spring training and the first 28 games of the 2000 season, which on appeal was reduced to 14 games (without a spring-training suspension). December 22, 1953 –Jack Dunn III officially turns over the name “Orioles” to the St. Louis Browns, who recently were acquired in November 1953 by a syndicate of Baltimore business and civic interests led by attorney and civic activist Clarence Miles and Mayor Thomas D'Alesandro Jr. His family had successfully operated the International League Orioles franchise for years in Baltimore, Maryland. The original Orioles, an AL charter member franchise eventually moved to New York in 1903 to eventually become the Highlanders, and then the Yankees. The move to Baltimore was ushered in with the arrival of Brooks Robinson in 1955. They experienced their greatest success from 1966 to 1983, when they made six World Series appearances, winning three of them (1966, 1970, 1983). This era of the club featured many future Hall of Famers who would later be inducted representing the Orioles, such as third baseman Brooks Robinson, outfielder Frank Robinson, starting pitcher Jim Palmer, first baseman Eddie Murray, shortstop Cal Ripken Jr., and manager Earl Weaver.
The 1933 Chicago World's Fair saw what was planned to be a one-off "All Stars" exhibition game, with two rosters selected by the fans of each league. Following its success, including a significant charitable donation from ticket sales, the Midsummer Classic returned in 1934. Stepping up to the plate for the American League are five bona fide legends, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jimmie Foxx, Al Simmons and Joe Cronin. Facing them on the mound for the National League was Cal Hubbell and his classic screwball. Pitching in his home field, Hubbell is about to set a strikeout streak that remains one of the greatest fannings of all time. The box score can be found here. This game was played on July 10th, 1934. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/classicbaseballradio/message

The players say something more is going on as well. They say there’s been a shift in the team’s vibe due in large part to a new mix of veterans and younger players. Todd McFarlane's SPAWN is the pick for this week's episode and Delainey absolutely loves it! Al Simmons, Clown, and of course, Malebolgia have stolen her heart-- like Violator ripping them from the chest of NY Mafiosos!
“Oops. A wet one. I hope I don't stain my underwear. Look at that. Skid Marks.” - The ClownFolks that's the level of sophistication on display in this week's film. You've been warned!Welcome to a brand new episode of Not A Bomb, the podcast where we reexamine some of Hollywood's biggest financial bombs and critically panned films. The podcast has hit rock bottom, again, this time with the 1997 superhero film - Spawn. Based on the Image comic and created by the legendary artist Tood McFarlane, Spawn is the story of Al Simmons making a deal with a demon to get revenge for those who have turned him into an overcooked hamburger. Have you seen The Crow? Maybe read a Batman comic? Well, you've seen Spawn the movie. Friend of the show and host of The Gentlemen's Guide to Midnite Cinema, Sammy, joins to discuss the origins of the character, Image Comics and the correct pronunciation of McFarlane.TimestampsIntro - (1:32)Spawn Comic Discussion - (20:00)Box Office Results & Critically Response - (28:23)Behind the Camera - (37:17)In Front of Camera - (48:00)Production & Development - (58:27)Spawn Film Discussion - (63:30)Is it a bomb? - (110:20)Listener Feedback - (114:20)Outro - (125:20)Spawn is directed Mark A.Z. Matt and Lee talk about Deathmate Image/Valiant crossover and some of their favorite Valiant Comics from the 90's. ----more---- Images from the show are HERE Deathmate notes: Designated by color rather than issue numbers (namely Yellow, Blue, Black, and Red) plus two book-end issues, Deathmate Prologue and Deathmate Epilogue, as well as Preview issues collected with comic products, the four main issues were written so they could be read in any order. Created at the peak of the comic book speculator boom, the project was heavily promoted and sold hundreds of thousands of copies, but was beset with production delays. The Image half (Black, Red, and Epilogue) came out severely behind schedule and out of sequence. Deathmate Red shipped after the epilogue issue, and despite cover dates of September 1993 to February 1994, the actual publication lag was far longer than six months. The plot evolved around a chance interdimensional meeting of two characters, Solar from Valiant and Void from Image's WildC.A.T.s. The two became lovers, but their joining would mean the destruction of both comic book universes. It is notable that only half of the Image founding members chose to take part. Erik Larsen, Jim Valentino, and Todd McFarlane were not involved, although McFarlane's character Al Simmons makes a brief appearance in Deathmate Red. In my personal opinion yellow, blue and the prologue had a more cohesive story. Where the image characters had a better integration into the valiant universe's history. Case in point brigade's characters worked for Harada Industries, an X men derived group. Besides being delayed black and red's stories definitely had a rushed feel to the story. In black we see the Top Cow studio take front and center with ties to Wildcats and Gen 13. X O makes an appearance, but he is used more like a power hungry military general than a visigoth with an alien suit of armor. Union , an energy based alien creature is the one character from black that allows this story to connect to the epilogue. Red's story, sadly for me, is just a Rob Liefeld sketchbook. The story is about Youngblood in this new universe the biggest addition is that Bloodshot is a member. While the Prophet is poorly used as a plot point to let the heroes know what is wrong with this amalgamation of a world. Red was so far delayed that it was released after the epilogue issue. Epilogue centers more around the events from blue with Solar, supreme, and Darque. This series had a great germ of an idea, but it missed the boat with the creative teams. If it had some editorial oversight for both companies it might have had a chance at being a success. However, with egos, missed deadlines, and perhaps the lack of experience from portions of the owners with the business side of things it went down as a failure. For me , I liked parts of the story and going back and rereading the story with a more mature eye I can see what drew me to the story. 1 The crossover was something rarely seen between two independent comic groups. 2 Deathmate had the rock and roll comic artists 3 Although Valiant at the beginning wasn't flashy, they had a good set of storytellers and a well thought-out and connected universe. I was hoping that it would influence the Image books. 4 Finally the book introduced me to more “up and coming'' creators. Like Joe Q and Jeff Matsuda. Facts about publication sales: The Valiant Deathmate books (Prologue, Blue, and Yellow) had print runs of over 700,000 copies, but by the time Deathmate Red was released, it had a print run of 250,000, although retailers were nonetheless left with many unsold copies. At the time, comic book distributors would only allow unsold books to be returned if they were six months late. Valiant Comics Notes: In 1988, former editor-in-chief of Marvel Comics Jim Shooter, Steven J. Massarsky and a group of investors attempted to purchase Marvel Entertainment. They submitted the second-highest bid, with financier Ronald Perelman submitting the highest bid and acquiring Marvel. Shooter and Massarsky instead formed Voyager Communications in 1989 with significant venture capital financing from Triumph Capital. Valiant (an imprint of Voyager Communications) recruited numerous writers and artists from Marvel, including Barry Windsor-Smith and Bob Layton, and launched an interconnected line of superhero comics featuring a mixture of characters licensed from Western Publishing and original creations. 1993 Valiant won Best Publisher over 5% Market Share, becoming the first publisher outside of Marvel and DC to do so. Valiant also engaged in several comic book-marketing innovations common in the 1990s, such as issue zero "origin" issues, the gold logo program, coupons redeemable for original comic books, and chromium covers. Following the conclusion of the "Unity" crossover in September 1992, Valiant released Bloodshot, Ninjak, H.A.R.D. Corps, The Second Life of Dr. Mirage, and Timewalker, among other titles. Turok #1 (VALIANT) - One of the top ten largest print runs in history, a runaway video game success that brought gamers into the fold, and the first real sign that comic properties were viable for licensing Perhaps the biggest innovation was their use of continuity. The events in the comics almost always took place during the same time frame as publication with readers expecting one month time jumps between issues. There was the rare exception to this rule, such as two back-to-back issues covering the events of the same night. In this case, the narration box would date them — for example, both issues would be dated "December 12th, 1991" if the event began in a December issue released on the 12th. Another method they used took advantage of the more hard scifi setting, and had characters experience a jump forward of several months as a side effect of traveling faster than light. An event in one comic had immediate and lasting effects in another. Once an event happened, it was set in stone. RetCons never happened, and Comic-Book Time was averted. The Valiant universe was split into two time periods: the modern day, and the 41st century, with events in the former having effects on the latter. All in all, the formula worked, attracting many fans with its refreshing and unique style, and Valiant sold over 80 million comics in its first 5 years, becoming the third highest selling comic book company (after, of course, Marvel and DC)... Writer David Michelinie Art Bart Sears Rai Cover Date: Mar '92 In his original incarnation, Rai is the spirit guardian that protects the nation of Japan in the 41st century. It is a mantle that is usually passed down from father to son through the generations, with some exceptions. As such, the series chronicled a number of protagonists. By the year 4001, industrialization in Japan had begun to consume every square inch of free space within the island nation's borders. To house and feed its growing population, the country had built upon its own infrastructure centuries before, turning the whole of Japan into a towering pillar, hundreds of miles wide. Eventually, the nation detached from Earth entirely, and now orbits the planet. Governed by a mysterious yet benevolent artificial intelligence named Father, the Japan of 4001 is divided into various sectors, with names derived from the time of founding, and generally separated among the lines of economic status and social class. Where a citizen's sector falls in the literal hierarchy of Japan's many sectors also directly affirms their social ranking; the closer you are to the Earth, the less essential you are.
