If you're looking for the greatest baseball dynasty, you have to consider the Alou brothers. Three exceptional ball players—Felipe, Matty and Jesús—hold a joint first as the first 'three brothers on one team' when they all played for the Giants against the Mets on September 10, 1963. Between them, they gather World Series rings, All-Star appearances, and batting championships before moving into the back offices of various clubs and influencing countless up-and-coming players, including Felipe's son Luis (who would go on to manage the New York Mets in 2019). It's Felipe Alou we're going to highlight. As well as seventeen years playing in the majors, his fourteen years of managing put him in rare company… only himself, Joe Torre, and Frank Robinson have racked up 2000 hits, 200 home runs, and 1,000 managerial wins. All that is ahead of him. For today's classic game, Alou is Milwaukee's lead-off hitter as they visit Shea Stadium in a doubleheader against the New York Mets. The Braves took the first game 8-2. Can they build on their 10-10 record for the year? Over to WGY Radio for the second game. You can find the boxscore here: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYN/NYN196505092.shtml This game was played on 9 May, 1965. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/classicbaseballradio/message

August 19th, 1917 While Coaching at third base for Detroit in a 1-1 tie against The Senators, Ty Cobb shoves base runner George Burns as he pulled up at third on a long hit. Burns headed home scoring the winning run. Senators Manager and future Hall of Famer Clark Griffith protested and American League President Ban Johnson upheld the protest, as the rule bans coaches from touching a runner. The game is replayed and Washington wins 2-0. On August 19th, 1921 Ty Cobb becomes the youngest player to collect 3000 hits singling off Red Sox hurler Elmer Myers at the age of 34.The New York Giants Board of Directors votes 9-1 in favor of moving the team to San Francisco on August 19th, 1957. August 19th, 1982 - Scheduled to pitch against the Expos at home, Braves rookie Pascual Perez misses his scheduled start when he can't find his way to the ballpark. Perez circled the stadium on the interstate several times but was lost. He will be given a Braves jacket with the new number I-85 on it. Phil Niekro steps in and wins, 5-4, running his record to 11and 3. August 19th, 1987, Paul Molitor leads the Brewers, collecting four hits in a 13–4 drubbing of Cleveland. Molitor extends his hitting streak to 34 games tying Dom DiMaggio for 11th on the all-time list. August 19th, 1998 Starting Pitcher Dustin Hermanson of the Montreal Expos allows three hits in seven innings in an 8–2 victory. This was Felipe Alou's 521st career win as manager of the Montreal Expos, most in franchise history. Hermanson was clearly Alou's good luck charm as he was also the starting and winning pitcher in Alou's 400th, 450th, and 500th win. August 19th, 2000 Jeff Bagwell hits two home runs and drives home five runs in the Astros 10-8 victory over the Brewers. Bagwell is the first Astro to reach 300 homers in his career.

Of all the players to try and show up Gabe Kapler, Zack Littell was probably not on your bingo card. So kick back, relax, and get ready to soak in God's Word with some good friends. It's the Bible and you with Deacon Steve and Marianne Greco.Deacon Steve: 0:20Hi, this is Deacon Steve Greco, and Marianne, and welcome to the Bible and you. I'm beyond excited.Mary Anne: 0:29all excited. AndDeacon Steve: 0:31what's the what? Why is the purple in the background. It's the first Sunday of the first Sunday of Lent. We've already had Ash Wednesday. And now we're right into Lent, and that first Sunday. And the readings are unbelievably powerful. But I just want to share with you after opening prayer a little bit about the history of Lent. So let's pray. Father, Son, Holy Spirit, amen. Heavenly Father, we ask special blessings upon everyone to be filled with the Holy Spirit, to have a land filled with joy. Filled with reverence, filled with fasting and penance and almsgiving. Filled with everything to build up. Each individual family marriage, the body of Christ may be blessed with all the blessings and love of the Father, Son, Holy Spirit, in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit, a man I can't say all Alou here anymore. Well, technically, you can't say hallelujah during the mass. But so I'll probably not say it. But you know, I'm thinking that so little bit on the history of land. Let actually was made official in 313, at the Council of Nicea. And the reason for that is that, at that particular time, they were using the 40 days, which of course, we know the significance of that. And Marianne, I'm sure will go into more detail on that. But you know, you hear 40 throughout scripture, and it certainly means a long time. But the preparation for those who are being baptized, and you think of Holy Saturday, right, Easter weekend, as Lent is ending. And we have the baptisms into the church, while at the time of the fourth century. The focus was really on, on that baptism. But and it's also focused on penance. And it's a focus on really renewing where we are in our relationship with the Lord. So three aspects of Lent is prayer, almsgiving and fasting. We know about fasting, it isn't giving up chocolates. It's really what is it that's blocking you from being closer with Christ. And that's really what you need to give up. Alms giving, obviously, is always important, and prayer to be able to be there. And so the Lenten prayers, the Stations of the Cross, the praying the rosary, obviously going to mass as often as you can reconciliation, the Lenten supper services often on Fridays, as at St. Lisbon, and see, all of those are extremely important, as we focus on getting ourselves prepared for Lent. The readings are really powerful, and, and this first reading on the book of Deuteronomy is amazing.Mary Anne: 3:30Yeah, this reading is really a ritual prescribed by Moses. It is the Feast of the harvest Thanksgiving. And the people once they were settled in the Promised Land, and freed from Egypt, we

Then Patrick helps get everyone in the mood for fathers day by listing the top ten father's and son's to play in the bigs. Spoiler alert! Barry Bond's and his dad were really really good at baseball. After that Patrick tells some stories about Moisés Alou and his dad Felipe Alou as well as a nice story from Taits Sr. and Tatis Jr... The Tatits's story was a nice story on how Jr. is handling fame and he credits everything to his dad. On this episode of the Sports Info Solutions Baseball Podcast, Mark Simon ( @MarkASimonSays ( https://twitter.com/MarkASimonSays ) ) is joined by KT Wiz outfielder Mel Rojas Jr. ( @melrojasjr ( https://twitter.com/melrojasjr ) ), arguably the best hitter in the KBO and the league’s leader in hard-hit rate. If Mel’s name sounds familiar, it should – his father pitched 10 seasons in the majors including a strong run as the closer for the Expos. Mel talks about his family’s baseball history, which includes the Alou family, and explains why he’s a hitter and not a pitcher (1:11). He talks about what the season has been like and how improved plate coverage has led to more success (3:31). He also explains what it takes to hit or lay off a nasty forkball and how his family’s history may have come in handy regarding his knowledge of that pitch (7:03). Mel also discusses his defense and playing/living in Korea (10:40) and what it has been like to play without fans and how KBO fans are highly positive, even when their players are in slumps (16:30). He also explains why he chose to come to the KBO and why he chose to stay (17:38). He picks out some of the league’s other top players and references one who should be a future MLB prospect (20:00). Lastly, he offers advice for anyone considering playing in the KBO (22:23).

Moises Alou is one of those players who was better than we remember. Alou was an elite talent who put together a stellar career, but injuries robbed him of a potential Hall of Fame career. He was a pure hitter who raked into his 40s, and was part of some very memorable moments in the early 2000's. All this (and more) on today's episode.
Here we are in Day Whatever of the quarantine. Time for another Wellness Check. This one is with Jen formerly of The Heckler. Old school readers of The Heckler will remember Jen from her column chronicling her 20-something life in the bleachers and obsession with Moises Alou (she used to have an “I’d do Alou” shirt). Sadly, Jen became a grown up around the time she turned 30 and got married, had a baby and got a “serious job.” She’s since moved to Cleveland but she’s still hilarious, as evidenced by this Wellness Check and the quarantine dispatches she’s been posting to Facebook (they’re private but Brad reads an excerpt in the interview and is working very hard to convince Jen to start posting them to TheHeckler.com). In this interview, we talk about a bunch of stuff, including but not limited to: her daily White Claw consumption habits, punishing people who have “quarantine babies” in nine months, why she thinks her son asked if babies are born with beards, her conspiracy theories on COV-19 and how her porn-watching habits have helped shape them, how the quarantine is impacting her family-planning situation due to a likely condom shortage and postponing her husband’s vasectomy, why she’d like to stock up on Xanax, why Hobby Lobby isn’t essential, what she’d sacrifice for the quarantine to be responsibly lifted, and much much more. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/TheHeckler/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/TheHeckler/support

All aficionados of baseball are familiar with the pathbreaking role of Jackie Robinson in reintegrating the game back in 1947. What many fans are less familiar with are the issues that Latinos of color endured both in the minor leagues and the Majors starting back in the 1950s. How difficult was it for a mulato, a person who had never endured (or even heard of) Jim Crow, to come to grips with the “peculiarities” of life in the United States, while simultaneously trying to learn a new language as well as trying play well enough in order to move up the various rungs of a particular franchise's farm system? The story of Major League great (as a player and manager) Felipe Alou sheds light on this important topic. Alou started playing organized baseball late in life (early teens), endured poverty and hardship in his native Dominican Republic, and then helped to break down barriers of language and perception throughout his long career on the field and in the dugout. All the while, he played with skill, dignity, and intelligence; helping to shatter the stereotypes that professional baseball (and many in the United States) embraced about Spanish-speakers. Felipe utilized his position as a player, coach, and manager to help various clubs win ball games; but he also did even more important things. He challenged the notion that Latinos are lazy and not tactical in their approach and understanding of baseball. By doing this, he has opened many possibilities for the current and upcoming generation of Latinos in the game. No longer are Spanish-surnamed players merely perceived as athletes, now they have Alou, and others, to look toward as role models for entering into the off-the-field aspect of the game. The book, Alou: My Baseball Journey (University of Nebraska Press, 2018), which is co-authored with Peter Kerasotis, documents the life, struggles, and successes of this great ambassador of the game of baseball. The book, Alou: My Baseball Journey (University of Nebraska Press, 2018), which is co-authored with Peter Kerasotis, documents the life, struggles, and successes of this great ambassador of the game of baseball. All aficionados of baseball are familiar with the pathbreaking role of Jackie Robinson in reintegrating the game back in 1947. What many fans are less familiar with are the issues that Latinos of color endured both in the minor leagues and the Majors starting back in the 1950s. How difficult was it for a mulato, a person who had never endured (or even heard of) Jim Crow, to come to grips with the “peculiarities” of life in the United States, while simultaneously trying to learn a new language as well as trying play well enough in order to move up the various rungs of a particular franchise’s farm system? From things overheard in the stands to the top of the 9th inning, stupid was the theme of the night as Jack and Jeremy return to Wrigley Field to see the Cubs take on the Miami Marlins. A pitiful Pedro Strop outing, a Kyle Ryan brain cramp, meathead fans invoke the names of Alou and Bartman, and so much more highlight this week's episode. Plus, Jeremy shares a story of a windblown hat out a car window that may have led to an accident, Jack is pegged as a native Quebecer, and the guys are almost hit by a car on their way to the field. All this plus an epic rant on the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball broadcast team - watch out Matt Vasgersian and Alex Rodriguez (1:17:07)! Grab your frozen peanuts and enjoy!
Peter Kerasotis, author of Alou: My Baseball Journey, joins the boys to talk about how he got his start in journalism, the journey that led to him partnering up with former Major League player and manager Felipe Alou to co-write his autobiography, Alou's relationship with Roberto Clemente and whether or not he believes the “Dominican Jackie Robinson” deserves a spot in Cooperstown.
Alou, amorinhas do meu coração.
