Falamos de “The Secret of NIMH” (1982) , “An American Tail” (1986), “The Land Before Time” (1988), “All Dogs Go to Heaven” (1989) e, por fim, “Anastasia” (1997). Sejam bem-vindos ao mundo anti-Disney do cinema independente de Don Bluth.

All Dogs Go to Heaven is a film with undeniable heart and artistry but struggles to find its footing. Its ambitious themes and dazzling visuals make it memorable, but tonal inconsistency and narrative clutter keep it from reaching its full potential. The film offers a unique and heartfelt experience for those willing to embrace its eccentricities. For others, it may feel like a noble effort that falls short of greatness.

Dr. Jessica Vogelsang, Chief Medical Officer at the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), joins us to discuss the evolving role of veterinarians in modern veterinary practices. Dr. Vogelsang introduces the concept of "decentering" the veterinarian to create a more team-based approach that places the patient at the heart of care, similar to patient-centered models in human medicine. She explains how this shift can improve efficiency and client satisfaction by empowering veterinary technicians and support staff to handle many tasks traditionally managed by DVMs. Together, Dr. Andy Roark and Dr. Vogelsang explore the barriers to this model, including liability concerns and the importance of training and trust in a collaborative practice. This thought-provoking conversation is a must-listen for anyone interested in the future of veterinary medicine and the evolving dynamics within the field. Riddle me this!

Brad and Jake tackle, but Brad hasn't seen any movies from 1943, so he recommends the acclaimed The Life & Times of Colonel Blimp. This unconventional epic spanning the Second Boer War and both World Wars was helmed by the Archers (Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger), and starred Roger Livesey, Anton Walbrook, and Deborah Kerr in knockout performances. Jake, with little in his 1943 arsenal, asked Brad to watch Disney's Saludos Amigos. TW child and animal and general abuse, self harm, substance abuse National Domestic Violence Hotline 800-799-7233 The Judith Barsi case is a tragic and heart-wrenching story that sheds light on the devastating consequences of domestic violence. Judith Eva Barsi, a talented child actress, gained recognition for her roles in movies like "The Land Before Time" as Ducky and "All Dogs Go to Heaven”, as Anne Marie. Her promising career was overshadowed by a tragic event that ultimately claimed her life at a young age. Judith's life was marred by the abusive and controlling behavior of her father, József Barsi. Despite her on-screen success, behind closed doors, she and her mother, Maria Barsi, endured constant emotional and physical abuse at the hands of József. The family's struggles were concealed from the public eye, as Judith continued to work in the entertainment industry. On July 25, 1988, this heartrending story took a devastating turn. József Barsi, consumed by jealousy and rage, shot and killed Judith and Maria in their home. Following the murders, he set the house on fire before turning the gun on himself, ending his own life. Judith Barsi was just 10 years old at the time of her tragic death. The news of Judith's murder shocked the entertainment industry and the public, highlighting the urgent need to address issues of domestic violence and child abuse. The case underscored how even seemingly successful and happy families can harbor dark secrets behind closed doors. In the aftermath of this tragedy, efforts were made to raise awareness about domestic violence and the importance of early intervention to protect children from abusive environments. Judith Barsi's memory lives on as a poignant reminder of the need for vigilance and support for those who may be suffering in silence. Goodbye Jeff Goldblum month, hello Don Bluth month! Welcome to Blupril! We kick off this month of dark children's movies with The Secret of NIMH (1982). If you haven't seen or heard of this before, think The Black Cauldron meets Watership Down. So, one of those weird semi-traumatic 80s children's movies that are weirdly boring for adults to revisit. However, there is a ton of voice-acting ASMR, so you do have that to look forward to (not from us). Yes, we miss Jeff. No, we don't want to talk about it. Please note that I there may be some adult content in this episode as I discuss different reasons for film ratings. The second half of this episode is purely subjective -- I fully expect my listeners to have differing opinions, and that's okay. These are just the guidelines I go by when choosing to show my kids certain movies. Welcome to season 4 of Life Through the Big Screen. Typically I've been keeping my seasons six episodes long, so being 4 seasons in isn't as impressive as it sounds. I do think that I'm going to start expanding the length of episodes per season eventually. I just love creating new introductions - and speaking of, which one has been your favorite so far? Give me some feedback. A little update about my personal life, because I let you in on it on my last solo episode: my open heart surgery is no longer scheduled for late in July - it's been pushed back to September or October. I'm not thrilled that it might overlap with the holidays - but it is what it is. It was pushed back because there's fluid in my lungs from possible COVID that needs to completely clear out before they cut me open. So I do appreciate that the doctors are taking extreme precautions. I also got a job! It's my dream job of marketing and content creation. It's for a super cool retirement firm who seems to always want to be on the cutting edge of unique ideas and new ways of reaching their target demographics. I start a week from the time of this recording. And if Zach, Dylan, and Larin are listening to this, my highest gratitude goes out to you for taking a chance on me.And thank you, listeners for continuing to take a chance on this podcast. I know your time is valuable and you dozens of other podcasts you could be listening to right now, so I am honored that your spending your time with me. I do my best with the tools I have available to bring you the best quality podcast I can. And with time I hope to continue to get better. I'm also open to hearing your feedback and any suggestions you may have, so feel free to email me at author.andrewtoy@gmail.com or leave a comment in Apple podcasts. As you know, I open up each season with me gabbing about a particular topic that I feel I want to discuss for a little bit. As you know my kids are seven and eight at the time of this recording and that means that they're becoming of age to start watching more movies that fall outside of the Disney catalogue. This also means that my wife and I can find more common ground on what we can show the kids - or at least that it's easier for her to allow more space for me to show them what I think might be appropriate, because they're no longer tiny children. They're growing kids, who, as long as they know what's on screen is fabricated with great skill and masterful imagery and film magic, they can take in what I allow to be placed in front of them. They know too that movies are meant to be vessels of enjoyment and pleasure. And Sarabeth knows that movies are my best way of connecting to the kids. The same way that Tim Taylor was obsessed with his tools and wanted to pass that love on to his boys, that's how I am with movies and my kids. It's also fun debating with them, for instance, which of the Star Wars movies are superior. My daughter claims that Kylo Ren is a great villain, but I get a little overzealous when I try to explain to her how he started off as a great character, but went downhill quickly as Disney executives started listening to the angry mobs rather than focusing on telling a great story, thus his character was ruined for time immortal. I'm looking at YOU Kathleen Kennedy and Ryan Johnson, and whosever idea it was to make Ray-lo a disgusting reality. But I do thank you on behalf of my daughter. Yesterday my son said that The Empire Strikes Back is his least favorite Star Wars movie. When I pressed him, he said it was because Yoda was boring. I'll be interested to see if and when his opinion changes on that. So what is the MPAA? You'll know it as soon as I say one color: Green. That's right, when you go the theater and that green screen with a bunch of random words nobody has ever read pops up on the screen - and if you were cool like me, you yelled "Green!" when you were in high school. The words state that the following preview - or trailer - has been approved for all audiences by the Motion Picture Association of America. The MPAA. These are the people who have been telling parents which movies they can or cannot take their kids to see. You already know by the title of my episode that I'm not going to speak very favorably about the MPAA, and I'll explain why they're full of crap, and always have been. But first, a little history on the MPAA. According to motionpicture.org, the MPAA was, and I quote: "Established in 1968, the film rating system provides parents with the information needed to determine if a film is appropriate for their children." This sounds like it had good intentions. "Ratings are determined by the Classification and Ratings Administration (CARA), via a board comprised of an independent group of parents."Before I read a little about the history of the MPAA, I'm going to breeze through a quick refresher course of what the individual rating are today: If a film is rated G, that means it's approved for general, or all, audiences: Nothing that would offend parents for viewing by children.A PG rated film stands for Parental Guidance. Where parents are "urged to give “parental guidance.” May contain some material parents might not like for their young children." A PG-13 film is not only the most common film rating, but it's also the newest. This means that parents are strongly cautioned. Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13, so parents are urged to be cautious. An R-rated film means "Restricted." This type of film contains some adult material. Parents are urged to learn more about the film before taking their young children with them. Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian. And finally NC-17 means that no one under 17 is admitted. I can't recall a mainstream film being given this rating and being shown in a local movie theater. So we're not going to touch on this one for the purposes of this podcast. Now MotionPictures.org makes this beginning part sound much moralistic than it really is, and for a good video on what went on to REALLY inspire the formation of the Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), check out a video called The History of Hollywood Censorship and the Rating System by Filmmaker IQ. I'll put a link to that down in the show notes. But this organization was formed in 1922, basically to protect the rights of corrupt elitists in Hollywood. In 1945, the organization changes its name to what we now know it today as the MPAA. In 1968, the film industry sought artistic freedoms and the removal of strict limits on certain content. The result? The MPAA created the film rating system (G, PG, PG-13, R) we use today. I got a little curious about the rating system, so I looked up some interesting stats. I looked up the most inappropriate G-rated movies. Screencrush gave me a list of 15 suggestions. I'm going to list just 10 of them. 2001 A Space Odyssey - I haven't seen this movie yet, so no comment. But according to the description it has some pretty violent deaths it it. And 3. 1968's Planet of the Apes, and 1970's Beneath the Planet of the Apes. These I haven't seen, either but apparently Charlton Heston gets shot in the throat and bleeds to death, Tarrantino-style, and entire planets of people die. Sarabeth cannot stand blood, but these movies did not traumatize her as a child, so I'm sure it's fine for kids today. 4.   Dracula has Risen From His Grave (1968). I promise you I've watched movies before, but I also have not seen this. Maybe I just tend to stay away from G-rated movies as a rule. But I'd think any Dracula film rated G is a little suspect, unless it's those Adam Sandler cartoons. 5. Romeo and Juliet from 1968 is also rated G. Not sure I'd care to watch a G-rated version of this story - and yes, that was my adolescent self talking. 6. The Andromeda Strain (1971) - Didn't see this either, but I read the book. The book was bull crap with 0 suspense. Can't imagine the movie being any different. 7. Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971). Sure it was a little unsettling when Violett turned into the blueberry, but I don't think this film is outside the range of being G-rated. My kids like it. 8. Gone with the Wind - I can get on board this one not being G-rated. This is a dark, dark movie, filled with corpses, attempted abortion, child death, racism, a lot of traumatizing stuff here. Still one of the greatest films ever made, to be clear. 9. 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea - I'm in the middle of reviewing this for an episode. So far, nothing very unsettling. 10. Old Yeller. I mean, it gets pretty freaky when they show Old Yeller baring his teeth like he's about to rip Travis' throat out. Moving along with the stats: There used to not be a PG option. The rating system actually began with four categories: G, M (for Mature audiences, which changed in 1969 to PG), R, and X. I couldn't find the first PG movie, but the first Disney-released PG movie was the Black Hole, which came out in 1970. Most people know this, but I'll talk about the history of the PG-13 rating briefly here. This is the newest on the rating system, even though it's the most populated. In 1984, parents were outraged at the PG rating of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (remember, at that time it went from PG to R). And I believe Gremlins was also part of the outrage as it was PG as well, as a little holiday horror classic with bloodthirsty puppets ravaging the small town of Kingston Falls. (But I think the most traumatizing part of that movie is when Phoebe Cates talks about her dad suffering and dying in the chimney that might have justifiably resulted in the PG-13 rating.) So after the outrage from parents, the PG-13 rating was invented and thus Red Dawn, starring Patrick Swayze, was the first to earn the most popular rating in the system. A movie called Greetings, which was released in 1968, was the first film to earn the R-rating. The Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill, held the record for the number of the uses of the F-word at a count of 569. It has been beat by two other films since then, but neither are R-rated. And finally, here is the list of the top 10 highest grossing R-rated films of all time as of July 2022: Number 10, is Fifty Shades of Grey, followed by The Hangover 2 (bad start). Then we get into better territory with The Passion of the Christ at number 8 and Logan at number 7. Number 6 is Defective Chinatown 3, whatever that is. Number 5 is appropriately It from 2017. Number 4, The Matrix Reloaded, sure whatever. And the top 3 are appropriately Deadpool raking in $78.6 million, followed by the superior Deadpool 2 at just about the same amount of earnings at just a few million more. And the highest grossing R-rated movie is also the only R-rated film that has earned its spot in the billion-dollar movie club, Joker, at just over a billion dollars. When we come back I'm going to talk about how to break movies down when deciding what to show my kids. *Commercial Break*One thing the MPAA has improved on is that now they'll actually list the reasons a film is rated what it is. That wasn't always the case. Our poor parents would take us to Blockbuster and see that Mr. & Mrs. Smith, for instance, was rated PG-13, but it wouldn't state why. Was it sequences for action/violence? Sensuality? Sexual references? So you see, the rating, without the reasoning, is pretty useless. Take for example The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Twister, two PG-13 movies that came out within a year of each other. Both have the same ratings, but for very different reasons and to extremely differing degrees. If you're the kind of parent who doesn't want their kids seeing people die on screen, The Lost World: Jurassic Park won't be the movie to watch with your kids. Peter Stormare gets savagely attacked by the compys, Arliss Howard gets toyed and played with by a baby T-rex before he's eaten by it and the mommy T-rex. My favorite character in the movie, played by Richard Schiff gets the worst death in the Jurassic Park trilogy when the two T-rexes flip him in the air and rip his body apart. Not to mention several deaths of people in the camp and in the *sigh* San Diego scene. It also has more blood than the first movie, but it's not nearly as scary. Twister, by contrast, has an unusually low body count, especially for a disaster film. Helen Hunt's dad dies his needless death in the movie's opening, and no one else dies except for Cary Elwes much later in the film, and it's sort of off-screen. Those are the only two deaths in the entire movie -- everyone else lives happily ever after, and completely bloodless. Yet, despite the high body count and flowing blood, I'll show The Lost World: Jurassic Park to my kids before I show them Twister. Why? Because Twister, as silly of a movie as it is (though don't knock it too hard, because it's my favorite natural disaster movie), is based off of real-life threats. Living in the mid-west, or south, we get tornado warnings pretty regularly. When I showed my kids the original Jurassic Park, they didn't go to bed afraid that they'd be attacked by dinosaurs. Real life disasters, however, might have a different affect on them. I could be wrong, but I know from experience when my parents had me watch Unsolved Mysteries or Eyewitness News, I sometimes had a hard time going to sleep because I knew the things were credible, though distant. Now let's compare a couple of R-rated movies to some PG-13 ones and I want you to tell me which one you'd rather have your young kids watch with you. Would you rather watch Swimfan with your kids, or Mel Gibson's The Patriot? If you said The Patriot, that's R-rated for "strong war violence." But that strong war violence is momentary and brief. But Swimfan is PG-13 for mature thematic elements, sexual content, disturbing images, and language. Would you feel more comfortable showing The King's Speech to your kids, or The Dark Knight? Can you believe that The King's Speech is the R-rated one, and The Dark Knight is deemed appropriate for children as young as 13? The King's Speech has a few F-words, which is always meant for humor. My kids have heard Sarabeth and I use much harsher language. But for those of you who've seen The Dark Knight, you'd agree that that movie could be scarring for young audiences. And the MPAA reasoning is only half-truthful. It reads that the Dark Knight is PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and some menace, but it makes no mention at all of terrifying imagery. I'm sorry, but Two Face is much scarier than any monster I've seen depicted in an R-rated film. Let's do one more comparison, shall we? Would you rather show your kids the PG-rated Poltergeist, or the R-rated Planes, Trains, & Automobiles? The MPAA has not bothered to go back and re-rate 1982's Poltergeist, despite the moderate use of violence, and severe and frequent use of frightening and intense scenes. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, however, is only appropriate for adults, according to the MPAA, because Steve Martin cusses out the car rental lady. So are you starting to see what I mean when I say ratings mean nothing? My kids' first PG-13 theater experience was Ghostbusters: Afterlife and it was for my son's 6th birthday and my daughter was 7. Felix got a little freaked out during the big climax, but I told him to hang in there, and before he knew it, it was over, and now he wants to own the movie and watch it again. Some people may say that the rating system is completely subjective, but I say it's not subjective enough. There's no board of parents anywhere that can predict or dictate what would be okay or not okay for my kids to watch. Sometimes it's not based off the content at all, but more about the message being delivered. I've told you that I've shown my kids the first two Jurassic Park movies because 95% of the human relationships are people helping people. There is very little human infighting. The struggle is between man and creature, and the overall idea is people depending on the kindness and bravery of others. That's a good message that I want to subconsciously sink into my kids' heads. But I'll skip the first beginning part of Home Alone where Kevin is a complete asshole to his mom. "Content-wise" and I'm doing air-quotes, it's acceptable, because it lacks violence or sexuality, but the message behind it is something my kids aren't ready to see because if they watch that part enough, they'll think it's acceptable to talk to their parents the way Kevin does. Also, he doesn't really get punished for that particular crime - his punishment, if you want to call it that, is unrelated to the way he treats and talks to his family. (Best Christmas movie ever, by the way.)I know this is sort of a lot, and I hope you're tracking with me. I hope this helps you see past just the rating system that the MPAA offers. Another example is this. The Lord of the Rings, compared to Jurassic Park, is relatively bloodless. However, it's going to be many years before I show that trilogy to my kids. Why? It's action and adventure and fantasy, you'd think it'd be a great candidate to show the kiddos. Well, it never let's up. Pretty much once the hobbits leave the Shire within the first 30 minutes of Fellowship, it's nothing but heartache and stress and nightmare visions until the last 30 minutes of Return of the King. And there's no comic relief to relieve the heavy tension. Also, it gets pretty convoluted and drawn-out. So even if the stress didn't get to them, I don't want them to get bored on their first viewing and not have an appreciation of the films from the start. I want to make sure their brains are developed and mature enough to be able to grasp the magnitude of the story beyond just the sword fights. In the previous episode about Spider-Man: No Way Home, Dean Letini brought up a great point that there are many movies in the MCU that he has yet to show his 9 year old, notably Winter Soldier because some guy gets kicked into the propeller of a helicopter. PG-13. You know what else is PG-13 in the MCU? Ant Man. That's right. The giant Thomas the Train bouncing off the tracks in the little girl's room warranted the same rating as Winter Soldier, or The Sixth Sense. Why? It's one word, and it'll come as no surprise: Money. You better believe that the studio execs at Disney know full well that if they release an MCU movie with a PG rating, it'll lose a lot of money. When's the last time a G-rated movie snuck into theaters? I don't know either. Frozen is PG. Ice Age is PG. Zootopia is PG. They're all PG because it's a chance that it'll get more butts int he seats - those kids teetering on adolences who might be skeptical going to see an animated movie. You know what's rated G? Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. Pinocchio. All Dogs Go to Heaven. Those movies are nightmare-inducing! Pinocchio was banned in Germany for any child at the time of its release - it had an equivalent of an R-rating. But what kid do you know that got a single nightmare from Moana? So the rating system is stupid. Lightyear is PG, but I don't give a crap because I'm not taking my kids to see a movie where lesbians are normalized. That doesn't make me a bigot and I'll tell you why. Sexuality is complicated enough without a million different influences and ideas barraging our kids. Sexuality needs to not be discussed in front of or around kids for the simple reason that kids need to be kids. We need to keep their minds clear of all that stuff. They've got the rest of their lives to figure it all out, and wrestle with it and grapple with what sexuality is and what it means to them. If we're in such a hurry for our kids to grow up, why the hell not hand them over the keys to our cars? Put them to work in the factories? Take out a portion of their allowance for taxes? Actually, that last idea isn't half bad. But please understand what I'm saying. Once human beings are of age, where their brains are fully developed and they can reason on their own and take in entertainment with critical thinking and they've been properly educated on the basics of sexuality, then we can loosen things up a little bit.I'm not a bigot because Oscar is my favorite supporting character in The Office. Those two guys in Modern Family? They were hilarious. The fact that Negasonic Teenage Warhead has a lesbian lover in Deadpool and the way Ryan Reynolds plays it is awesome. Deadpool himself is practically bi or A-sexual or something, and I love him anyway. But my kids don't need to see any of that because they barely know how a mommy and a daddy make a baby. They're still at level one knowledge. There's absolutely no reason for them to know anything more than that at this age. And I understand that they're likely not going to turn to me and ask why two women are married and kissing in a cartoon movie, but the thought will stick with them, and it will grow overtime the more they see that. My religion teaches that it's wrong to be in a same-sex relationship, and I'll teach my kids the same, but when they're of age, it's ultimately going to be their choice. All I can do is teach them what I know to be morally right and to love those who don't see it that way. So the rating system is based off of 4 or 5 main elements. Violence. We spoke pretty extensively about violence so I won't go over it again except to add that there are different styles and different degrees. I'll let my kids watch people get eaten by dinosaurs (and keep in mind, they know that it's fake), but I won't be showing them any Tarrentino-style movies any time soon. That's a style of violence that I don't think would be good for my kids to see - with blood squirting out of arteries and flooding the ground. Not because it's realistic, but it's just a lot. And most of it is caused by human on human violence - that goes back to the message behind the movie. I don't want my kids thinking we applaud or glorify humans murdering one another. Just as there's different styles of violence, there's also different degrees of it. Yes, I'm okay with my kids watching dinosaurs or creatures eating people, but even that can be taken too far for them at this age. I wouldn't dare show them the bear attack in The Revenant, for instance, because that's way too realistic and could be traumatizing. Or even the pig-creature attack in Annihilation, or any of the Alien franchise just yet. Why? Because that's a level of gore and creepiness that's above Jurassic Park. It's also prolonged. When someone gets eaten in Jurassic Park, it's usually pretty quick and the movie movies on. I admit that this is all purely subjective. You may think Jurassic Park is too gory for your kids, and I won't tell you you're wrong. Only you know what your kids will be able to handle. We've talked about sex, in movies. It's not that my wife and I are sensitive to the subject. No, it's that we're unabashedly over-protective of our kids when it comes to it. And when they're ready to talk about it, we'll be ready to lead them in a frank and honest discussion that we're not afraid to have with them. The point here is that we want to be the first source our kids get that information from. Thankfully there are a lot of movies - PG, PG-13, or even R that don't mention or show anything sensual. But be weary of the PG movies from our youth. We turned on a random movie from Disney + not too long ago. It was a movie that starred Jonathan Taylor Thomas and Chevy Chase called Man of the House. Now to be fair, I remember watching it as a kid and it didn't affect me, but we turned it off 15 minutes in, first because it was boring, but secondly, it seemed like all they were talking about was how JTT didn't want Chevy Chase to sleep with Farrah Fawcett. It was just a little TMI in this JTT "family comedy." Air quotes again. And honestly, even when my kids do come of age, there's a ton of stuff I'll be uncomfortable watching with them. I'll never forget how awkward it got watching Friends with my parents on Thursday nights - especially the later episodes - and particularly when I learned how to *ahem* do certain things, and the show addressed that more and more. So, so awkward. As far as language goes in movies, this is sort of a funny story, and it's not to shame my kids, but to celebrate their innocence. They've seen plenty of PG-13 movies where there's cursing throughout - I even showed them the PG-rated Back to the Future films which are basically just damn and shit every other line (that's not a fundamentalist complaint, by the way, that's just an observation). But you know where my kids have heard the majority of cursing? That's right, from their mom and dad, during our dark days leading up to our separation and even a bit afterwards on some bad days. And we use every word in the book and then some. Thankfully it's not like that any more, but if any kid had reason to mimic curse words, it would be ours. But recently we asked them to list off some bad words they know - we did this with wry smiles and curiosity - they could only come up with "stupid" and "dumb." I wonder if they know more than they're letting on. I showed them Raiders of the Lost Ark not too long ago and Harrison Ford goes, "God Damn it," at one point, and of course my son laughs because of the line delivery and he goes, "He just said God damn it." Sarabeth promptly explained that that's not something we say, and he hasn't since. Every movie is going to have cursing. You're going to hear cursing when you take your kids to Taco Bell or to the beach. It's everywhere. Just remember, it's not a sin for them to hear it. And I believe when they're older, it's not even a sin for them to curse. I curse all the time, though I do try to limit it in front of the kids. Lastly, ratings can be determined on drug use, and now tobacco use. I've really got no reason to show my kids Pineapple Express or any stoner movie. And seeing Peter Pan smoking a bong never made me want to go out and try it myself. Nor did the racist depictions make me think racist thoughts against Native Americans. But really, are the Indians in Neverland REALLY Native Americans? Shouldn't they be called Native Neverlandians? All that to say, the MPAA can look like they're nit-picking things and trying to be more protective, but in my opinion, they're nitpicking the wrong things. It's up to each parent to decide what's important to restrict from their children, because only each parent knows their children. Not the MPAA, and certainly not Hollywood. Thanks for tolerating this little lecture about my thoughts on movie ratings. If you have different thoughts or opinions, I'd love to hear them. S3Ep86 All Doggos Go To ... , Pastor Newms [0:00] Hello and welcome, to season 3 episode 86 of the Berean Manifesto faith hope and love for the modern Christian. This is pastor newms and I'm here to deliver an interesting thought process. Interesting. Topic tonight last week's was pretty heavy and so I decided to go a little bit lighter with this week's for a question that is you know. Plagues us all sooner or later in time and my personal thoughts on it but so first thing. You're my week is good we got a lot of stuff done around the house getting ready for the next school year. And such starting to get that process going so that way we can be ready to home school the girls next year and just a lot of a lot of stuff going on in my house. Played some games not a lot of streaming games just because it was you know, kind of boring stuff I was doing and random times I didn't stream it all this week hopefully this next week I will but. Overall my work week was good and the week itself was good just real busy.  [1:30] I hope you guys all had a great week as well.  [1:35] But that's just kind of how my week went was kind of boring I didn't do anything Fantastical or anything.  [1:46] I don't think I can't remember anything I don't know alright see you, now onto the part of the show that I still don't like even though I'm continuing to do it every week because it's part of the show which is getting another pastor's the question tonight. Is what is one item you own that you really should throw away. But probably never will. So here's the problem with this question what is something that I should throw away but I probably won't. And the answer is everything. I keep way too much stuff. I collect things I treasure things very easily and I. End up.  [2:54] Having just boxes of stuff yes as Phoenix said it is a family trait she does a similar thing, I Won't Say I'm quite at hoarder status. Because I don't keep.  [3:17] Like newspapers boxes cans I've used you know things like that in piles but like.  [3:27] Anything that might be collectible I keep in the Box typically I keep.  [3:36] Things like that has Zaydiee says she's not like, me and Phoenix and we need to clean out a bunch of junk we never use which the reason we haven't is she knows if we were to start that process it would be nothing but a never-ending fight until we were done and, that'll be an interesting, time when she decides it's time to throw away a bunch of stuff because every time she does it gets to be pretty heated, nrm marriage during times when she wants to purge and I want to hoard. It was really really bad when we got married I came to the marriage with like 20 something. 24 totes of Collections and.  [4:36] Just stuff like I have two totes of t-shirts from high school never some of them are band shirts that's why and we are down to like five totes because I eliminated over time and certain things are just real important and so they're out and about if I could once I get everything set up, you know as we build out the house more and more over time some of that stuff will become.  [5:11] Integrated into the house I've got a lot of. Legos and lots of other things like that that are in boxes comic books things that are all plastic totes nothing's in boxes boxes, but hopefully soon we'll get all that put places I'll be rearranging my office soon, and when I do that it'll be time to it'll give me some time to be able to do some of that, purging an unboxing and figuring out OK is this box actually important is this thing in Port you know blah blah blah but I have a lot of stuff just stuff so yeah stuff. I think that's it for getting another pastors I think I think I think I think.  [6:16] Which then leads us to. The message for the night the conversation we want to have whatever you want to call it the part of the time of talking so. I wanted to talk about do doggos go.  [6:39] Blank now the term dog oh might be like the taco dogs are doggos dog. So it's play on that do all dogs go to heaven aspect because doggos is a is a thing and it's interesting because this is one of those situations where. Everyone has. Lots of people have opinions across all of history on what happens to pets every religion you know it gets asked because people love pets. So I thought we'd start with looking at what some religions outside of Christianity belief starting with Islam, um now this this synopsis I found so I don't know. I kind of grabbed a couple different sources and kind of pushed it all together as we all do with internet research so it's not like one place but, a bunch of stuff that I could find as I was researching so Islam doesn't and doesn't offer a clear answer in the Quran.  [7:59] But in order to go to, Heaven their version of Heaven beings must be judged by God on Judgment Day and so then there's a dissent among, Scholars on whether animals would or would not be judged but, the Quran does say that people that go people who enter Paradise can have whatever they want and then logically some people would argue that than it is. The pets. Because if you've had lots of pets over time you love all of them they've passed at some point or another of course that's what you want once you are in Paradise so that is the, Buddhism and Hinduism they both have a thought process of reincarnation in them and so over time you your, they do believe animals have a soul in are sentient and that it is part of The Reincarnation cycle and so in that they would not because.  [9:14] We are all animals are. Just part of our cycle of reincarnation so their thought processes is once you get to Nirvana you would be at a point of above that thought process, Judaism is similar to, Islam and what we're going to get to here in a few minutes with Christianity on whether it's kind of fuzzy.  [9:45] And you know there are some people who go so far as to. You know whether there is a true heaven or hell as other religions Define it other than just paradise and she'll which we've talked about in past. Broadcast and and so there's that aspect but some rabbis say that you know. Animals can go to those places some people say some Rabbi say animals can't but in Judaism there is the belief that animals do have, Souls from what I can understand and that's part of the whole kosher. In the blood because that's where the souls are you know held kind of and same with us you know life is in the blood those aspects and so in Judaism there is.  [10:45] The thought process that animals do have souls but it's unknown whether they can go to the paradise or the next phase. And then we get to Christianity where again, it's fuzzy because there are Scholars who believe yes there are scholarship believe know there are Scholars who believe no they don't have souls animals don't have souls but they do have.  [11:17] Similar to the Islamic belief of well but once you get to heaven it is Paradise and what would Paradise be without our pets and so there are all those types of, conversations so what I kind of wanted to look at quickly and this is going to be a shorter one because let's be honest this is kind of a funny. A funny topic that I just kind of want to talk about because it's a question that children ask a lot it's a question that other people ask a lot and so I just wanted to give people a thought of you know let's think about it. And there's a couple places in scripture where animals are talked about a lot. They of course were created before man. In Genesis and then I'm going to use very interesting story which. Is an odd one to use for this but.  [12:39] Thought process and balaam's donkey and so then when we look at. In 23 the story of Numbers 22 23 the story of Balaam, it said that the Lord opened the donkey's mouth so the exact thought is when the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the path of the Dawn, with a drawn sword in his hand she turned off the path and went to the field so Balaam hit her the angel of the Lord stood.  [13:15] The narrow passage between The Vineyards in the stone wall on either side of the donkey saw the angel of the Lord and pressed him herself against the wall squeezing balaam's foot against it so he hit her, once again the angel of the Lord went ahead and sit in the narrow place so there's no room to turn right or left when the donkey saw the angel of the Lord she crouched down under Balaam so he became Furious and beat the donkey with his stick, the Lord then the Lord opened the donkey's mouth, and she asked Balaam what have I done to you that you have beaten me these three times and Balaam answered which this part of the find interesting Balaam answered the donkey and wasn't freaked out about the fact that there isn't donkey, talking to him you made me look like a fool if I had my sword in my hand I'd kill you and the donkey said I'm, am I not the donkey you've written all your life have I ever treated you this way before no he replied and the Lord opened balaam's eyes and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the path with a drawn sword in his hand so. You know the reason I'm looking at this story of Balaam is this is one of the the times that. Animals have a direct Forefront.  [14:36] Part of the story where they are actually. So what are the only times they have a speaking role in the scriptures other than the serpent in the.  [14:55] In Genesis that was possessed and then the there's the. The, the prophetic aspect of the Dragon in Revelation which might or might not actually be, a physical creature or just the spiritual thought process of it which is another interesting discourse all in its own. So in that where it says the Lord opened the donkey's mouth the term for open that's used is I'm going to. I'm going to butcher this because I barely speak English properly but it's.  [15:51] Pause fuck its primary route to open literally and figuratively specifically to loosen. To plow to carve to Break Forth to draw out to let go free it's use about 143 times in the KJV. Version where Strong's has talked about so go with me on this thought process so the Lord opened the donkey's mouth so. My thought process here is if you open the mouth. That means it had to be closed it doesn't say gave the ability to speak it says open which implies that animals have that sentient aspect.  [16:50] And so replies it was closed now.  [16:55] We don't we don't have in the Bible listed a definite time that the miles were closed but. We know that it's talking about here and the serpent the serpent the only other time. And one of the main things that separates us for Animals is the stability of you know speech it's not the only thing but it's one of those big things of understanding and languages and, fought over whether or not animals have souls or if they have reasoning or if they run sheerly off of instinct more than thought, but to me this story shows the attitude of the ass and the fact that she strove to serve her master well and so in that to me, um that rejects that thought process that animals only run on, now those of us that have pets and do more of treating our pets like they are part of the family as opposed to actual pets. Like my family does this is not something that is.  [18:24] I surprised because we treat our animals like they have full attitudes all the time and so, you know we we often joke about things like that and you do notice in animals a distinct. Attitude often and so because of that I've always had that thought process of that animals had. The ability of speech and have their own personalities and have their own. Aspects of their personality just like their human counterparts which then leads us to. That thought process that day. Might have mental reasoning above.  [19:20] That of just logic now as humans we are three parts we are Body Spirit and soul, and so one could argue well maybe they have the spirit but not the soul or one could argue they have just the soul and not the spirit depending on which usage of each word that you use whether one is the connection to your your mind will and emotion and then the other is your connection to, God and you know the spirit, and so there's the always that thought process when you start to talk about souls and those types of things and we've kind of talked about Soul versus spirit before in past broadcasts, and so you have to kind of look at you know is there a true, difference which we know there is between the spirit and the Soul so is it possible that the animals just have, the mind will and emotions but do not have an actual connection to the higher power that humans have. So we're going to talk about the soul specifically now to kind of.  [20:39] Go into that the word that she translated into Soul most of the time is nephesh. And it's properly a breathing creature that is an animal, used very widely in literally mental and physical or an appetite it's used in the kjv 753.  [21:08] Examples of this is TLeviticusis 26:11 so we'll look at that real quick as one of the aspects that we have Leviticus, 26:11 no that can't be right that's going to be a typo.  [21:34] Is it how did you jump over to my parallel here sorry. 26  [21:47] Hmm.  [21:59] I'm looking for where I was actually I miss type something so let's find. Where it might be it's not into is it in six.  [22:44] We looking for.  [23:15] Okay. So here we have it is it's 26:11 sorry and I will set my Tabernacle among you and my soul, shall not a poor you and that Soul let's listed there is the 2315. Which is interesting because that is.  [23:42] You know the Lord talking to us so his soul he uses that word of a breathing creature. Then when we look at Deuteronomy 6:5 would help fight look at the right, versions so that's the video Kiss 26/11 we go to Deuteronomy 6.  [24:13] Five. We have love the Lord thy God with all thy heart with all your soul and with all their strength and that word soul is the same that connection of the breathing. The breath that is in us and then if we look at Leviticus we jump back to Leviticus and we look at 27. 1:33 and say to them I have messed up my notes something terrible guys I'm very sorry.  [25:40] Do do do do do do do do do.  [26:00] There is a place where it is used for creature in Leviticus and that's what I'm trying to find and I am sorry that I have messed this up so royally.  [27:01] 5314 I'm looking at it would help if I was looking at the correct.  [27:13] Leviticus 26 11 let's go back there yeah using concordances incorrectly.  [27:44] So let's look at Genesis 1:20 so the verdict is 26 and then we had Deuteronomy I forgot to type these references and then we're going to jump to Genesis 1. And there it says. And God said let the waters bring forth abundantly and moving creatures that hath life and fowl that may fly above the Earth in the open firmament of heaven and that creatures that have life is again that, that's that aspect of the Soul, it's the same word that's translated for soul for humans as well as used for man in certain places and used for animals, creatures that liveth so what's that. Implying that that Soul or spirit that it is speaking of at that point is what defines life and so when we look at that that's what.  [29:10] That's where that conversation lies so we don't have to me we don't have biblical proof that animals don't. Have a soul in that so because of that there's no. Proof that they don't have the ability to move into the spiritual realm upon death so this is one of those situations where.  [29:49] We don't know. And that's okay some of these aspects are things that we have to have beliefs about and we have to have faith in what we have and what we believe but this is one of those situations where we don't have definitive. Proof we know humans will go through a judgment we know. Aspects like that but we don't know whether or not animals will just you know it's that, you know old school movie all All Dogs Go to Heaven well all dogs are good dogs so they go to heaven you know, there's that thought process and so this is one of those that's of course not a Salvation aspect so this is one of those just thought experiments more than anything else of what do you believe why do you believe it, situations like that and the question was posed to me one time and that's why I had even looked any of this up in the past and, have then kind of used it to to look at that but personally for me I feel that animals will. Because we know there are animals in heaven. That is talked about in scripture and I closed my.  [31:19] Bible program so I'm sorry technical difficulties just all over the place today we know that there is a time in.  [31:35] Scripture where if we look at the end.  [31:51] And that comes from I'm trying to find it again because I. Closed it after I opened it and this was not part of my.  [32:15] To do to do.  [32:18] Do do do do this wasn't part of my notes it just came to me while I was talking.  [32:36] And it is found in.  [33:00] 2 2 2 2 2 2 2 2.  [33:27] So  [33:48] 52 do okay the one place I decided not to look quickly is of course where it's talked about this is that whole thing about doing church together. It looks like I'm just wrong.  [34:43] So this is one of those weird. Aspects of Christianity where we talk about something over and over again but it is not accurate. In fun learning things together right guys so when Isaiah 11:6. The the passage talks about this is talking about the Thousand-Year Kingdom of Christ on Earth so this is before the final Heaven before the Ascension the final Ascension. But in Isaiah 11:6 it actually says not the lion but the wolf. The wolf it's actually talked about in a couple places Isaiah 6 11 and Isaiah 65 25 both of them say. The wolf and the lamb shall graze together which.  [35:58] Is interesting because we always hear line in the lamb the thought process.  [36:08] Possibly is when you look at you know it's just one of those things we're taught that's not actually document anywhere.  [36:24] Some people say the reason why it's gotten messed up is.  [36:32] In Revelation 5 and 6 when it's talking about the Scrolls being opened and it says and then one of the elders said to me do not weep, look the lion of the tribe of Judah the root of David has conquered so that he might be able to open the scroll and it's Seven Seals and then I saw one like a slaughtered lamb standing in the midst of the throne and four living creatures and among the elders he had seven horns and seven eyes which are the seven spirits of God sent into all the Earth um and then they open the scroll and so it's it's that aspect of combining, you know the Lord is talked about as The Lion and the lamb and then the wolf and the lamb slain down with each other, either that or it's yet another Mandela effect of I've jumped time streams and. You know they did turn the hydrogen the height of the.  [37:26] The collider in CERN is back on so who knows but it's actually not talked about in scripture about the line in the lamps that's one of those things that unless I cannot find it and Google has failed us all while I'm doing research on the Fly which is. Interesting. So it's supposed to be a wolf I guess it doesn't make for his good of pictures maybe of a wolf in Lamb's but. I think that's also kind of better, so we know for a fact in the Thousand Years when God recreates Earth there will be animals but actual end time Heaven you know eternity that is up in the air. But we can hope and that's that's what we do, you know we have faith we hope and we love I hope all my animals are there waiting on me because I want them all just a house full of animals from my whole life.  [38:35] So that is my. Discussion for tonight does anyone did anyone else that's listening all several of you guys know that it was wolf and not lamb am I the only one who thought lamb. I mean thought lion and lamb. I know Phoenix is out there and I know zadie is did both of you guys feel that.  [39:11] It was lying instead of wolf am I the only one has everyone left me.  [39:25] Phoenix says she knows it was wolf what what.  [39:36] What can I guess it was me. Lady says she agrees she remembers it being lying always taught lying in the lamb what zaidi why do you feel that wolf makes more sense. The verse we're talking about so well both Phoenix we are talking about you know.  [40:02] I was trying to find the scripture where it talks about the lion and the lamb which doesn't exist. And I thought the saying came from a verse. Because of what it implies but it does not.  [40:26] And so that's interesting because I always remember being taught it was lion and lamb in Revelation. It appears zaidi says wait what did you find 80 what does it imply.  [40:47] What does the verse imply well let's look at it again if we look at that was Isaiah 11. Six we can reread it 11:6. The wolf will dwell with the lamb the leopard will lie down with the goat the calf the lung Young Lion and the fatted calf will be together. And a child will lead them the cow and the bear will graze their young ones will lie together the line, eat straw like cattle an infant will play by the cobras pit and a toddler will put his hand into the snakes then they will not harm or destroy each other. On my entire Holy Mountain for the land will be as full of the knowledge of the Lord as the sea is full of water, and the root of Jesse will stand as a banner and the Nations will look to him.  [41:59] Extend his hand to the remnant of people who survived this is all talk about the Thousand Years Isaiah prophesy sometimes. Interesting and and I agree Phoenix it does make sense when you think about it from the stack standpoint of the wolf is who usually fights against. Lambs other than a couple of times where it is a mountain lion.  [42:37] No no it's not a version aspect but I do agree he's 80 it has. More sense along the line of the other stories of Wolfson Lambs it does make a lot more sense and maybe it's just that whole thing about the lion is talked about later with the calf which makes more sense because let's be honest lions. Fight calf's more than sheep.  [43:06] And and yes Sadie in Narnia it is definitely a lamb and a sheep. And not a mountain lion but an actual I can't find. A verse with the line of the lamb but. Feel free to reach out to me you can find out how to contact us on EKK.House and. If I cannot find it and that would be good I'm sure someone out there would messages if possibly. You're the one who said Narnia and you're going to tell me I'm going to make you I'm sorry okay so we record this podcast every Sunday night at 6:30. And we. Many people have wondered or hoped that beloved animals that die continue to live on in heaven, but a common opinion is that they don't. Jimmy Akin and Dom Bettinelli look at that claim and ask if there is any evidence that animals do, in fact, survive death. The post All Dogs Go to Heaven? (Ghost Dogs! There is love in sharing, especially when it is not yours! Can you imagine if you were the only person on earth surrounded by all the luxury and abundance of life? Just you, yourself, and you without no one to share with, nowhere for that energy to flow dynamically and create something unique? Well, your silence will be the music and song that will most likely drown you. Life was designed to be shared, give, and receive in return, not in monotony now, instead of in a dynamic rhythm that creates enjoyable patterns that we somewhat look forward to the next experience. It was not designed to be a self-centered experience. Instead, an experience that can only be appreciated and understood in an atmosphere where self is de-emphasized and sharing in the form of giving is exalted, pointing to a commonality that should be the denominator on which we all should stand and expected to thrive. The above sounds like a fairy tale, right? But seriously, this is the authentic design of life. The generation we live in presently has taken the focus off this philosophy and now has made the 'self,' 'me' myself, and I storyline the narrative. Everyone is looking for 'his' or 'her' 'ISH' to be projected, not minding who gets hurt, more like the end justifies the means kind of mindset. In this episode of the Word Café Podcast, my focus will be on this, yes, what is your 'ISH'? What Is that thing that drives you and puts value in your pocket that makes your heart jump for joy?Like Charlie said in All Dogs Go to Heaven, a 1989 Disney animation movie - What's Mine Is Yours, what is yours is mine; the more we share, the more we will get!Support the show

Judith Barsi was a child star on the rise, having been discovered at the age of 5 at a skating rink in the San Fernando Valley. She's said to have been in over 70 commercials, but she's most known for her voiceover work in The Land Before Time as Ducky and All Dogs Go to Heaven as Anne-Marie. That all came to an abrupt halt in 1988 when she and her mother were killed by her own father. This week, Briana takes us through a tragic case of abuse that consumed a bright star far too soon. If you were a child of the 80s, you might remember an animated film called All Dogs Go to Heaven. Its theatrical release in 1989 was overshadowed by The Little Mermaid, which came out on the same day. Nevertheless, the VHS release was a huge success, which is how I came to watch this movie on repeat every Saturday morning growing up. This film is about a fun-loving, fast-talking dog who is murdered by his former friend. Instead of going to Heaven, he cons his way into staying on Earth so that he can avenge his death. Along the way, he teams up with colorful characters, including a sweet orphan girl who teaches him about kindness, friendship, and love. The film's ending credits song “Love Survives” was dedicated to Judith Barsi, the young actress who played the orphan girl. As a child, I had no idea what this dedication meant. Years later, I was shocked and saddened to learn that All Dogs Go to Heaven was Judith's last film before she and her mother were murdered by her father in a double murder-suicide. ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED 05/06/2021 It's a very special episode of 90 Under 90 as we go without a guest host this week to pay tribute to our late mother. "All Dogs Go to Heaven" was her all-time favorite movie, so it would feel wrong to have someone else talk about it. Unfortunately we could never talk about it with her on this podcast, so instead, we dive into Don Bluth's supremely strangely-themed animated feature starring Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise.

This week, Drewby and Yergy discuss the tragic life and death of Judith Eva Barsi, who was an American child actress of the 1980s. The child of Hungarian immigrants, Barsi was very small for her age, and often played much younger roles. She began her career in television, making appearances in commercials and television series such as Punky Brewster, as well as in the films Jaws: The Revenge, The Land Before Time and All Dogs Go to Heaven, providing the voices for animated characters in the latter two (Ducky and Anne Marie). She and her mother, Maria, were killed in July 1988 as a result of a double murder–suicide perpetrated in their home by her father, József Barsi, an abusive alcoholic who was jealous of his daughter's success. Barsi was only 10 years old, with a promising career ahead of her. Judith and her mother were buried in the Forest Lawn - Hollywood Hills Cemetery in Los Angeles, with grave markers that were crowdfunded by fans in 2004 - their graves being previously unmarked since 1988.
