A mediados del siglo XIX, principios del XX que una mujer decidiera libremente se veía como una enfermedad. Multitud de mujeres fueron encerradas contra su voluntad por padres, maridos o hermanos. A veces porque había propiedades y dinero en juego, otras porque eran rechazadas y querían inhabilitarlas. La familia y el médico se unían y bajo cualquier pretexto se las encerraba. Por ejemplo si dictaminaban que era una histérica lo primero que hacían era darle una ducha fría en la cabeza para quitarle las ideas independientes y luego una ducha caliente vajinal para ver si el mal se iba por abajo. Situaciones terribles de mujeres reales que fueron encerradas por locas aunque nunca lo estuvieron.
